Loudermilk said he wants “to spend more dedicated time with my family,” while Amodei said it was “the right time for Nevada and myself to pass the torch.” The latest retirements mean 60 members of Congress have decided not to run for re-election this year — 51 House members and nine senators. It’s the most retirements from both chambers combined this century, according to historical data from the Brookings Institution’s Vital Statistics on Congress. That includes lawmakers who are retiring from political life altogether and those leaving their seats to run for other offices, but it doesn’t include members who have resigned or died during the current Congress. So far, 30 House Republicans are retiring, compared with 21 Democrats. The Senate is more evenly divided, with five Republicans and four Democrats retiring, as Democrats face an uphill battle to net the four seats they need for control. The Senate figure also doesn’t include a handful of members who are running for other offices but aren’t up for re-election this year, like Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., and Michael Bennet, D-Colo. Senator Mitch McConnell’s health appears to still be in decline. On Thursday, a reporter approached Senator Mitch McConnell at the Capitol and asked him, “Can you give us any information on why you blocked the SAVE Act?” McConnell, who was being pushed in a wheelchair by a staffer, declined to answer any questions. The reporter followed up on the question by asking McConnell for his thoughts on Rep. Tim Burchett’s claim that his office is being controlled by his staffers. McConnell, who leads the Senate Rules Committee, is refusing to schedule a vote on the legislation, thus preventing it from moving forward. The bill would create barriers for voting, requiring specific forms of ID in order for Americans to exercise their constitutional right. In blocking it, the retiring senator and former majority leader has drawn the ire of his colleagues. Representative Tim Burchett posted a video on X Friday saying McConnell’s actions are partially coming from a place of “meanness” because he doesn’t like Trump, and called his mental acuity into question. “He’s blocking the SAVE Act, or is he? Is it him or a staff member, because as you know, he’s a lot like Joe Biden was in his last few days in office, or last years in office,” Burchett said. “His cognizant level is diminishing daily.” Burchett went on a tangent about how much of Congress is run by staffers because certain aging members of Congress have diminishing mental capacity, citing the case of Representative Kay Granger, the former House Appropriations Committee chair who disappeared for months in 2024 and was later found to be living in an independent living facility. The conservative restraint exercised by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was put on full display recently. For the most part, the case I’m talking about was overshadowed by the more high-profile SCOTUS ruling against President Trump’s tariff power. Though I must say — Thomas came down hard against that majority ruling as well! But it was in a much less nationally dramatic case that Thomas proved just how valuable he is to the court. And also how hard it is to maintain a conservative, originalist view of jurisprudence with so much JUDICIAL ACTIVISM coming from the Supreme Court itself. The case in question revolved around a murder case in Texas, in which a long (overnight) recess was necessary. And the recess happened right in the middle of the defendant’s testimony on the witness stand. I want to dive into the particulars to show how carefully Justice Thomas works to WITHSTAND the potential of judicial overreach.  (Call it legislating from the bench!) Existing law was clear enough, yet the opinion pushed further anyway. This is exactly why President Trump has made restoring constitutional originalism a cornerstone of his agenda. Judges who stick to the text as written, not activist expansions, are what keep our republic strong and our freedoms secure. America wins when leaders like Trump demand nothing less. As that post highlighted, existing law was sufficient to handle the situation. There was no need for a new law, an expansion of judicial interpretation, or a “new rule” to be issued — which is exactly what happened… And that’s exactly what stirred up a fire in Thomas’ belly, because rather than rely on the existing law, precedent, and mechanisms in place, the majority decided to effectively CREATE A NEW RULE. “NEEDLESSLY”, according to Justice Clarence Thomas. And I think he was very right in that assessment. Here’s what happened in a nutshell, according to Fox News: Justice Clarence Thomas criticized the majority opinion in a Tuesday Supreme Court ruling that he says “needlessly” expanded court precedent on trial issues. Thomas made the argument in a concurring opinion to a unanimous decision the court released regarding the extent to which a trial judge can restrict interaction between a defendant and his attorneys during a trial recess. During the trial, Villareal’s testimony was interrupted by a 24-hour overnight recess, and the judge in the case instructed Villareal’s attorneys not to “manage his testimony” during the recess. The judge