Stephen Wilson Jr. Shines Light On Fixers Of The World With Stellar New Single, “Gary”
Nothing like waking up to an artist beginning their new chapter of music on CMA Awards day.
Today, November 19, Stephen Wilson Jr., and CMA New Artist of the Year nominee, released his highly anticipated single “Gary” via Big Loud Records.
While I know many of us are pulling for him to receive this honor, we fans are also hoping for new music to be released soon, which he has promised to deliver. During the recent Whiskey Moon festival hosted by Whiskey Myers, Wilson Jr. hit the stage in Florida and delivered a killer performance of the unreleased fan favorite, sharing with fans that it would be dropping soon.
“Where I come from, if you’re named Gary, you just know how to fix things. If you need something to fix, if s*** hits the fan, you call Gary. Gary gets it done. I didn’t make the rules; I follow them — and I call Gary.
But this song showed up at this epiphany that there ain’t a lot of boys named Gary these days. This song is going to be coming out very soon, and it’s called, uh, ‘Gary.’”
“Gary” marks the chapter of new music coming from the former boxer and Microbiologist, following his massively successful 2023 debut double album Søn of Dad. Since Søn of Dad, Wilson Jr. has not released another LP, but has kept fans interested with the Blankets EP, which features covers of songs that shaped his early love for music.
This year, he’s also put out two singles, which have appeared on TV series: “Dig A Hole” on the Netflix series The Waterfront and a collaboration with Shaboozey, “Took A Walk,” recorded for the film The Long Walk. Wilson Jr.’s most recent single, “If There’s A Heaven,” was a stunning duet featuring Noah Cyrus, and while that has satisfied some need for new music, “Gary” marks the official start of his next chapter in his career.
Just as Wilson described in Florida, “Gary” is a tune about the good ole boys in everyone’s hometown that know how to fix everything, have stories for days, and are all around treasured blue-collared boys.
“Gary: Garis mechanicus
Our Garys are going extinct, I fear. Much like the polar glare. I believe we need to save them. It’s gonna be a Gary scary world without them. Where I come from, the Garys get it done & when your septic tank blows, I do not believe AI will show, but I believe a guy will… And there’s a good chance his name’s gonna be: Gary”

Lyrically, the song does touch on this generation of fixers; they also dive deeper than that and highlight the narrator of “Gary” feeling like the world is moving away from traditions that kept us all grounded, like attending church and praying before supper. The song’s acoustic melody darkens as it continues, reflecting Gary’s internal struggles with the ways of the world, before tragically ending.
“Every now and then, gets the damn thing running
Takes it out for a spin, first week in May
He believes in God, but believes in little
Black-eyed peas on the stove on New Year’s Day
I had a weird suspicion with the light out on the front porch
Heart medication poured down where the drain pours
He holds his left arm while his parakeet prays
Has anybody seen much of Gary these days?
Has anybody seen much of Gary these days?”
The Garys of the world are a dying breed, and we can all listen to this tale of “Gary” as a cautionary tale. Hard work, loyalty, and believing in a higher power can take you far in this life, and even if that’s not your cup of tea, you have to appreciate and value those who live by that set of rules.
Stephen Wilson Jr. does not miss, and this is a phenomenal start to his next chapter of music.
Turn it all the way up.
