Virginia Senate Democrats are attempting to block the nomination of a prominent advocate against anti-Semitism from joining George Mason University’s Board of Visitors, weeks after a George Mason student was arrested for helping plot a terror attack on Israel’s consulate in New York. Kenneth Marcus, described by The New York Times as “The Man Who Helped Redefine Campus Anti-Semitism,” was appointed by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin in June. However, the Virginia Senate Democrats voted this week to reject his appointment in the Privileges and Elections Committee. Marcus is the founder and leader of the Brandeis Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting civil and human rights for Jewish people. He previously served as the Assistant U.S. Secretary of Education for Civil Rights in the first Trump administration and was a Distinguished Senior Fellow at George Mason’s Antonin Scalia Law School. Marcus, who has been serving in the position since his nomination last summer — Virginia law allows nominees to serve prior to confirmation — was blindsided by the amendment that struck his name from the resolution of appointments. “I was surprised and dismayed to learn of yesterday’s action and I am hopeful that the general assembly leadership in both chambers will reconsider,” Marcus said. “I have been at work trying to strengthen George Mason University for months now.” Virginia’s legislature still has opportunities to add Marcus’s nomination back into the resolution, though sources say it could be an uphill battle. During the brief debate, Sen. Aaron Rouse (D) noted that out of respect, appointees could not be referred to by name in the discussion. In response, Sen. Bill DeSteph (R) followed the guidelines of not using names, but questioned why certain nominees were being removed, stating, “I think members of the committee should know why certain nominees are stricken. Otherwise, if we infer the reason, it could go in the wrong direction.” Sen. Adam Ebbin (D), who championed the amendment, responded, “I think that we found the nominees to be inconsistent with the expectations, goals and values we have for the work of those boards.” A spokesman for Sen. Tara Durant (R) told The Daily Wire that Durant and every Republican voted against the amendment that removed Marcus’s appointment and others. “There was no transparency in why the individuals were removed after inquiring to the Chair and the Senator that made the motion,” the spokesman said. Durant later voted with 14 out of 15 members to approve the rest of Youngkin’s nominations. Marcus emphasized his efforts in helping George Mason University take “significant actions,” including helping with the implementation of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism into the university’s anti-discrimination policy. Marcus noted that GMU’s adoption of the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism was helpful in Harvard’s settlement agreement this week in two lawsuits alleging the school of mishandling anti-Semitism on campus, which resulted in Harvard also adopting the definition. “It’s not every day that Harvard University follows George Mason’s lead, so I was very pleased that that happened this week,” Marcus said. “George Mason has not been immune to the anti-Semitic developments happening in higher education and there have been highly publicized incidents recently which has been a concern of mine and my colleagues,” Marcus told The Daily Wire. Last month, George Mason freshman and Egyptian national Abdullah Ezzeldin Taha Mohamed Hassan was arrested for planning a terrorist attack on Israel’s consulate in New York. The student who operated pro-ISIS social media accounts glorifying violence against Jews faces 20 years if convicted of trying to teach someone how to create an explosive with intent to murder internationally protected persons. “I have been deeply honored by Governor Youngkin’s nomination and have been proud to help GMU and its students,” Marcus added. “I certainly would appreciate any support that would be provided.” Committee members Rouse, DeSteph, Ebbin, Sen. Craig Deeds (D), Sen. Travis Hackworth (R), Sen. Glen Sturtevant (R), Sen. Schuyler VanValkenburg (D), Sen. Jennifer Carroll Foy (D), Sen. Russet Perry (D), Sen. Saddam Azlan Salim (D), Sen. Tammy Milchi (R), Sen. Kannan Srinivasan (D), and Sen. Luther Henry Cifers (R) did not respond to a request for comment.

According to a new report, President Donald Trump has revoked the security details for his former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Pompeo’s senior policy adviser, Brian Hook, who also served as the U.S. Special Representative for Iran, and Trump’s former national security adviser, John Bolton. All three men have been threatened by the theocratic regime of Iran, which blamed Pompeo and Hook for the assassination of Iranian terror master, Iran Revolutionary Guard commander Qassem Soleimani in 2020. “God willing, we are looking to kill Trump [and] Pompeo … and military commanders who issued the order should be killed,” Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps aerospace force, said in February 2023. Pompeo, a staunch supporter of Trump during his first term, had both praised and criticized Trump after he left office, lauding Trump’s work on the southern border but criticizing him for supposedly mishandling classified documents and additional spending which raised the deficit. Last August, a Pakistani national with what FBI Director Christopher Wray called “close ties to Iran” was arrested and charged with orchestrating a scheme to reportedly assassinate Trump as well as other government officials. According to court documents, in April 2024, Asif Merchant, 46, who revealed he has a wife and children in both Iran and Pakistan, came to the U.S. after spending time in Iran. He contacted someone about his alleged scheme; that person, who became a confidential source (CS), then contacted the FBI. The U.S. Department of Justice unsealed an indictment against multiple individuals who were involved in plots to murder an Iranian dissident, two Jewish Americans, and Trump on U.S. soil. Prosecutors indicted Farhad Shakeri, 51, of Iran, on multiple charges, including murder-for-hire, conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, money laundering conspiracy, conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, and conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and sanctions against the Government of Iran.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has already arrested hundreds of illegal migrants in the first few days of the Trump administration, including MS-13 gang members and a Haitian gang member who shouted “F*** Trump!” and “Biden forever!” as he was carted away. Video of the Haitian gang member mouthing off during his arrest was captured by Fox News, which had a reporter embedded with ICE in Boston. “I’m not going back to Haiti!” the arrested migrant shouted, sticking his head out the window of the ICE car. “F*** Trump! Also in Boston, ICE arrested multiple MS-13 gang members and several illegal migrant murder and rape suspects, a total of eight arrests in one day. Some of the arrested migrants had been released with ICE detainers that were not honored by sanctuary areas. Some also had Interpol Red Notices, meaning police forces internationally are asked to arrest them, often for extradition. “Today was a good day. Today we took several significant public safety threats out of our communities,” said Patricia Hyde, acting director for Boston’s ICE field office. But we’re here to tell the Commonwealth and the rest of the country that we’re going to find them, whether they’re released or not,” she said. A woman could be heard yelling “thank you” to the ICE agents as they arrested the criminals, Fox reported. President Donald Trump has ordered mass deportations of illegal migrants, starting with dangerous criminals. On his first day in office, he signed multiple executive orders, revamping ICE enforcement, resuming the construction of the border wall, and reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy, among other immigration priorities. Within hours of Trump’s inauguration, the Biden administration’s CBP One app, which allowed asylum seekers to make appointments with border authorities, was also shut down. Less than 48 hours after Trump was sworn in, ICE had already arrested more than 460 illegal migrants. Several men charged or convicted of sexually abusing children were also arrested, as well as a man convicted of “sexual penetration with a foreign object on an unaware victim.” Under the Biden administration, nearly 11 million illegal encounters were recorded between fiscal year 2021 and October 2024. Only about three million encounters were recorded nationwide during Trump’s first term.

