Millions of Birds Now Migrating Safely Through Darkened Texas Cities After Successful Lights Out Campaign

Texas is in the middle of the most important migratory pathway for birds moving up and down the Americas—nearly 2 billion birds‚ or 1 out of 3 in the US‚ will pass over Texas during their spring and autumn migrations. To safeguard the over 400 species of birds that migrate through Texas‚ the Houston chapter […] The post Millions of Birds Now Migrating Safely Through Darkened Texas Cities After Successful Lights Out Campaign appeared first on Good News Network.

Bank of America Accused of Political Debanking

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. Bank of America is facing serious accusations of involvement in discrimination based on politics‚ religion‚ and ideology (i.e.‚ speech expressing this)‚ with the targets of “debanking” allegedly being some Christian churches as well as supporters of Donald Trump. These suspicions are expressed by over a dozen attorney-generals from Republican states who are behind a letter sent to Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan‚ looking for answers – and documents – related to the accusations. The initiative follows revelations that Bank of America was turning over financial data belonging to clients to the FBI and the Treasury‚ as they investigated January 6 suspects. Kansas AG Kris Kobach is leading the effort now‚ which centers on clarifying‚ by providing the relevant documents‚ the policy based on which the bank cancels some accounts. AGs from Alaska‚ Arkansas‚ Indiana‚ Iowa‚ Mississippi‚ Missouri‚ Montana‚ Nebraska‚ South Carolina‚ Texas‚ and Utah also signed the letter. Another point made in it is that the bank’s policies must be updated to make sure that going forward‚ clients don’t continue to be discriminated against because of their politics or religion. According to Kobach‚ the bank is imposing its own “preferred” political and religious stances when allowing clients access to services. “Your discriminatory behavior is a serious threat to free speech and religious freedom‚ is potentially illegal‚ and is causing political and regulatory backlash‚” reads the letter. Kobach and the co-signers warned that Bank of America must assure both them and its shareholders in a transparent way that clients will no longer be “debanked” simply because of their opinions and beliefs. The letter was first reported in the Daily Mail‚ which managed to get a reaction from the bank‚ which denied it was considering religious belief when deciding to close somebody’s account. To prove this point‚ a representative said that “non-profit organizations affiliated with diverse faith communities” are happily served by the bank. However‚ that does not mean that everyone “qualifies.” As the letter penned by the AGs states‚ when one of those affected‚ the Timothy Two Project International Christian ministry group was targeted‚ Bank of America said the account was closed because this client was “operating a business type we have chosen not to service.” And when the same decision was taken regarding the account of Servants of Christ‚ the explanation being it was “the wrong business type.” The practice of debaking‚ the letter continued‚ means that Bank of America is “opening itself up to potential legal liability under consumer protection and anti-discrimination laws‚ and creating substantial regulatory and political risk from states that are already taking action to stop debanking.” The post Bank of America Accused of Political Debanking appeared first on Reclaim The Net.

X Says “Anti-Misinformation” Agency Spreading Falsehoods Caused “Incalculable” Damage

