My Dog Ate a Sock But Is Acting Normal, Should I Worry? (Vet Answer)

Click to Skip Ahead What to Do What Can Happen If a Dog Eats a Sock FAQ Most dogs love to put things in their mouths, especially things that are pungent or interesting, such as a sock. While socks aren’t toxic, they can cause some pretty serious complications in your dog’s body. If your dog happens to eat a sock, first stay calm, then call your veterinarian. They will be able to advise you on the next steps to take which may likely include a veterinary visit. Read on for more. What to Do If Your Dog Eats a Sock Whether you actually witness your dog wolfing down a sock or notice that one is missing from the laundry hamper and your dog has a suspicious grin on, there will likely be a lot of questions streaking through your brain. Fortunately, we can help you answer some of those questions so you can focus on the issue at hand. 1. Stay Calm This is likely easier said than done, but nothing good ever comes from panic. So, try to keep your emotions on an even keel so that you can do what’s best for your dog with a clear head. Take a few deep breaths while you remove your dog from the situation to prevent them from eating anything else, and give them a quick look over to check for signs of distress, such as difficulty breathing. Image Credit: Natallia Miranchuk, Shutterstock 2. Contact Your Vet If your dog is choking or having difficulty breathing, get them to a vet immediately. If possible, have someone call ahead so that you can focus on driving while the clinic prepares for your arrival. If your dog simply has a pleased look on their face and seems otherwise fine, still contact your vet. There are many variables at play here, including the size of your dog, the number or size of the socks, and whether or not your dog is showing any signs. Based on these variables, your vet will formulate a game plan, which may include bringing your pup in immediately if removal is necessary or monitoring them at home for passage of the sock the way nature intended. 3. Monitor at Home If your vet says to get your dog to the clinic immediately, it will likely mean they will induce vomiting or remove the sock via endoscopy or even surgery. This will likely be the option for distressed dogs—either having difficulty breathing or abdominal pain complete with vomiting and possibly constipation. It may also be the option for smaller dogs or those that ate multiple socks in one go. For dogs that seem to care less about just eating a sock, your vet may recommend watching them at home, but that doesn’t mean you can necessarily sit back and relax. Instead, you need to watch them for any signs of distress. This may mean vomiting, not eating, lethargy, abdominal pain, or constipation. Any of these signs could be an indication that the sock isn’t moving through properly and veterinary attention may be needed. If your pup continues to feel fine, you’ll want to watch their bowel movements. Within a day or two, you should see the sock in its full form come out with a bowel movement. Things like cotton and other fabrics aren’t digestible, so they won’t be broken down by the digestive tract. If you don’t see the sock within a couple of days, it could be stuck somewhere in the intestines, so you’ll want to contact your vet. Image Credit: Pavle Bugarski, Shutterstock. What Happens If a Dog Eats a Sock? Socks seem fairly harmless. They’re soft, small, and aren’t toxic, but they also aren’t meant to be eaten. When consumed, socks won’t be broken down, so they will have to move through the digestive tract as a whole. This becomes a problem because the digestive tract is mainly a series of narrow tubes with many twists and turns for a large item to become lodged. Choke The first issue you’ll want to watch out for when your dog eats a sock is choking. This is when something gets lodged in the esophagus, potentially blocking airflow to the lungs. Choking is an emergency, so if your dog is pawing at their mouth, hacking and gagging, or having difficulty breathing, contact your vet immediately. In some cases, your vet will have you perform the Heimlich Maneuver at home. Intestinal Blockage The second major issue that can arise from eating a sock is an intestinal blockage. The intestines are a long tube that meanders through the abdomen in a series of twists and turns. Since a sock isn’t broken down in the stomach like your dog’s kibble is, it can become lodged in any of those turns, causing digestion to slow and backup behind it. Dogs with intestinal blockages may show up with vomiting, abdominal pain, dehydration, and constipation. Intestinal blockages are considered an emergency, and they may require surgery to fix. Image Credit: stux, Pixabay Frequently Asked Questions My dog ate a sock but is acting fine, should I be concerned? Whether or not your dog is showing any issues after swallowing a sock, you should still contact your veterinarian. While they may recommend that you watch your dog at home, they may also recommend bringing them in immediately. Though your dog may be acting fine now, they may not be tomorrow, so you’ll want to make sure your vet is in the loop should treatment be needed. How long does it take a sock to pass through a dog’s system? Most things will move through a dog’s digestive system within 24-48 hours. However, sometimes things like socks may take a little bit longer. So, as long as your dog continues to act normal, monitor their bowel movements until you see the sock. However, if your dog suddenly stops eating, starts vomiting, or isn’t having any bowel movements, see your vet as soon as possible. How can I keep my