Nearly one month after several parts of Los Angeles were engulfed in flames, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed two California bills into law allocating $50 million to fight the Trump administration’s agenda, especially on illegal immigration. Amid the ongoing relief efforts in Southern California, some residents are expressing their displeasure with the governor’s move. Greg Burt, vice president of the California Family Council, told The Washington Stand, “Gov. Newsom’s decision to spend $50 million of taxpayer funds on lawsuits against federal immigration policies and legal services for illegal immigrants demonstrates a reckless disregard for California families. Scott Wiener, were passed to “Trump-proof” the state. The first bill, SBX1-1, allows the state’s Department of Justice to receive $25 million in additional funding for legal challenges against federal policy and actions of the Trump administration. The second, SBX1-2, issues $25 million toward general fund resources for “immigration and legal aid services.” The bill’s primary objective is to provide legal aid to illegal immigrants facing deportation. According to the summary of the bill text, the legislation has four specific allocations or stipulations that apply: “Appropriates $10 million to the Legal Services Trust Fund to provide legal services to vulnerable persons at risk of detention, deportation, eviction, wage theft, intimate partner violence, and other actions that put their safety at risk, as a result of potential or actual federal action.” “Adds $10 million to the Immigration Services Funding program (also called ‘One California program’) at the Department of Social Services for immigration services funding.” “Increases $5 million to the Judicial Council, to be distributed through the California Access to Justice Commission to nonprofit providers of legal services.” “Specifies that up to 2.5% of funding provided for each item in this bill can be used for administrative expenses and requires reporting to the Joint Legislative Budget Committee.” Wiener spoke out against the Trump administration last month. “California faces two massive challenges,” he stated while first highlighting the hurdle of recovery from the “horrific destructive wildfires in Los Angeles.” The second obstacle Wiener labeled was “an incoming federal administration that has vowed to make it harder for Los Angeles to recover by withholding disaster relief and deporting immigrant Angelenos who have been impacted by the fires and who are actively helping their neighbors.” When he met with Trump in Washington, D.C., the governor called the discussion “incredibly productive and constructive.” But it didn’t escape people’s attention that Newsom seemingly waited until after meeting with President Trump earlier this month to sign the bills into law. After adding his signature to both pieces of legislation, Newsom claimed the funding wouldn’t help illegal immigrants “convicted of serious or violent felonies,” but the bill’s verbiage says otherwise. In fact, $10 million is granted explicitly to organizations that “provide immigration-related services, including removal defense.” As the controversy over the governor’s agenda swirls, Burt pointed people to Romans 13:1-2, which says, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore, whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.” Burt emphasized that in our federalist system of government, Newsom is subject to the authority of federal law. He added, “California has an obligation to uphold federal law, not undermine it. Taxpaying, law-abiding citizens should not be forced to pay for legal assistance to help individuals stay in the country illegally while their own families struggle to afford basic needs. Instead of funding political battles, Newsom should focus on helping struggling Californians—especially in the wake of rising living costs, crime, and natural disasters.” Burt also pointed out that California families should receive higher priority than illegal immigrants: “Just as parents have a God-given responsibility to provide for their children before considering the needs of others (1 Timothy 5:8), a government’s first duty is to its own people.” He added that protecting its citizens and enforcing its laws should be the primary priorities of the U.S. government: “The United States, like any sovereign nation, has a right and a responsibility to protect its citizens, enforce its laws, and ensure that resources are used to support those who contribute legally to society. Yet, Gov. Newsom is diverting millions of dollars to shield those who break immigration laws while ignoring Californians who struggle with high taxes, unsafe communities, and failing schools. Every country prioritizes its own people first—why should America be the exception?” In the wake of the Southern California fires, there is growing frustration among local families over the governor’s priorities. “Newsom’s decision to sign these bills is not just bad timing—it reveals his warped priorities,” Burt told The Washington Stand. “While families in Southern California are left homeless from devastating wildfires, Newsom is diverting $50 million in taxpayer funds to wage war against the Trump administration instead of using those funds to help Californians rebuild their lives. On the PBS show “Washington Week with The Atlantic” on Feb. 7, host Jeffrey Goldberg began: “Elon Musk, the unelected, unconfirmed, unofficial, but extremely powerful prime minister of the United States, is carrying out his plan