Kashus Culpepper Announces Debut Album “Act I,” Releases New Single, “Mean To Me”

Debut album coming soon. Since breaking out last summer upon the release of his debut single, “After Me?,” Kashus Culpepper has been one of the hottest young stars in the alt. country scene. Mixing in a beautiful blend of country, blues and soul, the Navy veteran has already flexed his versatility, collaborating with the likes of Marcus King on the rockin’ “Southern Man,” Chase Rice on his track from ELDORA, “Tall Grass,” and 4x Grammy-winner, Sierra Ferrell on the tender, Willie Nelson-inspired “Broken Wing Bird” back in June. Couple those high-profile collaborations with the likes of more stellar, solo releases such as “Who Hurt You” and his cover of Tom Jones’ “Sexbomb” for the soundtrack of the Netflix film, The Wrong Paris, and Culpepper has produced one of the most interesting discographies in the genre to begin his career. After getting nods to open for the likes of Whiskey Myers, 49 Winchester and Charles Wesley Godwin during the summer, as well as Darius Rucker throughout his current Canadian tour, the Alabama native has caught the eye of both alternative and mainstream stars in the adolescence of his career thus far. Recently signing to Big Loud Records and joining the likes of the aforementioned Godwin, Morgan Wallen, Gavin Adcock, Dylan Gossett, ERNEST and more, it feels as if the “Jenni” singer is on the verge of breaking out in a big way. And it looks like that day may be coming incredibly soon. On Wednesday, Culpepper took to Instagram to announce that his next single, “Mean To Me,” was dropping this Friday, October 24. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kashus Culpepper (@kashculpeppermusic) Written by Culpepper, along with Diego Urias, Oscar Charles and Matt Warren, the track puts a fun spin on the titular phrase, “Mean To Me.” Painting a picture of a slightly volatile relationship, filled with arguments, drunk fights and the like in the first verse, he sets the listener up to think that the chorus will center around asking his lover why she’s so mean. “I didn’t mean to call you crazy But you busted my nose And the bar got us banned And as we’re walking out of that door Threw your middle finger at me Never knew you’d be so damn mean But when you get drunk, you like to say things you don’t really mean” He turns the entire song on its head in the chorus, however. Instead of condemning her, Culpepper takes the lows that come with the highs of the relationship and ultimately flips the “Mean to Me” phrase, proclaiming her actions don’t change how much she means to him. “What about them memories? What about Bourbon Street? Where you said there’d be nights like these We at the bottom of a bottle And them whiskey words, they sting But they still don’t change what you mean to me” Overall, “Mean To Me” is another successful outing from Culpepper, showcasing his stellar, soulful vocals throughout the rising track and once again proving why he’s an artist to watch in the coming years. With that being said, however, he wasn’t done. In addition to the brand new track, Culpepper has announced that his debut album, Act I, is arriving on January 23rd. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kashus Culpepper (@kashculpeppermusic) Act I  will feature 18 songs overall, including pre-released tracks such as the aforementioned collaborations with Ferrell and King, “Broken Wing Bird” and “Southern Man” as well as “After Me?” and his recent release, “Believe.” Fan favorites, “Jenni” and “Who Hurt You,” however, have been left off the tracklist. Discussing the album in his Instagram caption, Culpepper noted that Act I has a little bit of everything in it, focusing on the wide range of emotions captured throughout. He’d also hope that listeners find a piece of themselves in the record. “This record has so many emotions in it. Love. Heartbreak. Joy. Anger. Hope. Everything that makes us human. It’s been a journey creating these songs. At times it even feels like a movie, looking back on the moments that shaped it.  Lord knows I’m grateful for every moment. I hope you can find a piece of yourself in these songs, and in this album.” Overall, Culpepper has proven time and again that he’s primed for a successful, long-lasting career in the alt. country scene. Given the fact that he has yet to release a bad song to date, all signs point to Act I being an all-time debut album. I can confidently say that you will not want to miss this one when it releases on January 23rd. Act I Tracklist “Intro” “Southern Man” feat. Marcus King “Alabama Beauty Queen” “Woman” “Break Like Me” “Believe” “Stay” “Mean To Me” “Broken Wing Bird” w/ Sierra Fierra “Better Weather” “That’s The Feeling” “Man Of His Word” “In Her Eyes” “Is It True” “After Me?” “Out Of My Mind” “House On A Hill” “Cherry Rose” “Mean To Me” The post Kashus Culpepper Announces Debut Album “Act I,” Releases New Single, “Mean To Me” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.

