Guy Maddison of Mudhoney: The ClassicRockHistory.com Interview

In 2001, Aussie-born bassist Guy Maddison joined Mudhoney, replacing the nearly irreplaceable Matt Lukin. In short order, Maddison made his talents known, contributing his grooves to 2002’s Since We’ve Become Translucent, and has stayed on ever since, with his latest four-stringed thunder rumbling across speakers via Mudhoney’s 2023 record, Plastic Eternity. But Maddison’s six studio (and one live) recordings with Mudhoney are just the tip of the iceberg. In the ’80s, Maddison was a member of Lubricated Goat, Bushpig, With Monroe’s Fur, and Bloodloss. To that end, any proper punk-loving rocker will happily digest Maddison’s catalog, which blends punk, alt, The post Guy Maddison of Mudhoney: The ClassicRockHistory.com Interview appeared first on ClassicRockHistory.com.

Who is Carolyn Keene? Little-Known Facts About the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories

The mystery stories of Nancy Drew are one of the finest examples of a successful book series in the history of America. Publisher Edward Stratemeyer created the fictional character in 1930, in the midst of the Great Depression. Sadly, he passed away just two weeks later but Nancy Drew was already making history. The character was unlike anyone girls had read about before. She was smart, brave... Source

State Lawmakers Expect Big Wins on Referendums on Citizen-Only Voting

State lawmakers expressed confidence that ballot initiatives to ensure that only citizens vote will win “overwhelming” support—including in two battleground states. North Carolina and Wisconsin—where polls are tight in the presidential race and have been close in recent statewide contests—will be voting on the matter. Other states with citizen-only voting referendums are red states Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, and South Carolina.  “Most people in our state think that only American citizens can vote anyway. So, they already believe that’s the case. They believe that’s the way it should be, and they’ll have an opportunity to weigh in on it Nov. 5,” Wisconsin state Sen. Julian Bradley, a Republican, told The Daily Signal after a news conference Wednesday.  Bradley was in Washington with other lawmakers from several states to promote ballot measures at an event sponsored by Americans for Citizen Voting.  All this comes as Congress considers adding a House-passed bill requiring proof of citizenship for voter registration to an omnibus spending bill.  Some municipalities and counties across the country have granted noncitizens the right to vote in local elections, such as for mayor or school board. Election security advocates have expressed concerns about the ability of local governments to keep separate voting lists to prevent them from also voting for statewide and federal offices. It’s already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections and in most states. Yet, several states make illegal immigrants eligible for driver’s licenses and other benefits, providing ample opportunities for them also to register to vote illegally in federal elections, critics note. The Wisconsin state legislature voted along party lines to put the measure on the ballot, but Bradley said the measure has polled at 76% support among voters. “I hope to beat that, but I’ll take 76%, especially if you look at a battleground state like Wisconsin. You had a gubernatorial election decided by 20,000 votes in 2018, presidential election in 2020, the presidential election in 2016, in 2022, I think our attorney general, our secretary of state, a lot of statewide elections were decided by 20,000 or less votes,” Bradley added. “So, to be able to have a question go before the people that could pass overwhelmingly, that’s a big deal.” In most of the eight states, the ballot language would change their state constitution to say “every” citizen can vote to “only” citizens can vote.  “That’s important, because we’ve seen a couple of court cases which have used that term ‘every’ as a permissive term,” North Carolina state Sen. Brad Overcash, a Republican, told The Daily Signal. “So, we’re going to have a chance to change that from ‘every’ to ‘only.’”  Overcash anticipates the measure will pass easily in North Carolina, even though many elections have been close in the state.  “Even when we presented it in the legislature, it got some pushback from some Democrats, but it still passed on a bipartisan basis,” Overcash said. “I think the voters are going to overwhelmingly support this.” Georgia doesn’t have a ballot measure, but already has citizenship verification, Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said.  He noted that Fair Fight Action, an organization founded by twice-unsuccessful Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and the liberal group Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda sued to prevent citizenship verification in Georgia. Georgia won both cases.   “We primarily used the Department of Driver Service. The beautiful thing about Driver Services is they are Real ID compliant, so they have to check citizenship,” Raffensperger told The Daily Signal. “They actually do a lot of background work to say if this person has qualified, if they are a lawful citizen.” “We did a citizenship audit. We found about 1,600 people, voters, that attempted to register, but couldn’t verify citizenship,” Raffensperger said. “We are doing our second audit right now. We should have our results shortly.” As noted in my book “The Myth of Voter Suppression,” there have been numerous adjudicated cases of foreign nationals registering to vote and voting in past elections.  The two Georgia-based groups aren’t the only left-leaning organizations opposing measures to stop noncitizen voting.  The Brennan Center—a liberal think tank based at New York University that routinely opposes election-security measures, such as voter-ID requirements and generally denies the existence of election irregularities—also opposes additional citizen-only voting measures. “It’s worth saying, once again, that the notion of widespread noncitizen voting is a lie,” Brennan Center President Michael Waldman wrote last month on the organization’s website. “An urban myth. It’s simply not true. States have a multiplicity of systems in place to prevent it from happening. Noncitizen voting is illegal four times over, and the reality is that it’s incredibly rare.” Meanwhile, many House Republicans are calling on House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., to include the SAVE Act in the fiscal-year-end omnibus spending legislation.  Short for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, the SAVE Act would amend the 1993 National Voter Registration Act—the “motor voter law”—to require that states obtain documentary proof of U.S. citizenship before anyone can register to vote. Asked about the push to include the measure in the omnibus bill, Raffensperger told The Daily Signal, “That’s a Congress question.” He added: I just believe we need to make sure that only Americans vote in our elections. I think that Georgia makes a great model. Other state lawmakers didn’t hold back.  “I would love for elected officials to go on the record and say we want noncitizen voting in our elections so people will see what they are really doing,” Oklahoma state Sen. Shane Jett, a Republican, said during the news conference. “In Oklahoma, we have a balanced-budget amendment. A lot of the people that didn’t support this amendment weren’t invited to come back to the Capitol by their own constituents who wanted them to come home and think about their life choices. So, go on the record.”  South Carolina state Sen. Josh Kimbrell, a Republican, said ensuring that only citizens vote could be worth a potential government shutdown.  “If Democrats want to shut down the federal government over letting noncitizens vote, I think that’s a losing issue,” Kimbrell said, adding: Let them do it. You can’t blame Speaker Johnson for shutting down the government if Democrats in the Senate refuse to defend the integrity of elections. There is overwhelming support for these referendums, overwhelming support for the SAVE Act, if you really hear what’s in it. When you talk about defending citizens-only voting, both parties, it’s double-digit leads. Prior referendums on the subject have done well in other states. In 2022, constitutional amendments requiring citizenship to vote were approved by 73% of voters in Louisiana and 77% in Ohio, according to Ballotpedia. In 2020, similar constitutional amendments were approved by 79% of voters in Florida; 77% in Alabama; and 62% in Colorado, a blue state. In 2018, 65% of voters in North Dakota approved such an amendment. The post State Lawmakers Expect Big Wins on Referendums on Citizen-Only Voting appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Musk Launches ‘Alexandre Files’ to Expose Origin of Brazil’s Free Speech Assault

