I crawled out of the sack on Thursday with one goal in mind, bring you the best, most complete motorcycle news column possible.
I tell everyone and their mother not to bother me on Thursdays. It sends the wrong message. They get: He’s in his office, on the computer all day on Thursdays. Let’s call him.
So, I stepped into my news file for a minute and then all hell broke loose. The Bank called, my favorite Insurance person called about the VLXAFL. It’s now registered and insured. I ordered a Navy Vietnam Veteran plate and I’m ready to ride.
Felicia called as she landed in Bloomsberg, PA for the Easyriders Rodeo. Penny reached out about a deal with Hardcore Choppers in Florida. A Hessian from Yucca Valley, CA called about flow bench in Sturgis and we’re planning an Easyriders Streamliner Party at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum in September on the 20th. I received several calls around putting all the elements together.
The list rolled on, but it’s all good and means progress on all fronts.

NATIONAL ACADEMIES– Ignores the Scientific Method
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) has created a committee purportedly to have an unbiased assessment of the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to repeal the regulation of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a pollutant, which is known as the Endangerment Finding.
The NASEM announcement of the study stated that the committee should “contain the requisite expertise to address its task and whether the points of views of individual members are adequately balanced such that the committee as a whole can address its charge objectively.”
In our review of the backgrounds of committee members, we found that 13 of the 15 have a strong bias toward linking increasing atmospheric CO2 to supposedly dangerous global warming and a threat to human health. In other words, the committee was constructed to reinforce the very claim it is purportedly designed to test rather than carry out an impartial investigation.
By populating the committee with members whose views embrace the so-called “consensus” opinion that increasing CO2 is leading to dangerous warming and harm to human health, the NASEM has stacked the deck to arrange a pre-determined outcome which will oppose repeal of the Endangerment Finding.
The possibility of an honest evaluation of the science underlying CO2’s actual role in the environment, which is that of a plant food necessary for all life, is unlikely. The formal comment period on the provisional committee slate ends on September 11, 2025 at 11:59 ET.

AMA PRO RACING THIS WEEKEND–Be There, Be There, Be There!
The AFT Singles presented by KICKER title fight is on the cusp of being decided on the most high-profile stage possible as Progressive American Flat Track, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, arrives at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois for the Springfield Mile I & II presented by Drag Specialties, on Saturday, August 30, and Sunday, August 31.
The evidence continues to mount in support of Tom Drane’s (No. 59 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) claim as one of the greatest riders the category has ever seen.
The Australian now ranks third all-time in AFT Singles race wins, a tally he upped to 16 last time out in Peoria. That same victory also saw him become just the third ever rider to complete the AFT Singles Grand Slam.
Additionally, the triumph increased his active podium streak to nine – a number that equaled the all-time record… which also happened to be posted by Drane in a run that started last season and ended earlier this year.
The Estenson Racing star led the class in Main Event wins a year ago (seven) and has a shot at bettering that number this year. If he wins out this season, he’ll both tie Dallas Daniels and Kody Kopp for most wins in a single season (eight) and Shayna Texter-Bauman for second in career wins (19) in the process.
There’s really only one major goal he has yet to accomplish in the class – the AFT Singles national championship. And he is on the verge of doing that at this weekend’s Springfield Mile, a race he has won three times running.
The Magic Numbers
Only two riders – second-ranked Chase Saathoff (No. 88 RWR/Parts Plus Honda CRF450R) and third-ranked Trevor Brunner (No. 21 American Honda/Mission Foods CRF450R) – remain within even 100 points of Drane let alone still technically in contention for the throne.
Drane’s advantage currently stands at 42 points over Saathoff and 60 over Brunner.
Should he lead both by 50 points or more following Saturday’s Springfield Mile I, he will officially be the 2025 AFT Singles champion. That minimum margin drops to just 25 points following Sunday’s Springfield Mile II.
And since Saathoff is still on the mend and won’t be able to compete in either race this weekend, he is effectively eliminated from contention as well.
In other words, the chances of it happening not just in Springfield, but on Saturday, are extremely strong.
Drane only needs to pick up nine points for the remainder of the year to extinguish Brunner, even in the event the Turner Honda pilot goes 1-1-1 down the stretch. Nine points can be acquired any number of ways – including a 15-15-15 conclusion to the season – or via a single eighth-place outing.
Keep in mind that Drane finished top three in nine consecutive races, then fourth, and then top three again for nine more races in succession.
No matter what the math says, don’t look for Drane to go cruising around for 15ths or even an eighth. There are still wins and podium records that require breaking.
Still in Play
As mentioned above, Drane has won the three most recent Springfield Miles. However, those were all certified barnburners.
In the first of those three, nine riders finished within 0.637 seconds of the win. In the second, four riders were within 0.147 seconds of victory. And in the most recent, five riders took the checkered flag within 0.770 seconds of the win.
So, in any event, the racing this weekend figures to be fantastic.
And while the championship fight has nearly been put to bed, there’s still much to sort out down the order.
Behind Drane, Saathoff, and Brunner we have:
144 points: Tarren Santero (No. 75 Mission Roof Systems Honda CRF450R)
131 points: Kage Tadman (No. 288 1st Impressions Race Team Husqvarna FC450)
123 points: Bradon Pfanders (No. 83 Hannum’s HD/Pfanders Racing KTM 450 SX-F)
123 points: Aidan RoosEvans (No. 26 FRA Trust/ATV’s and More Yamaha YZ450F)
115 points: Jared Lowe (No. 63 Big R/Little Debbie Racing Honda CRF450R)
As close as they are and with a strong likelihood of a massive lead pack, there’s going to be a lot of opportunity for movement in Springfield.
Neither Santero nor RoosEvans enjoyed particularly strong DuQuoin Miles, but both are rolling quite nicely now.
Tadman, meanwhile, still has a shot at fourth despite not taking part in the opening three rounds of the season. While he struggled even more mightily in DuQuoin than Santero or RoosEvans, the rookie has an opportunity to show what he learned given another shot at a Mile.
He’ll also do so on a 1st Impressions Husqvarna after signing with the team prior to the Peoria TT. Last season, 1st Impressions-built-and-tuned Husqvarnas finished on the podium at a Mile on three occasions, including twice in Springfield courtesy of Chad Cose (No. 49 1st Impressions Race Team Husqvarna FC450).
Speaking of Cose, despite not being included on that list of riders fighting for fourth above, he could easily prove the spoiler of all spoilers this weekend.
Grand National Atmosphere
Bring the family and enjoy not only the greatest spectacle on two wheels, but also live music, big-screen viewing, vendor displays, dedicated motorcycle parking, and a variety of food and beverage options.
All ticketholders will have access to the AMCA Motorcycle Swap Meet taking place both days in the infield. In fact, there will be three bike shows in all – the Infield Bike Show as part of the AMCA Motorcycle Swap Meet, the Flat Track Racing Show at the entrance of the grandstands, and the Vintage Iron Rider’s Motorcycle Club display.
At the Springfield Mile, Bikes and Tickets Move Fast
And you had better move fast too because tickets are $10 off if purchased prior to Wednesday.
Act now and Infield tickets are still just $20 (kids 12 and under free with a paid adult), while Reserved Grandstand tickets start at $35 (all ages).
For $150, fans also have the opportunity to receive a VIP Experience that provides an upgraded Reserved Grandstand ticket of their choice, food and beverage in the VIP area, and all day access to the pits.