“Get Them Boots Off” – Waylon Jennings Thought He Was Haunted After He Was Gifted A Pair Of Hank Williams’ Boots

“Get Them Boots Off” – Waylon Jennings Thought He Was Haunted After He Was Gifted A Pair Of Hank Williams’ Boots

Haunted cowboy boots? Talk about an all-time great country music Halloween story… Waylon Jennings famously owned a pair of Hank Williams’ cowboy boots, which were gifted to him by Hank’s son and Waylon’s close friend, Hank Williams Jr. They were black and white with a cool red design, and made by famous designer Nudie Cohn, who invented the rhinestone covered “Nudie Suits” that became so popular in country music thanks to Hank Sr., Porter Wagoner, Gram Parsons’ and even Elvis. Here’s a photo of them: Guernsey’s And on The Ralph Emery Show back in the mid-90’s promoting his book Waylon: An Autobiography, Waylon recalled a spooky night at the studio when he first felt Hank’s presence. He wore the boots there, a prized possession, obviously, and things went sideways quickly: “Hank Jr. gave them to me, and he came back in a couple of days and said, ‘Did they fit?’ And I said, ‘How did you know I tried them on?’ And he said, ‘I knew they’d fit!’ And so I got to wearing them every once in a while, ‘cuz they were Hank’s. And one night, I was recording, and it was raining really bad, and I had these boots on. And a guy that worked for me came in and said, ‘Chief, it’s real bad.’ I said, ‘What do you mean it’s real bad?’ He said, ‘It’s just real bad.’ And I said, ‘Well what is it?’ You know? He said, ‘You know that new Cadillac you just bought?’ I said ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘There’s a tree on it.'” Waylon’s longtime drummer Richie Albright immediately felt that it might have something to do with the fact that Waylon had on Hank Sr.’s boots and made him take them off right away: “And Richie Albright, who played drums, said ‘Get them boots off!’ That’s the first thing. And I went out there, and I said, ‘Lookie there, the whole tree is all over that car.’ I got out there, and I said ‘Raise that branch.’ There was one branch over it. And I said ‘Raise up that branch,’ and they did and I backed it out. And right to this day, there’s not a scratch on that car.” In the book, Waylon has the story written a bit differently, saying the tree fell first, they went back into the studio after assessing the damage, and then lighting struck the recording tape inside the studio. He says there was ash on the ground of the studio from the electricity and burning, and it was then that everyone made him take the boots off. Regardless, it’s a spooky story, and either Waylon got really lucky, or if you’re into ghosts and spirits, maybe you think it was Hank Sr. himself who had something to do with Waylon’s brand new Cadillac coming out unscathed after a tree fell all over it (and the subsequent lightning). Waylon informed Ralph that the boots were a size 9.5, and he was determined to make them fit no matter what: “I was gonna make ’em fit… I just kinda had a feeling they might. I had seen one picture of him with them on.” Actually, Waylon mentions several times throughout the autobiography that Hank Williams’ ghost haunted him throughout his life, and he recalled seeing Hank’s Cadillac for the first time and laying down in the back seat. He doesn’t outright say that’s where he might’ve picked up the “haint,” which is what a lot of Southerners call spirits or ghosts, but kind of implies that being the first time he was up close and personal with an important Hank artifact. Superstitious people believe you can get a haint “on you,” so to speak, and that they’ll follow you around causing things like Hank Sr. might’ve done to Waylon. In fact, if you’re ever visiting the South and go to either a restaurant or even someone’s house with a porch, you’ll likely notice the ceiling on the porch is painted a light blue color called haint blue. Some believe doing that will stop the spirit from coming through the front door. Waylon also mentions in his book that he could feel Hank’s spirit on his tour bus, and he could always sense when he was there, so it seems like he’s a believer in the fact that his spirit was still around, which is a pretty common belief when it comes to Hank Sr.’s fans. There have been numerous reports of sightings of the ghost of Hank Williams over the years at the Ryman Auditorium, in his hometown of Montgomery, Alabama where he was laid to rest, and there are also rumors that he haunts the alley behind Tootsie’s. Whether you’re into that kind of stuff or not, it certainly makes for an interesting story about two all-time country icons. I like to think that if Hank did follow Waylon around in spirit, it’s because he was proud of what he was doing for country and the kind of music he was making… Here’s the clip of the interview where Waylon tells Ralph about the boots, it’s really interesting and the perfect story with Halloween festivities getting underway this week Also, if you want another spooky Hank Sr. story. “The Ride,” which was first recorded by David Allan Coe in the 80’s, was written by Gary Gentry along with John Blayne Detterline, Jr.), after Gary says he saw Hank Sr. in his apartment. You can read more about that HERE. And it only feels right to leave you with this… The post “Get Them Boots Off” – Waylon Jennings Thought He Was Haunted After He Was Gifted A Pair Of Hank Williams’ Boots first appeared on Whiskey Riff.

