Definitely wasn’t expecting that collab. Morgan Wallen dropped his latest album, I’m The Problem, this past Friday, and it’s safe to say the album has been a massive hit. Within 12 hours of the album coming out it was already the most-streamed country album of the entire year. Songs from I’m The Problem currently occupy 7 of the top 50 spots on Apple Music’s all-genre chart, with all 37 reaching the top 50 after it was released, and the album is no doubt going to be at #1 on the Billboard Hot 200 album chart when it comes out later this week. I’ll be honest, I haven’t listened to much of it yet (although I do like the song with Eric Church), but it seems like one of the tracks that’s getting the most attention is “Miami.” Morgan teased the song ahead of the album’s release as a “rap version” of Keith Whitley’s classic “Miami, My Amy,” which obviously got a lot of attention and had plenty of country music traditionalists (ourselves included) up in arms and bracing for a bastardization of a classic song. And sure enough, that’s pretty much what we got. The only real part of the original song that they kept was an autotuned “Miami” in the chorus, and other than that it’s pretty much unrecognizable as being an interpolation of the Keith Whitley original. But one thing people did recognize was the voice singing in the chorus…well, at least they think they recognize it, because apparently social media thinks it sounds like Alvin & the Chipmunks. Of course Morgan knew the song was going to be controversial with country music fans, telling Apple Music that he’s a big fan of Keith Whitley and happy with how it turned out: “I mean, we’re from a similar area, I grew up listening to bluegrass. I think that in and of itself just makes me love him, I just think he’s the pure best vocalist in country music, ever. I think that’s really all there is to it. And I love the sadness and heartbreak that was in his songs. Obviously, it seems like he was in a lot of pain, and I seem to empathize with people like that. And then you throw his vocal, and those songs, on top of it, it’s just incredible. You said something about ‘Miami,’ I already know I’m gonna get crucified for that song, but I don’t know… it is fun, and I enjoyed it, and me and the boys writing it had a good time writing it. In my own way, I’m not gonna do a Keith Whitley cover, probably. I don’t feel right doing that… this is my own way of paying my respect. And if that offends people, I don’t really care, but I’m gonna assume it will.” No wonder he’s so happy about it.
