PBS Finds 'Festival-like' Atmosphere In L.A. With 'Some Looting' But Mostly 'Non-Violent'

Tuesday’s PBS News Hour led off with special correspondent Marcia Biggs’ nearly nine-minute segment from downtown Los Angeles, ground zero in the confrontation between Trump’s immigration enforcement and protests that often devolved into looting and rioting. Co-anchors Amna Nawaz and Geoff Bennett noted that “700 Marines and 2,000 additional National Guard troops began arriving” on Tuesday, while California Governor Gavin Newsom and President Trump drew political swords via a lawsuit filed by Newsom and Trump’s speech at Fort Bragg. The hosts handed things off to Biggs, embedded in downtown Los Angeles, who saw “tense calm on the streets” while admitting to some looting the night before, with the usual ridiculous caveat of "nonviolent" protests. Biggs: This morning, shop owners cleaned up several looted stores in downtown Los Angeles. But California authorities have said the majority of last night's protests were nonviolent. In a congressional hearing today, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said troops were sent to safeguard ICE agents. Biggs even quoted former House Speaker, Rep. Nancy Pelosi. Biggs: And, today, Representative Nancy Pelosi of California contrasted Trump's actions now with his handling of the January 6 insurrection. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA): Something is very wrong with this picture, inconsistent in his actions, contrary to his own statement that he couldn't -- of a year ago that he couldn't send anyone in without the governor's consent anyplace, and in violation of the Constitution. Then it was on to the usual ridiculousness about “mostly peaceful protesters.” Biggs: Elsewhere this week, from Atlanta to New York City, mostly peaceful protesters gathered in multiple cities to call for the end of ICE raids. She asked Jorge-Mario Cabrera of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, “How scared are people?” Biggs cited his left-wing paranoia approvingly when she threw things back to the studio. Biggs: Cabrera believes that this show of force is used as psychological warfare and a provocation, an attempt to show those who support immigrants as unruly and un-American -- Amna. Nawaz followed up with Biggs about those arrested. Biggs: ….Cabrera described warrantless dragnets meant to target indiscriminately as many Latinos as possible. Now, of course, the administration flatly denies this and ICE maintains that everyone arrested was living here illegally. But advocates say that they have been detained and have not been able to have access to their families or to any legal representation. But what we do know is that these were all workers. They were targeted at places like a car wash, a Home Depot, a clothing manufacturer. These were all people who were working or looking for work. Reporting live from downtown L.A., Biggs strove to paint a picture of normalcy, to the point of describing a “festival-like” atmosphere, an illusion instantly shattered by the sound of a flashbang grenade, presumably fired by the authorities. She went on to talk about the “pretty nonviolent standoff” immediately after admitting there had been “some looting” the night before. Biggs: So the scene here has been pretty quiet, almost festival-like, for the last hour or so. We just heard a flashbang. We just heard another one. This is kind of how it's been going. This is what we saw last night. Of course, we mentioned some looting, but, in general, last night was pretty nonviolent standoff, which would erupt briefly when protesters would set off fireworks and then the LAPD would push them back…. This biased segment has been brought to you in part by Raymond James. A transcript is available, click “Expand.” PBS News Hour 6/10/25 7:02:38 p.m. (ET) Amna Nawaz: Welcome to the "News Hour." After a night of scattered protests against immigration raids in Los Angeles, about 700 Marines and 2,000 additional National Guard troops began arriving today. California Governor Gavin Newsom and the state's attorney general asked a court to block further intervention from the Trump administration. Geoff Bennett: But protests against ICE spread to other cities around the country this week. And, for his part, the president gave no sign of backing down, saying the Guard and Marines were needed in Los Angeles. In a speech at Fort Bragg today, he called protesters a foreign enemy and animals and said he would use every asset to quell violence. Special correspondent Marcia Biggs starts our coverage from Los Angeles. Marcia Biggs: In downtown Los Angeles today, a tense calm on the streets, with a heavy presence of National Guard members expected to be joined soon by U.S. Marines. In the Oval Office today, President Trump flirted with the idea of invoking the Insurrection Act. Donald Trump, President of the United States: If there's an insurrection, I would certainly invoke it. We will see. But I can tell you, last night was terrible. The night before that was terrible. We had some bad people. We had people, they look in your face and they spit right in your face. They're animals. And these are paid insurrectionists. These are paid troublemakers. Marcia Biggs: This morning, shop