Europol Seeks to Break Mobile Roaming Encryption

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. EU’s law enforcement agency Europol is another major entity that is setting its sights on breaking encryption. This time, it’s about home routing and mobile encryption, and the justification is a well-known one: encryption supposedly stands in the way of the ability of law enforcement to investigate. The overall rationale is that police and other agencies face serious challenges in doing their job (an argument repeatedly proven as false) and that destroying the internet’s currently best available security feature for all users – encryption – is the way to solve the problem. Europol’s recent paper treats home routing not as a useful security feature, but, as “a serious challenge for lawful interception.” Home routing works by encrypting data from a phone through the home network while roaming. We obtained a copy of the paper for you here. Europol appears to want to operate on trust: the agency “swears” it needs access to this protected traffic simply to catch criminals. And if the feature was gone, then ISPs and Europol could have smooth access to traffic. But if the past decade or so has taught law-abiding citizens anything, it is how, given the right tools, massive government and transnational organizations “seamlessly” slip from lawful to unlawful conduct, and secretive mass surveillance. Not to mention that tampering with encryption – in this instance available in home routing as a part of the privacy-enhancing technologies (PET) – in security and privacy terms, means opening a can of worms. It turns out, as ever, that agencies like Europol actually do have other mechanisms to go after criminals, some more controversial than others: one is “voluntary cooperation” by providers outside the EU (in which case Europol has to disclose information about “persons of interest” using foreign phone cards with other countries) as well as issuing an EIO – European Investigation Order. But that barely compares to breaking encryption, in terms of setting up the infrastructure for effective mass surveillance. Europol’s complaint about the available procedures naturally doesn’t mention any of that – instead, they talk about “slow EIO replies” that hinder “urgent investigations.” Europol presents two solutions to the home routing encryption “problem”: One, disable PET in home routing. The second is a cross-border mechanism inside the EU where “interception requests are quickly processed by service providers.” If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties, subscribe to Reclaim The Net. MRC UnCensored: Mike Benz Maps Out Fight Against Big Tech Gov’t Collusion

Mike Benz, a free speech advocate and former State Department official, said there is still hope for free speech on MRC UnCensored.  MRC Free Speech America Vice President Dan Schneider spoke with Benz about the devastating impact of the Murthy v. Missouri decision on free speech. In its final decision, the Court refused to stop the U.S. government from inappropriately asking that Big Tech companies do what it cannot–censor Americans. But Benz was undaunted by the Murphy results, telling Schneider, “I’ve not given up hope in any way on the case, even though this hearing, this result is not what we would have wanted. I think the most damaging aspect of it is the time sensitivity in light of the election.” Benz offered a myriad of ways that Americans can fight back against censorship and Big Tech collusion with the government.  “A lot of our work in terms of taking on the censorship industry can be done with or without whatever the Supreme Court’s current ruling is,” Benz said. He suggested that free speech advocates could work on "[c]reating civil lines of action as the states of Florida and Texas have done, creating pressure to be able to pry these censorship mercenaries off their institutions, using the legislative power to be able to hold hearings and investigations and subpoenas and essentially raising the cost of doing the censorship business.” Benz also argued that the Murthy decision would not be the end of the matter, suggesting that the Supreme Court would ultimately have to revisit the issue. The majority opinion for the Supreme Court’s Murthy decision, published on June 26, greatly impacts victims of government-coerced censorship as it largely eliminated their ability to get court injunctions against future government targeting.  The Court did not, however, eliminate censorship victims’ ability to gain retroactive relief, such as receiving monetary compensation from the specific bureaucrats who colluded with tech firms to silence their voices  Benz told Schneider that the ruling “[g]ives us an opportunity” as this case or future cases suing the federal government retroactively make their way through the courts. Free speech advocates and journalists can “actually provide that firepower so that a much stronger case can be brought when the merits are reached on the case,” he said. “I actually do think at that time, the evidence will be so overwhelming that we may be actually able to get a win on the merits,” Benz added. The former State Department official also bashed the “whole of society framework” used by the federal government, describing it as the government acting as the “quarterback” of a censorship team of civil society organizations, fact-checking organizations and media outlets.  Earlier in the discussion, Schneider pointed out an awful example of this collaborative work between the government and the private sector, blasting the Department of Homeland Security over its abuse of the Targeted Violence & Terrorism Prevention Grant Program (TVTP). Schneider noted that TVTP “was using our tax dollars, supposed to be used catching terrorists and instead was training people on how to infiltrate the Heritage Foundation, and Prager University and the Trump campaign with our tax dollars.” He added, “the State Department working with the US Embassy in Germany in Würzburg to train U.S. teachers on how to propagandize kids–in what you and I know as media literacy and then how the Homeland Security Department–then supercharged that effort to bring that training across classrooms all over America.”  In this case, the State Department advanced its censorship program by showing trainees how to bring propaganda tools from leftist “media literacy” groups Ad Fontes and NewsGuard into American classrooms. MRC Free Speech not only exposed this abuse, but had earlier successfully pushed for a provision prohibiting the Department of Defense from working with groups like NewsGuard or Ad Fontes which was signed by President Joe Biden. Poll expert uses only facts to disprove Biden campaign's narrative about his abysmal polling: 'Does not hold any water'

