The FBI announced the arrest of more than 30 people, including Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, as part of a federal investigation into an alleged illegal gambling and sports rigging operation linked to the mafia. Former NBA player Damon Jones was also arrested as part of the investigation. “We are here in New York to announce a historic arrest across a wide, sweeping criminal enterprise that envelops both the NBA and La Cosa Nostra,” FBI Director Kash Patel said at a press conference in Brooklyn, New York. “The FBI led a coordinated takedown across 11 states to arrest over 30 individuals today responsible for this case, which is very much ongoing. The arrests stem from two major fraud-related cases: one involving sports betting, and the other linked to “rigged poker games,” Nocella said. The latter indictment encompasses 31 defendants, including Billups, who allegedly “participated in a nationwide scheme” to rig the games using “high-tech cheating technology to steal millions of dollars from victims in underground poker games that were secretly fixed,” Nocella said. Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares heightened his calls for Democratic challenger Jay Jones to drop out of the race after reports revealed Jones is apparently under an open criminal investigation. “Jay Jones had already disqualified himself with his violent text messages fantasizing about the death of his political opponent and their young children. Now we learn that he may have misled the courts to avoid jail time after recklessly driving 116 miles per hour on one of the most dangerous stretches of interstate in Virginia,” Miyares said. “It is not possible for Jay Jones to fulfill the duties of this office while under an open criminal investigation. Jones, who is the current Democratic nominee for Virginia attorney general, was sentenced to 1,000 hours of community service after a reckless driving conviction in 2022 in New Kent County. The appointing of a special prosecutor comes amid questions on whether Jones served some of the community service hours for his own political action committee. In addition, Jones is also under fire for recently unearthed text messages from 2022 in which Jones talked about shooting a former Virginia GOP House Speaker in a hypothetical scenario. While a judge in New Kent County signed off on an order to appoint Williamsburg James City County Commonwealth’s Attorney Nate Green as the special prosecutor in the Jones’ case, Green stated a new order will have to be requested due to him being unable to accept. “A special prosecutor has been appointed to investigate Jay Jones’ attempt to scheme his way out of accountability for his reckless driving charge. Green as special prosecutor. Green, whose jurisdiction is adjacent to New Kent, is based out of and also includes the independent city of Williamsburg. Green will be able to “exercise all powers of the Attorney for the Commonwealth in this matter,” Bondurant wrote. New York City Mayor Eric Adams will endorse former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, whom he recently called a “snake” and a “liar,” in the election to replace him. In an interview with The New York Times, Adams said he would campaign with Cuomo in neighborhoods where he is most popular in hopes of convincing residents to vote for the former governor. Cuomo for mayor and intends to campaign alongside him,” Adams spokesperson Todd Shapiro said in a statement. “The time and locations for their joint appearances are currently being finalized.” A spokesperson for the Cuomo campaign declined to comment. Adams’ endorsement comes on the heels of Cuomo’s final debate performance, after which he joined Adams courtside at the New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. In a photo posted to X, both men can be seen smiling and giving the thumbs up. During Wednesday’s debate, Cuomo said he was seeking and would welcome Adams’ endorsement.
