When will blood oxygen monitoring finally return to the Apple Watch?

When will blood oxygen monitoring finally return to the Apple Watch?

At the end of 2023, Apple had to briefly stop selling Apple Watch Series 9 in the US due to a legal battle with Massimo. At the time, the US International Trade Commission ruled that Apple infringed two of Masimo’s blood oxygen patents. This decision was sent to Biden’s Administration for the Presidential Review Period, which expired on Christmas. With Biden deciding not to revoke the ITC’s decision, Apple had to stop selling the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. Then, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit paused the import ban, considering Apple’s request to continue selling the smartwatches during the appeal process. By mid-January, however, the court officially denied Apple’s request. As a result, Apple Watch models with blood oxygen features were once again banned as of January 18, 2024. Apple continued to sell its latest Apple Watch models, but pulse oximetry has been disabled in the US. Now, more than a year later, the company still hasn't announced when new Apple Watch models might get blood oxygen monitoring again. Is blood oxygen monitoring that important to Apple Watch? Introduced with the Apple Watch Series 6, the blood oxygen feature quickly became a key tool for users, especially during the pandemic. Unlike the FDA-approved ECG functionality, Apple always positioned the blood oxygen sensor as “good-to-know information,” emphasizing that it wasn’t intended to replace professional medical testing. Still, it remains an important metric for fitness enthusiasts. For example, in the Gentler Streak app, my blood oxygen data, combined with sleep tracking, helps generate a daily readiness score, letting me know whether my body is primed for a workout. Blood oxygen levels play a crucial role in shaping this analysis. However, a year after Apple was forced to disable this feature for new Apple Watch users, questions persist about when or even if it might return. In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple has decided not to pursue further legal action or reinstate the blood oxygen feature for now. "The company often touts itself as a health-care leader and tries to position its smartwatch as a medical lab on your wrist," he wrote. "But blood oxygen is an important metric for many people, and its omission from US devices is hard to ignore. Apple, the world’s most valuable company, has the money to settle the suit or rebuild the feature in a way that dances around Masimo’s patents. It has chosen, so far, to do neither. The situation doesn’t affect consumers who bought Apple Watches before the feature was banned, but that just means current customers might be less willing to upgrade." When can we realistically expect pulse oximetry to come back? If Apple prefers not to buy the patents or create new tech in the coming years, the company won't be able to start offering blood oxygen monitoring to Apple Watch users in the US before August 2028. So, unless Apple finds a way to develop a blood oxygen sensor that doesn’t infringe the patent in question, the functionality might not be back until the company unveils the Apple Watch Series 14. By that time, we hope Apple has already started to roll out several other health features, including long-rumored support for blood pressure readings. Air Fryer Pizza Bombs

Air Fryer Pizza Bombs

Air Fryer Pizza Bombs are quick little bites made with biscuits that are cheesy and packed with pizza flavor – ready in minutes! READY IN UNDER 15 MINUTES Made with refrigerated biscuit dough, mozzarella cheese, pizza sauce and pepperoni, these Air Fryer Pizza Bombs come together in just a few minutes. I love making these when I have friends over and want a fun snack that doesn’t take forever to make or when I want a simple dinner that I know everyone will love. They’re also perfect for game day snacks too! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:  What kind of Air Fryer did you use? All of my Air Fryer recipes are tested using a 6 quart Air Fryer basket since that is the most commonly owned Air Fryer. Depending on the style and size of your Air Fryer, the timing can vary. Any style or size should work, but the Pizza Bombs may need more or less time and you may need to work in batches. What kind of spray is best to use in the Air Fryer? It’s always recommended that either avocado oil spray or olive oil spray be used in an air fryer. This keeps it from gunking up over time. I think they even make a special spray for air fryers now.  Can I use homemade pizza dough instead? You bet. You could use Homemade Pizza Dough or store-bought. Depending on what you use in your homemade dough, you may need to adjust the cooking time. I haven’t personally tested it so you may have to play with the time a bit. Do I have to layer the cheese or can I just stuff it in? I added cheese in layers to the pizza bomb to ensure there was cheese evenly distributed throughout. Why such a varied cooking time? Air Fryers vary widely so you may need to experiment with the amount of cooking time. Start with 5 minutes and check for doneness and add more time as needed. Some Air Fryer types take a lot longer to bake through. Just keep cooking until it’s no longer doughy. Can I add other toppings? These pizza bombs are extremely versatile, and you can truly add any of your favorite pizza toppings to create your own personal pizza bomb! You may need to sauté or cook other toppings before adding them to the dough so they soften up enough. I think mushrooms, bell peppers, diced onion, sausage, ham, etc would all be good additions. How long are leftovers good for? Personally, I feel like these are the best the first day that you make them. But you can keep leftover Pizza Bombs if you want. Leftovers will keep if properly stored in an airtight container or zip top bag in the fridge for up to 3-4 days (or freeze for up to 3 months.) Reheat them in the Air Fryer or oven. INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE) Southern Homestyle Buttermilk Biscuits– you could swap these biscuits out for homemade pizza dough or some store bought dough, I shared more on this above in the FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) area. pizza sauce– use whatever canned pizza sauce you enjoy from the store or use some Homemade Pizza Sauce. mini pepperoni slices– if you can’t find mini pepperoni slices, you can use full size, regular pepperonis and cut them up into smaller pieces to stuff inside. mozzarella string cheese sticks– cut the string cheese into fourths, then sliced again vertically. Each cheese stick will be divided into 8 pieces. I used mozzarella sticks since it makes things easier, but you could use shredded cheese if that is what you prefer. unsalted butter– melted. Salted butter can be used. garlic powder Italian seasoning grated Parmesan HOW TO MAKE AIR FRYER PIZZA BOMBS: Remove the biscuits from the can and with a rolling pin, flatten a biscuit into a circle approximately the size of a large grapefruit. About 1/8” thick. Add one Tablespoon of pizza sauce to the center of the biscuit circle.  Add 2 pieces of cheese sticks to top of the pizza sauce. Then add 1 Tablespoon of mini pepperonis to the top of the cheese. Then add two more pieces of mozzarella sticks. Grab the edges of the circle and pinch to close. Try not to have a large amount of dough in the pinch as it’ll be harder to make sure it is cooked through without overcooking the rest of it. Continue this process with the remaining biscuits. Preheat your air fryer to 350F degrees. Generously grease the bottom of the basket with nonstick spray. Add the pizza bombs to the basket, seam side down, giving them plenty of space for airflow. You may need to do this in batches. Spray the pizza bombs with nonstick spray and cook for 6-8 minutes or until dark golden brown and cooked through on the bottom.  While cooking, add the butter, garlic powder, Italian seasoning and grated Parmesan cheese to a small bowl.  Melt in the microwave and stir to combine. Once the bombs are cooked through, remove them from the Air Fryer and brush with the melted garlic butter. Sprinkle with minced parsley and serve with additional pizza sauce!