to purge thousands of employees from the federal government.” A few minutes later, National Public Radio reporter Asma Khalid talked about Musk “increasing starvation rates.” Atlantic staff writer Anne Applebaum wondered, “Are Americans willing to accept a high level of cruelty and death just, you know, on the president’s whim, on Elon Musk’s whim?” There are several ironies here. First, no one elected anyone at PBS as they punish any limit on government. Second, an unelected billionaire named Laurene Powell Jobs owns The Atlantic, which completed a friendly takeover of the “Washington Week” show in August 2023. Jobs, one of Kamala Harris’ biggest bankrollers and confidantes, isn’t alone. David Rubenstein has bought himself several chat shows on PBS. As long as you’re a progressive billionaire, no one in “public” broadcasting objects—and nobody inside their bubble cares about conservative taxpayers if and when they object to funding this ideological boondoggle. Maxwell Tani at Semafor reported Jobs recently hosted a Democrat strategy session at the Washington, D.C., headquarters of her Emerson Collective. He began: “After months of licking their wounds and reflecting on how they lost the internet, Democratic strategists and politically-aligned digital creators are privately planning their next steps.” How interesting it is that an unelected billionaire who bought a show on PBS is right at the center of “fixing” Democrat Party messaging. PBS and the Democrats are hand in glove. Tani added, “The summit was also an opportunity to connect several of the party’s prominent financial supporters with some of the liberal media organizations that are positioning themselves as vessels to help liberals regain digital ground they’ve lost to the right in recent years.” Musk even drew a mention in Tani’s dispatch: “The initial shock of the presidential loss has been heightened by other frustrations among Democrats at their party’s superficially slow and unsatisfying response to Trump and Musk’s shock-and awe-changes to the federal government.” Unlike the infamous Elon, you can’t really find much mention on PBS for Laurene Powell Jobs in this decade. On the Jan. 19, 2024, “PBS News Hour,” David Brooks mentioned he wrote opinions for wealthy owners of The Atlantic and The New York Times. Jonathan Capehart noted he writes for the Jeff Bezos-owned Washington Post. The leftist take on billionaires came as PBS lamented the Los Angeles Times and The Baltimore Sun were insufficiently liberal. Capehart explained, “What the Post, the Times and The Atlantic have in common is that they are mission-driven. And it seems to me that The Baltimore Sun and The L.A. Times … that the owners are status-driven. And when you have mission-driven owners, they let the journalists do the journalism.” That’s odd. If anyone thinks journalists like Capehart aren’t “status-driven,” they haven’t seen them on the Washington, D.C., social scene, energetically circling to get a mention on the Politico Playbook or other gossip columns. Hence, the natural order of things is that billionaires buy media properties and let the unelected left-wing journalists dictate what they want the “news” to be, which is whatever helps Democrats “regain ground” in the opinion battles. This is the nature of what they call “the swamp.” If you get along and go along with the progressives, you can be a respectable citizen. Flights were suspended at Gaziantep Airport, Istanbul, Turkey on Monday night after pilots reported a luminous, unidentified flying object (UFO), reports turkiyetoday.com. At around 10:00 p.m. local time (GMT+3), pilots of an aircraft reported spotting a bright, unidentified object at an altitude of approximately 8,000 to 10,000 feet. UFO alert in Türkiye’s 6th biggest city led to a brief chaos at the airport. Gaziantep is located in southeastern Türkiye, near the Syrian border. The object, which did not appear on radar, was reported to air traffic control, prompting authorities to halt flights as a precaution. Following the suspension, authorities conducted investigations in and around the airport. After confirming no immediate threat, flights resumed approximately three hours later. Investigations are ongoing, with officials considering the possibility that the object might have been a drone. Seperately, on January 29, pilots using Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen Airport, Istanbul, Turkey received traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) warnings, prompting an extensive search in the region. However, authorities have been unable to determine the source of these alerts. Upon receiving the warnings, pilots immediately informed air traffic controllers, leading to coordinated search efforts in the air, at sea, and on land. While some pilots speculated that the alerts could be caused by a drone or a ship at sea, search teams found no conclusive evidence. Radio transmissions between pilots and air traffic control revealed the urgency of the situation. One pilot reported: “On final approach at 300 feet, we received a traffic alert. It could be a drone or another aircraft. For your information.” The control tower’s response indicated that similar warnings had been reported earlier: “Sir, we have been dealing with this for the past two and a half hours. The left is screaming that President Donald Trump is on some kind of ideological crusade. Some recent headlines: “Trump and Musk’s Purge Isn’t Cost Cutting -- It’s a Coup”; “Doge is About Ideology and Mindless Budget Cutting”; “Elon Musk’s Indiscriminate