Curiosity Finds Record-Breaking Organic Molecules On Mars Possibly Formed From Fatty Acids

We can’t say the molecules are the product of life, but the findings indicate if Mars had life billions of years ago, the evidence probably hasn’t been erased.

California woman accused of murdering fire captain wife captured in Mexico after 33 days on the run

A California woman suspected of murdering her fire captain wife finally has been captured in Mexico after being on the run for 33 days.Yolanda Olejniczak Marodi was taken into custody after being located at a hotel roughly two miles south of the U.S. border in the city of Mexicali — approximately 175 miles southeast of where her wife was found stabbed to death at her house in Ramona, California. 'We had a big fight, and I hurt her.'The Baja California Citizen Security Secretariat said in a statement that once Mexican law enforcement agents confirmed her identity, she was taken into custody and transferred to the border "allowing U.S. authorities to proceed with legal action."Marodi was turned over to the U.S. Marshals Service after being returned to America at a U.S. port of entry, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement, adding that "Yolanda is being processed and will be booked into custody for murder."U.S. officials reportedly had asked Mexican authorities to assist them in locating Marodi. The search for Marodi included assets from Mexican law enforcement, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, and the U.S. Marshals Service San Diego Fugitive Task Force.U.S. officials said in an arrest warrant for Marodi that they had a video showing the suspect crossing the southern border into Mexico in her vehicle via the San Ysidro port of entry just hours after 49-year-old Cal Fire Captain Rebecca “Becky” Marodi was found stabbed to death Feb. 17. As Blaze News previously reported, Rebecca Marodi was found dead inside her home with multiple stab wounds on her neck, chest, and abdomen.Law enforcement previously said the incident was being treated as a "potential domestic violence incident."Police immediately considered Yolanda a prime suspect after she fled the residence following Rebecca's murder. Security camera video from the home reportedly provided investigators with the chilling last moments of Rebecca Marodi's life.According to the arrest warrant, the home surveillance video shows a female — suspected to be Yolanda — "chasing after" a female, who appears to be Rebecca.A voice believed to be Rebecca's reportedly is heard screaming in the video, "Yolanda! Please ... I don’t want to die!"A voice believed to be Yolanda allegedly replied, "You should have thought about that before."The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office pointed out that Rebecca reappeared in the video and seemed to have blood on her back."Yolanda can be seen at one point standing in front of Rebecca with what appeared to be a knife in her right hand," the report noted. Yolanda allegedly had blood on her arms in the video. The home’s security camera reportedly captured Yolanda wearing different clothes, placing belongings, luggage, and a dog into her silver Chevrolet Equinox SUV and driving away. Citing Department of Homeland Security records, the affidavit states that on the same night as Rebecca's murder, Yolanda's SUV crossed into Mexico — approximately 45 miles south of Ramona.Citing the affidavit, NBC News reported that an unnamed witness received a dubious text message from Yolanda a day after Rebecca was killed.“Becky came home and told me she was leaving, she met someone else, all the messages were lies. We had a big fight, and I hurt her ... I’m sorry,” the text message from Yolanda read, according to the affidavit.Yolanda and Rebecca reportedly had been married for about two years. Rebecca had served Cal Fire for more than 30 years. She helped battle the Eaton fire in January near Los Angeles as seen in an Instagram video shared by the Cal Fire’s battalion in Temecula. The Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department thanked authorities after Yolanda's capture.“We thank our law enforcement partners in San Diego and Mexico for their hard work,” spokesperson Maggie Cline De La Rosa said in a statement. “Becky was a beloved member of our community and Department, and we miss her greatly.”Last month, Cal Fire San Diego launched a benevolent fund to assist Rebecca's 77-year-old mother with financial challenges."She [Marodi] was the sole caregiver for her mother, who is now falling on some hard times due to no longer having a caregiver, so we're there to help support her in any way she needs," said John Clark, battalion chief and chief operating officer for the benevolent fund.Yolanda is an ex-convict who pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of her husband — James Olejniczak — and she was in prison from February 2004 to November 2013 for that killing. In an eerie similarity, Yolanda allegedly attempted to flee from law enforcement with her two young children before turning herself in to police in connection with her husband's killing.Like Blaze News? Illinois Democrats beloved by teachers' unions target homeschooling families, religious schools