dog from eating socks? When a dog eats a sock, it likely isn’t because they are hungry. Rather it may be because they are bored or seeking attention. Of course, you’ll always want to keep socks out of reach of your dog, but also making sure they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and one-on-one attention will hopefully help prevent your dog from eating socks. Speak to your veterinarian if your dog gravitates towards eating non-food items like socks. In Conclusion While it may seem strange, it’s not uncommon for dogs to eat things like socks. If this is something your canine companion has done, keep a cool head and contact your vet immediately. Eating socks can lead to problems like choking and an intestinal blockage, so veterinary treatment may be necessary to remove it before it can wreak too much havoc. Your vet will either remove the sock by inducing vomiting, endoscopy, or surgery or they may advise you to monitor them at home while they pass it naturally. Even if your dog is acting normal after eating a sock, it’s always best to contact your vet. Former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO involved in 'violent' international sex trafficking operation using male models: Feds

A former Abercrombie & Fitch CEO was arrested Tuesday for his alleged participation in an international sex trafficking operation using male models, according to federal prosecutors. Mike Jeffries, 80, along with his "romantic partner" Matthew Smith and business associate James Jacobson are accused of recruiting the models for the operation. The three defendants were charged with sex trafficking and interstate prostitution. The suspects reportedly hired a 'secret staff' to maintain events where alleged victims would be provided drugs and alcohol to make it easier to coerce them into sexual activity.Breon Peace — the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York — said at a news conference in Brooklyn, “To anyone who thinks they can exploit and coerce others by using this so-called casting couch system, this case should serve as a warning: prepare to trade that couch for a bed in federal prison.” Peace said Jeffries, while he was CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch from 1992 to 2014, used “his power, his wealth, and his influence to traffic men for his own sexual pleasure and that of his romantic partner, Smith.”Brad Edwards — a civil lawyer representing some of the alleged victims — proclaimed: "These arrests are a huge first step towards obtaining justice for the many victims who were exploited and abused through this sex trafficking scheme that operated for many years under the legitimate cover Abercrombie provided."The indictment claims that Jeffries and Smith used Jacobsen as well as employees, contractors, and security professionals to run an operation "dedicated to fulfilling their sexual desires and ensuring that their international sex trafficking and prostitution business was kept secret." The former retail executive and Smith relied on their vast financial resources, Jeffries' power as the CEO of Abercrombie, and numerous people, including Jacobson and a network of employees, contractors, and security professionals, to run a business "that was dedicated to fulfilling their sexual desires and ensuring that their international sex trafficking and prostitution business was kept secret," the indictment alleges.Peace said the models were told they needed to comply with sexual demands or their modeling careers could suffer. According to the feds, Jeffries and Smith would forcefully subject the alleged victims to violent sexual contact.Peace said the international sex trafficking operation lasted from at least 2008 until 2015 and allegedly required millions of dollars to support its massive infrastructure to maintain secrecy. Federal prosecutors identified 15 victims of the sex trafficking operation, but Peace said there are "dozens and dozens" of potential victims. Peace claimed Jeffries and Smith reportedly employed Jacobson as a “recruiter” to find men and pay them to engage in sex acts.According to the indictment, Jacobson traveled throughout the U.S. and internationally to recruit men for alleged sex events. Prosecutors said Jacobson required the potential candidates to first engage in sex with him to determine if they were worthy to be passed on to Jeffries and Smith. The alleged sex events reportedly occurred in New York, London, and Venice. The indictment claimed that many of the alleged victims were coerced and teased with modeling opportunities."In exchange for providing the position of power and unfettered access to corporate funds necessary for Jeffries to sexually terrorize aspiring male models, Abercrombie knowingly and intentionally benefited and received things of value from Jeffries and his sex trafficking operation, including the value Jeffries himself brought to the brand," the lawsuit read.Smith allegedly would personally select men to be flown to the couple’s homes in the Hamptons or to hotels around the world “to engage in commercial sex,” Peace claimed. The suspects reportedly hired a "secret staff" to maintain events where alleged victims would be provided drugs and alcohol to make it easier to coerce them into sexual activity. The staff purportedly ensured that the alleged victims handed over their phones and signed nondisclosure agreements.