EU Party Pushes Back Against Gaming Companies Shutting Down Games People Have Paid For

If you';re tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net.Not even most of those people lucky enough to have grown up along with the gaming industry (and associated software and hardware breakthroughs) often wonder‚ what happens to video game classics when they get put out to pasture?More importantly‚ how does that happen‚ why‚ who decides and can anything be done to keep these orphaned (i.e.‚ no longer actively developed‚ supported‚ and eventually‚ sold) pieces of software still around? The Pirate Party‚ which is miraculously enough represented in the European Parliament (EP) from several member countries‚ is asking exactly that question.Lately‚ the EP Pirates has been prominently involving itself in broader issues of internet privacy and security. But with the latest initiative to get the EU Commission (of all things) to provide an opinion about the legality under EU consumer protection law regarding Ubisoft deciding to kill the The Crew 1 game as of this April this political grouping seems to be revisiting its roots. The gaming community is rallying against the increasing trend of publishers rendering video games unplayable by shutting down their servers‚ a practice exemplified by the recent closure of Ubisofts decade-old racing game.In the end‚ it comes down to proprietary vs. open-source software. There would never be the need for the Pirate Parties‚ or the Stop Killing Games to bring up these issues if the code was open. After all‚ the free and open source status is what allows for the longevity of the most important single piece of software that is the backbone of the entire global internet the Linux kernel. But back to strictly gaming and German MEP Patrick Breyer writes‚ the shutdown of The Crew 1 by Ubisoft is an alarming example of how gamers interests are being ignored. It is unacceptable and probably also illegal for companies to first sell popular games at a profit and then kill them at short notice. The video gaming industry has for some years now been bigger‚ in terms of revenue‚ than the film industry. Other than what this means to those collecting that revenue there is also the cultural impact of an entertainment and art form that reaches so many people around the globe.Technically‚ its comparing apples and oranges but essentially‚ it isnt. So how would you feel if Citizen Kane or Blade Runner suddenly disappeared off the face of the Earth?Speaking of the latter it took decades for the movie to gain its rightful status as a classic. But what if it never had that time? This is another issue that killing off games brings up.And so‚ Breyer writes Pirates demand a legal framework that prevents orphaned software from simply disappearing. The community should have the opportunity to take orphaned software over and develop it further. This policy also promotes sustainability‚ for example by allowing control routines for hardware to be maintained and updated‚ which increases the service life of the devices. The post EU Party Pushes Back Against Gaming Companies Shutting Down Games People Have Paid For appeared first on Reclaim The Net.

10 Pivotal Events in the Life of Buffalo Bill

1.Cody Family Moves to Kansas Will was born in Iowa Territory in 1846. In 1854 father Isaac moved the family to Kansas Territory in search of a better life. There young Will watched a wagon train embarking on the Oregon Trail and declared that was what he wanted to do. Three years later‚ at age 11‚ he did just that with a freighting operation. It was the first of many such trips. 2.Will Meets the Kickapoos Young Codys earliest encounters with American Indians were with Kickapoos who did business at his fathers trading post. Will also befriended Kickapoo classmates. Such positive encounters informed the way he approached Indians the rest of his life. 3.Family Opposition to Slavery Isaac Cody opposed allowing slavery in Kansas Territory and was stabbed in 1854 while speaking against it. Pro-slavers continued to persecute the family until Isaacs death three years later. Will regarded his father as a martyr and idolized his mother for having persevered. Following their examples‚ he later championed equal rights for women and Indians. 4.Riding With the Pony Express Just what role Cody played in the Pony Express is open for debate‚ but it was important enough to him to emphasize in his 1879 autobiography‚ by which time the mail service was but a memory. It might have remained a footnote in American history had Cody not promoted it in every performance of Buffalo Bills Wild West over a 30-year span. 5.Becoming Buffalo Bill In 1867‚ during a hiatus as a scout for the U.S. Army‚ Cody landed a contract to supply bison meat for work crews on the Kansas Pacific Railway. He proved such an adept hunter that the workers bestowed on him the nickname Buffalo Bill. Cody engaged in real-life adventures as a U.S. Army scout.6.A Taste of the Good Life After fulfilling his contract with the railroad‚ Buffalo Bill returned to scouting for the Army. In January 1872 he led a hunt for Lt. Gen. Phil Sheridan in honor of Russian Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich. Among the guests were wealthy New Yorkers who introduced Cody to gourmet dining‚ something hed enjoy the rest of his life. Within weeks he traveled to Manhattan‚ where he dined at Delmonicos‚ stayed in fine hotels‚ partied with millionaires and took in several plays. 7.Taking the Stage One of the plays Cody went to see while in New York was Buffalo Bill‚ King of the Border Men‚ at the Bowery Theater. He attended with Ned Buntline‚ who wrote the dime novel series on which the play was based. At Buntlines urging‚ Cody embarked on an acting career that December. 8.Birth of Buffalo Bills Wild West After a decade onstage Cody reflected‚ Immense success and comparative wealth‚ attained in the profession of showman‚ stimulated me to greater exertion and largely increased my ambition for public favor. That ambition led to his most successful enterprise. Beginning in 1883‚ Buffalo Bills Wild West introduced the regions people‚ animals and stories first to all Americans and then to the world. The show transformed Cody into historys first international celebrity. 9.Buffalo Bill Conquers EuropeIn 1887 Cody was invited to bring his Wild West to London and perform as part of Victorias Golden Jubilee‚ celebrating her half century as Britains queen. Afterward‚ Buffalo Bill toured the Continent with his troupe‚ introducing Europeans to the American West. In each nation tens of thousands of curious spectators flocked to the celebrated showmans arena performances. 10.Worlds Columbian Exposition Codys success in Europe only boosted his status at home. Back Stateside he planned a grand homecoming at Chicagos 1893 Worlds Columbian Exposition‚ but its aloof organizers denied the showman a place on their grounds. For nearly a year the Wild West performed just outside the main gate‚ drawing far larger crowds18‚000 people to each of its two daily shows. Buffalo Bill left the Windy City a millionaire with a legacy extending beyond his own lifetime.
