MRC's Brent Bozell: ABC Debate Moderators Could Be Fair, But They Probably Won't

On Debate Day, MRC founder and president L. Brent Bozell appeared on the Fox Business program Varney & Co. to discuss our latest research into ABC News coverage of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. On moderator David Muir's newscast World News Tonight, MRC's Rich Noyes found Harris drew 100 percent positive coverage (not including soundbites of partisans) and Trump's coverage was 93 percent negative (by the same measure).  Fox host Stuart Varney said, "That doesn't sound like it’s going to be a fair debate. What do you say?"   BOZELL: This is ABC, not necessarily David Muir. This is ABC, the network -- and 93% negative on Donald Trump 100% positive to Kamala Harris. Why the Trump campaign agreed to do this debate on ABC, I simply don't understand. Because It's the worst, it’s the absolute worst network. The question is can David Muir be fair, tough, and even-handed in the debate? I’ll give you an example of how easy it is to do it. Everyone is focused on immigration right now. If I were David Muir, I would turn to Donald Trump and say, “President Trump, you have advocated returning illegals back to Mexico. Explain yourself.” And when he did, turn to Kamala Harris and say “Vice President Harris, what's your response to that?”. Then turn to Vice President Harris and say “You've advocated de-criminalizing people crossing the border illegally, explain yourself.” Then turn to Donald Trump and say “President Trump, respond.” Now this is just very simple and that would be a fantastic debate if they were to do it that way. Unfortunately, if past is prologue, it’s not going to happen. Then Varney posited: “You can skew the debate by the issues you choose. I'd expect ABC tonight to skew heavily in favor of abortion. Several abortion questions because they think that's a strong suit of Kamala Harris and skew the debate like that.” Bozell responded that abortion is not an issue that most Americans care about (or prioritize), compared to other radical stands Harris has taken we found in our MRC poll of Biden voters, both Democrats and independents: BOZELL: If you want to address what the American people, what the voters care about – if you were looking at issues where the American people don't have a clear understanding, especially Democrats – 71 percent don’t know she supports the defunding of police, 73% don't know she endorsed the Green New Deal, 81% don't know she wanted to eliminate private health insurance. It goes down the list,  issue by issue by issue. She's a radical liberal. Now, if that were established and the Democrats and American people were to say, good, because we are too. She wins the presidency and that's democracy. Or the American people might be shocked by her radicalism. That’s the role of a debater – moderator, to bring that out of the candidates, let them know exactly where they stand.

New study uncovers 'gravity-defying' contrast between Harris, Trump coverage by network hosting presidential debate

New study uncovers 'gravity-defying' contrast between Harris, Trump coverage by network hosting presidential debate

Vice President Kamala Harris may already have an edge in Tuesday's presidential debate. A new study conducted by the Media Research Center found that ABC's flagship primetime news show, "World News Tonight," has not been critical of Harris since she entered the presidential race in July. 'That computes to a gravity-defying 100% positive spin score for the vice president.' Specifically, MRC analysts studied every campaign story that aired on "World News Tonight" from July 21, the day Harris entered the race, to Sept. 6. They found that every statement made about Harris and her campaign from ABC anchors, reporters, voters, and other nonpartisan sources were "clearly positive." Every. Single. One. "That computes to a gravity-defying 100% positive spin score for the vice president," the MRC reported. On the other hand, the network has been extremely critical of Donald Trump. ABC anchor David Muir (Heidi Gutman/ABC via Getty Images) The study found that over the same time period, ABC's "World News Tonight" aired only five "clearly positive" comments about Trump, compared to 66 negative comments. That means while 100% of the comments about Harris were positive, a whopping 93% of comments about Trump were negative. More from the MRC:Our measure of good press/bad press omits partisan comments, as well as 'horse race' assessments about the candidates’ poll standings and prospects. So while viewers of ABC’s World News Tonight certainly heard negative comments about Harris during these past six-and-a-half weeks, all of them were from Trump, his campaign team, or other Republicans — never from reporters or nonpartisan sources. At the same time, while our spin score similarly excludes all Democratic soundbites about the Republican nominee, ABC’s reporters and anchors either jumped in to criticize Trump themselves, or broadcast negative comments from non-partisan sources to impart a heavily negative spin to the former President’s coverage. But what about NBC and CBS? Analysts found that while each network's coverage of Trump was overwhelmingly negative (77% at CBS and 86% at NBC), both networks are more willing to criticize Harris. For example, while ABC, according to the MRC, hasn't described Harris as a "liberal" — Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) believes Harris remains an ideological progressive — both NBC's "Nightly News" and CBS' "Evening News" have correctly described Harris as liberal and progressive. Each network show, moreover, has aired interviews with voters critical of Harris, something ABC's primetime newscast has not done. Additionally, the analysis found that CBS and NBC are willing to broadcast controversies involving Harris, while ABC is not. But of course, ABC criticizes Trump and his perceived controversies. The analysis is significant — and telling — because not only is ABC News hosting the debate between Trump and Harris, but "World News Tonight" anchor David Muir is one of the debate moderators. The debate is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. ET, taking place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Like the debate between Trump and President Joe Biden in June, there will be no live audience at this debate. Each candidate is also prohibited from using pre-written notes — though they can use a pen and notepad during the debate — and candidates cannot confer with advisers during commercials. The biggest holdup regarding debate rules came from Harris, who wanted unmuted microphones. At the previous debate, each candidate's mic was muted when it was not his turn to speak. Harris' campaign believes Harris will be "fundamentally disadvantaged" with muted microphones. It is believed that Harris sought unmuted microphones because she wants to recreate a moment from her vice presidential debate with Mike Pence in 2020, when she chastised him for interrupting her.Currently, there is not an agreement for an additional debate, although Trump has pledged to debate Harris three times.Like Blaze News? Tren de Aragua takeovers appear to expand to Texas hotel — police receive nearly 700 calls

The violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua has expanded its presence to a downtown El Paso, Texas, hotel, according to local reports. The El Paso County Attorney's Office recently filed a temporary injunction and restraining order against the Gateway Hotel, a condemned lodging establishment. The county has claimed that the unlawful occupancy at the property is a public nuisance, KVIA reported. 'Men holding knives and another man with a hatchet assaulting people.'The hotel was condemned in 2015 and picked up by a new owner, who applied for a temporary occupancy permit in 2018. However, that permit expired that year, and the owner did not apply for another one, according to KVIA. Additionally, an August fire code inspection found 20 violations and noted that the "building has no current certificate of occupancy." Despite that, police have reportedly received nearly 700 calls about illegal activity and code violations at the hotel since 2022.The county's legal filing claimed that individuals, including TDA gang members, have taken up unlawful residence at the property. Images taken from a surveillance video showed people armed with knives and fighting in the hall of the hotel. According to the county attorney, other images showed "people partying, drinking, smoking and dancing provocatively while children are present ... at least one gun being shot ... men holding knives and another man with a hatchet assaulting people and causing damage to the hotel in front of a security guard."The county attorney called the video footage evidence of the building's "deplorable state."The nearly 700 calls to local authorities detailed illegal activity, including drug use, theft, sexual assaults, stabbings, and an unattended death."There should be concern due to the establishment and rise of the Venezuelan criminal organization 'Tren de Aragua' at the Gateway Hotel. We discovered several Venezuelans have the tattoo identifiers of Tren de Aragua," an El Paso police officer warned.Local news outlets out of Aurora, Colorado, documented similar instances of TDA members taking over apartments, Blaze News previously reported. Last month, KDVR shared a video of five armed men storming through a complex and another video of a man using a hammer to destroy a deadbolt lock on an apartment door in the same building. Former residents explained that TDA took over the property shortly after illegal immigrants started to move in. The owner of one of those apartments has recently agreed to sell or lease the property to settle a city lawsuit.Like Blaze News? 'Get out of the car!' Miami Dolphin's Tyreek Hill considering legal action after release of intense police bodycam footage

NFL wide receiver Tyreek Hill is considering legal action after bodycam footage revealed his interactions with police before the NFL season opener.Hill was detained by police during a traffic stop before the Miami Dolphins game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which his Dolphins won 20-17. After the game, Hill told reporters at a press conference that he was cooperative with police and wasn't sure why he was placed on the ground in handcuffs."I wasn't disrespectful because my mom didn't raise me that way, didn't cuss, didn’t do none of that," he explained. The following day, shocking bodycam footage from the Miami-Dade Police Department was released showing exactly how the incident played out.'Keep your window down or I'm going to get you out of the car.'The footage showed Hill, stopped in his black McLaren with heavy tints, as police were asking why he didn't have his seatbelt on. At the same time, Hill was saying "don't knock on my window like that" to the officer.Hill handed his identification to the police officer and told him to give him his ticket. Hill then rolled his window back up. After an officer demanded the window go down, Hill lowered it about 25%. "Keep your window down or I'm going to get you out of the car," the officer said, with a thick accent. "As a matter of fact, get out of the car," the officer then immediately added. After threatening to break the car window, officers took approximately nine seconds to pull Hill from the car. He was then placed on the ground and put in handcuffs. Then, after standing the football player up, officers forced him down again after deeming he was not cooperative. Hill said on the video that he recently had knee surgery and that was the reason he was trying to lower himself slowly.During a subsequent interview with CNN, Hill told the network he was "still shell-shocked" from the incident and remarked that if he weren't "Tyreek Hill" then he may have been shot by police in a worst-case scenario.Host Kaitlan Collins read a statement by the president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, who described the incident from their point of view. The statement said that Hill was "not immediately cooperative with the officers on scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs."The statement continued, "Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground.""Once the situation was sorted out within a few minutes, Mr. Hill was issued two traffic citations and was free to leave," the statement concluded. — (@) In an interview with NBC Nightly News, Hill was asked whether he disputes the police union’s allegations that he was not cooperating.Hill noted that "everybody has their own sides, their own version" and agreed with the idea that the police union should defend its members. "You've got to have your teammates' back," Hill said. The athlete went on, "I feel like at the end of the day, if you roll up on somebody all hostile, knocking on their window and they already got their ID, you know what I'm saying, ready for you. It's not like I said, 'You're not getting my ID, you're not getting my ID,'" Hill explained. "You know, it was one of those situations where I was like, 'Here you go, my ID sir.' And I let back up my window. He said, 'Let it down.' I let it down. That's when it went from zero to 10. Other officers came in, just pulled me out."As a result, Hill has hired legal representation, who stated they are "exploring all legal remedies."Per OutKick, the legal team stated that while Hill is appreciative of his "celebrity" status, he is bothered by the idea of how the situation might have unfolded for someone without such a social status.Like Blaze News?