If you're tired of censorship and dystopian threats against civil liberties‚ subscribe to Reclaim The Net. DoubleVerify‚ which says it is in the business of helping brands advertise more effectively while focusing on “transparency and authenticity” has caused X to lose a number of advertisers because it rated the platform’s “brand safety” erroneously. The factual false information that DoubleVerify published to the world‚ all the while supposedly working to tackle misinformation‚ has to do with what the company said was “a graphical error in the display of X’s Brand Safety Rate in DV’s Pinnacle dashboard.” This error continued to be displayed for four and a half months‚ showing a false‚ lower rate‚ admitted CEO Mark Zegorski. The DoubleVerify CEO went on to say they took “full responsibility” and apologized‚ also revealing that the brand safety rate enjoyed by X “across all campaigns” the company measured “exceeded 99.99%.” The damage done in this way is described by X Corp’s Business Operations chief Joe Benarroch as being “incalculable.” According to him‚ dozens of firms justified their decision to pull out of advertising on X referring to DoubleVerify’s rating. This started happening after Elon Musk acquired then Twitter – while previously‚ those same brands had no problem advertising when the platform had a “politically liberal CEO.” This was the case even though‚ according to Benarroch‚ Twitter had “little to no” brand safety capabilities before the Musk takeover‚ and that as much as 90% of those capabilities were built afterward. The context of all this becomes even more interesting considering that the demand for DoubleVerify’s services (and resulting huge revenues) stems from the likes of the controversial Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM‚ currently investigated by the House Judiciary Committee) “normalizing” the notion that companies must not advertise if a platform is found guilty of “misinformation.” This has spawned a whole industry of third-party “raters” who are often criticized as using their role and influence to push a certain – namely‚ left-leaning – political agenda‚ that results in conservative media‚ but also those that are center-right‚ as well as “disobedient” social platforms‚ losing sometimes vital ad revenue. DoubleVerify’s in 2020 bragged that it was the first to harmonize its product with the rules pushed not only by GARM (an initiative of the World Federation of Advertisers with links to the World Economic Forum) but also by the 4A’s Advertising Protection Bureau (APB). Vaccine Breakthrough Could Mean Future-Proof Shots With No Need For Boosters

A new vaccine platform could see us waving goodbye to boosters for some diseases‚ as one shot could cover every possible future strain of a virus. So far‚ it’s only been tested out in mice‚ but the scientists behind it are optimistic.“This could be the universal vaccine that we have been looking for‚” said Rong Hai‚ a virologist at the University of California‚ Riverside‚ in a statement. The vaccine uses a live‚ attenuated version of the virus. Lots of existing vaccines‚ like the MMR and chickenpox vaccines‚ use a similar method. Unlike those‚ however‚ the new vaccines will not rely on the body’s immune system mounting a response to the injected virus. Instead‚ they will activate a system called RNA interference‚ or RNAi.It sounds a bit similar to the mRNA vaccines we've been using for COVID-19‚ but the way it works is quite different. “A host – a person‚ a mouse‚ anyone infected – will produce small interfering RNAs as an immune response to viral infection. These RNAi then knock down the virus‚” explained lead author Shouwei Ding‚ distinguished professor of microbiology. Viruses are generally able to get around this response by producing proteins that block the RNAi‚ but weakening the virus first overcomes this problem. “It can replicate to some level‚ but then loses the battle to the host RNAi response. A virus weakened in this way can be used as a vaccine for boosting our RNAi immune system‚” Ding said. And mutating won’t save them either. “Viruses may mutate in regions not targeted by traditional vaccines. However‚ we are targeting their whole genome with thousands of small RNAs‚” Hai added. “They cannot escape this.”It's worth noting that the idea that RNAi can form part of humans' defense against viral infection has caused controversy‚ but that hasn't stopped a number of researchers beginning investigations into RNAi-based therapeutics over the last decade or so.  The new vaccine platform also has one more big advantage. Because it doesn’t rely on a traditional immune response from B and T cells‚ it could potentially be used in very young babies‚ or those with immune disorders who are normally ineligible for live vaccines. To test this‚ the researchers created a vaccine against a mouse virus called Nodamura. They gave a single injection to mice that had been genetically modified to remove their B and T immune cells. That one shot was enough to protect them from infection with Nodamura virus for at least three months – quite a long time‚ when you consider a mouse’s typical lifespan of somewhere between two and three years.  The vaccine worked even in newborn mice as they can already produce small RNAs‚ which is why it has potential for use in babies who would normally be too young to receive vaccines. From their previous research‚ the team is convinced that flu infection also activates the RNAi system‚ so that’s going to be their next target. They plan to develop a nasal spray vaccine‚ to avoid some of the issues and fears associated with needles. “Our next step is to use this same concept to generate a flu vaccine‚ so infants can be protected. If we are successful‚ they’ll no longer have to depend on their mothers’ antibodies‚” said Ding. There's still some way to go‚ but if it is successful it's hoped that adapting the technology to cover other viruses would be relatively straightforward.Ding explained‚ “There are several well-known human pathogens; dengue‚ SARS‚ COVID. They all have similar viral functions. This should be applicable to these viruses in an easy transfer of knowledge.”The study is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