owners cleaned up several looted stores in downtown Los Angeles. But California authorities have said the majority of last night's protests were nonviolent. In a congressional hearing today, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said troops were sent to safeguard ICE agents. Pete Hegseth, U.S. Defense Secretary: We have deployed National Guard and the Marines to protect them in the execution of their duties, because we ought to be able to enforce immigration law in this country. Marcia Biggs: The deployment is expected to last 60 days and a Pentagon official said it will cost about $134 million. Yesterday, L.A. Police Chief Jim McDonnell said bringing in troops complicated police response to the protests. Jim McDonnell, Los Angeles, California, Police Chief: The introduction of a federal military personnel without direct coordination creates logistical challenges and risks confusion during critical incidents. Marcia Biggs: And, today, Representative Nancy Pelosi of California contrasted Trump's actions now with his handling of the January 6 insurrection. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA): Something is very wrong with this picture, inconsistent in his actions, contrary to his own statement that he couldn't — of a year ago that he couldn't send anyone in without the governor's consent anyplace, and in violation of the Constitution. Marcia Biggs: Elsewhere this week, from Atlanta to New York City, mostly peaceful protesters gathered in multiple cities to call for the end of ICE raids. Ana Medina, Home Care Worker: We are not criminals. We are working people. And we are not a trash can for the president. This is not a — I don't understand if this is his way to make America great again, destroy our people, destroy our communities. Destroying America, that's what he's doing. Marcia Biggs: At Trump Tower yesterday, more than 20 people were arrested after refusing to leave. And in Austin overnight, police fired tear gas containers and arrested protesters. Woman: We were just out there peacefully protesting. We were not being aggressive towards the cops at all. We were just protesting as normal. And whenever they decided it was over, they just pushed us and used a lot of force. Marcia Biggs: Back in Los Angeles, demonstrators last night gathered in a small stretch of the city. Some came to protest in solidarity, even if they were scared to identify themselves. Joel, Protester: I am a U.S. citizen. And that's why I'm here. I'm here for my mom who can't be here. I'm here for my uncles and my family members who cannot be here today. But anybody could just look at me and be like, that's a brown guy right there. He must not be a citizen. So, even with my citizenship, I'm still fearful of being out here. Marcia Biggs: Kira Conner has lived in L.A. for 35 years. Yesterday, law enforcement and protesters stopped right outside her building. How do you feel about calling in the Marines and the National Guard? Kira Conner, Los Angeles Resident: I have mixed feelings. I have lived here long enough through many, many riots from Northridge to this, to Rodney King to all that. So it was bound to happen and needed. So I don't think the mayor or Newsom handled anything correctly. That's my opinion. Did Trump overreact? Absolutely. Marcia Biggs: She says Trump is right to deport undocumented criminals, but the way the raids were conducted is ripping L.A. apart and has struck some of the city's most vulnerable communities. Kira Conner: Instead of being the nice, showy president, someone has to make moves. At the same time, you don't go after 30- and 40-year-old people in the Garment District that have been working there. And I know that they have grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They make up L.A. They make up downtown. And now they're gone, their families ripped apart. To do this right after our wildfires, this is insanity. We can't take anymore. Jorge-Mario Cabrera, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights: We believe that about 200 people or more have been detained during the past three or four days. Marcia Biggs: Jorge-Mario Cabrera with the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights. He says they have been inundated with calls from families, desperate for information about their loved ones. Jorge-Mario Cabrera: We only know of probably a dozen or so individuals that we can actually talk to about their case, which means that the others could just simply be already deported or on their way or forced to sign, which is what we're also hearing, that people are being not forced, but certainly encouraged to sign their self-deportation. Marcia Biggs: How scared are people? Jorge-Mario Cabrera: Today, I spoke with a couple of workers that went into to do what they need to do to earn their living, honestly. And I asked them directly, why are you here? Aren't you afraid? One of them said: "What I do with my fear is, I bring it with me, put it in my pocket and go on. There's no other option for me." Marcia Biggs: Cabrera believes that this show of force is used as psychological warfare and a provocation, an attempt to show those who support immigrants as unruly and un-American — Amna. Amna Nawaz: And, Marcia, we should note you're