HISTORY LESSON FROM COMPETITION DISTRIBUTING–Kickstarts & Chronicles:
AJS Model D
The AJS Model D is a British motorcycle made by A. J. Stevens & Co. Ltd in Wolverhampton between 1912 and 1925. With production halted by the First World War AJS managed to develop the Model D into a popular sidecar machine, and it was eventually replaced by the larger capacity AJS Model E.
In 1905, the Stevens Motor Manufacturing Company built a V-twin motorcycle powered by a JA Prestwich Industries Ltd motor, with leading-link front forks and a swinging fork at the rear. A new company, A J Stevens & Co (AJS), was founded in 1909 to manufacture motorcycles and at the 1912 London Motorcycle show they launched the 698cc side valve AJS Model D. Featuring cylinders at 50 degrees and chain drive to a three speed countershaft gearbox with a hand gear change, the original engines had quickly removable cylinder heads but after problems with oil leaks a more permanent head was specified for 1913. The side valve engine was lubricated by a ‘total loss’ system operated by a hand pump. Ignition was achieved with a Splitdorf Magneto, and the fuel system featured an Amac automatic carburettor. The silencer was made from cast aluminium, and the frame was a tubular ‘diamond’ construction, with Brampton bi-flex front forks, which had an unusual two-way movement, and quickly detachable wheels. The sidecar version of the Model D proved particularly successful and became so popular that AJS was not able to meet demand.
After the war ended in November 1918 and the Ministry restrictions were lifted, AJS restarted motorcycle production at a new factory at Graisley Hill in Wolverhampton, and the Model D was resurrected with the capacity increased to 748cc and a new design of saddle and fuel tank. The idea of detachable cylinder heads was reintroduced with a cross strap and tie bolts to help ensure that they remained oil tight.[1] At the Graisley Hill works AJS had their own foundry, enamelling facility, frameworks and press as well as the motorcycle production line. Except for a few electrical and rubber components, the whole of the Model D was made in-house, and the company also supplied engines to Brough Superior, OK Supreme, and the Morgan Motor Company.
An updated 7 hp version of the Model D was launched at the Olympia Motorcycle Show in November 1920. In 1923, a cheaper version called the Model D1 was introduced, and 1924 was the best year for sales, which continued to outstrip the capacity of the factory despite increasing the Graiseley Hill works to 230,000 square feet.

Now in its second year, Indian Motorcycle has set an ambitious fundraising target of $250,000, underscoring its ongoing commitment to honoring and supporting families of those who served. Thanks to the steadfast support of its rider community, Indian Motorcycle is well on its way, having already raised more than $60,000 toward this year’s goal.
“Indian Motorcycle continues to be an incredible ally in our mission to provide educational scholarships to the families of fallen and disabled service members and first responders,” said Lt. Col. Dan Rooney, Founder and CEO of Folds of Honor. “The support generated through Ride With Us Demo Days and the National Charity Ride not only raises critical funds but also unites the riding community in a powerful show of patriotism and purpose.”
Folds of Honor has awarded nearly 62,000 educational scholarships totaling approximately $290 million in educational impact. The Folds of Honor National Charity Ride serves as one of many events featuring the Indian Motorcycle Riders Group (IMRG). With approximately 137 chapters and 7,500 riders from
around the country, IMRG hosts hundreds of rides and events each year for members and general motorcycle riders alike. To learn more, visit the IMRG webpage.

IT NEVER ENDS–We are planning a Streamliner party at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum on September 20th to celebrate the Easyriders World’s Fastest Streamliner being moved to the museum. Crew members are going to show up from the Easyriders and the Jammer era. It’s going to be historic and a good time.
I’ve hit a couple of bike nights in Saint Onge, SD at the SOB bar. The owner is cool and is dedicated to the growth of good food and good times in Saint Onge.
Next week bike night will rock Downtown Sturgis at Bandit’s 5-Ball Emporium on Main Street. Hell, this looks to be the Easyriders Magazine Headquarters in the near future. Hang on.
