After Scenic Waterway Declines‚ Government Sides with Activists to Intervene on the Wye River’s Behalf

The fourth-longest river in the UK is declining due to farming pollution‚ but the government has appointed several former and current MPs to organize its rescue—armed with £35 million. The River Wye is classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest‚ as well as a Special Area of Conservation‚ while the lower half where it […] The post After Scenic Waterway Declines‚ Government Sides with Activists to Intervene on the Wye River’s Behalf appeared first on Good News Network.

NASA's Ingenuity Team Receives Final Message‚ But The Mars Helicopter Is Not Dead Yet

NASA's Ingenuity team has said a final goodbye to the helicopter robot‚ receiving a final message before the team disbands – but Ingenuity is not actually dead yet‚ and will continue to collect data on the Red Planet.Ingenuity is an impressive little robot‚ becoming the first to make a powered‚ controlled flight on a planet other than Earth in April 2021. That's no easy feat‚ given the wildly different conditions on Mars.&;quot;The Red Planet has a significantly lower gravity – one-third that of Earth’s – and an extremely thin atmosphere with only 1 percent the pressure at the surface compared to our planet‚&;quot; NASA explained in a press release when Ingenuity made its first flight. &;quot;This means there are relatively few air molecules with which Ingenuity’s two 4-foot-wide (1.2-meter-wide) rotor blades can interact to achieve flight.&;quot;The helicopter – really a prototype – was only planned to make five flights over 30 Martian days‚ but ended up making 72 flights over 1‚000. It worked so well that NASA began using it to gain a bird's eye view of Mars and spot interesting areas for Perseverance to take a closer look at.Unfortunately‚ on the 72nd flight‚ Ingenuity made an emergency landing‚ losing contact with Perseverance. When contact was re-established‚ photos from the helicopter showed that a rotor had been badly damaged‚ and Ingenuity would not fly again.Ingenuity‚ captured by NASA's Perseverance rover (top left).Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/ASUThe helicopter‚ though no longer able to fly‚ is still capable of collecting data and transmitting it to Perseverance‚ which in turn transmits it to Earth through NASA's Deep Space Network. Before the Ingenuity team disbanded‚ they received one final message from Ingenuity and ate celebratory cake.“With apologies to Dylan Thomas‚ Ingenuity will not be going gently into that good Martian night‚” Josh Anderson‚ Ingenuity team lead at JPL said in a statement. “It is almost unbelievable that after over 1‚000 Martian days on the surface‚ 72 flights‚ and one rough landing‚ she still has something to give. And thanks to the dedication of this amazing team‚ not only did Ingenuity overachieve beyond our wildest dreams‚ but also it may teach us new lessons in the years to come.”Now resting in &;quot;Valinor Hills&;quot;‚ the robot's mission will be to collect data while stationary‚ hopefully finding out useful information about the environment ahead of future crewed missions to the planet.

The Star-Nosed Mole’s Snoot Is 100 Times More Sensitive Than Your Fingertips

The Star-Nosed Mole’s Snoot Is 100 Times More Sensitive Than Your Fingertips

The star-nosed mole is a mammal that does exactly what it says on the tin‚ sporting a bizarre snoot that has 22 fleshy tentacles in an astral arrangement. The flapping mechanism can do more than just smell‚ being 100 times more sensitive than our fingertips‚ but its olfactory skills are not to be sniffed at – being capable of blowing bubbles so it can detect the odor of prey even when underwater. The star-nosed mole recently starred (pun intended) in the latest series from David Attenborough and BBC Studios‚ Mammals. The series tracks some incredible animal behaviors‚ including world-first footage of a leopard hunting roosting baboons at night‚ and a group of wolves that have reclaimed a habitat riddled with landmines‚ but the video that really got the IFLS team talking was that of the star-nosed mole.          What is a star-nosed mole&;#63;The star-nosed mole (Condylura cristata) is a mole species that's famous for its celestial snoot‚ looking a bit like a hand is stuck to its face. They share a lot of characteristics with other moles in the Talpidae family‚ but none of those moles’ noses hold a candle to the star-nosed mole.What do star-nosed moles eat&;#63;Star-nosed moles eat earthworms‚ nematodes‚ and insects primarily‚ but they do also branch out to larger prey items like crustaceans‚ mollusks‚ and even small fish. They have to eat around twice their weight in food each day‚ making it dead handy that earthworms have a habit of falling into the network of underground tunnels star-nosed moles primarily live in. These moles are also rapid eaters‚ capable of eating bugs in less than two-tenths of a second and deciding if they want to eat something or not within 8 milliseconds.When spring floods their underground tunnels‚ star nosed moles show off their swimming skills.Image credit: BBC StudiosIn Mammals‚ we see that these tunnels can flood in spring‚ but the giant digging utensils that are star-nosed mole hands can be repurposed as excellent flippers‚ helping them to move through flooded tunnels without drowning. The evolution of their noses comes in handy here‚ too‚ as they’ve adapted a way to smell their prey underwater.The star-nosed mole’s noseThese moles can use their noses to push bubbles of air in and out so that they can smell underwater‚ which has made them highly proficient at hunting in lakes and streams. According to a 2017 conference presentation‚ the nose contains more than 100‚000 nerve fibers within its fleshy tentacles – five times the amount found in the human hand‚ despite being spread out across a distance equivalent to your fingertip.Star-nosed moles have weak eyesight.Image credit: BBC StudiosDo star-nosed moles have eyes&;#63;Star-nosed moles do have eyes‚ but their vision is weak. However‚ it seems what they lack in sight they make up for with the fovea – the 11th ray located at the bottom of the star nose that has the largest representation in the mole's brain‚ despite being small with just a few sensory organs on its surface. It's the most used ray when investigating prey‚ helping them to build a picture of their environment with a wibble of the nose when the eyes just aren't cutting it.Where do star-nosed moles live&;#63;Star-nosed moles live in the eastern half of North America‚ where they scuttle through tunnels in forests‚ marshes‚ and mountainous habitats. As semi-aquatic critters they’re fond of wet environments‚ and it seems they’re doing just fine‚ classified as being of Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List Of Threatened Species.Now‚ where do I get one of these noses&;#63;

