Rubio: The US “is going to wage war on narco-terrorist organizations

We are at war with the cartels who are killing a hundred thousand of our people, mostly young people, every year. Every president has ignored them, and now they are trained by Middle East terrorist organizations, have military equipment, including drones. They must be defeated before they become unbeatable. Donate link: https://www.optimistdaily.com/donate-to-support-the-optimist-daily/?gift=Y%20http:// Transcript: Theme music Arielle: Hello Optimists! It’s Arielle of The Optimist Daily Weekly Round-up! Our regular listeners know that usually, Karissa and I get together to talk about our favorite solutions of the week, but today I’m interrupting our regular programming to spotlight something really special we’re rolling out again this year. It’s the return of our Local Changemakers Series! Last year, we asked our Optimist community to nominate the people and projects sparking real change in their communities—and you did not disappoint. The stories we received were powerful reminders that optimism takes root close to home. For example, in Olympia, Washington, a nonprofit called GRuB—Garden Raised Bounty— is transforming food and farming into tools for healing and connection. From youth programs to veteran beekeepers, they’re proving that a garden can be more than soil and seeds—it can grow resilience, community, and hope. We also celebrated Third Act, a movement of older Americans, founded by Bill McKibben, who are channeling their wisdom and resources into climate action and protecting democracy. With campaigns targeting big banks that fund fossil fuels and efforts to safeguard voting rights, they’re showing the world that activism doesn’t have an age limit. And across the globe in Chonburi, Thailand, we highlighted The Man That Rescues Dogs. It all started out with just one guy, Michael Baines, feeding a few strays near his restaurant. Now, it has grown into a sanctuary for more than a thousand dogs. With everything from vet care to wheelchairs for disabled puppies, it’s a story of compassion in action—and proof that one person really can change an entire community. Those are just a few of the incredible changemakers we were honored to spotlight last year, and now it’s your turn. We want to know about the difference-makers where you live. Who’s organizing cleanups? Who’s creating safe spaces? Who is inspiring you to believe in a better tomorrow? And here’s a little bonus—every nomination you send in enters you into a raffle to win a cozy Optimist Daily mug in our signature red.  Nominations are open now through September 26th, and the selected changemakers will be featured in their very own article published in the run-up to Thanksgiving. This is your chance to shine a light on the good happening in your corner of the world! So take a moment, think of that person, group, or initiative that makes you proud to be part of your community, and send in your nomination. The link is in the show notes! Let’s keep proving, together, that we’re never powerless in creating a better future. Speaking of which, the amazing solutions featured on the Optimist Daily this week include: Could space-based solar panels power Europe’s clean energy future? How to eat late at night without ruining your sleep 5 warm, creative ways to spark better conversations with your kids How a beneficial bacteria could help save Florida’s coral from devastating disease Spacey September: 10 dazzling night sky events you won’t want to miss Cross-border conservation: Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize unite to protect Great Mayan Jungle Japan’s first osmotic power plant shows how salt and fresh water can fuel renewable energy How to revive your work mojo after a vacation That’s all for today! Karissa and I will be back next week with more solutions, but for now I wish you all a wonderful weekend.  Bye!The post Podcast Transcript September 5, 2025— Celebrating Local Changemakers: Nominate Your Community Heroes of 2025 first appeared on The Optimist Daily: Making Solutions the News.

