Harris had not formally called Walz to offer him the position, a source familiar with process told CNN. A former educator, Walz is currently in his second term as Minnesota governor and chairs the Democratic Governors Association. He previously served 12 years in Congress, representing a conservative-leaning rural district that, both before and after his tenure, has been mostly dominated by Republicans. In the time leading up to his selection as Harris’ running mate, Walz had first been an outspoken defender of Joe Biden following his disastrous debate performance as calls for the president to end his reelection bid escalated. When Biden did drop out, Walz endorsed Harris the next day and has since emerged as a reliable, energetic and cutting advocate for the presumptive Democratic nominee. Ford Motor Company filed a patent application for technology to surveil and detect speeding violations in surrounding vehicles. The patent application, published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on July 18th, is titled “Systems and Methods for Detecting Speeding Violations.” Ford initially filed for the patent on January 12, 2023. The patent application reads: The disclosure is generally directed to systems and methods for detecting and responding to speeding violations. An example method executed by a processor in a first vehicle (a law-enforcement vehicle, for example) can include receiving, from a vehicle speed detection system, a speed measurement associated with a second vehicle. The processor may determine that the speed of the second vehicle exceeds a threshold speed and may operate a camera to capture an image of the second vehicle. The image may be evaluated for determining at least one identifying feature of the second vehicle. A record may then be generated. The record can include the speed measurement, the image, and the first identifying feature. In some cases, the record may be transmitted to another law-enforcement vehicle for pursuing the second vehicle and/or to an Internet-of-Things (IoT) roadside unit for tracking the second vehicle. Kamala Harris on Tuesday will tap Tim Walz, the liberal Democrat governor of Minnesota, to be her running mate in November, putting a relatively unknown political figure into the spotlight with less than 100 days until Election Day. CNN first reported that Harris had settled on Walz, citing “four people close to the process,” with the Associated Press following shortly behind. Harris is expected to unveil Walz at a rally in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania later this afternoon. Walz was on a shortlist of potential running mates that also included Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. Walz, 60, was one of the lesser-known vice presidential contenders, but he exploded into the public eye when President Joe Biden dropped out of the race last month. On social media, Gen Z activists introduced Walz to their younger audience, some calling him “the mid-western dad we need as VP.” Democrats hope Walz can help Harris whittle down the margins in battleground states like Wisconsin and Michigan. His folksy manner, casual dress style, small town background, and ability to talk to skeptical midwesterners are seen as assets for the progressive, coastal Harris. At the outset of his career, the two-term governor and former congressman initially presented himself as a moderate. But over time, Walz has increasingly leaned Left and implemented a sweeping progressive agenda. As governor, Walz signed a bill allowing illegal migrants to get driver’s licenses, and gave more than 55,000 formerly incarcerated people the ability to vote again. He also signed legislation legalizing recreational marijuana, tightening gun laws, making abortion a “fundamental right,” and preserving legal transgender medical interventions for children. Walz was governor when the violent George Floyd riots swept Minneapolis. The riots resulted in at least two deaths, more than 600 arrests, and more than $500 million in property damage to hundreds of businesses. Afterward, the city’s police force hemorrhaged officers. Republicans slammed Walz for his stringent COVID restrictions, as well as the state’s nursing home deaths. They also accused him of refusing to build relationships with them, unlike other Democrat governors. In the summer of 2020, a conservative group sued over Walz’s mask mandate, arguing that Walz had made a power grab and that the law allowing the emergency declaration was unconstitutional. They lost their case in the spring. Walz is a veteran of the Army National Guard, where he served for 24 years. He also coached high school football and taught social studies before he was elected to Congress in 2006 as a Democrat in a red district. He was first elected governor in 2018 and shares two children with his wife, Gwen Whipple, a fellow teacher. In recent weeks, Walz has frequently appeared on television to slam the Trump-Vance ticket, saying, “These guys are just weird,” during a recent MSNBC appearance. Notably, former President Donald Trump also chose a midwesterner as his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance. Walz and Vance have one common denominator: their love of diet Mountain Dew.

A federal judge ruled on Monday that Google has a monopoly over general search engine services, siding with the Justice Department and more than two dozen states that sued the tech company, alleging antitrust violations. U.S. District of Columbia Judge Amit Mehta said that Google violated antitrust laws through its efforts to be the default search engine on cell phones and web browsers and controlling general search text advertisements. Google has denied the allegations, arguing that it has just engaged in standard business practices.  “After having carefully considered and weighed the witness testimony and evidence, the court reaches the following conclusion: Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly,” Mehta wrote in a 276-page decision. “Specifically, the court holds that (1) there are relevant product markets for general search services and general search text ads; (2) Google has monopoly power in those markets; (3) Google’s distribution agreements are exclusive and have anticompetitive effects; and (4) Google has not offered valid procompetitive justifications for those agreements,” Mehta wrote. “Importantly, the court also finds that Google has exercised its monopoly power by charging supracompetitive prices for general search text ads.” Through the distribution agreements, Mehta said that Google was able to disincentivize potential competitors and maintain its dominance in the industry.   Mehta did rule that Google did not have a monopoly in the market for search advertising. The judge will now have to come up with an order to address the monopoly, the Wall Street Journal reported.  Google plans to appeal the ruling, with Alphabet Global Affairs President Kent Walker saying that the court was penalizing Google for its success.  “This decision recognizes that Google offers the best search engine, but concludes that we shouldn’t be allowed to make it easily available,” he said. “As this process continues, we will remain focused on making products that people find helpful and easy to use.” WATCH THE TRAILER FOR ‘AM I RACIST?’ — A MATT WALSH COMEDY ON DEI Joining the DOJ in its lawsuit, which was first filed in 2020, was a coalition of 38 states and territories, including a number of Republican-led states.  Attorney General Merrick Garland celebrated the decision. “This victory against Google is an historic win for the American people,” he said. “No company — no matter how large or influential — is above the law.” Google has also been scrutinized in recent years over allegations of political bias against conservatives. In recent weeks, lawmakers questioned the tech giant after search recommendations did not autocomplete searches for information about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.