Lifetime Ban On Buying Tobacco For Anyone Born After 2009 Passes UK Vote

Lifetime Ban On Buying Tobacco For Anyone Born After 2009 Passes UK Vote

A law that would prevent anyone born after 2009 from ever legally being able to purchase tobacco in the UK was backed by a majority of politicians in a vote on Tuesday‚ April 16. The UK government says it aims to create “the first smokefree generation”. But how will the ban work‚ and what happens next&;#63;How will the new UK smoking ban work&;#63;Under the new law‚ which the government wants to get going by 2027 according to the BBC‚ the legal age limit for buying tobacco products in the UK will increase by one year every year. It follows similar efforts in countries like New Zealand‚ which saw its own pioneering ban reversed only recently.In practice‚ it means that those born in 2009 or later will never reach the legal age limit‚ and thus will never be permitted to buy cigarettes. Anyone currently over the limit‚ which stands at 18 years of age‚ will not be affected‚ and smoking itself will not be banned.The Tobacco and Vapes Bill also seeks to stop young people who have never smoked from picking up a vaping habit instead. A plan to ban disposable vapes in England will be extended to the whole of the UK‚ a new tax will be introduced‚ and manufacturers will be forced to modify the flavors and packaging of their products to make them less appealing to children. Nicotine pouches‚ which have recently been getting lots of political attention‚ will also be banned for young people. What’s been the reaction to the bill&;#63;The bill has cross-party support in the UK and was expected to pass Tuesday’s vote comfortably‚ which it did by 383 votes to 67. Health and Social Care Secretary Victoria Atkins said in a statement that the bill “will save thousands of lives‚ ease the strain on our NHS and improve the UK’s productivity.”That’s not to say it hasn’t sparked some controversy‚ though. A number of MPs from the ruling Conservative party abstained or voted against the bill.One of those was former Prime Minister Liz Truss‚ who lambasted supporters of the legislation as “finger-wagging nannying control freaks”. Others have questioned the workability of enforcing the ban‚ or whether it will even work to discourage smoking. Among health experts‚ however‚ there’s a broad consensus that the legislation will be a positive step forward.“The prime minister’s pledge to raise the legal age for buying cigarettes would have a truly transformative effect on the health of the next generation‚” said Professor Stephen Holgate‚ a specialist in immunopharmacology at the University of Southampton. “What an amazing legacy this would be where the Nation’s future health comes before any other interests.”Professor John Iredale of the University of Bristol agreed: “We owe it to our children and young people to phase out exposure to tobacco. As a Junior doctor I saw over and over the havoc wrought by smoking related disease and death to individuals‚ breadwinners‚ the economically active and their families.”“A once in a lifetime opportunity”The World Health Organization estimates that more than 8 million people die every year from tobacco use. As well as the clearly documented link to cancer‚ cigarettes have been associated with a number of different diseases – not just in smokers themselves‚ but those exposed to cigarette smoke second-hand.The nicotine in tobacco products is highly addictive‚ making quitting a challenge. That’s why health authorities try so hard to discourage people from smoking in the first place.  The UK ban has been a few years in the making. Though there are more hurdles to overcome before it is fully enacted‚ its proponents will no doubt be buoyed by their latest political victory. Some commentators have addressed the fact that forecasts are pointing towards a change of government for the country later this year‚ but given the support for this bill from both sides of the aisle‚ the road ahead looks fairly clear.For expert scientists like Professor Ann McNeill of King’s College London‚ this couldn’t be more welcome: “We have known for decades just how uniquely deadly smoking is‚ but this knowledge has not been acted upon. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill is a once in a lifetime opportunity to put this right and see the end of tobacco smoking in a generation.”“We should all come together and support it.”
