The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 Officially in Development at Netflix With New Directors

News The Mitchells vs. the Machines The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 Officially in Development at Netflix With New Directors Will the Mitchells get to battle something other than machines? By Matthew Byrd | Published on October 22, 2025 Photo: Netflix Comment 0 Share New Share Photo: Netflix Variety reports that The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2 is officially in development with Netflix set to distribute the Sony Pictures project. The details of that arrangement are indeed a bit odd. Due to distribution issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Sony Pictures sold the distribution rights to 2021’s The Mitchells vs. the Machines to Netflix. Ultimately, Netflix decided to give the film a limited theatrical release before bringing the movie to its streaming service. While we can assume that the sequel will follow a similar distribution model, it’s worth noting that Netflix has been getting a bit more generous with their theatrical releases and may have learned a valuable lesson from the success of KPop Demon Hunters‘ limited theatrical releases. Given how popular The Mitchells vs. the Machines ended up being, it’s possible that this sequel could end up enjoying at least a slightly longer theatrical run. However, nothing has been confirmed at this time. What we do know is that Guillermo Martinez (head of story for The Mitchells vs. the Machines) and JP Sans (co-director of The Bad Guys 2) have signed on to direct this sequel. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are also returning to produce. No word yet on original director Mike Rianda’s involvement, though it’s likely that he will return in some capacity given that he voiced multiple characters in the first movie. That said, we really don’t know anything about the sequel’s plot, so it’s tough to say how much of the original cast will actually return. Even the sequel’s title is up in the air. It’s popularly being referred to as The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2, though the Mitchells seemingly scored a pretty decisive victory over the machines in the first movie. So either the machines return or the Mitchells will actually face off against a new threat this time around. We shall see. There’s no word yet regarding the sequel’s release date, so you have plenty of time to watch the original if you haven’t already done so. It’s really, really good. Until then, check out the movie’s trailer for a taste of how much fun it is to watch a barely functioning family become unlikely heroes. Atlanta City Council Chairmanship Race Raises Questions About ‘Changes in Policing’

A fierce campaign is underway for Atlanta City Council president in Georgia. The two contenders are Rohit Malhotra, a left-wing nonprofit executive, and City Council member Marci Collier Overstreet.  A debate in early October exposed the wide gap between Overstreet, who has served for several years on the City Council, and Malhotra, who has been described as “representing the more progressive wing of Atlanta politics.” “Mr. Rohit should really own up to the fact that he wants to defund or abolish the police department,” Overstreet said in a brittle exchange during the debate. “The words ‘defund the police’—which I have never said, actually—came after George Floyd was murdered, and people were asking for changes in policing,” Malhotra countered. “What does safety look like without always only talking about policing only? Policing is a part of a comprehensive strategy. It doesn’t have to be the only one, and to create a false binary is not only wrong, it’s dangerous,” the nonprofit executive contended. In August 2023, Malhotra signed onto a letter criticizing the process by which the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center had been constructed. The training center was designed to allow police officers, firefighters, emergency medical services personnel, and E-911 staff to train in a local area, according to the center’s website.  “There has also been copious disagreement about where, how, and—frankly—whether it should be built,” a portion of the letter reads. “Supporters and dissenters of these decisions—including Mayor Andre Dickens and several City Council members—agree on one thing: The city of Atlanta’s decision from the outset did not include sufficient, equitable, nor transparent public engagement,” the letter continues. Despite that strong sentiment more than two years ago, Malhotra now appears to have not much to say about where he stands on policing on his campaign website. What little he does say involves advocating for treating “gun violence as a public health crisis: invest in community-based violence interruption, diversion, and conflict mediation,” developing “data-driven metrics so we measure what actually produces safety (not just reactions),” and providing “support for families impacted by violence—mental health, funeral/therapy costs, ongoing local support.” Malhotra also calls for pilot programs “like universal basic income and baby bonds to build generational wealth.” The role Malhotra and Overstreet are seeking is more than just ceremonial. The president of the Atlanta City Council chairs meetings, casts tiebreaking votes, and appoints committee chairmen and members of committees for issues such as public safety and city utilities. He or she also serves as an interim mayor in the event that something happens to the elected mayor. Serving on the City Council can also be a steppingstone for a run for mayor of Atlanta. Malhotra is the founder and executive director—currently on a leave of absence—of the Center for Civic Innovation. The center discusses at length its emphasis on “equity” as a part of its work.  “We confront the systemic inequalities that have made Atlanta the most unequal city in the U.S., with an emphasis on race, income, gender, and geography,” the organization explains on its website under a section titled “Our Values.” According to tax filings published by ProPublica, Malhotra was paid $150,000 in fiscal year 2024 by the center, and the combined salaries and wages for Malhotra and his staff make up more than 63% of the nonprofit’s total expenses. He previously was an Ash Innovation Fellow in the Obama White House’s Office of Management and Budget. Malhotra went to school in Atlanta at Emory University and received a master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.  The election will be held on Nov. 4. The Daily Signal reached out to the campaigns of both Overstreet and Malhotra for comment. Daily Signal Is Obtaining Pentagon Press Credentials

