Thelmetria Michaelides collapsed at the podium while speaking at the department’s training academy. FOX 5’s Stephanie Ramirez reported that Michaelides was conscious and breathing when an on-site ambulance transported her to a nearby hospital. Former Chief Tiffany Green accompanied Michaelides to the hospital and remains actively involved with department leadership during the transition. She’s moving on to another leadership post in the county and had this advice for her successor: “I told her that there will be challenges, but there will also be opportunities,” Green said. “This is an amazing department, the men and women who work, that are here at the Prince George’s County Fire Department do an excellent job every single day to serve, and that’s really what it’s about.” Michaelides, who retired from the department in 2013, will have to deal with recruitment and staffing challenges that have led to longer response times. “We are career, volunteer, sworn civilians and every level of experience and pay,” she said. The head of the volunteer union said he was encouraged to hear there will be efforts to work with career and volunteer firefighters who have, at times, found themselves at odds.
