Apple introduces revolutionary privacy technique for protecting sensitive data

Apple is finally introducing homomorphic encryption into its products. This cryptographic technique is new for the tech giant but will be a massive revolution for privacy and encryption. According to a blog post detailing the release, Apple’s upcoming release will come as part of a new open-source Swift package. Essentially, this technique allows for encrypted data to be sent to a server, where computations can be completed on the data without encrypting it. Once the computations are done, the data is sent back to the original sender, where it can be decrypted once again. The process is meant to provide more protected data in cloud services and homomorphic encryption as a way to increase the privacy of its various services. Image source: José Adorno for BGR One way that we’ll be able to see this technique in action sooner rather than later is through the upcoming Live Caller ID Lookup feature debuting in iOS 18. Apple says that this feature will utilize the technique of sending the number to a server, where information about the number can be requested without actually revealing the number. Apple breaks down exactly how the holomorphic encryption process works in a GitHub post, and the company says it will utilize Private Information Retrieval, or PIR, to look up information about different numbers. The basic workflow, though, will usually be as follows: The client encrypts sensitive data and transfers it to the server. The server performs various computations without decrypting the data. The results of the various computations are sent back to the client, where the client can decrypt them. Apple hasn’t said specifically which other features it will utilize the technique in, but if it can deliver a stable and quick responding process, it will revolutionize the state of privacy on Apple devices. Ohio adds support for digital driver’s license in Apple Wallet

Ohio adds support for digital driver’s license in Apple Wallet

Ohio residents can now add their state IDs and driver's licenses to the iPhone's Wallet app. Ohio is the fifth US state to support this feature. First announced in September 2021, Apple revealed an ambitious plan to make its Wallet app the main wallet for every user. The company wanted every US state to add support for this technology so people could keep their physical IDs at home. However, almost three years have passed, and adoption has been slow. In March 2022, Arizona was the first state to add support, followed by Maryland in May, Colorado in November, and Georgia in May 2023. Since then, no other US state has added support for driver’s licenses in the Apple Wallet app. Ohio seems to be breaking that streak. First spotted by X user Henry Molski (via Appleosophy), Apple now offers Ohio residents the ability to add a driver’s license in the iPhone's Wallet app. https://x.com/HankMolski/status/1818689395798446290 In March 2022, Apple said a total of eight states were committed to supporting the feature “soon.” Ohio was one of them. These are other US states that could soon add support for adding driver licenses in the Wallet app: Connecticut Hawaii Iowa Kentucky Mississippi Oklahoma Utah Apple says IDs in the Wallet app can be used as proof of age or identity at “select businesses and venues.” This feature can also be used at select TSA checkpoints within US airports. At the moment, it’s unclear if more US states or even more countries plan to add this feature for their citizens. Since the US offers a more complex approach, as IDs change in each state, the company could potentially find success in other countries where a unique ID is offered by the federal government instead of requiring permission from each state. Don't Miss: People in these 8 states will be able to use Apple Wallet as their driver’s license The post Ohio adds support for digital driver’s license in Apple Wallet appeared first on BGR. Next-gen Apple Vision Pro might steal my favorite M4 iPad Pro feature

Next-gen Apple Vision Pro might steal my favorite M4 iPad Pro feature

A new generation of Apple Vision Pro isn't expected before 2026. However, rumors suggest this new model will be lighter, more power-efficient, have a better field of view, and unlock new capabilities with newer, faster processors. One of these improvements was first introduced on the M4 iPad Pro: Tandem displays. According to the Korean website Sisa Journal (via MacRumors), LG and Samsung prototyped micro-OLED displays with tandem OLED technology. A future generation of Apple Vision Pro could potentially adopt this technology. While the current display is already impressive, these new panels could bring the same benefits available on the M4 iPad Pro: Better power efficiency, a brighter and more accurate display, and increased longevity compared to single-layer screens. For example, with the M4 iPad Pro, Apple was able to make the display extremely thin, but thanks to the tandem OLED displays, it still offers great battery life even with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro attached to the tablet. Image source: Christian de Looper for BGR It's currently unclear when LG and Samsung will begin mass production for tandem micro-OLED displays, but the South Korean companies have plenty of time to build them, as the next Vision Pro isn't expected to arrive any time soon. Apple's current specs for micro-OLED displays are already impressive. Here's how the company describes them: "Featuring a breakthrough ultra-high-resolution display system built on top of an Apple silicon chip, Vision Pro uses micro-OLED technology to pack 23 million pixels into two displays, each the size of a postage stamp, with wide colour and high dynamic range. This technological breakthrough, combined with custom catadioptric lenses that enable incredible sharpness and clarity, delivers jaw-dropping experiences." That said, two-tandem micro-OLED displays could make the immersive experience with Apple Vision Pro even better, especially with newer chips expected to unlock new mixed reality experiences. Zeus Discovery in Ancient Aphrodisias: "As if He Were a Breathing God"

The ancient city of Aphrodisias, located in the Geyre neighborhood of Karacasu district in Aydın province, western Turkey, has long been celebrated for its exceptional marble sculptures. Recently, this iconic city of sculptors added another remarkable find to its legacy—a marble 'Zeus head'—unearthed during ongoing excavations. The discovery was announced by Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, who described it as a “unique discovery in Aphrodisias.” The colossal marble head, which had remained buried for centuries, was found near the surface, 50 meters (164 feet) west of the Temple of Aphrodite.
