Ella Langley Makes History As “Choosin’ Texas” Goes #1 On The All-Genre Billboard Hot 100

Historic. Since its release on October 7th, “Choosin’ Texas” has been nothing short of a phenomenon for Ella Langley. Upon release, the track debuted at #37 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, also launching all the way to #7 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, both of which were career-highs for the “hungover” singer. On December 2nd, it became Langley’s first career #1 hit on the aforementioned Hot Country Songs chart (it spent its 10th frame at #1 this week) and also became the fastest solo female song to reach the top 10 at US Country Radio this decade, taking just eight weeks to crack the Top 10. Over the past three weeks, the smash hit has also forced its way onto both Adult Contemporary (AC) and Pop radio, receiving the most additions on US Hot AC radio for the week of January 19th and subsequently getting the most adds on US Pop radio last week with 44. In turn, it propelled “Choosin’ Texas” all the way up to #2 on the all-genre Hot 100. As last week rolled to an end, “Choosin’ Texas” and reigning Grammy New Artist of the Year, Olivia Dean’s smash hit, “Man I Need,” were neck and neck in the battle for #1 on the Hot 100. Knowing that history was on the line, Langley would encourage fans to make a last-minute push for the track, rallying them to purchase the song on iTunes. And it looks like it worked for the Alabama native. Today, “Choosin’ Texas” rose from #2 to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (dated February 14th), becoming Langley’s first #1 on the all-genre chart. In turn, she’s become just the seventh female artist IN HISTORY to go #1 on the Hot 100 with a country song. View this post on Instagram In case you were wondering who the “weren’t for the wind” singer joins with this #1, the exclusive list includes Jeannie C. Riley, Dolly Parton, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Kacey Musgraves and most recently, Beyoncé. Jeannie C. Riley did it with Harper Valley PTA” in 1968, Dolly Parton did it with “9 to 5” in 1981, Carrie Underwood did it with “Inside Your Heaven” in 2005 (and she is the only country artist to debut at #1 on the Hot 100), Taylor Swift did it with “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” in 2012 (she was still classified as a country artist at this time), Kacey Musgraves did it as a featured artist with Zach Bryan on “I Remember Everything” in 2023 and Beyoncé did it with “Texas Hold ‘Em” in 2024, which was classified as a country song. Additionally, with “Choosin’ Texas” spending its 11th week at #1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, Langley becomes just the third female artist in history to have a #1 on both the Hot Country songs chart and Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously. With this, she joins Swift (“All Too Well [Taylor’s Version]” and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”) and Beyoncé (“Texas Hold ‘Em”). Even more incredibly, she is now the first female artist ever to capture triple up and score #1s on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs, Country Airplay and Hot 100 chart simultaneously. Along with today’s #1 spot on the Hot 100, “Choosin’ Texas” also remains the best-selling song of the year in the United States, surpassing Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia” last Thursday. Only time will tell just how big it truly gets, but as of today, “Choosin’ Texas” looks to have cemented itself as one of the biggest hits of the decade in country music. Keep in mind, all these accomplishments are being done on all-genre charts, and beyond that, she’s also forcing her way onto country-hesitant formats such as Pop and Adult Contemporary radio as well. Simply put, “Choosin’ Texas” is primed to be one of the longest-lasting hits in the genre we’ve seen in quite some time. Congrats to Mrs. Ella Langley. “Choosin’ Texas” The post Ella Langley Makes History As “Choosin’ Texas” Goes #1 On The All-Genre Billboard Hot 100 first appeared on Whiskey Riff.

Japan’s LDP Wins Supermajority

Japan’s LDP Wins Supermajority

Japan’s Sunday elections brought the governing Liberal Democratic Party a supermajority in a major victory for Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who had gambled by calling an election shortly after assuming office. The LDP won 316 of 465 seats in the country’s House of Representatives, up from the 198 it held before the election.  While the LDP has governed Japan for all but six years since its formation 1955, it lost its governing majority in October 2024, leading to the resignation of Shigeru Ishiba as prime minister and party leader the following year.  Following Ishiba’s resignation, Takaichi won the LDP’s leadership contest in an upset. Takaichi is known for her social conservatism and her hawkishness on China. The LDP’s landslide win gives it over a two-thirds majority in Japan’s lower house, paving the way for a constitutional amendment to Japan’s postwar constitution. Takaichi has announced that she is seeking to amend the constitution to expand the scope of the nation’s self-defense forces.