standing outside that Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown L.A. You reported over 200 people arrested in those ICE immigration enforcement raids over the last three or four days. What more can you tell us about the circumstances around those raids and who was arrested? Marcia Biggs: Well, we don't know very much, Amna, because we haven't been able to speak to anyone who's been detained. But Cabrera described warrantless dragnets meant to target indiscriminately as many Latinos as possible. Amna Nawaz: Marcia, what about in terms of the protests? Give us a sense of what you see and hear going on around you right now and if there's any sense of where things go from here. Marcia Biggs: So the scene here has been pretty quiet, almost festival-like, for the last hour or so. We just heard a flashbang. We just heard another one. This is kind of how it's been going. This is what we saw last night. Of course, we mentioned some looting, but, in general, last night was pretty nonviolent standoff, which would erupt briefly when protesters would set off fireworks and then the LAPD would push them back. Also keep in mind that this is happening in a very small slice of the city. It's only a few blocks of downtown L.A. And, in the rest of the city, Angelenos are going about their lives as normal. Amna Nawaz: All right, that's Marcia Biggs reporting for us in downtown Los Angeles. Marcia, our thanks to you and the team. Please stay safe. Marcia Biggs: Thank you.

5th Anniversary of the Death of George Floyd — The Damage Continues, Part 2

In dealing with the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles police chief described his force as “overwhelmed” by the protesters and rioters. The city, as is the case with many of America’s other large cities, suffers from inadequate manpower. The size of the LAPD is the smallest in 20 years. The George Floyd protest/riots-inspired “cops-are-out-to-get blacks” narrative is not just false and insulting to cops -- it gets people killed. The narrative has caused police officers to quit or retire early, and the negative image of the police discourages new applicants, resulting in manpower shortages in city after city. The fake narrative results in what some call the George Floyd Effect or the Ferguson Effect, the phenomenon of cops pulling back from “proactive policing,” resulting in fewer arrests even though many categories of crime have increased in some cities in recent years. This means more violent crime and more deaths in urban America -- where a disproportionate amount of crime takes place -- than would otherwise have occurred. Isaac Kriegman, a former Thomson Reuters data scientist, studied what he called “excess” deaths because of the diminished use of proactive policing. He, as mentioned, found that most of these excess deaths were the very black and brown people the left purports to care so much about. Kriegman said complaints about “disproportionate” black arrests and encounters with the police ignore the disproportionate amount of crime committed by blacks: “In plain English, the number of arrests for violent crime is proportional to the number of violent crimes actually committed by each group. Black people are not arrested at a rate disproportionate to the number of crimes committed, suggesting that black neighborhoods are not ‘over policed.’ Instead, the reason more blacks are arrested for violent crimes is because black neighborhoods suffer more from violent crime. In turn, the primary reason there are more arrests, confrontations with police and, consequently, police shootings in predominantly black neighborhoods is because police disproportionately encounter perpetrators of violent crime there.” Kriegman examined the nearly immediate change in policing following a high-profile death of a black person by the police, a death considered by the media and activists as “unlawful,” often regardless of the circumstances. Kriegman wrote: “In 2014, after the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, the BLM movement’s anti-police rhetoric and propaganda found a receptive audience. As police were demonized with falsehoods, their morale declined and their willingness to engage in proactive policing, such as street stops for suspicious behavior and other forms of policing designed to prevent firearms crimes, plummeted. Police officers reported that they were scared or unwilling to confront suspects because any confrontation could escalate into a situation where they would need to use force.” Kriegman reviewed the work of Roland Fryer, the Harvard economist who studied the Ferguson Effect. Kriegman wrote: “After an exhaustive statistical analysis, (Fryer) concluded that not only was something like the Ferguson Effect real, but in just the five cities he examined, it caused a staggering 900 excess murders, and 34,000 excess felonies that would not have otherwise occurred -- and it was expected to cause hundreds more murders in those cities in the following years. Extrapolated to other cities and time periods this result suggested thousands of additional murder victims nationwide.” Police Magazine discussed a poll asking self-described “very liberal” people how many unarmed black men did the police kill in 2019. Half of