There is no greater duty for American journalists than to truthfully inform the public about their government, most especially efforts to keep the homeland safe from national security threats both foreign and domestic. Many have honored that patriotic obligation with distinction. More than 50 years ago, journalists reporting on the Vietnam War uncovered startling information and revealed government deception. More recently, investigations into the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq exposed strategic failures of our leaders. These kinds of stories have challenged the perception of our government and altered the course of American history. Sadly, too many journalists in recent years have abdicated this responsibility. Some reported that President Donald Trump colluded with Russia to influence the results of the 2016 election. Some published anonymous claims that the sitting president called service members “suckers and losers” despite mountains of on-the-record evidence to the contrary. Some failed to thoroughly investigate claims of “Russian bounties” on U.S. troops in Afghanistan. These stories eroded the public’s trust in media and jeopardized the credibility of the press. Access vs. Accountability For journalists, the tension between access and accountability will always be a real one. Access in the form of relationships helps journalists to understand more fully the powerful institutions they cover and accurately communicate complex issues to the public. Accountability demands that journalists challenge those same relationships by scrutinizing the individuals vested with public authority. Good journalism is defined by prudently navigating this irreducible trade-off—never overcoming it, only managing it with vigilance and integrity. Today, the Department of War is announcing the next generation of the Pentagon press corps. We are excited to announce over 60 journalists, representing a broad spectrum of new media outlets and independent journalists, have signed the Pentagon’s media access policy and will be…— Sean Parnell (@SeanParnellASW) October 22, 2025 Pentagon’s New Press Guidance The Department of War recently released updated press guidance for coverage of the Pentagon. These guidelines have sparked a vigorous public debate over whether the new policy upsets the balance between access and accountability, thus compromising core journalistic principles.  Some publications have fallen on either side of the debate after good-faith consideration. Others appear to be deliberately misrepresenting this policy. Despite the protests of some members of the Pentagon press corps, the public deserves truthful reporting on national security. Now is a critical time to do that work. The current administration is seeking the wholesale revitalization of the American military, the restructuring of our defense industrial base, and the emergence of world-changing military technologies. Meanwhile, America is engaging in military action against Venezuela and drug traffickers, an uneasy ceasefire holds in the Middle East, and the pursuit of peace between Russia and Ukraine continues. The Daily Signal’s Decision With this in mind, The Daily Signal has decided to obtain credentials for the Pentagon. This decision came after consulting legal advisers, trusted industry colleagues, and national security experts, plus Department of War staff who crafted the policy and explained how it would impact our work. The Daily Signal holds itself to the highest standards of journalism. Our duty to truthfully report on national security—striking the proper balance between access and accountability—is not negotiable. Nothing in the Pentagon’s updated guidelines can or will alter our methods and reporting, both of which are of paramount importance for our news organization. We will continue to adhere to the journalistic principles and practices that have guided our work since 2014. We are committed to serving our audience as a reliable source of news. That’s our promise. The post Daily Signal Is Obtaining Pentagon Press Credentials appeared first on The Daily Signal.