Trump Reveals a Key Component He Wants in Forthcoming Anti-Crime Bill

President Donald Trump on Friday revealed one key measure he wants Republicans to include in an upcoming crime bill. Trump said in response to a question from The Daily Signal that the crime bill must end cashless bail. “When that came out … originally, when that came out the first time, that’s when you saw the real big crime start to happen. Cashless bail. What a disaster that is,” he said. “You murder somebody, you don’t have to put up bail, and you go out in the street, and you murder somebody else.” TRUMP: Cashless Bail Is Killing People. It Needs to Go.The Daily Signal’s White House Correspondent @TheElizMitchell asked President Donald Trump what policies he would like to see included in a potential crime bill?“Cashless bail. What a disaster that is. You murder… pic.twitter.com/UBMmZTFOF2— The Daily Signal (@DailySignal) September 5, 2025 In a post on Truth Social last week, Trump said he was working with congressional Republicans on comprehensive new legislation to combat crime. “[House] Speaker Mike Johnson and [Senate Majority] Leader John Thune are working with me and other Republicans on a Comprehensive Crime Bill. It’s what our Country needs, and NOW! More to follow,” Trump wrote. Over the summer congressional recess, DOJ officials spoke with a small group of Republican staffers about assembling a crime package, Politico reported. Due to the Trump administration’s crime crackdown in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., has gone from “one of the most dangerous cities in our country to what they call a safe city,” Trump said. Trump told The Daily Signal he is going to dinner in Washington, D.C., this week as a result of the reduction in crime. “I wouldn’t have done that,” he said. “To be honest, I would’ve had an obligation not to do it before I came into office, or even at the very beginning when things were so corrupt and so dangerous out on the streets.” In response to a question from The Daily Signal, the president criticized D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb for suing him for deploying the National Guard to Washington. “But how about this: We just set a record on low crime in Washington, D.C., and we have a man suing us to let us go back to high crime,” Trump said. I asked @POTUS to respond to the DC AG suing him for his crime crack down. "How about this: We just set a record on low crime in Washington, D.C. and we have a man suing us to let us go back to high crime?" "We're gonna have to be here for a little while to make this really… pic.twitter.com/qC1OTZ2Tus— Elizabeth Troutman Mitchell (@TheElizMitchell) September 5, 2025 Trump’s 30-day federalization of the D.C. police is set to end Sept. 10. He said he will need more time to make his changes to the city last. “We’re going to have to be here for a little while to make this really work long term after we’re gone,” he said to The Daily Signal. “And so we’re going to meet that head on, and I suspect we’ll be very successful. He said he can “always declare a national emergency” if Congress won’t act to extend his control over the police “because this was a national emergency.” “But, right now, we have the safest city,” he said. “We have, now, one of the safe cities in the country. We had almost the worst, I mean, a city that was as bad as some of the horror shows that you’ve heard about for years.” The post Trump Reveals a Key Component He Wants in Forthcoming Anti-Crime Bill appeared first on The Daily Signal.

How Do Dog Sleeping Habits Change Over Time?

