The end of an era. Of course, Willie Nelson has been a longtime advocate for marijuana and the legalization of it across the country, and even opened his own cannabis company, Willie’s Reserve, in 2015. It’s part of the center of his brand, and has been for many years, and he actually credits it for saving his life, as well as other people’s lives, because it helped him majorly cut back on drinking and the dangers that come with drinking too much too often. In an interview with E! News several years ago, he said: “Well, it not only saved my life, it probably saved some other people’s lives, because before I smoked marijuana, I was drinking a lot. And I might have killed a lot of people, too. So I’m just glad that that didn’t happen. I’m glad we live through all of bad times.” If that ain’t the most willie Nelson secret to life there is, I don’t know what could be… But he’s a man after my heart, as he says that he’ll still have a drink of tequila every now and then, too: “I still take a drink of tequila occasionally, but not like I used to.” There have been countless stories that are associated with Willie and weed, with people from Snoop Dogg to Toby Keith, but I think Luke Combs still might have the best one… you should ready that one HERE. Willie has continued to release albums in his ’90s, and he put out his 77th solo studio album, and 154th album overall, Oh What A Beautiful World in April, which focuses on the songs of Rodney Crowell and his extensive discography. He’s also currently out on his extensive Outlaw Music Festival Tour, which is all over the country and runs through the fall, though it sounds like he might really be slowing down in terms of his marijuana intake, as he revealed in an interview with Forbes that he “doesn’t really do anything now much except a few edibles.” Words I never thought I’d he utter, but more power to him, honestly: “Well, I can’t smoke anything anymore. My lungs have already said, ‘Don’t do that.’ So, I don’t really do anything now much except a few edibles.” It was known for a while that he couldn’t actually smoke anything, but to hear he’s pretty much quit altogether is surprising, but of course, completely understandable at his age and I guess all good things must come to an end eventually… we all know about Willie and weed, it’s a legendary combination like peanut butter and jelly, but we’ll always have the stories, though, and that’s what matters. And when asked what still makes him happy, after all he’s seen and done over the years, the red headed stranger gave a beautiful answer, saying it’s still music that gives him peace and brings people from backgrounds and beliefs of all kinds together: “I enjoy playing music, I enjoy seeing people get together and forget about everything except music. I think there’s a great positive exchange that takes place. We don’t care what political affiliation you’re with, what color you are, it doesn’t matter if you like music, come on.” Amen to that… long live Willie Nelson. Is the Dixie Chicks’ (now going by The Chicks) “Goodbye Earl” headed to Broadway? It appears so, after hit author Taylor Jenkins Reid teased that she’s working on turning the hit 1999 murder ballad into a jukebox musical. The author who wrote the novel for the hit TV adaptation Daisy Jones & The Six has many more exciting projects in the pipeline. During a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, where she was promoting her new book, Atmosphere, she touched on a project she’s working on outside of the novel sphere. “We’re taking the story of ‘Goodbye Earl’ and we’re making that jukebox musical with all the discography of the Chicks.” As a “Goodbye Earl” superfan, I jumped out of my desk chair hearing her say this in the interview. Reid shared that this idea is coming about with one of her theater friends. “One of my best friends in the whole world is a Broadway fanatic. She works in Broadway. And I was with her going to see Moulin Rouge a couple of years ago. And right before the curtain comes up, I say to her, ‘I have a crazy idea. What about ‘Goodbye Earl’ as a jukebox musical?’ And I pitch her the story in my head. And she goes, ‘Okay, what’s the second act?’ And I go, ‘I think I might need your help writing this.'” After they realized this “crazy idea” might not be so crazy after all, the two women “called everyone we could think of in Hollywood that might know the Chicks,” which got the ball officially rolling on this project. Reid also explained to Clarkson that instead of writing new music for the plot of “Goodbye Earl,” she and her friend are considering using The Chicks’ existing catalog for the music in the production. “I really hope ‘Cowboy Take Me Away’ makes the musical.” Clarkson said after learning this, to which Reid responded: “Let me assure you that it does.”  I can imagine it already. Mary Ann has “Cowboy Take Me Away” playing in her head after her first date with Earl, but little does she know the rocky road that lies ahead of her. While of course fans would hope that a lot of The Chicks’ older music would make the cut, I can already imagine songs from their latest record like “Gaslighter, “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” and tracks from their 2006 record like “Not Ready To Make Nice” featured in the project. Who knows, maybe we will even get some other ’90s country hits in the musical, given country music fans first met Earl in Sammy Kershaw’s hit “Queen of My Double Wide Trailer.” And yes, Taylor Jenkins Reid, I am available for hire if you need guidance. I have many ideas swirling in this big brain. Reid did not share any information on when “Goodbye Earl” enthusiasts could expect this musical to take the stage, even teasing that it better mean this is truly coming to fruition, or else some people might have the same fate as Earl for giving us false hope. (All in light fun with that statement, folks! No one is eating black-eyed peas around here!) I’m buying tickets as soon as more details from this project are unveiled.
