Micro apartments seem to be the wave of the future. These tiny apartments are built inside existing shopping malls to utilize excess and unleased retail space. There are currently 192 malls with conversion plans in motion. Most plans maintain retail and restaurant spaces on the ground floor and incorporate apartments into the upper floors. The Arcade Mall in Providence, Rhode Island, has apartments on the second and third floors. @cnbc CNBC’s Gabrielle Fonrouge reports on a growing trend of developers converting shopping #malls into #apartment buildings. Dozens of tenants now live there, and real estate investors have bought other units to rent on Airbnb. The mall’s first floor has restaurants and retail stores, with micro lofts upstairs. Most of the tiny apartments range from 225 to 775 square feet. The apartments have the charm of a tiny home with the convenience of a mall. Many of the smaller units come fully furnished and move-in ready. While this type of minimalist living might not be perfect for everyone, those renting these micro apartments seem to love the versatility. The units don’t have a stove but have a small refrigerator and microwave. Most tenants are content to eat in restaurants on the ground floor. Image from TikTok. Although not ideal for everyone, these mall apartments provide excellent living spaces for young, single people with active lifestyles. They can also be a perfect fit for an elderly person in good health wishing to downsize. Community spaces include lounges where residents can gather or entertain guests. Laundry facilities are also on the ground floor for residents to use. Old shopping malls have been suggested as senior living apartments. For seniors in good health, they offer many amenities on the main concourse while affording independence. An excerpt from Selco’s 4th Anthology (NEW!) I have read about Hurricane Helene, the government response, and folks dying and suffering there…and I read about it weeks and months after all that happened. It did not catch my attention until someone pointed that to me. I do agree it is very far from me, but still, as I call myself a survivalist, I might read about it earlier. Anyway. It might be a good example to illustrate a couple of thoughts in this article that you need to memorize. You are alone It is like that saying (or joke) when a soldier, after months of training and mentally and patriotically preparing about what war is about and why he needs to fight in that war, finally, in the middle of battle, understands it and says loudly, “OMG, they trying to kill me”. In essence, it is about staying alive. And no matter what they say to you, when tough times come, it is about YOU, YOUR preparation, and what YOU built for survival. When the SHTF happens, there are (generalized) or there might be two cases: It is a localized bad event It is huge (state or even worldwide event) For us here in this article first case is important. If it is a very bad event, you may expect that even if the world is still normally turning around outside of the area of SHTF, you are going to spend some time alone with what you prepared until help arrives. Depending on the event, it may pass days, weeks, or even months until help arrives. So, you may listen on the radio to how the world lives normally outside while you are suffering hunger and waterborne illness 50 miles from them. In today’s sick world, you can expect even a media blackout about your localized SHTF event because the government responded badly (and they do not want the public to know about it) or even because they partially caused the event (bad nature governing, local chemical spills, malfunction of plants, bad security…) The point here is that even if the event is localized, it still can be like the end of a world situation for you, with a lack of water, food, electricity, absence of law…for weeks. It is still real life and death. And always keep in mind the hypocrisy of government or ruling forces, no matter where and how modern your society is. The world today and help from outside I strongly believe that we are living in a world where we are conditioned (often, I think deliberately) to be bombarded with streaks of fast and irrelevant news, or in other words, to be dependent on flashy news. You and your event (localized SHTF) are only short, flashy news. Ruined houses, bodies on the street, a news reporter who looks “worried” with a hard hat or helmet on his head (depending on the event) interviewing someone who lost his family member as he “juices” from that person’s statements of sorrow that will make news more “flashy.” When the camera goes off, the guy who lost his wife in the hurricane will stay alone again. Reporters will go away to some other flashy event, and the majority of folks in front of the TVs, laptops, or cell phones will look for some other news. Folks in the area of the event will continue to suffer, even if help from outside arrives, because government machinery is, for a long time, too slow, too corrupted, and too much geared toward itself and not to the people who are in need. What I am trying to say is even if you are in the middle of the SHTF in a very localized event, where the outside world is functioning, you are just short news on the TV for numerous reasons, nothing more. You are surviving localized horrible weather events, not worldwide nuclear war, but you still need to count only on yourself and your preps and people only close to you for some time. Keep that in mind when you say to yourself “I am not preparing for civil war, I am preparing for couple days of bad weather event where help is couple of days away. Personal note On a personal note…I remember the time when I acquired batteries for my small portable FM radio. There I was, in a very cold room, hungry, with diarrhea for days because I did not boil collected water, and the sounds of shellings around me. I turned on the radio and listened for 20 minutes to the news from a neighboring state. It was mostly regular news, weather, politic stuff, even some celebrity’s death. And at the end, there was a one-minute statement where