the “very liberal” thought cops killed 1,000 or more, with 8% guessing 10,000. Thirty-nine percent of self-described “liberals” put the number of unarmed black men killed by cops in 2019 at 1,000 or more, with 5% guessing 10,000. The actual number, according to The Washington Post? Twelve. Just 13% of “conservatives” thought the police killed 1,000 or more, and only 1% of “conservatives” put the number at 10,000. This means “right-wingers” who refuse to buy the “police-are-out-to-get-black people” rhetoric are not indifferent to the “plight of blacks who suffer from anti-black police systemic racism.” The George Floyd/Ferguson false narrative encourages more riots, more property damage and more flight by insurance companies. Business owners and homeowners end up paying higher premiums from the insurance companies still willing to insure, and the owners’ property appreciation suffers because of the omnipresent threat of riots.

Apple preaches a gospel of inclusion — but proves Christianity isn't included

According to some, Christianity is in vogue.A recent New York Times article, for example, called attention to the fact that “necklaces with cross pendants are appearing with renewed prevalence” on “red carpets, on social media, at protests by high-ranking Democrats and in the White House.”To make fun of the practice is nothing short of sacrilege. But even celebrities donning cross necklaces are not enough to convince mainstream television producers that the world’s largest religious group deserves the same basic respect as any other religion or worldview.Episode six of the popular Apple TV+ show “Your Friends & Neighbors” shamelessly depicts characters desecrating the Eucharist — what Catholics believe is the very body of Christ – inside a Catholic church. The depiction reeks of intolerance and insult toward Catholicism, and it has no place being produced and promoted by Apple, a company that claims diversity and inclusion as core values. The least Apple should do is issue a formal apology to viewers. Even better, the company should retract the episode in keeping with its tolerance policies.Catholic or not, viewers can tell that the scene in question bears little relevance to the show’s plot, making it nothing more than a mean-spirited and targeted attempt to mock Catholicism. In the scene, two main characters break into a Catholic church, steal consecrated hosts from the tabernacle, eat them as snacks, and profane the Eucharist before engaging in sexual activity in the pews.Despite how Apple inappropriately portrays it, the Eucharist is far from a mere piece of bread or meaningless cup of wine.Catholics believe that it is the body, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ himself. The practice of receiving communion was instituted by Christ at the Last Supper, and since then, receiving his body at Mass is “the source and summit of the Christian life.”To make fun of the practice is nothing short of sacrilege.RELATED: New York Times discovers cross necklaces — then things get predictably absurd sedmak/iStock/Getty Images PlusWhat’s more, Apple’s affront comes at a time when Catholics are in a celebratory and hopeful frame of mind following the recent election of our new pope, Leo XIV.It is also deeply disturbing that Apple would go so far as to break its own commitment to “a North Star of dignity, respect, and opportunity for everyone,” as its mission statement reads. The company claims its values “create a culture of collaboration where different experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives come together to make something magical and meaningful. ... We’re not all the same. And that remains one of our greatest strengths.”But promoting content that degrades the Catholic faith directly violates this principle. It also directly contradicts Apple CEO Tim Cook’s self-proclaimed “reverence for religious freedom.” Cook explained in a 2015 opinion editorial that “Apple is open. Open to everyone, regardless of where they come from, what they look like, how they worship or who they love.”Unfortunately, Apple’s blasphemy is part of a nationwide targeting of Catholicism that has permeated our culture, even while influencers adorn themselves in Christian jewelry.Since 2020, more than 500 Catholic churches have suffered physical attacks and vandalism including acts of arson, spray-painting and graffiti of satanic messages, rocks and bricks thrown through windows, and statues destroyed. Likewise, in 2024, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released a video of herself placing a Dorito chip on Canadian journalist Liz Plank’s tongue as if to mimic a Catholic priest administering communion. After pushback from offended Catholics, Whitmer issued an apology.RELATED: The dark logic behind Gretchen Whitmer's black Dorito 'Eucharist' mockeryNow, faithful Catholics are calling on Apple to remove its blasphemous episode of “Your Friends & Neighbors” from its platform and return to its guiding principle of diversity and tolerance for all perspectives, including the practices of Catholicism. We hope that Catholics will no longer have to endure such discriminatory and hateful content when they watch shows meant to entertain and enlighten viewers of all backgrounds.