clarified, however, that the order was not a blanket restriction on Villareal’s communication with his attorneys. He said they could discuss topics other than the defendant’s testimony, such as possible sentencing issues. Villareal was ultimately convicted in the case, and his attorney’s appealed the decision by arguing the judge’s restrictions infringed on the defendant’s Sixth Amendment right to counsel. The case was ultimately appealed up to the Supreme Court, which ruled against the defendant’s argument. The court’s majority opinion, penned by Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, stated that court precedent allowed judges to restrict attorneys and their clients from discussing testimony in the middle of a trial. (Emphasis added.) Now, up to this point, Clarence Thomas essentially agreed with the majority. After all, it was a UNANIMOUS VOTE! He AGREED with the majority that the Judge in the case was correct when he instructed the murder defendant’s lawyers NOT to have any communications with him that would have constituted coaching or ‘managing’ his testimony. The reason being… he was effectively still in the MIDDLE of his testimony — during the recess. And therefore, according to EXISTING PRECEDENT and LAW, it would have been wholly improper for his lawyers to “help” him with his testimony on the stand while he’s actually giving it! The problem came in the form of EXCESIVE OVERREACH when Justice Jackson reasoned in the majority opinion that a CLARIFYING RULE needed to be put forward, to address the issue. But, it didn’t. There was precedent, existing law, and all the guidelines necessary to handle the situation. Which is what guided the judge in the murder trial to CORRECTLY handle the situation! But Jackson couldn’t help herself from reaching for more judicial authority. And Thomas couldn’t help HIMSELF — and thankfully pushed back against it, as covered in this overview from Courthousenews.com: Justice Clarence Thomas, a George H.W. Bush appointee, took issue with Jackson’s newly announced rule. “I cannot join the court’s opinion because it opines on hypothetical situations not before the court and needlessly expands our precedents,” Thomas wrote, concurring only in judgment. Justice Neil Gorsuch, a Donald Trump appointee, joined Thomas’ opinion. Thomas claimed that Jackson’s opinion “endorses a methodology under which any conflict between the Sixth Amendment and the desire for untutored testimony must be resolved in favor of the right to the assistance and guidance of counsel.” Thomas said the majority opinion wasn’t grounded in the original meaning of the Sixth Amendment. And he added that opining on matters not presented in Villarreal’s case wasn’t necessary to decide it. Jackson’s opinion was joined by every justice except Thomas and Gorsuch. She stated that the majority did not share Thomas’ view that the ruling “needlessly expands our precedents.” Here’s a screenshot of the cornerstone of Justice Thomas’ criticism of the majority opinion on the matter: And below is a portion of his own opinion, differentiating his vote from those he voted with in that he refused to accepted a “needless” increase in RULES and REGULATIONS and judicial OVERREACH. Check out the logic of Justice Thomas’ criticism of the majority opinion, as he explained it here: I cannot join the Court’s opinion because it opines on hypothetical situations not before the Court and needlessly expands our precedents. I therefore respectfully concur only in the judgment. While Villarreal was still on direct examination, the judge had to recess trial for the day due to a scheduling conflict. Ordinarily, a witness cannot consult with counsel during his testimony. The trial judge therefore instructed Villarreal’s counsel not to discuss Villarreal’s testimony overnight. But his order allowed Villarreal to confer with counsel about matters other than his ongoing testimony. The trial judge’s order here complied with our precedents. The trial judge instructed defense counsel not to “discuss what you couldn’t discuss with [Villarreal] if he was on the stand in front of the jury,” and explained that “you couldn’t confer with him while he was on the stand about his testimony.” I am unable to join the majority opinion because it unnecessarily expands these precedents. It purports to “announce” a “rule” under which a defendant has a constitutional right to “discussion of testimony” so long as that discussion is “incidental to other topics.” Ante, at 9, 11, 12, n. 5. It identifies new circumstances, not presented here, in which a defendant supposedly has a right to discuss matters related to his ongoing testimony. Did you catch that part about a new “constitutional right”? Justice Jackson doesn’t seem to have a problem creating those sorts of things out of thin air. Thankfully, there are at least TWO judges who still recognize that’s a problem: Thomas, and Gorsuch! Many will call this hair-splitting.  Semantics. But just remember… it’s in the shadow grey-areas and the ability to weasel in new meanings for words that the principles of straightforward rule of law gets eroded. And it’s in sharp-eyed Constitutionalists like Justice Clarence Thomas that such subtle attacks on our justice system get BEATEN BACK.

