Dozens of decisions from a Brazilian Supreme Court Justice related to his targeting of Elon Musk’s social media platform X have been revealed. Justice Alexandre de Moraes had barred X from making the decisions public‚ but the Republican-controlled House Judiciary Committee‚ as a result of committee subpoenas involving X‚ revealed the decisions in a 541-page staff report‚ according to the Associated Press. “To comply with its obligations under U.S. law‚ X Corp. has responded to the Committee‚” X stated earlier this week. De Moraes had demanded permanent bans on at least 150 X profiles from elected officials and journalists‚ according to investigative journalist Michael Shellenberger‚ who added: Given the dependence of elected leaders on social media‚ these demands for bans may constitute electoral interference. In one case‚ De Moraes demanded that all major social media platforms‚ including at least one‚ Twitter‚ which did not publish the offending material‚ ban a federal Congressman‚ Marcel Van Hattem. The TSE had claimed that Van Hattem had criticized the election results. Not only had Van Hattan’s video not been related to the elections‚ but it was also a criticism of the Labor Department. After de Moraes ordered X to block the accounts earlier this month‚ Musk said he would defy the court’s order once his employees were in a “safe place” where they could not be arrested. De Moraes then issued a decision  accusing Musk of obstruction of justice and incitement to crime. On April 13‚ X’s legal representative in Brazil informed de Moraes they would comply with all court orders.

The 12-person jury has been selected for former President Donald Trump’s New York criminal trial over accusations that he falsified business records related to payments made before the 2016 election by one of his lawyers.  Lawyers for Trump and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg are still working on selecting alternates in case any of the primary jurors has an emergency. Trump has pleaded not guilty to the 34 counts brought by Bragg’s office and denied that he authorized Michael Cohen to make payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.  The jurors on the case include an investment banker‚ a security engineer‚ a retired man from Lebanon‚ a speech therapist‚ a man who works at an eyewear company‚ a product developer‚ a physical therapist‚ a salesman‚ a corporate lawyer‚ an educator‚ a software engineer‚ and a civil litigator. There are seven men and five women on the jury. One woman on the jury‚ whom Trump’s team was unable to remove‚ said that she thought Trump was “very selfish and self-serving‚” and that she didn’t “really appreciate that from any public servant.” Five additional alternates need to be selected after one was selected on Thursday. The selection of the jurors has been difficult as many New Yorkers have strong opinions about the former president. On Thursday‚ one juror was dismissed after it was discovered that he had previously been arrested for tearing down Right-leaning political posters. Another juror also left after saying that she did not think she would be able to be impartial. “I definitely have concerns. I don’t think I can be fair‚” she said‚ adding that “outside influence” would “interfere” with her judgment. As Congress debates another aid package to Ukraine‚ former President Donald Trump laid out his thoughts on the issue in a Truth Social post on Thursday‚ blasting European nations for not doing more to help Ukraine in its fight against Russia. Trump didn’t weigh in specifically on the current debate between Republicans on Capitol Hill over Ukraine aid‚ but said Ukraine’s survival “is also important to” the United States. Combined‚ European nations would have to double their pace of military aid for Ukraine to match what’s coming from the U.S.‚ according to The Hill. Earlier this week‚ House Republicans proposed a trio of bills focused on aiding allies around the globe‚ including Ukraine‚ Israel‚ and Taiwan. One of the bills would allocate $61 billion for the Ukraine-Russia war‚ but some of that money would go toward assisting regional partners while a third of the money is earmarked for replenishing America’s military assets. Another bill proposed by Republicans would provide $26 billion for supporting Israel in its war against Hamas and reimbursing U.S. military operations‚ along with humanitarian aid. A third piece of legislation would allocate around $8 billion for U.S. partners in the Indo-Pacific region‚ including Taiwan. By now‚ the world has heard the news. A municipal mayor in Brussels attempted to shut down a peaceful gathering of conservative leaders simply because he disagreed with their message. The resultant outcry was enormous — the very essence of free speech was at stake — culminating in a rapidly executed emergency court order allowing the conference to resume‚ but not before the police had stepped in‚ relegating the first day of the event to abject chaos. I was honored to lead the legal challenge against this authoritarian overstep‚ and in so doing‚ play a key part in this watershed moment for fundamental freedoms.  It was business as usual as I prepared to attend the National Conservatism Conference in Brussels from April 16-17. Known as “NatCon‚” the event presented nothing out of the ordinary in a city that regularly ebbs and flows with gatherings across the political spectrum. As the center of the European Union‚ discussion‚ dialogue‚ and even peaceable demonstrations across the ideological spectrum are core to the Brussels ethos. The event‚ a mainstream gathering of conservatives representing diverse views‚ had already been canceled by two venues‚ before securing a third near Brussels’ European Quarter. It was at this point that the mayor of this district decided to step in‚ issuing an egregiously discriminatory order to shutter the conference due to a supposed threat to “public peace.” The order made two facts indisputably clear: 1) There was no evidence whatsoever of a threat of violence. And 2) It was nothing more than the vision behind National Conservatism that motivated the shutdown. In essence‚ from the mayor’s perspective: I don’t like these people. I shall not allow them to meet. As stated in the mayor’s order: That this vision is not only ethically conservative (e.g. hostility to the legalization of abortion‚ same-sex unions‚ etc.) but also focused on the defense of ‘national sovereignty‚’ which implies‚ among other things‚ a ‘Eurosceptic’ attitude. To be clear‚ pro-life views are not a crime. Neither is‚ of course‚ the “defense of national sovereignty.” This was a dictatorial and discriminatory abuse of power‚ pure and simple. And when I arrived at the conference on the morning of April 16‚ the effects of this abuse were evident. Pictures of a line of police in riot gear flooded X — the world was on notice that something insidious was afoot in Brussels. Police surrounded the door‚ preventing participants from entering. It was only my direct line with the organizers that got me in. Never mind that expected to attend were multiple high-level participants including former U.K. Home Secretary Suella Braverman‚ Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban‚ and Cardinal M&;uuml;ller from Germany. The diplomatic ramifications of this fiasco cannot be overstated‚ prompting reactions from both the U.K. and Belgian Prime Ministers‚ and massive international outcry. And yet‚ here we were‚ confronted by a line of police for exercising our right to peacefully gather and discuss the issues of our day. This kind of authoritarianism has no place in contemporary Europe — a disgrace to our continent and the values the EU espouses. As a lawyer for ADF International‚ an organization dedicated to the promotion of fundamental freedoms‚ I found myself in the right place at the right time to rise to the defense of basic human rights. We lead the charge alongside the NatCon organizers in mounting a legal challenge‚ which was decided in our favor by the Conseil d’&;Eacute;tat‚ Belgium’s highest administrative court‚ at 2:30 a.m.on April 17. The fact that the court had convened and decided overnight was a testament to the outrageous nature of what had transpired. The judgment was clear — the conference would be allowed to continue into its second day without police interference. Fueled by espresso and croissants‚ day two of the conference proceeded with a markedly electric energy. Conference attendees previously barred from entry took on the talks and conversations with a newfound gusto‚ having just come face to face with the frightening reality of what it means to be a “conservative” in Europe. While among us at the conference there would surely be disagreement and differences of opinion on a great many issues‚ we found ourselves enjoying a unique moment of solidarity — united in our shared commitment to protecting our basic human right to speak freely. What happened this week depicts the state of free speech in Europe in a very poor light. This is the sad reality of European censorship.