“Prosecutions like this are really impossible without the bravery of victims who are willing to report what happened to them to law enforcement,” Peace declared. Brian Bieber — an attorney for Jeffries — told USA Today that his legal team would respond to the allegations "after the Indictment is unsealed, and when appropriate, but plan to do so in the courthouse — not the media."Federal prosecutors stated the investigation began in January after alleged victims filed a civil lawsuit a year prior. When the accusations first surfaced in 2023, Abercrombie & Fitch said the company was “appalled and disgusted” by the claims and would hire an outside law firm to conduct a review of the allegations. Jeffries was known for transforming Abercrombie & Fitch into a powerhouse fashion brand. One of the plaintiffs, David Bradberry — former crewman on the reality series "Below Deck" — said Jeffries made Abercrombie successful by the "oversexualization of young men," ABC News reported.Abercrombie & Fitch declined to provide a comment to ABC News.Like Blaze News? 'Is this Russian disinformation?': Journalist reveals the extreme bias in the White House press room

Host Bianca de la Garza says that reporters in the White House press briefing room routinely try to coax the press secretary into supporting their politics with inflammatory language.De la Garza explains that through countless hours of watching briefings and inside reporting on press room exchanges, White House reporters have been ruthless in their pursuit of driving specific narratives.According to de la Garza, press room reporters are "savages" who have no shame in trying to push press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre in a direction that would help their story, even if there isn't evidence to support their claim."I remember one reporter asking the press secretary, 'Do you think this is Russian disinformation?' They were trying to help her and lead her into saying what they wanted," de la Garza told Blaze News in an exclusive interview."I was like, 'Didn't we go through this already?'"Questions are often so egregious and so clearly biased, de la Garza says she sometimes wonders whether the reporters work for the government."These people never learn! I want to ask, 'Are you a plant for the Democrat Party?'" she laughed.Despite labeling Jean-Pierre a "terrible press secretary," de la Garza notes that her job is difficult given the situation she is put in. She added that it would be "hard to go out there and do that job" for anyone who doesn't believe in the policies their administration is implementing. When asked who she thought Donald Trump's next press secretary should be if he wins, de la Garza hesitated to throw out any names of her colleagues or favorite commentators due to how taxing and repetitive the role is."You can't be in the job and not love this country and love the people," the host said. 'I want smart people in office, I don't want career politicians.'The experienced host also touched on the sheer number of politicians and media members she's seen flip sides over the years. When asked how viewers can trust the reporting of people who are seemingly so firm in their position only to change depending on who is in office, de la Garza said not to put too much stock in those opinions. "It's an act of self-preservation," she explained. "People go back and forth; it is interesting how some people will allow themselves to be used as pawns and come out and speak against the president after working for the administration."She continued, "I don't take too much stock in that, because I think there were many people who used to be Democrats that have come out in support of [Trump]."Overall, de la Garza claimed integrity is the most important role for both a good journalist and good politician."I want smart people in office, I don't want career politicians. ... I think we need more outsiders," she stressedShe added that while she "understands the game" being played, there's no excuse for lies and covering up any government wrongdoing.De la Garza's book, "Incoming: On the Front Lines of the Left’s War on Truth," is available now.Like Blaze News? Democrats are failing miserably to persuade men in Georgia to vote for Harris, new poll finds

A new poll found that males in Georgia are overwhelmingly rejecting the Harris-Walz presidential campaign, and Democrats are winning women by only a small margin. According to results from the University of Georgia School of Public and International Affairs Survey Research Center, fewer than three out of every 10 Georgian males are voting for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. 'Barack’s lecture threatening to revoke their black cards for not voting for Kamala is backfiring.'Only 28% of male respondents said they backed Harris while an overwhelming 59% said they support former President Donald Trump for president. The tremendous gender gap contributes to Harris currently losing the state to Trump by four percentage points, from 47% to 43%. Meanwhile, Harris is only winning the female vote in Georgia with 55% to 37%, a much smaller margin for the Democrat than the male margin for Trump. Trump has a margin of 38% among whites in the poll, and Harris leads among blacks with 74% support to 8%. Many on social media enjoyed the news out of Georgia and responded hilariously. "There's a reason the campaign switched from the Brat theme to relentlessly nagging men. It doesn't appear to be working," responded podcaster Scott Greer. "Proud to say we don't have many Beta dudes here in Georgia," read one response. "I guess Barack’s lecture threatening to revoke their black cards for not voting for Kamala is backfiring," read another tweet. Georgia, once a reliable red state, has emerged in recent years as a pivotal battleground state with very important congressional consequences from down-ballot races. Like Blaze News?
