Cross Canadian Ragweed Walks Out To Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” At First ‘The Boys From Oklahoma’ Reunion Show
Ragweed is BACK and all is right in the world.
Hell has officially frozen over and for the first time in nearly 15 years, Cross Canadian Ragweed is performing a ticketed show (not including their impromptu Mile 0 Festival warmup), and safe to say it’s the biggest crowd they’ve stepped on stage in front of… by A LOT.
Formed in Stillwater, Oklahoma in the mid-90s, Cross Canadian Ragweed became a cornerstone of the Red Dirt movement beginning in 1994, and took off with the release of their debut album, Carney, in 1998. They would go on to release 7 studio and 3 live albums before disbanding in 2010 with Cody Canada and Jeremy Plato going on to form Cody Canada and the Departed. They performed their final show at Joe’s Bar in Chicago (where Whiskey Riff was founded), and I specifically remember wanting to go and not being able to make it for some reason. I practically lived at Joe’s back then, and still regret not being able to make that show.
Nevertheless, it’s hard to overstate their importance to the Red Dirt scene, and perhaps even the Texas country music scene. Just look at modern day country rockers coming out of Texas and Oklahoma, artists like Kolby Cooper, Koe Wetzel, Dylan Wheeler, Treaty Oak Revival, Kody West, Tanner Usrey… I’d bet they would all cite Ragweed as a major influence.
But if you needed any more proof of just how much of an icon this band truly is, just look at the reunion show. Dubbed “The Boys From Oklahoma,” and featuring fellow Red Dirt legends Turnpike Troubadours, Jason Boland and the Stragglers, Stoney LaRue, and the Mike McClure Band, Ragweed sold out 4 consecutive nights at Oklahoma State University’s Boone Pickens Stadium… a college football stadium that holds over 50,000 fans. When Doussan Music Group, the event organizer, brainstormed the initial show on April 12 with Oklahoma State Athletics, the expectation was for a single show that would, hopefully, sell 40,000 tickets.
But that number was blown out of the water when there were 150,000 fans registered for presale in a single day, and over 200,000 still logged on to get tickets after all the presale tickets sold out, which prompted DMG to reach out to Cross Canadian Ragweed about adding the additional two shows. They also have another show down at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, set for August 23rd of this year. That one also features a stacked group of openers in Turnpike Troubadours, Wade Bowen, Shane Smith and the Saints, and American Aquarium.
And… the wait is over.
The Boys From Oklahoma reunion show kicked off last night in Stillwater, and the boys couldn’t have picked a better walk-out song… Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”
Objectively hilarious.
Of course, Cody said for years that the band would never get back together, and relatively recently. We did a podcast with him in 2022 and he said it wasn’t gonna happen. And then in another podcast this year, he explained how it all came together:
We went to see a metal show: Ice Nine Kills. We were in the Hulu Theater underneath Madison Square Garden. And I thought… I Googled it. How many people does Madison Square Garden hold? Eddie Vedder said you’re nobody until you play Madison Square Garden. I thought, ‘What if? What if we did a destination, one show?’ And I think we could do 19,000 people. So we got back to the hotel bar that night and my wife was like, ‘Goals, who’s got goals?’ That’s how she works. And she came to me and I was teary-eyed. She goes, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ I said, ‘I think I’m ready (to get the band back together).’”
He went on to say:
“I was ready to put down that discomfort. It wasn’t a great breakup, but nobody died… nobody killed anybody. We were just overworked at 30 years old with brand new babies on the ground. We should have said nicer things, and I’m a very stubborn person, and so are the rest of the guys. So we just didn’t talk for 15 years
Needless to say, it’s great that Cross Canadian Ragweed is back together again in 2025. Not to mention, Turnpike has a brand new album out today… what a great day for the state of Oklahoma, eh? And there’s three more nights of magic left to go… stay tuned.

You can hear Cody Canada talk all about it in the latest episode of the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast:
During our time with the legendary Red Dirt artist for the podcast, he graciously performed two songs. One was a Cross Canadian Ragweed classic – “Dime Bag” – and the other was a song that hasn’t seen the light of day… until now.
Canada played a song called “Paper Moon” for us, and we’re now sharing that with the rest of the world that’s been chomping at the bit for anything new from Canada.