Congress to codify DOGE cuts while conservatives lead the charge

The House is set to vote on the first rescissions package on Thursday, which would codify $9.4 billion worth of spending cuts. Although certain provisions have become controversial to Democrats and some moderate Republicans, conservatives in the House have championed the Department of Government Efficiency cuts. This specific package would cut $1.1 billion in foreign aid, including the U.S. Agency for International Development, and it would kneecap biased media platforms like PBS and NPR that have been publicly funded through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. While $9.4 billion is just a drop in the bucket, conservative lawmakers told Blaze News this is just the first step toward "restoring sanity to Washington's reckless spending culture." Russell Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, told Blaze News that he was confident the DOGE cuts will pass and indicated that he would send more to Capitol Hill if it proved to be an effective tool to rein in spending.'This rescissions package is just the tip of the iceberg.'RELATED: Democrats vote overwhelmingly to allow illegal aliens to continue voting in key district Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images“H.R. 4 is a strong first step toward restoring sanity to Washington’s reckless spending culture,” Republican Rep. Ralph Norman of South Carolina told Blaze News. “It eliminates $9.4 billion in bloated foreign aid programs and taxpayer-funded liberal media like NPR and PBS. These are the kinds of cuts the American people expect from a Republican majority that promised fiscal responsibility.”“The House Freedom Caucus fully supports this package and the broader effort to cut waste, fraud, and abuse in Washington," Norman added. "And this is just the start.”The House first passed a rule Wednesday night in a 213-207 vote that allows it to proceed with the vote on the rescissions package Thursday. The rule also implemented changes to the "big, beautiful bill," which prompted a "no" vote from Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky.Despite this, Massie maintained that his opposition was to the changes to reconciliation and that he plans to vote in favor of the DOGE cuts. RELATED: White House works to send DOGE cuts package to Congress Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty ImagesMassie has bucked his party on multiple key votes this Congress, but even he joined the House Freedom Caucus and other conservatives in backing the DOGE cuts. "We have always known there is waste in government, and this rescissions package is just the tip of the iceberg,” Republican Rep. Marlin Stutzman of Indiana told Blaze News. “I stand with HFC in urging Speaker Johnson to get the cuts to the House floor, then to the president’s desk as quickly as possible. Americans do not want their tax dollars spent on woke programs overseas or at home and it is about time they got their money back!”"The duty of Congress is to represent The People, and today the House Freedom Caucus will do exactly that — by voting in support of the rescissions package," Republican Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania told Blaze News. "This will codify the massively popular cuts in waste, fraud, and abuse rampant across the federal government, enacts my No Propaganda bill to defund NPR and PBS, and finally topples USAID — the golden goose of the globalist left. Let’s get this across the finish line once and for all.”Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!

I'm bad at soulslikes. There, I said it. While I often love their aesthetics, I consistently find myself bouncing off the likes of Bloodborne and Elden Ring simply because I go through phases of doing incredibly well before getting absolutely obliterated. Yet I keep going back to them. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33's endgame is my current conquest - I'm determined to defeat Simon, the same way I was determined to defeat the Nameless Puppet when I reviewed Lies of P. As much as I lose the plot, for whatever reason getting my ass handed to me is just too much fun, and that's why, when Lies of P Overture shadow dropped at Summer Game Fest, I felt myself sigh, strap on my metallic arm, and get ready to return to Krat.