The social media platform X has unveiled the “Alexandre Files,” similar to the “Twitter Files,” exposing the draconian court rules that crippled its operations in Brazil. Released as a thread on Sunday and expanded over the following days, the evidence delved into the origins of the legal battle between X owner Elon Musk and Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.  At the core of the legal dispute is Musk’s courageous refusal to censor Brazilian personalities and politicians, who de Moraes claims threaten Brazil’s democracy. Also, de Moraes requested Musk hire a Brazil-based legal team, orders that have gone unanswered. Among the targeted accounts is that of Sen. Marcos do Val, a member of the center-right party Podemos (We Can, in English). De Moraes ordered X to censor do Val after he raised grave allegations against de Moraes and the Brazilian police, the thread asserted. “De Moraes contends that Senator do Val committed a crime in the following (now-deleted) post by denouncing the Chief of the Brazilian Federal Police, Fabio Alvarez Shor, for acting as de Moraes’ henchman and violating Brazilians’ human rights on de Moraes’s orders,” the thread added. De Moraes contends that Senator do Val committed a crime in the following (now-deleted) post by denouncing the Chief of the Brazilian Federal Police, Fabio Alvarez Shor, for acting as de Moraes’ henchman and violating Brazilians’ human rights on de Moraes’s orders. Pointing out… — Alexandre Files (@AlexandreFiles) September 1, 2024 Val’s accusations stem from the fact that Shor indicted former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for allegedly falsifying COVID-19 vaccine data. De Moraes is also overseeing several other criminal probes into Bolsonaro. “Pointing out that De Moraes and the Brazilian police chief are engaging in human rights violations is now a crime in Brazil,” the thread noted, sharing an English translation of one of Val’s posts that triggered Moraes’s censorship orders. The post continued: “Shor has been raiding homes with illegal search warrants, pointing guns in the faces of children, and confiscating cell phones from those children. These actions are inhumane and unacceptable, and are being carried out under the false flag of the Federal Police, when in fact they are direct orders from Alexandre de Moraes, with the connivance of this cowardly delegate.” Other posts that de Moraes targeted included do Val’s pledge to reveal alleged evidence of federal police involvement in illegal actions and human rights violations, stemming from the Brazilian investigations of other pro-Bolsonaro individuals. De Moraes defended the decision to order X to ban do Val, claiming that the senator's accusations were part of an “intimidation” campaign aimed at thwarting separate investigations into pro-Bolsonaro individuals. X was suspended in Brazil on Saturday after Musk did not comply with the orders and failed to appoint a Brazilian legal representative to represent the company after a 24-hour deadline. De Moraes’s threats force Musk to shut down business operations in Brazil. Conservatives are under attack. CNN brings 'Reliable Sources' host Brian Stelter out of exile. Here are his top 3 unreliable moments.

