Numerous foreign policy experts are urging Israel to deliver a “disproportionate” military response to Iran’s attacks over the weekend and are warning that time is winding down to deal with the Islamic Republic before it becomes a nuclear state. Part of what is driving the concern from foreign policy and military experts is that Iran has strengthened its relationship with Russia and may soon acquire more advanced military hardware from the Russians that will make it much harder for the U.S.‚ Israel‚ and Arab allies in the region to counter Iranian threats. The Washington Post reported on Monday night that top Iranian officials recently attended a VIP tour of Russia’s most advanced military systems and that they are reportedly seeking to acquire Russia’s S-400 missile system‚ which some military experts claim can shoot down stealth fighter jets. If Iran were to acquire the S-400‚ and if it really can shoot down stealth planes‚ then options could be limited for the U.S. and Israel to deal with Iran’s nuclear program if a situation presented itself where it needed to be destroyed. Iran has rapidly increased their production of enriched uranium — in violation of international law — to the point where they now possess enough nuclear material to build a nuclear weapon with a breakout time of one week. The facility potentially could be deep enough that conventional weapons in the U.S. arsenal may not be able to reach it. Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton said on Sunday that Israel should not respond to Iran’s unprecedented attack — which included a combined more than 300 missiles and drones — with a “proportional” response. “The way to reestablish deterrence is not proportional. That’s academic talk‚” Bolton said. “The way you establish deterrence is by telling your adversary‚ if you ever try that again‚ the price you will pay will be so much higher than any gain you think you can get‚ you shouldn’t even think about it.” Bolton said that Israel should go after Iran’s air defenses‚ military headquarters of the Iranian military and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps‚ and their oil infrastructure. Professor Jacob Nagel‚ senior fellow at FDD and a former top Israeli official‚ said on Monday that a “disproportionate” response would be the only thing that Iran understands. “If Iran walks away from this moment without paying a severe price‚ Tehran may be emboldened to deploy its weapons again‚” they wrote. “And the next time‚ these drones and missiles may be armed with nuclear or chemical payloads.” “Israel must now adopt a doctrine of ‘deterrence by punishment’ where it inflicts disproportionate costs on its enemies and focus its response on a few priority targets‚” they continued. “The Israeli military could destroy the weapons deployed against them‚ including unnamed aerial vehicle development and production plants‚ as well as cruise missile and drone storage facilities inside Iran. Israel could also hit Iranian ports‚ oil and gas refineries‚ pipelines‚ and other infrastructure that finance the regime.” Dubowitz and Nagel said that the most important target for Israel should be Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Israel “must now shift to neutralizing Iran’s nuclear scientists and their ability to build an actual weapon‚” they wrote. “After this weekend‚ the threat of a nuclear weapon being deployed from inside Iran toward Israel is a step closer to reality.” Former British Army Commander Colonel Richard Kemp — who served a chairman of the British government’s Cobra Intelligence Group‚ responsible for coordinating the work of the national intelligence agencies‚ including MI5 and MI6 — also argued to a “disproportionate” response was not only warranted‚ but needed. “I don’t think Israel should be looking at a proportionate response‚ I think Israel should be looking at a disproportionate response here‚” he said during a media interview on Monday. “Israel should deliver a very‚ very severe retaliatory attack or series of attacks against Iran. And the reason I say that‚ it sounds terrible‚ sounds like war mongering‚ it isn’t intended to be that. Former Trump defense attorney Bill Brennan said on Monday that he is worried about politically motivated people getting on the jury in former President Donald Trump’s Manhattan criminal trial. Brennan made the remarks while speaking to Jake Tapper on CNN about what Trump’s legal team needs to do to ensure that the former president receives a fair trial. “Well‚ I’ll tell ya Jake‚ when we were doing it‚ and Judge Merchan is a very serious man‚ he’s very smart‚” Brennan said. “He’s extremely courteous. I mean‚ I’m not getting into people’s biases or prejudice‚ I’m not qualified to do that. I can tell you having spent several weeks with the man‚ he’s a gentleman and he gave us as much time as we needed.” He then gave an example that highlighted the enormous difficulty that Trump’s team will have as they try to weed those with prejudices against Trump from becoming jurors. Brennan said: “We had a lady come up as a prospective juror. I’ve been picking juries for about 35 years. She looked good to me‚ a lady in her mid-40s of Irish extraction. She spoke with a brogue‚ she worked in an Irish pub‚ and in our questionnaire‚ questions 29 and 30 said‚ “Do you have any former — do you have any strong feelings about the former president and if so‚ would they affect your ability to be fair&;#63;” “And she checked them. So I said‚ ‘Well‚ ma’am‚ would they be positive or negative feelings&;#63;'” he continued. “And she says‚ ‘Oh‚ I despise that man.’ And I said‚ I guess it was late in the day‚ and I said‚ ‘Oh‚ come on‚ don’t sugarcoat things for me. Two Colorado counties are challenging the state’s laws that restrict local law enforcement’s ability to cooperate with federal immigration authorities. On Monday‚ a lawsuit was filed against Colorado through Democratic Governor Jared Polis by Douglas and El Paso Counties‚ who argue that the state’s sanctuary city laws are dangerous and unconstitutional. The suit challenges two laws‚ HB 19-1124 and HB 23-1100‚ which prohibit police from detaining an illegal immigrant based on a civil immigration detainer from an agency like ICE and block local governments from working with the feds to detain illegal immigrants.  “The nation is facing an immigration crisis. The nation‚ the state‚ and local governments need to cooperate and share resources to address this crisis‚” the suit‚ filed in Denver County District Court‚ says. “Colorado House Bills 19-1124 and 23- 1100 prohibit the necessary cooperation and create dangerous conditions for the State and migrants.” The suit argues that the Colorado Constitution “forbids the use of constitutional power to prohibit a political subdivision of the State from cooperating or contracting with the federal government.”  The counties say that the laws should be struck down and they should be allowed to cooperate with federal agencies to enforce immigration law. Douglas County backed Trump by about 7 points in the 2020 election while El Paso County‚ home to Colorado Springs‚ went for Trump by 11 points.  El Paso’s Board of County Commissioners voted last week 4-0 to authorize the county to join Douglas County’s litigation against the state.  “Here in El Paso County‚ Colorado‚ we have no choice but to release violent‚ career criminals back onto our streets‚ because we have no way to communicate with ICE (Immigrations and Customs Enforcement) and identify undocumented immigrants‚ or keep them in custody‚ once local judicial adjudication has been executed‚” said Sheriff Joseph Roybal.  CLICK HERE TO GET THE DAILYWIRE+ APP Douglas County Commissioner Lora Thomas pointed to the influx of illegal immigrants into Denver as one reason for the lawsuit.  “The national migrant crisis has forced Denver to continue to cut local services for residents. We have an obligation first to our citizens‚ and we see what’s happening in Denver as a warning sign to be proactive here in Douglas County‚” Douglas County Commissioner Lora Thomas said.  Last week‚ Denver announced budget cuts to some department‚ including the police‚ sheriff‚ and fire departments‚ to allocate more funding for illegal immigrants. Mayor Mike Johnston has regularly asked the Biden administration for more federal dollars for the city to deal with the migrant crisis.