Carnage”; “Dems Must Stand Up Against the Bully in the White House.” It’s sort of like labeling a company CEO ideological because he is driven to keep his company profitable and competitive. One column in The Guardian says Trump is “lacerating the structures of U.S. democracy.” In other words, protecting taxpayers and running the country efficiently is anti-democratic. But forgiving $189 billion of student loan debt -- done under Biden -- and dumping it all on taxpayers is not. Or government spending trillions and larding it all onto the federal debt rather than raising taxes is not. The Congressional Budget Office just issued its latest 10-year outlook, and it is not a pretty picture regarding today’s economic realities of the nation. It forecasts that the federal debt will grow from 100% of GDP in 2025 to 118% of GDP by 2035, the highest in American history. CBO forecasts GDP growth over this same 10-year period to average 1.8% per year. It is not ideology to point out that this is pathetic and dangerous. It’s about one-half the 3.5% per year that the U.S. economy grew over the half century from 1950 to 2000. Hoover Institution economist John Cochrane has pointed out that if the U.S. economy grew 2% per year from 1950 to 2000 instead of 3.5% per year, per capita income would have been less than half what it was in 2000. Ideology is about words -- slogans with no reality check. Business is about numbers, measurement and performance. The failure of socialism, the failure of societies with oversized intrusive government and the failure of ideas like social justice falling into the realm of politics is politicians seize more and more power and take less and less responsibility. When government expands at the expense of individual freedom, productivity and creativity suffer, and economic growth shrinks. These are not words. They are quantitative results. In a recent Pew Research survey, 74% of Americans said they feel that our children will be worse off financially than their parents. These are Americans living in a country with government bigger and more intrusive than that of their forebears. The Fraser Institute in Vancouver, Canada, publishes annually an Economic Freedom of the World report. Fraser measures economic freedom in 165 countries around the world. For every country, they measure the size of government, the extent of regulation, the extent to which the legal system works to protect personal freedom and private property, the extent to which every country is careful to not debase its national currency, and the extent to which it allows citizens and firms to trade freely internationally. Every nation is quantitively scored in each of these areas and given a score for overall economic freedom. The top 25% of countries in overall economic freedom scores have average per capita income -- $52,777 -- 7.6 times higher than average per capita income of the lowest 25% -- $6,968. These are numbers, measurements, performance. Not ideology. It’s much harder to diet and lose weight than to overeat and get fat. It’s much harder to sober up than to drink in excess. But every individual, every country, sooner or later, must deal with reality. Our country has lost its way. Those on the left who are verbally assaulting the new Trump administration are the ideologues. They are in love with empty words and bankrupt ideas. Fortunately, we now have tough and courageous leadership willing to do the very hard work of getting a great country that has lost its way back on track. The company dropped AI features for Notepad a few months back, and now it’s prompting users to pay for a Microsoft 365 subscription to use AI features like Rewrite. For over four decades, Notepad has been a reliable, no-nonsense text editor you could just open when you needed to jot something down without the corporate upsell. But Microsoft couldn’t resist as it started throwing more AI features into Windows, it eventually brought them to Notepad, too. At first, folks were happy. Notepad had become an even more viable application, right? Yes, the core Notepad functions remain free, and yes, you can still type away without disruption. But the moment you venture into AI-powered territory? Better break out the credit card. It really isn't a surprise to see this, either. Microsoft was always kind of clear that Rewrite would require one of its AI subscriptions. However, the way the company has approached the entire situation is a bit bizarre. Some people insist these prompts to buy into Notepad’s AI features (and others like them) aren’t ads, but let’s be real: what else do you call a disruptive banner telling you to subscribe to something? Notepad now follows the same playbook Microsoft has used to sneak ads and AI into the Start menu, File Explorer, and every other part of its operating system. The good news is Notepad still works without a Microsoft account, so you don’t have to worry about it unless you want to use Rewrite. That’s locked behind “AI credits,” which is basically Microsoft’s way of saying, “subscribe to Microsoft 365.” Which, to be fair, Microsoft gave everyone 50 credits to try Rewrite out when it first launched. But, even if you didn't use them, it looks like those credits have magically "expired" now. The company sees Rewrite and other AI features as “bonus features” rather than as core functions of its apps, and that’s definitely fair. But the optics aren’t great if the prompts in Notepad are causing this much confusion. Especially when you consider that Microsoft just hiked the price for Microsoft 365.
