Lukas Nelson Announces Debut Solo Album ‘American Romance,’ Produced By Shooter Jennings

His solo debut. Today, Lukas Nelson announced his new album American Romance, which is his first big project since he and his former band Promise of the Real went on an indefinite hiatus last year. Of course, Lukas is the son of the great Willie Nelson, and most recently released an album called Sticks & Stones in 2023. The album will be released in June in partnership with Sony Music Nashville, and he’s giving fans a preview of what’s to come on the 12-song tracklist with the lead single “Ain’t Done.” It’s a beautiful song full of hope that encourages the listener to believe that there is so much good in store for their life: “I went through this period of self-reflection and George Harrison’s song, ‘All Things Must Pass,’ was part of what got me through that moment. It gave me that understanding that it’s not for us to know what comes next. Everything changes and nothing stays the same.” What makes it even better is that the record was produced by the great Shooter Jennings, who is the song of the late, great Waylon Jennings and an extremely talented and well-respected producer… it’s so cool to see them working together. Solidifying Lukas as a solo artist, American Romance showcases his incredible, very honest talent for songwriting that is unlike anyone else in country, but music in general. Lukas definitely has a sound that’s a country/rock fusion, but it seems as though he’s ready to full lean into the country aspect of his roots on this project and I cannot wait. American Romance includes duets with Stephen Wilson Jr. and Sierra Ferrell, who he’s worked with many times… if you haven’t listened to their bluegrass cover of Adele’s “Someone Like You,” please change that now. You’re missing out. In terms of the project as a whole, Lukas says it’s the start of a “new era” and serves as a “love story to the country that raised me”: “This album is the first chapter in a whole new era of my life as an artist. It’s a love story to the country that raised me. Diners and highways that carried me through the joy and pain that led to the music you hear now.” His former band member Corey McCormick (bass) will appear on this album, and while Lukas is definitely a highly-respected favorite in the Americana/independent section of country, I’m excited for many in the the mainstream to be introduced to him as a solo artist because he really is incredible. His live shows are some of the bets I’ve ever seen, and don’t let the fact that he’s the son of one of, and in my opinion the, best songwriters and artists of all-time make you skeptical of the music… he’s got talent in spades and is completely his own artist. It’s pretty rare for the child of a legend to be on the same level of talent as their parent, but I have no problem saying I think that’s the case here, and I can’t wait for the world to officially meet him with this album. If you haven’t listened to his music before, POTR was one of my favorite bands, and I’d highly recommend at least checking out their self-titled 2017 album to get familiar… it’s a work of art. American Romance is due out everywhere on June 20th, and I’ll be counting down the days. You can listen to the “Ain’t Done” here: “Ain’t Done” American Romance tracklist: 1. Ain’t Done 2. Cody Johnson’s Unreleased “Thank God I’m Not That Tough” Is One Of His Best Hidden Gems

Every artist has a collection of songs stored away in the vault, either waiting for the perfect time to be released or never seeing the light of day because the lyrics don’t resonate with them anymore. Or maybe they are too raw to think about the possibility of singing them live every night. Tyler Childers is a perfect example of one of those artists who has many songs that are in the vault, like “Her and the Banks,” “Redneck Romeo,” and many more. The more fans beg for those to be gifted to them, which I too am guilty of, the more that Childers is less likely to release them, but at least her performs a few of these unreleased beauties at his live shows. However, one artist has an unreleased gem that I still hope we can get one day on streaming platforms: a hidden from Cody Johnson. Eleven years ago, a baby-faced Cody Johnson debuted the song on a radio show, which was captured by the TV series, Troubadour TX. “This is a song… actually, the week that I was up there with y’all talking about doing these three shows together, I came home from that trip, and the day I got home, I wrote this song. It’s a little bit different than you’ve heard from me. But I just figured I’d try it out on you and if it’s just horrible… Guess what? We’re live.”  The song highlights the story of a man who is hit at the lowest point of his life when his woman leaves him. He begs his wife to stay, but his pleas do not work, and now he’s left alone, wrestling with the thoughts that his actions have caused his life to crumble. The man begins to have dark thoughts about ending his life due to the depression he finds himself in, but he does not have the strength to go through with the horrific action. “There’s a bottle on the counter to help me overcome the fear A pistol in my dresser drawer that can take me far from here Soon enough, Thank God I’m not that tough I played my guitar last night for 22 dollars in tips, In ten days they’ll turn off my lights, I just can’t seem to make these loose ends meet Oh I’m dead on my feet It’s a wonder I ain’t in jail by now The way I let everything go down I feel like I’m burning up in flames The hardest part that I’ll deal with Is knowing that I caused all this Sooner or later I’m gonna have to lay In this lonely bed I made…” Johnson does not often perform this song, and this original video of the track is one of the best-quality performances of the tune on the internet. Johnson is known for some heartbreak anthems, which gives me some hope that we could still get this song on streaming platforms one day. However, this song is much deeper than the love songs that Johnson has leaned into on his latest projects, such as “C’mon Cowgirl,” “I’m Gonna Love You,” and “Dirt Cheap.” “Thank God I’m Not That Tough” deserves a second look. It’s a phenomenal song from Johnson’s early songwriting days. Check it out. Some folks in the comments have also noted that even 11 years since this video was first posted, it’s still one of their favorites. “Still here in 2024 wishing this was released…” “2025 and still my favorite song by Cody. Real country…..Country music roots long lost and forgotten.” “Makes me think about how many of these he’s sitting on.” “My FAVORITE song…I love ’em all, but this one hits me…” “This is my favorite song by Cody, hands down. Victimless storytelling.” “Can he please put this on an album already? Geez.” “This song has helped me through some hard times.”The post Cody Johnson’s Unreleased “Thank God I’m Not That Tough” Is One Of His Best Hidden Gems first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