Johnny Cash’s Dark Murder Ballad “Delia’s Gone” Is The Perfect, Spooky Song For Halloween

Johnny Cash’s Dark Murder Ballad “Delia’s Gone” Is The Perfect, Spooky Song For Halloween

Less than a week away from Halloween… let’s ring in the scary holiday with a ballad from the Johnny Cash catalogue. We’re right in the middle of “Spooky Season,” and just a few sleeps away from Hallow’s Eve, so why not shine on a light on what has to be the spookiest song of the Man in Black’s entire catalogue? That might be a stretch, considering Cash put out a number of dark songs like “Ain’t No Grave,” “The Beast in Me,” and “The Long Black Veil.” But if I had to nail down one song as the scariest (’tis the season), my money is on the chilling “Delia’s Gone.” The song was a part of his critically acclaimed American Recordings project that was released in 1994. Believe it or not, Johnny Cash wasn’t doing all that well in album sales later in his career, and this Rick Rubin-produced project ended up being very successful after years of swings and misses. It certainly reinvigorated his image, and brought to life songs like “Redemption,” “The Man Who Couldn’t Cry,” and the aforementioned “Delia’s Gone.” Johnny Cash had actually already recorded “Delia’s Gone” on his 1962 album The Sound Of Johnny Cash, but something drove the country music legend to double dip and record it again. One could argue that the second time around – some 30 years after he originally recorded – was a little bit more haunting than the first. The murder ballad is often traced back to an actual murder that took place on Christmas Day in 1900. 14-year-old Delia Green was murdered in Savannah, Georgia, and the tragic story inspired a number of folk and country songs – some called “Delia’s Gone,” and others simply penned as “Delia.” According to University of Georgia chemistry professor John Garst, who scoured old newspaper clippings from around 1900, Delia was a young girl in a sexual relationship with another young boy named Moses Houston. At a Christmas Eve party, Moses started getting a little vocal about his sexual escapades with Delia (perhaps a little liquored up), and she didn’t take too kindly to him telling everybody that they were sleeping together. She chewed him out in front of everybody, and that was enough for him to get a gun and shoot her dead. And remember, these kids were about 14 or 15 at the time. Moses was quickly convicted for murder and sentenced to life in prison. He served 13 years and was eventually paroled by the governor of Georgia. Blind Willie McTell, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings and various other blues, folk and country artists have recorded different versions of the song through the years. Though like I said, none are as bone-chilling as when Johnny Cash re-recorded it in 1994 for American Recordings. And the music video followed suit, portraying the “Man in Black” in as-creepy-as-can-be fashion and calling upon a young Kate Moss to play Delia. It’s the perfect Johnny Cash song to throw on for your Halloween party… and everyone knows that scary stuff is that much spookier when it’s based on a true story. Take a listen… and Happy Halloween!
