Over the past month, Trump has sought to reverse negative economic sentiments with a series of cost-focused initiatives aimed at granting consumers relief across several sectors, including housing, automobiles, and food. However, the president has also repeatedly referred to "affordability" as a "con job" and a "hoax" manufactured by the Democrats and falsely said he has ended inflation. And, according to two of Trump's out-of-government political advisers, Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill are quietly pressing the White House to do more to sell the president's economic policies ahead of a contentious primary season.

President Trump will try to change the narrative on affordability Tuesday when he makes a speech in Pennsylvania amid rising economic dissatisfaction among the public. Trump has recently pushed back against the criticism of his administration over rising prices and an arguably sluggish economy, calling the term "affordability" a "Democrat scam" during comments at the White House last week. But he seems to be shifting his approach with polls showing his approval rating well underwater and Democrats holding a lead in the generic congressional ballot. A Harvard CAPS/Harris poll released Monday showed 57 percent of voters believe Trump is losing the battle against inflation, the issue that respondents said they cared about the most. A majority also said Trump's signature tariff policy is harming the economy and that the economy is shrinking.

The working-class town sits in a swing congressional district and adjacent to another, in a battleground state that has could determine control of the House next year. Democrats have overperformed in elections across the country as they run on a message of affordability ahead of the midterms. A poll from Politico last week found 46% of Americans ‒ including 37% of Trump voters ‒ believe the cost of living in the United States is the worst they can remember.

Border Czar Tom Homan revealed on "Fox and Friends" on Sunday that over 62,000 illegal immigrant children have been saved this year from sex trafficking, forced labor, and other horrendous, abusive conditions. "Over half a million children were smuggled into this country under Joe Biden," Homan said. "They lost track of 300,000. Vice President JD Vance has exaggerated the increase in home prices during President Joe Biden's time in office and has misleadingly pointed to illegal immigration as a primary cause of a rise in prices. In a Fox News interview on Nov. 13, Vance said that "the price of a new home literally doubled" under Biden. But home sales price measures show at most a 37% increase. Vance appears to be referring to an increase in the monthly cost of new homes, an increase that factors in a rise in mortgage rates. In that interview and in a Dec. 2 Cabinet meeting, Vance pointed to illegal immigration as a primary cause. "Why did homes get so unaffordable?" he said in the Cabinet meeting. "Because we had 20 million illegal aliens in this country taking homes that ought by right to go to American citizens," he said, using an exaggerated figure.
