Luke Combs Questions The Purpose Of Love & Heartbreak In Teaser For New Song With Jon Bellion, “Why”
Coming out SWINGING.
This afternoon, Luke Combs teased a new song on his social media platforms called “Why,” which is an incredibly deep and honest look at innermost thoughts and feelings about being a father, specifically, but also a human being in general.
Luke has been very open about his struggles with mental health, and I have to imagine that at least partially inspired this new song. In 2021, he talked about his lifelong battle with anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), noting in an AXS interview that he remembers first struggling with it in middle school, explaining that he had difficulty getting a grip on it until college:
“Essentially, my version of fixing the blinds or straightening the carpet are thoughts that I play over and over in my head. For example, it’ll be something about my health. I’ll be worried that I’m gonna have a heart attack or have a stroke and it becomes this very obsessive thing that you literally can never have an answer to…
It’s something that you learn about yourself, and arming yourself with the knowledge of exactly what’s going on is the most important thing, I’ve found.”
At the time of the interview, Combs noted that he’d mostly overcome his anxiety and OCD but still faced a flare-up here and there, recently talking about it again during in interview with 60 Minutes Australia. He shared that his OCD has become “debilitating” at times, taking over aspects of his life, admitting that his worst flare-up in over three years happened roughly two days before he embarked on his Australia and New Zealand tour earlier this year.
In the lyrics of this song, which will seemingly feature Jon Bellion (I’m thinking he also might be a writer on it, too), who is included in the title of the song as a feature but is not this specific clip, Luke sings about being “stressed and strung out” about what the future holds or what might happen, questioning what the point of love anything is if it causes so much uncertainty and pain:
“Stressed and strung out about things that could happen,
I could move mountains with the worry I’ve done,
So I called my father and he started laughing,
He said,’ You think it’s bad now? Wait til you have a son,’
So why love anything anything, anything, anything at all,
Why love anything at all,
If the higher I fly is the further I fall,
Then why love anything at all?”
It cuts deep, and I’m already in love with the message and depth of the song and I can’t wait to hear the entire thing. Even if you don’t deal with an official diagnosis like OCD or anxiety, I think so many people can relate to what he’s saying in some way, no matter how big or small a role it might play in their life.
If you’re not familiar with Bellion, you might’ve heard his 2016 song “All Time Low,” which peaked in the Top 20 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. He has also written and produced for artists like Maroon 5, Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers, Halsey, Camila Cabello, Selena Gomez, Tori Kelly and more. It seems like an incredibly random pairing for Luke and him to team up, but from what I’ve heard so far based on one verse of this song, it sounds like they’ve come up with something really special.
Do yourself a favor and check i tout, this sounds like a hit:

Luke has said recently he has new music coming soon and also plans to do a full-on tour next year, which will likely be in support of a new record that we’ll hopefully get to hear sooner rather than later.
Last week, he dropped an incredible live performance video with multi-instrumentalist musician, singer, and songwriter Ivan Neville as well as the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, where he blew the roof off singing “Bring It On Home to Me”:
