Henry and Max Winkler collaborated on the American Horror Stories series, where Max took on the role of director and, for the first time, had his father under his direction. During his appearance on the TODAY show, Henry said that all three of his children: Jed, Zoe, and Max—are technically his bosses, but getting paid by Max made it “official.”
He described Max as “very strict,” especially when he tried to deviate from the script. He also shared that one of the most touching moments from the shoot was when Henry was handed a cup of coffee labeled “Daddy Winkler.” He got so emotional, he briefly lost focus. Henry often speaks about how proud he is of Max’s determination, even recalling how his son helped him prepare for his first Emmy-winning role in HBO’s Barry. Max Winkler, who is now 41, has built an impressive career as a writer and director, a path he announced at the young age of 10.

Despite Henry’s character as The Fonz, Max, while discussing his childhood, once described his dad as a “nice, nerdy guy,” far from the motorcycle-riding character fans remember. But that “nerdy” nature has proven to be the part of the qualities that Max clearly admires. In another interview, Max called Henry one of his “best buddies.” The two remain close friends, and their relationship continues to impress fans and followers.
