Project Astra is Google’s first true AI assistant

Move over Google Assistant; Google has a brand new personal AI assistant that it's much cooler and more useful than anything it did before. It's called Project Astra, and it's powered by Google's Gemini AI. Project Astra is an agent-type AI product that uses Gemini's multimodality to answer real-time questions about the world around you. It sounds a lot like OpenAI's new GPT-4o upgrade that ChatGPT just got. That's because it is. But Project Astra has at least one exciting advantage over ChatGPT that was obvious from the first demo we saw at Google I/O 2024. Continue reading... New Gemini AI features Google is adding to Gmail, Photos, and more

During Google's I/O 2024 conference, the tech giant announced several new Gemini AI features coming to Gmail, Search, Shopping, and more. Here they are. To begin the conference, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the new Gemini 1.5 Pro now has a 2 million token context window, which is the amount of information the AI model can understand. With the previous version, it had 1 million tokens. Now, Google wants to deepen into two main features: Multimodality and long context, so it can understand more complex queries and help users with their everyday tasks, such as: Image source: Google Google Photos: You can Ask Photos with Gemini. So, the AI could help you find your car's license plate and even show how your daughter improved with swimming classes over the years. Gmail: Gemini can help you catch up with e-mails from your kid's school, such as upcoming events, what's going on with your child, and more. https://x.com/Google/status/1790430549649019123 Shopping: Gemini can help you return products you buy. You can show a photo of your Converse, and the assistant will find the invoice on your Gmail, contact the store and organize with UPS so you can return the shoes. Search: Google Search's AI-generate summaries, which are now named AI Overviews, are launching to everyone in the US this week. https://x.com/Google/status/1790440001156583712 Search Videos: Gemini breaks down video frame by frame so Search can identify your issue, and use the web to find relevant information. Summarize e-mails: Google is adding a new Summarize option to long thread emails so you can offer context and summarize a subject you're talking about with other people. https://x.com/Google/status/1790441491338264973 Google says these features are launching in the coming weeks, with even more to come. Google debuts three new generative AI models for media creation during Google I/O

Google debuted its three newest generative AI models for media creation, Imagen3, Music AI Sandbox, and Veo, during Google I/O 2024. The tech giant says that the three newest AI tools are its best yet, offering even higher quality offerings compared to previous models. This is especially true for its new image creation tool, which Google claims can now understand the prompts that humans write even more clearly. https://twitter.com/GoogleDeepMind/status/1790434750592643331 This allows Imagen3 to create images that take everything about the prompt into account, including the smallest details. The generative AI model can also now create text more reliably than previous models like Imagen2, which launched in Google's chatbot back when it was still called Bard, and Google even claims that it works better than other image generation models out there. On the audio side, Google has been working with real life producers and musicians like Marc Rebillet to create a system that works for the artist, giving them the tools they need to succeed right in the Music AI Sandbox. https://twitter.com/GoogleDeepMind/status/1790435413682975043 According to the video, you can simply throw in a prompt, add in your own music if you want, and see what the AI does to customize it. But Music AI Sandbox and Imagen3 aren't the only generative AI that Google has been working on for media creation. The tech giant has also created a new video generation model called Veo, which Google says can really focus in on the smallest details, providing a great tool for video artists to utilize. https://twitter.com/Google/status/1790435689495945479 Google showed off some of the capabilities that Veo has, showing how it can build cinematic shots with just a few keywords in your prompt. The video quality is honestly astounding based on what we've seen so far, and it could open a lot of new doors for creators. All of these new tools will be available to developers as part of Google Labs, and the waitlist is now open for those who want to sign up. Google hasn't shared any wider plans to release of the new tools just yet. Hopefully, we'll learn more about their individual capabilities in the coming months. Google just beefed up Search with a ton of new AI features

Starting today, Google Search is going to feel a lot less like the search engine that you currently know and use, and more like the kinds of AI-centric platforms that are exploding around the web. Google Search head Liz Reid announced today that tons of new AI features are coming to Google's lucrative search engine, including AI Overviews -- Google-produced summarize of your search queries, de-emphasizing the classic list of blue links. These AI Overviews are rolling out in the US starting today, and coming to more than 1 billion people by year's end. What this means, specifically, is that Google will start automatically answering certain search queries in the US for everyone in the US. This process will begin over the coming days.  https://twitter.com/Google/status/1790438383128342722 Google describes this as Search "doing the Googling for you." At the same time, this is the beginning of a nightmare scenario for publishers, which will find their own links that Google Search surfaces pushed farther down the results page. If Google answers a query automatically, in other words, there would presumably be no need to scroll down the page and click a publisher's link. This has come as Google Search's ongoing updates have proven increasingly devastating for publishers, while rewarding sites that don't need the help from Google but get it anyway (Reddit, Quora, and Forbes). Don't Miss: Google is wading into EU politics, when it ought to focus on fixing its decaying search engine The post Google just beefed up Search with a ton of new AI features appeared first on BGR.
