Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent admitted he had to laugh when Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA) claimed that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) had implemented updated technology in recent years. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) on Thursday grilled New York Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul during a hearing on sanctuary states over crimes committed by illegal aliens. Stefanik, who is rumored to be eyeing a run for governor, first highlighted executive orders signed by Hochul that maintain New York as a sanctuary state, meaning the state will not cooperate with federal authorities on illegal immigration. Then, the Republican listed a series of heinous crimes committed by illegals, including the violent sexual assault of minors and one illegal immigrant burning a sleeping woman alive on the subway. “Governor Hochul, on your first day in office, you signed Executive Order 1,” Stefanik said. “And you extended this executive order not once, not twice, but three times — most recently January 16 of this year.”  The order, Stefanik read, was a continuation of sanctuary state policies. “It is the policy of the state that state officers or employees shall not disclose information to federal immigration authorities for the purpose of federal civil immigration enforcement,” she read. “It goes on to say, ‘Law enforcement officers may not use resources, equipment, or personnel for the purpose of detecting and apprehending any individual suspected or wanted for violating a civil immigration officer. Law enforcement officers have no authority in the state of New York to take any policy action solely because the person is an undocumented alien.”  Hochul attempted to contend that the order actually says New York will cooperate with federal immigration authorities. “No, it does not say that,” Stefanik shot back. “I read what it says, and let me talk to you about the results.” One illegal immigrant, she said, “found a 15-year-old girl, threatened her with a metal pole, told her to get into the back seat of his car. He took her clothes off, and he violently raped her in Albany, New York.”  In another example, the governor said she was unfamiliar with the illegal immigrant Stefanik was talking about. “I bet you’re going to be familiar when I remind you,” Stefanik told Hochul. “He found a sleeping woman on the subway, lit her on fire, and burned her alive.” “This is in Kathy Hochul’s New York,” the representative said. “And as I’m sure you are aware, and I’ll remind you: [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement] issued an order to detain this violent criminal, but that was rejected by New York officials due to sanctuary state laws.” Hochul responded by calling the crimes “horrific” and contending New York works with ICE. “You did not in this case,” Stefanik responded. “They are walking on the streets because of your policies and your executive order that you signed three times.”  Stefanik then outlined sexual assaults against minors, ages 11 and five. “You’re not advocating for these victims,” she said. “This is a five-year-old who was raped on Long Island in Nassau County.” “You are not advocating on behalf of these victims,” Stefanik repeated. “You are shielding illegals. California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom reportedly didn’t even pick up the phone when former Vice President Kamala Harris called him this week about the anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles County. A voicemail? Oh girl. She also called Los Angeles Democratic Mayor Karen Bass. Wonder if she had to leave them voicemails, too? Democrats are currently trying to read the tea leaves on whether Harris will run for California governor next year, and so far it’s been a messy guessing game — apparently a fake post saying Harris would not be running confused insiders this week. However, Democratic strategist Steve Maviglio thinks Harris may be “eyeing Newsom’s rising stock as she contemplates her next moves,” according to POLITICO. Newsom is getting the attention right now as he clashes publicly with President Donald Trump over Trump’s decision to send National Guard and Marine troops to Los Angeles. Riots erupted in Los Angeles County over the weekend in response to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids. Protesters burned multiple cars and smashed windows at the Los Angeles Police Department headquarters as police struggled to respond. An area of downtown L.A. was eventually put under a curfew. Meanwhile, similar violent protests have cropped up in New York City, Seattle, Chicago, Austin, Las Vegas, and Washington, DC., among other places. On Sunday, Harris endorsed the protests, claiming they have been “overwhelmingly peaceful.” Mostly peaceful protests, remember that one? “Protest is a powerful tool — essential in the fight for justice,” Harris said, adding later, “I continue to support the millions of Americans who are standing up to protect our most fundamental rights and freedoms.” The former California senator also lashed out at Trump for sending troops to Los Angeles, accusing him of “stoking fear.” She called the move “a dangerous escalation meant to provoke chaos” and “part of the Trump Administration’s cruel, calculated agenda to spread panic and division.” By the way, it’s not just a California governor bid Harris is supposedly mulling. Rowling responded to a post describing the behavior of Lilly Tino, a man who identifies as a woman and frequently posts videos of himself being “misgendered” at restaurants and complaining to wait staff and his followers about it. Tino has over 400,000 followers on TikTok and 15.8 million likes on his posts. Lately, the activist has been ranting about how “trans men” shouldn’t be criticized for taking photos of themselves in the women’s restroom because celebrities do it all the time. But commenters pointed out that many of the influencer photos Tino refers to only show one person, whereas his photos from the bathroom include people in the background who are having their rights violated. Disney and Universal are teaming up to sue the AI image generation firm Midjourney for what they’re describing as copyright infringement. Midjourney is a popular AI platform which utilizes user prompts to create original images in seconds. But the entertainment companies claim the model uses their copyrighted content to spit out images that are incredibly similar to the originals, representing a violation of copyright in their estimation. The lawsuit filed Wednesday in California described Midjourney as a “quintessential copyright free-rider and a bottomless pit of plagiarism” that’s responsible for “endless unauthorized copies of Disney’s and Universal’s copyrighted works,” per The New York Times. While this is not the first AI-based lawsuit, this represents the first time any major entertainment company has filed this type of complaint. In the case of other lawsuits, AI companies claimed that their tools are generating new creations and that the resulting output counts as “fair use” per copyright law. The entertainment companies disagree. “We are bullish on the promise of A.I. technology and optimistic about how it can be used responsibly as a tool to further human creativity,” Disney’s general counsel Horacio Gutierrez told NYT in an email. “But piracy is piracy, and the fact that it’s done by an A.I. company does not make it any less infringing.” Gift Dad an All Access Membership. The lawsuit is demanding $150,000 per infringed work in addition to Midjourney ceasing copyright infringement in the future. If Disney and Universal win the case, the payout could total up to $20 million for 150 protected images they claim have been infringed upon.

Democrat Rep. Stephen Lynch (MA) on Thursday lashed out at President Donald Trump and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, comparing the agents to Nazis and their secret police known as the Gestapo. During a hearing on “sanctuary” policies, Lynch called ICE agents “thugs” who were committing “abductions” in a way reminiscent of the Gestapo “grabbing people off the streets of Poland.” “It does look like a Gestapo operation! It does look like the Gestapo!” Lynch yelled, describing one alleged ICE encounter. “That’s an appropriate comparison. That’s exactly what it was like!” Notably, Minnesota Gov.