CNN brings 'Reliable Sources' host Brian Stelter out of exile. Here are his top 3 unreliable moments.

Billionaire John Malone, now a Warner Bros. Discovery shareholder with major sway, told CNBC several months ahead of Discovery's 2022 merger with WarnerMedia, "I would like to see CNN evolve back to the kind of journalism that it started with, and actually have journalists, which would be unique and refreshing." During his brief stint as CEO at CNN, Chris Licht appeared keen to realize this dream. The company announced in August 2022 that it was canceling "Reliable Sources with Brian Stelter" and canning its host. After spending some time soul-searching and concern-mongering about so-called disinformation behind the scenes at Apple, at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, and in guest spots on other cable news shows, Stelter will return to CNN just in time for the election. Stelter announced Tuesday on X, "I'm returning to @CNN in a brand new role as Chief Media Analyst. I'll be appearing on TV, developing digital content, and once again helming the Reliable Sources newsletter." While various personalities in the news media ecosystem have celebrated Stelter's return, some critics have alternatively issued reminders about his track record for less-than-reliable reporting. Here are three instances in which Stelter prioritized narrative over facts. Hunter Biden laptop story Less than a month ahead of the 2020 election, the New York Post reported about the damning contents of Hunter Biden's laptop and raised various questions about then-candidate Joe Biden, especially about his shady ties to Ukraine. Elements of the intelligence community hostile to President Donald Trump — including active CIA contractors — swooped in to shield Biden in the final weeks before the election, releasing a public letter on Oct. 19, 2020, asserting that the Hunter Biden laptop story had "all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation" intended to hurt the Democrat's candidacy. Facebook under Mark Zuckerberg censored the corresponding post online. Stelter dutifully did his part, insinuating that the accurate report published in the paper founded by Alexander Hamilton, censored by Big Tech, and maligned by a cabal of spies was "fake." "So let's take a look at how a storyline is manufactured," Stelter said at the time. "In this case, a loudly anti-Biden storyline, redounding to Trump's benefit. First, it helps to really view this as story-telling — not so much as news coverage but as political entertainment." 'That's misinformation that you're spreading on my program.' Writing off the Post's censored story as political entertainment, Stelter reassured his viewers that Hunter Biden "has already apologized — well, he's already admitted to poor judgment" and that Joe Biden "has said it would not happen again." After alluding to a previous CNN report that suggested the published emails might be "tied to [a] Russian disinformation effort targeting Biden," Stelter characterized as outlandish the possibility Hunter Biden might have left an incriminating laptop at a Delaware computer shop. Stelter said: The Post claimed that the emails were found on a laptop computer that was brought to a computer shop in Delaware in the spring of 2019; that a shop employee saw the emails and then was worried about getting in trouble or getting in danger, and he made copies of them. There is a lot about this story that does not add up. "For all we know, these emails are made up," said the then-CNN host. "But we do know that this is a classic example of the right-wing media machine." Steele dossier Jerry Dunleavy, a former senior investigator for House Republicans on the Foreign Affairs Committee, recently highlighted an instance in 2017 in which Stelter accused then-White House senior advisor Kellyanne Conway of spreading "misinformation" on his show after she criticized CNN's obsession with the Steele dossier. Blaze News previously reported that the Steele dossier was paid for by Democratic operatives who hired research firm Fusion GPS, which then retained former British spy Christopher Steele, who in turn curated the documents of uncorroborated claims about Trump. "We've got multiple investigations through [special counsel Robert] Mueller, through congressional and Senate committees, and CNN itself has been so hot on Russia, Russia, Russia — on the dossier," said Conway. "CNN's been obsessed with this dossier over a year now. And now that we know the DNC and Clinton campaign paid the same firm for said dossier, which is completely unverified, we can't get you excited." Stelter pounced on Conway, saying, "That's misinformation that you're spreading on my program, and I don't appreciate it." "Pieces of the dossier have been verified, and when you say it's unverified, you actually mislead the American people," said Stelter. Stelter had a similar encounter with conservative radio show host Hugh Hewitt detailed by the Washington Examiner in September 2020 "The primary subsource of the dossier was revealed last week to be a Russian agent investigated by the Obama Department of Justice in 2009 and '10. The dossier is discredited. There was no collusion. These are factual matters. That's my problem with 'Hoax,'" Hewitt told Stelter, referencing the CNN host's book. "I'm reflecting, I'm a media reporter, and I’m not a Steele dossier reporter," said Stelter. "What I know is that when you use the word 'hoax' over and over again the way the president has, it's dangerous and poisonous because it makes people think there's nothing real and nothing true anymore. And that's what I think the problem is." Vaccine skepticism Like countless other talking heads on cable news, Brian Stelter would not tolerate criticism of experimental COVID-19 vaccines during and after the pandemic. 'He's clearly not responsible enough to have a show that purports or pretends to be news.' In a May 2021 monologue, Stelter said, "I've heard Tucker Carlson repeatedly say that many Americans are dying after getting the [COVID] shot. And he says it with the implication that the shots are to blame with no evidence at all. He's scaring his audience so recklessly." Stelter ran a clip showing Carlson criticize mandatory vaccinations and coercive medicine. "Carlson acts like he knows some secret truth that's been covered up by some shadowy enterprise," said Stelter, around the same time the Biden-Harris administration was pressuring social media companies to censor vaccine criticism — censorship Stelter appears to have defended on another occasion. "Maybe you should be writing some junk movie of the week for Netflix or Tubi. Maybe you should go write horror novels for a living, because he's clearly not responsible enough to have a show that purports or pretends to be news." Stelter's comments have aged poorly. After all, at least one vaccine company has admitted its product can cause deadly blood clots. The vaccines Stelter appeared desperate to defend from criticism have also been linked to various ailments, including heart disease, blood clots, hemorrhages, gut issues, thromboses, myocarditis, pericarditis, and autoimmune diseases Dutch researchers noted in a recent peer-reviewed study in BMJ Public Health about how vaccines and containment protocols likely boosted excess mortality that: "Both medical professionals and citizens have reported serious injuries and deaths following vaccination to various official databases in the Western World, such as VAERS in the USA, EudraVigilance in the European Union and Yellow Card Scheme in the UK." Months after Stelter suggested that Carlson was not booking the right people or seeking the right answers, he ran a segment with a censor from a Biden-allied narrative curation outfit discussing "how 'do your own research' leads to misinformation." Tren de Aragua members with ties to Colorado apartment takeovers arrested, police say

The Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office confirmed Tuesday that four suspected transnational gang members were arrested in connection with Tren de Aragua's alleged takeover of an Aurora, Colorado, apartment complex.Authorities told KDVR that six people were arrested this week at the Ivy Crossing Apartments. They are reportedly facing "a variety of charges" related to drugs and vehicle theft. Four of the detained individuals are suspected members of the violent Venezuelan gang.'We developed a plan.'Arapahoe County Sheriff Tyler Brown told KDVR, "We're looking for any violation that we can stop and make contact with somebody and addressing the issues that they might have."Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security joined forces with the sheriff's office to conduct proactive patrol around the apartment complex on August 21. As a result, the agencies seized one stolen vehicle, ketamine, and 750 counterfeit pills."There had been some conversation that there were some things going on in our jurisdiction and we developed a plan," Brown told the news outlet. It is currently unclear how the four individuals are connected to Tren de Aragua.Last week, KDVR shared a video of five men armed with guns storming through Edge at Lowry, another apartment complex in Aurora. A separate video captured a man using a hammer to break a deadbolt lock on an apartment door in the same complex.Former residents Cindy and Edward Romero warned that the area had turned into a hotspot for TDA gang activity after illegal immigrants started to move into the complex. They called living at the apartment "a nightmare," noting that their vehicle was riddled with bullet holes due to a shootout that occurred last month.Along with locals, Aurora City Council member Danielle Jurinsky has sounded the alarm about the increased gang presence in the area, blaming the uptick in criminal activity on neighboring Denver's sanctuary policies that have prompted illegal aliens to spill over into Aurora."In the entire Denver metro area, it has been like pulling teeth to get anyone, the media, other elected officials, to get anyone to acknowledge the presence of this trend and to acknowledge that there is even a problem," Jurinsky recently told Fox News Digital.Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, a Democrat, has claimed that the TDA invasion is largely a figment of Jurinksy's "imagination," Blaze News previously reported."The governor has already let the mayor know that the state is ready to support the local police department with assistance from state troopers and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation if needed," a spokesperson for the governor recently told the New York Post. "But according to police intelligence, this purported invasion is largely a feature of Danielle Jurinsky's imagination."Local law enforcement has contended that TDA's influence in the area is "isolated," despite reports that the gang has managed to take over several apartment complexes.Like Blaze News?