How a Pope Impacted World Politics

How a Pope Impacted World Politics

Oct. 22 is the Catholic feast day in remembrance of Pope St. John Paul II. The story of his life is an inspiration for countless Catholic and non-Catholics. His witness of faith and courage in the face of darkness continues to shine as an example to the world for how we ought to respond to trials in our own lives. Growing up in Communist Poland, John Paul lost every member of his immediate family by the time he was 20 years old. His mother died when he was very young, then his brother as a teenager, and finally his father as he entered the second decade of his life. Despite experiencing such tragedy, Karol Wojtyla entered the underground seminary in order to say yes to the call from God to be a priest. He risked his life to do so. The theme of sacrificial love and the willingness to place others before himself was the constant chorus of his life. Early in his papacy this was personified in his visit to his hometown of Poland in June 1979. John Paul desired to see his home country and pray with one of the most vibrant and unshakeable Catholic nations the world has ever seen. There is no doubt that the Polish authorities at that time didn’t want his visit to happen. However, if they forbid him from arriving they risked outraging the people as well as admitting that this faith leader actually had an impact on the real world. Faith was deemed irrelevant, ridiculous and unnecessary. If they allowed him to come they knew that large groups of Catholics may come out to meet him which could spark an uprising from the people and leave Poland more susceptible to invasion from the Soviet Union. Peggy Noonan’s excellent book entitled, “John Paul the Great: Remembering a Spiritual Father,” recounts this scene and the events that surrounded it. It is vividly clear that the pope’s willingness to place himself against the powers of totalitarianism emboldened the people of Poland to hope for better lives and a more authentic experience of freedom. On the very first day of the trip the pope offered Mass in Victory Square in Warsaw. While the communists attempted to keep the gathering as quiet as possible, over one million Poles attended. In his homily, the pope noted that the Polish people have become a new version of witnesses (not dissimilar to the early Apostles). This was due to the fact that Poland was on the world stage as a nation being persecuted. In such a context of global and public suffering, John Paul urged those attending to consider that such witnesses have a duty and obligation. “Are we capable of them?” he asked the multitudes gathered. In order to be a witness who is convicted to pronounce the truth and bring about change, John Paul II said that we must remember the reality of the human person. Who are we and what are we made for? The human person can only be understood in reference to God. For Poland, the pope said that her history does not make sense without Christ because the community of Poland has always been so entrenched in their faith. “If we reject this key to understanding our nation,” he continued, “we lay ourselves open to a substantial misunderstanding. We no longer understand ourselves. It is impossible without Christ to understand this nation with its past so full of splendor and also of terrible difficulties.” The pope was noting that only with God can we know that our suffering will not have the last word. Only in clinging to one’s relationship with the God who defeated death can we rise above any trial and renew our world. To illustrate this point even further, the pope ended his words with reference to the fact that Victory Square housed the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. All over the world, he noted, there are tombs that are unnamed. Tombs that remind us of the countless witnesses who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms. Their lives and their deaths shout out to the world that the inviolable rights of man are worth sacrificing for. The suffering of the Poles was a fact, and the pope was both recognizing it and asking them to accept the invitation to provide witness to the redeeming quality of sacrificial love. He asked the crowd if they were willing to accept the duties that come along with such a witness. Their response is noted by Noonan to sound like “thunder” as they began to chant, “We want God, we want God, we want God …” Authors and scholars have recounted that the pope’s journey to Poland marked a shift toward the demise of communism in Europe. He ignited hope in his homeland because he witnessed to the need for God, the power of sacrifice, and the capacity of each person to aid the renewal of the world. In order to be those witnesses that Poland needed, and to be the witnesses that our world needs today—we must be willing to place God back in the picture of society. We also must be willing to place our reputations on the line to proclaim the truth and proclaim the dignity of each person. If each person does so we will see another renewal across the globe similar to that in Poland. Because God is what we need and sacrifice conquers all darkness—if we witness to it. We publish a variety of perspectives.