European politicians expressed their “deep worry” about the situation with civil war in my country. One minute and deep worry and nothing else. The world outside keeps turning, people live, kids go to school, families buy cars, go on holidays…and most of them do not even know the name of my region, not to mention what is happening there. But at least the guys who rule are “deeply worried.” You may say it was a long time ago, and it was a drastic example – civil war. You are right, but I would say to you that today people even more do not give f*ck about what is happening. We have that bombardment of irrelevant news, celebs showing their butts on Instagram. We are glued to TikTok flashes and FB  arguments. We are (well, most of us) ignorant idiots. So, take care of yourself, build a network close to you, prepare locally, and do not trust the system. Each day Republican leadership debates about how, and when, to proceed with the budget reconciliation process is another day the American people are forced to wait for President Donald Trump’s agenda to kick into high gear.  Americans need our leaders to act with the urgency that this moment demands. The safety and security of Americans must be placed first. The No. 1 priority for Congress right now must be to ensure that every illegal alien who has invaded our country is detained and deported or leaves quickly on their own accord. Trump’s team, led by border czar Tom Homan, is ready to do its job. During Trump’s first term, Immigration and Customs Enforcement removed illegal aliens at a rate of 32% of the aggregate number of encounters, but that rate fell to 3.5% under President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.  Congress now needs to throw its full support behind the administration so that they can track, arrest, detain, and deport all 20 million illegal aliens that the American people elected Trump to evict.  Conducting the largest deportation operation in American history will require Congress to take more action—and provide ICE with funds on a historic scale.  Implementing Trump’s plan will require ICE to have at least 100,000 detention beds, 12,000 more ICE agents, 4,000 more Office of the Principal Legal Advisor attorneys, 1,000 Executive Office for Immigration Review immigration judges, and 1,000 ICE mission support staff to help expand air operations and handle higher levels of turnover in deportation facilities.  Democrats will try to make the price tag seem like too high a cost to pay, but in the past four years they have spent billions on nongovernmental organizations to facilitate bringing millions of illegal aliens here. Repurposing NGO funds for immigration enforcement and cutting state and federal welfare subsidies for illegal aliens will save Americans even more money annually.  Plus, America’s sovereignty and every American life is priceless. If any representative disagrees, then Heritage Action is going to make sure that they explain why to their constituents.  In addition to funding ICE on a historic scale, Congress also has a crucial role to play when it comes to putting pressure on illegal aliens to self-deport. A good place to start would be cracking down on employers who hire illegal aliens instead of paying Americans an honest wage.  Requiring businesses to use an electronic verification system to confirm their employees’ work eligibility would largely fix this problem, but if some illegal aliens slipped through the cracks, Congress has still more tools at its disposal. An unused tool is Congress’ ability to tax remittances, the money illegal aliens earn in America and then send back to their home country. According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform, our country loses more than $150 billion annually in remittances—which is roughly equivalent to the annual output of America’s entire mining industry (excluding oil and gas).  To disincentivize illegal aliens from remaining here, Congress should pass a law that requires money transfer services to demand proof of legal status or face a 50% tax on any outgoing transfers. This tax revenue can then be repurposed toward deportation operations or finishing the border wall.  Another tool that would save Americans money and incentivize illegal aliens to leave our country is Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Rep. Chip Roy’s, R-Texas, America First Act, which would permanently prevent aliens from accessing America’s welfare benefits.  Last year, the Center for Immigration Studies estimated that illegal aliens received $42 billion in benefits paid for by American taxpayers in 2021 alone. Since then, the Biden administration has allowed millions more illegal aliens into our country, which means that figure has almost certainly increased. In July 2024, the Congressional Budget Office released a score finding that the Biden administration’s failure to secure the border will increase America’s debt to the tune of $300 billion over the next 10 years because of alien access to federal welfare programs. And this doesn’t even account for the billions in taxpayer dollars that go to support the tremendous burden illegal immigrants put on other state and local resources like public schools. With that in mind, Congress should also require school districts to collect enrollment data by immigration status and pass legislation that requires public schools to charge tuition for illegal alien children. Finally, Congress should pass a law that requires American banks to confirm an applicant’s legal status before issuing a home loan. No illegal alien should be able to live out the American dream of owning a home when so many of our fellow citizens can hardly afford to pay the rent. If aliens can’t get a job, can’t send money back to their families, can’t access welfare, can’t send their children to schools for free, and can’t buy a home, then many of them will leave on their own. This will make ICE’s job easier and save Americans even more money. Republicans in Congress loved to beat the drum for border security and mass deportation when they were raising money on the campaign trail.