CNN data expert Harry Enten has dismantled one of the Biden campaign's top narratives about election polls. For almost the entirety of the 2024 campaign, Donald Trump has maintained a narrow lead over President Joe Biden in general election polls. The president's campaign has tried to explain away the polls by claiming they underestimate Biden's support and thus cannot be trusted. '... you have to go all the way back to the end of the 20th century, beginning of the 21st century, to find a Republican ahead at this point. Twenty-four years!' "Polling continues to be at odds with how Americans vote and consistently overestimates Donald Trump while underestimating President Biden," the Biden campaign claimed earlier this year. On Monday, Enten faced that narrative head-on and used data to prove that, in fact, the opposite is true. The data that Enten cited showed that, at this time in the 2020 election cycle, Biden had a nine-point advantage over Trump. But when the votes were counted on Election Day, Biden won the national vote by a much smaller margin than polls had predicted, indicating that Trump's support had been significantly underestimated. "The idea that the polls underestimated Joe Biden last time around, simply put, does not hold any water," Enten said. — (@) The principle of polls under-sampling Trump support is not a phenomenon limited to the 2020 election, according to Enten. "Last time around, Donald Trump actually did better in the results than his July polls by five points. You go back to 2016, you see something very similar. That is the July polls actually underestimated Donald Trump. He outperformed his July polls," he said. "So the idea in the Trump era that the polls have underestimated Democrats — whether it be in a Joe Biden matchup, whether it be a matchup against Hillary Clinton, whether it be in the midterms ... simply put, is not true," he explained. Not only is the Biden campaign's narrative not true, but Trump is accomplishing something unusual. The fact that Trump is leading his Democratic opponent indicates his strength, according to Enten, because it has been a quarter-century since a Republican presidential candidate led a Democrat in July. "Go all the way back: Who led in early July polls? Well, right now, Donald Trump is ahead. Go back in 2020, a Democrat, Biden. In 2016, Hillary Clinton, a Democrat — 2008, 2012, a Democrat. Even in 2004, where George W. Bush ended up winning, John Kerry was actually ahead in the polls at this point," Enten explained. "You have to go all the way back to 2000 to George W. Bush being ahead in the early July polls — you have to go all the way back to the end of the 20th century, beginning of the 21st century, to find a Republican ahead at this point. Twenty-four years!" — (@) Despite his bad polling and a growing number of Democrats calling on him to drop out of the presidential race, Biden vowed Monday that he will not step aside."I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Trump," Biden told congressional Democrats in a letter. 'If Biden does not step down, the Democrats will lose': Disney heiress halts DNC donations over Biden refusing to step down

