Rapper-turned-country-artist Jelly Roll has recently discovered a love for hunting. Jelly, whose real name is Jason DeFord, has had a heck of a 2025, musically speaking. He’s one of the biggest names in all of music, and the singer-songwriter has scored a number of chart-topping hits this year. He even achieved No. 1 status thanks to a Christian-country-crossover with Brandon Lake: “Hard Fought Hallelujah.” Though his achievements in music are impressive, Jelly Roll’s biggest win in 2025 has been his weight loss. If you look at a picture of the “Need A Favor” singer from even 2024, it’s incredible to see the transformation that he’s made. In a recent interview on The Joe Rogan Experience, Jelly Roll explained all that he’s done – from dieting to increase in exercise – to drops hundreds of pounds in just a couple of years. One of those activities that he’s picked up to help him stay active is hunting. Jelly said that he recently got his hunting license, and went on to detail some bow hunting adventures he had been on. It was when the country artist mentioned that he hadn’t been rifle hunting since he was 10 years old that Joe Rogan asked him if he was able to own or operate a firearm: “No sir, I’m on my first hunt, pretty much.”  He was recently with Joe’s friend and world class bow hunter, Cameron Hanes: View this post on Instagram So why is Jelly Roll limited to just bow hunting? The singer has been open about his past and his time spent in and out of prison in his early years. Jelly Roll spent time locked up for drug charges, as well as armed robbery, and as a result he now has to deal with everything that comes with being a convicted felon – like not being able to enter other countries (there’s been some leeway in that) and not being able to own or operate a firearm. Rogan asked if that’s a forever thing, and that’s when Jelly Roll disclosed that he has a chance of being pardoned at the end of 2025: “Well, this is interesting. I am up for a pardon this year. My paperwork has been sent in to my governor. He considers pardons every December. So everyday, I’m just kind of praying. Even if he gives me the pardon, Tennessee has a zero-forgiveness policy for violent offenders. So I would be pardoned, but I wouldn’t be exonerated.  What I’d have to do is – and this is my hope – my goal is that I want to reach out to legislation eventually and go, ‘Hey, if nothing else, I’d like my right to hunt.’ It’s done a lot for my mental health. It’s done a lot for my physical health… there should be some sort of path to redemption.” Considering the Tennessee Board of Parole unanimously recommended a full pardon for Jelly Roll back in April, and all of the positive things he’s done for the Nashville community, you’d imagine that the “Save Me” singer will get pardoned by Governor Bill Lee. But only time will tell if that kind of grace is extended, and for now, Jelly Roll will have stick to bow hunting… which he says he absolutely loves.