As you probably heard, it didn’t take long for Hillary Clinton’s Congressional testimony about Jeffrey Epstein to hit a snag. Of course, her lawyers threw a tantrum, immediately shutting things down. The fuss started when a photo of Hillary showed up on social media barely an hour into the proceedings. And Hillary was obviously not having a good day, judging by her expression. But the REAL fireworks came later, as I teased in the headline. The image itself wasn’t anything incredibly shocking — we’ve all seen Hillary Clinton’s sour face a thousand times before.  (Full body shiver…) But the fact that popular conservative X podcaster Benny Johnson was the ‘source’ of the image from inside the CLOSED-DOOR testimony didn’t go over well with everyone. Mostly… it didn’t go over well with Democrats. Here’s the photo at the center of the controversy, shared by Johnson. Along with the proper accrediting of Rep. Boebert’s official “I did not kill myself” statements. Considering the Clinton track record, I don’t blame either of them for reiterating their current mental state: And I did not hang myself in my hotel room later tonight. — Lauren Boebert (@laurenboebert) February 26, 2026 But possibly the most controversial quote of the day didn’t come from Clinton — even though she swore (under oath) that she never even met Epstein. (???) Who knows where that statement might lead, as the investigation continues? But let’s be honest.  We all expected that answer. Rep. Lauren Boebert, on the other hand, didn’t try to put up a denial… She didn’t attempt to morally justify her actions of leaking the photo of Clinton… And she didn’t REALLY even try to give an “excuse” for doing so. And then she took a tongue-in-cheek swipe at the haters, commenting that “no Ambassadors” came to any harm as a result of sharing the photo, as reported by Newsweek: Representative Lauren Boebert took to social media Thursday afternoon to defend a photo she took of the closed-door deposition of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and sent to podcaster Benny Johnson. Boebert, a Colorado Republican, told reporters outside the House Oversight Committee hearing that she was not reprimanded for the photos she took, before posting on X that Johnson had done nothing wrong by sharing the image. “No U.S. Ambassadors were harmed in the taking of today’s photo,” she said in another post, appearing to seek to poke fun at the outrage over the image, which led to a pause in proceedings. The closed-door depositions in Chappaqua, New York, the hometown of Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, come after months of tense back-and-forth between the high-powered Democratic couple and the Republican-controlled House Oversight Committee. It will be the first time that a former president has been forced to testify before Congress. Hillary Clinton was testifying in a House investigation into Epstein, who visited Bill Clinton at the White House multiple times in the 1990s, according to visitor logs. After he left office, the former president flew multiple times on Epstein’s private jet. Hillary Clinton told lawmakers that she does not recall ever encountering Jeffrey Epstein in a closed-door deposition to the House Oversight Committee on Thursday. (Emphasis added.) As you would expect, Democrats were livid. But as others began pointing out on social media, if Rep. Lauren Boebert wound up in trouble for taking and leaking that photo… What should happen to Rep. And yet, somehow, Democrats have lost their mind over Rep. Boebert’s “leak” of a photo of Clinton… From a hearing that is SET TO BE RELEASED PUBLICLY, anyway? Yeah — get over it. But true to form, the Democrats had Clinton’s back — as has been reported by The Hill: Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee tore into Republicans on the panel after Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) leaked a photo from inside former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s deposition on Thursday. Ranking member Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) said Clinton, who said she did not recall ever meeting Epstein, was “completely cooperating with the deposition and the committee” and “answering questions in full faith and in good faith.” “What is not acceptable is Oversight Republicans breaking their own committee rules that they established with the Secretary and her team,” Garcia said in statements to the press during a break in the deposition. “It was gracious of the Secretary and her team to continue the deposition.” “We are sitting through an incredibly unserious clown show of a deposition where members of Congress and the Republican Party are more concerned about getting their photo op of Secretary Clinton than actually getting to the truth and holding anyone accountable,” Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.) said. Asked about the photo when returning to the deposition after a break, Boebert made a reference to the FBI’s investigation into a private email server Clinton used while secretary of State, which dominated the final stretch of her 2016 presidential campaign. “I just returned to my hotel room and installed the BleachBit software … So, I guess in regards to taking photos, I do not recall,” Boebert quipped. (Emphasis added.) If you noticed the section I highlighted in bold text from that article, you might wonder what “BleachBit software” is. Then again, knowing our readers… You’ll probably get that not-so-subtle dig at Hillary right off the bat. BleachBit was reportedly the software used to wipe Hillary’s emails from her “secret” server, apparently in an attempt to cover up communications related to the 2012 Benghazi attack. Well played, Boebert — well played, indeed. Meanwhile, the Democrats are still more upset with a soon-to-be-released image of Hillary getting out into the public space early… Than they are about the growing evidence that the Clinton’s were intimately involved with Jeffrey Epstein.