Disney family heiress Abigail Disney said she is halting donations to the Democratic Party so long as President Biden is the party's nominee.Disney is the granddaughter of Roy O. Disney, who co-founded The Walt Disney Company with Walt Disney. The 64-year-old recently said that she would be withholding donations to the Democratic Party until Biden drops out.'We have an excellent Vice President.'"I intend to stop any contributions to the party unless and until they replace Biden at the top of the ticket. This is realism, not disrespect. Biden is a good man and has served his country admirably, but the stakes are far too high," Disney reportedly said. "If Biden does not step down the Democrats will lose. Of that I am absolutely certain. The consequences for the loss will be genuinely dire," she told CNBC.The president has stated that he is firmly committed to running in the 2024 federal election, and while calls for him to step down were initially echoed by Democratic Party members, many, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have about-faced.The Disney heiress has been a longtime donor to Democrats, in addition to activist PACs.CNBC reported the following donations:$50,000 to the Jane Fonda Climate PAC$35,000 to Democrats running for congressional seats$150,000 to Planned Parenthood Votes PAC$26,000 to Biden campaign$400,000 in total to Democrats in 2024 election cycleThe California-born Disney family member suggested Vice President Kamala Harris should replace Biden in order to beat Trump."We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden's (and let's not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot," she said.Other notable left-wing supporters to call for the ousting of President Biden have included WME Chief Ari Emanuel. The Hollywood agency mogul — who was portrayed on HBO's "Entourage" as the foul-mouthed Ari Gold — simply said Biden is too old:"I had a father who died at 92, but at 81 I took away his car, and it was a very simple test for me," Emanuel said, per the Hollywood Reporter. "If you were driving from downtown Beverly Hills to Malibu, would you want Biden to do it at night? Would you want Trump to do it at night? If the answer is neither, you cannot have them running a $27 trillion company called the United States."Even vocal left-wing author Stephen King said it was time for Biden to step out of the race:"Joe Biden has been a fine president, but it's time for him—in the interests of the America he so clearly loves—to announce he will not run for re-election."King's remarks received significant backlash, including from actor George Takei, who said the comments were simply a new "horror story" of the author.Like Blaze News? Mainstream media takes a shot at Sen. Jim Inhofe while announcing his death

Multiple mainstream media outlets led off their coverage of the death of Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) by criticizing him over his stance on climate change.Whether in the headline or in the lede, the news outlets made sure to let their readers know where Inhofe stood on the issue despite being in Congress for over 30 years. Inhofe passed away following a stroke after the Independence Day weekend. Inhofe retired from the Senate in early 2023.'Who once brought a snowball onto the Senate floor as a brazen symbol of his denial of climate change.'"GOP Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, known for backing military and denying that climate change is human-made, dies at 89," the Associated Press reported. — (@) "Former Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, a climate change denier and ex-Armed Services Committee chairman, dies at 89," was CNN's post on X. — (@) The New York Times labeled Inhofe as "arguably Washington’s most prominent denier of climate change." — (@) "Former Sen. Jim Inhofe, the Oklahoma Republican who once brought a snowball onto the Senate floor as a brazen symbol of his denial of climate change, died on Tuesday," Politico reported. Much of Politico's report was about Inhofe's stance on climate change despite also being the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee."But in a February 2015 stunt he brought a snowball onto the Senate floor to argue that human activity does not cause climate change. A wide swath of experts quickly pushed back, arguing that just because it snows sometimes in Washington, D.C., doesn’t mean human carbon emissions aren’t rapidly warming the climate," Politico recounted. The media's framing of Inhofe's death prompted users on X to compare how the same outlets covered the deaths of other, more controversial figures in the Senate and around the world. — (@) Like Blaze News? Hunter Biden withdraws request for new gun trial

Hunter Biden and his defense attorneys have now withdrawn their request for a new trial after Biden was convicted of federal gun charges last month. The first son's defense team seems quite indecisive about the motion for a new trial. The team first filed it on June 17, less than a week after a federal jury found Biden guilty on three felony counts related to a weapon he purchased in Delaware several years ago. But about an hour after filing the motion, the defense withdrew it.Even CNN acknowledged that the defense's efforts to secure a new trial for Biden, 54, were 'clumsy.'On June 24, the team filed the motion again, insisting that District Judge Maryellen Noreika did not have jurisdiction over the trial because the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia had not handed over the necessary mandate. On Tuesday, the defense reconsidered and withdrew the motion once again, admitting that the team had misunderstood the circuit court's ruling, which effectively returned jurisdiction to Noreika by clearly stamping on the document "certified order issued in lieu of mandate."In their counter filings, prosecutors, led by special counsel David Weiss, mercilessly teased the defense's understanding of appellate procedures. "The defendant’s motion is meritless and is based on his apparent misunderstanding of appellate practice and his failure to read the Third Circuit’s Orders," they wrote in a motion filed on Monday. Elsewhere in the filing, prosecutors noted the defense team's apparent "failure to read" previous court orders and described the motion for a new trial as a "laughable tale of the mystery of the missing mandates."Even CNN acknowledged that the defense's efforts to secure a new trial for Biden, 54, were "clumsy."Hunter Biden still denies any wrongdoing and intends to appeal his conviction. He is scheduled to be sentenced sometime later this year. Biden also faces federal charges in connection with over $1 million in alleged tax evasion. That trial is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles in September.Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!