At DogingtonPost, we’ve observed that dog sleeping habits change significantly throughout their lives. From energetic puppies to serene seniors, our canine companions experience distinct shifts in their sleep patterns and needs. Understanding these changes is key to ensuring your dog’s health and happiness at every stage of life. How Much Do Puppies Sleep? The Sleep Needs of Growing Puppies Puppies are adorable bundles of energy, but they also need a lot of sleep. Newborn puppies sleep almost constantly, waking only to nurse. As they grow, their sleep patterns evolve. A study found that dogs older than 1.5 years of age sleep between 60 and 80% of the night. This includes both daytime and nighttime sleep. At around 16 months, they learn to sleep throughout the night. Establishing a Sleep Routine Creating a consistent sleep routine is essential for puppies. Set up a comfortable sleeping area, such as a crate or a cozy bed in a quiet corner. Nighttime Interruptions Puppies often need to relieve themselves during the night. Until about 12 weeks of age, expect to take your puppy out every 2-4 hours. After this, many puppies can sleep for 6-8 hours without a bathroom break, but this varies by individual. Signs of Healthy Puppy Sleep A sleeping puppy may twitch, make small noises, or even appear to be running in their sleep. These are normal signs of REM sleep and shouldn’t worry you. Transitioning to Adult Sleep Patterns As puppies grow, their sleep patterns start to resemble those of adult dogs. The transition is gradual and varies for each puppy. Some may settle into a more adult-like sleep pattern around 6-12 months of age, while others might take longer. This transition period sets the stage for the sleep habits your dog will likely maintain throughout adulthood. How Much Do Adult Dogs Sleep? Sleep Duration for Adult Dogs Adult dogs sleep on average 10.1 hours daily. This sleep occurs in multiple naps throughout the day and night. The sleep pattern differs significantly from puppies, who require up to 20 hours of sleep per day. Breed and Size Influence on Sleep A dog’s breed and size greatly affect its sleep habits. Larger breeds often sleep more than smaller breeds. For example, many St. Bernard owners report that their oversized pets actually spend more time asleep than they do awake. Working breeds (such as Border Collies or German Shepherds) might sleep less due to their high energy levels and need for mental stimulation. Factors Affecting Sleep Quality Several elements impact the quality of an adult dog’s sleep: Environmental conditions: Dogs sleep best in cool, quiet environments. Exercise: Regular physical activity improves sleep quality and duration. Diet: Proper nutrition supports healthy sleep patterns. Stress levels: Anxiety or discomfort can disrupt sleep. A study in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior found that dogs who received adequate daily exercise showed improved sleep quality and duration. Signs of Healthy Sleep in Adult Dogs Healthy sleep in adult dogs includes: Regular breathing Occasional twitching Periods of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep During REM sleep, you might observe your dog’s paws moving as if they’re running or their eyes darting back and forth under closed lids. These behaviors indicate normal dreaming and shouldn’t cause concern. When to Consult a Veterinarian If you notice significant changes in your dog’s sleep patterns (such as excessive daytime sleepiness or difficulty settling at night), consult your veterinarian. These changes could signal underlying health issues that require attention. As dogs transition from adulthood to their senior years, their sleep needs and patterns continue to evolve. Let’s explore how sleep changes in older dogs and what you can do to ensure they get the rest they need. How Do Senior Dogs’ Sleep Patterns Change? Increased Sleep Duration in Older Dogs Studies have reported that dogs older than 1.5 years of age sleep between 60 and 80% of the night, which is a significant increase from the sleep patterns of younger dogs. This change occurs due to decreased energy levels and slower metabolism. Common Sleep Disorders in Senior Dogs Older dogs face a higher risk of sleep disorders. Dogs with more advanced dementia suffer more sleep disruptions and sleep less overall than dogs with normal cognitive function. Dogs with CCD may become restless at night, often pacing or vocalizing. Sleep apnea, particularly common in brachycephalic breeds (like Bulldogs), can also worsen with age. Irregular breathing patterns or excessive snoring warrant a veterinary consultation. Impact of Age-Related Health Issues on Sleep Arthritis and joint pain significantly affect a senior dog’s sleep quality. These conditions make it hard for dogs to find comfortable sleeping positions, causing frequent waking. Incontinence, another common issue in older dogs, may cause them to wake up more often to urinate. Regular vet check-ups help manage these age-related issues and improve sleep quality. Adjusting Environment for Better Senior Dog Sleep Creating an optimal sleep environment is important for senior dogs. Orthopedic beds provide extra support for arthritic joints. The bed should be placed in a quiet, draft-free area to minimize disturbances. For dogs with incontinence, waterproof bed covers prove helpful. A consistent room temperature should be maintained, as older dogs show more sensitivity to temperature changes. Night lights help dogs with vision problems navigate safely at night. Some senior dogs benefit from calming aids (such as pheromone diffusers or soft background music) to promote relaxation. Regular, gentle exercise during the day can tire out your senior dog naturally, leading to better sleep at night. However, vigorous activity close to bedtime should be avoided, as it may cause overstimulation. Final Thoughts Dog sleeping habits change throughout their lives, from puppies to seniors. These changes reflect their evolving needs and health status. Owners should monitor their dog’s sleep patterns and consult a veterinarian if they notice significant alterations. Good sleep hygiene benefits dogs of all ages. Establish a consistent bedtime routine and provide a comfortable sleeping area. Exercise during the day can improve sleep quality, but avoid vigorous activity close to bedtime. We at DogingtonPost strive to help you understand your dog’s needs at every life stage. Our goal is to ensure your furry friend gets the rest they need for a happy, healthy life (including proper sleep habits).