A movement has burgeoned among Reddit users to ban links to X, formerly known as Twitter, and Reddit has no plans to interfere with such actions. “Since Tuesday, hundreds of subreddits have discussed and/or implemented bans against the site formerly called Twitter, as reported by 404 Media,” Ars Technica reported. “Reddit users in support of X bans like the one instituted by r/londonontario have pointed to various reasoning, including not being able to see tweet links without having an X account, Elon Musk appearing to make a Nazi salute at the presidential inauguration on Monday (as cited by r/Christianity’s and r/newjersey’s bans, for example), and general dislike for Musk and/or how he runs X.” “NBC News has identified more than 50 subreddit communities where moderators have since announced that links from X, formerly Twitter, will no longer be allowed in new posts and comments. Republican lawmakers praised President Donald Trump over an expected pardon for pro-lifers prosecuted and imprisoned by the Biden administration over peaceful protests at abortion facilities.   Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) said Thursday that it would be a victory for America after The Daily Wire reported that pardoning the pro-lifers targeted by the Biden administration was an immediate priority for Trump’s team and could come in a matter of days. Lee has sponsored a companion bill in the Senate.  “A victory for people of faith and the rule of law in America Unjust & unequal application of the FACE Act against Pro Life activists stops under President Trump. Let’s pass my bill with [Chip Roy] to repeal the FACE Act to end these political persecutions forever,” Lee said.  Other lawmakers also celebrated the news of the impending pardons.  “Weaponizing the DOJ against pro-life protestors exercising their First Amendment rights was wrong,” West Virginia Rep. Riley Moore said. “Great news as the March for Life comes to Washington tomorrow!!” Over the past few days, Republicans have urged Trump, who previously spoke out against the arrests of the pro-lifers, to issue the pardons.  On Thursday, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) highlighted the plight of several of the pro-lifers currency imprisoned from the Senate floor.  “This is a grotesque assault on the principles of this country. That is why I have urged President Donald Trump to pardon all of these pro-life prisoners unjustly persecuted…by the corrupt Biden Administration, and I do mean corrupt,” Hawley said.  Hawley specifically mentioned multiple pro-life activists currently in prison, like Bevelyn Williams (41 months) and Lauren Handy (57 months), and those facing prison like 89-year-old Eva Edl. Edl, who survived a World War II-era Yugoslavian concentration camp, faces 10 years in prison over a conviction in Detroit over a peaceful pro-life protest.  “From a man who used his power illegitimately to pardon his own family, to pardon his own son, to excuse his own kin of wrongful, willful illegalities, protected drug lords, and killers, and murderers, and kingpins, and yet sent concentration camp survivors to prison because they spoke up for life, it does not get morally worse than that,” Hawley said of Biden.  “President Trump can turn the chapter on this dark period of our history. He can right the wrongs that this last administration perpetrated,” he added. “He can begin to restore the requirements that the conscience of our country puts in front of us.” Citing reporting of their trial from The Daily Wire, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) sent a letter to Trump on Thursday urging him to pardon six pro-lifers convicted in Nashville last year, including one currently in prison and one set to go to prison. Big shake-ups could be in the works for CNN as the long-running cable news network adjusts to the new media landscape and a second Donald Trump presidency — and in addition to the possibility of imminent layoffs, the network could be gearing up to shuffle around some of its longtime anchors. CNBC reported on Wednesday that CNN intended to announce layoffs impacting some 210 employees, or approximately six percent of its total staff. The news came alongside reports of layoffs at NBC as well, although the number of employees impacted by those is expected to be much lower. The layoffs at both networks, according to the report, are part of a shift in focus toward more digital content as fewer and fewer people turn to broadcast and cable news for information. Along with the layoffs, anchors at CNN could also see some changes in their schedules and assignments, Fox News Digital reported on Thursday — and they may not be thrilled at the prospect. Veteran CNN broadcaster Jim Acosta, who made a name for himself during Trump’s first term in office by becoming a regular foil both for Trump and for then-White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, could balk at a possible move to late nights. The midnight thing is shocking [but] it is what it is.” The Los Angeles Times reported that Acosta, rather than take the late-night spot, could be considering a timely exit from the network. Acosta is not the only longtime broadcaster who could see a dramatic change. Thompson has already confirmed that Wolf Blitzer’s long-running program “The Situation Room” will move from early evenings to Acosta’s current slot at 10 a.m. ET, and he will share anchor duties with Pamela Brown.