A new bill that will soon be passed along for a full vote in the Illinois state House takes aim at religious schools and parents who homeschool their children. On Wednesday, lawmakers on the House Education Policy Committee gathered to consider HB 2827, better known as the Homeschool Act. The bill not only requires all private and religious elementary and secondary schools to register with the state annually, but it also requires these schools to share sensitive information about their students, like names and home addresses. It also requires these private schools to make plain their policies and specifically promise not to restrict hairstyles "historically associated with race" or "ethnicity."'This bill invades our privacy, is unconstitutional, and ... interferes with parental rights.'Furthermore, the bill requires all homeschooling parents and guardians — who must have a high school diploma or the equivalent — to fill out a homeschool declaration form about their homeschooled children and submit the form to the public school or school district the children would otherwise attend. The form must be resubmitted every year that the children are homeschooled, or the child may be considered truant.District and/or office of education officials may also demand that homeschool administrators provide a homeschooled child's "educational portfolio" — comprising "samples of any writings, worksheets, workbooks, or creative materials used or developed by the child" — on demand. Homeschooled children who wish to participate in extracurricular activities at public schools, such as sports, must likewise submit proof of immunizations and health examinations or provide a certificate of religious exemption.Homeschooling parents and guardians who fail to comply with the measure could face misdemeanor charges, WTTW reported. The bill was introduced by state Rep. Terra Costa Howard (D-Glen Ellyn) and enjoys more than a dozen cosponsors, all of whom are Democrat, many of whom are women, and at least one of whom has blue hair.Costa Howard claimed the bill is necessary to protect children who may be the victims of abusive parents or guardians. Such parents, the theory goes, can conceal their maltreatment by keeping their children at home and away from the scrutinizing eyes of teachers, administrators, and coaches."Currently, Illinois has zero, I’m going to say it again, zero regulations," Costa Howard said during deliberations about the bill. "Thirty-eight states have regulations. Illinois is an outlier. This is not something we want to be an outlier on.""We have tracked over 500 cases of extreme abuse and neglect in homeschool settings where the abuse escalated because of the isolation afforded through homeschooling," claimed Jonah Stewart, research director of the Coalition for Responsible Home Education. However, homeschooling parents and advocates decried such presumptions about their motives. "The proponents claim that children who are being homeschooled are at greater risk of abuse and neglect. This is not supported by the two peer-reviewed studies that have been produced," countered Will Estrada, senior counsel at the Home School Legal Defense Association."This bill targets homeschool parents and treats us as criminals, guilty until proven innocent," said Aziza Butler, a former public school teacher who now homeschools her children."We believe [this] is religious persecution," added homeschool parent Latasha Fields. "That's what we believe. We believe it really is because this bill invades our privacy, is unconstitutional, and it does. It threatens, and it overreach[es], and it interferes with parental rights."Some worry that the bill could be selectively enforced and possibly lead to harassment of law-abiding Christians and other homeschoolers, though Costa Howard insisted that investigations into homeschooling families would occur only in response to serious allegations.Others noted that children have not necessarily been safe on the campuses of their local public schools. Just last week, Christina Formella, a 30-year-old special education teacher and soccer coach in Downers Grove, Illinois, was charged with multiple sex-related offenses after she allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old boy inside a classroom in December 2023.Thousands of concerned parents like Fields and Butler crowded the capitol on Wednesday, singing hymns and patriotic songs to protest the bill — a far cry from the disruptive and sometimes violent demonstrations by leftists at other capitol buildings around the country in recent years. These parents and homeschooling groups also submitted a staggering 40,000 witness slips opposing the bill, while supporters garnered fewer than 1,000 witness slips. Nevertheless, the bill passed the House Education Policy Committee 8-4. All Democrats voted in favor of it except one, who voted present. The bill will now move on to the entire state House floor for a vote.Of note, three of the Democrat cosponsors of the Homeschool Act are among the top recipients of political donations from the Illinois Federation of Teachers. Since 2010, the campaigns for state Reps. Costa Howard, Katie Stuart, and Janet Yang Rohr have received more than $630,000 in donations total from the IFT, according to watchdog group Illinois Policy. The Illinois Education Association even honored Costa Howard with an award for her "deep support of public education" and positive impact on "all our education support personnel.""Costa Howard is champion of the rights for our education employees. We are proud to honor her with our Friend of Education award," the union stated in April 2022.Costa Howard did not respond to a request for comment from Blaze News.Like Blaze News? Trump imposes 25% tariff on countries buying Venezuela’s oil

President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on any country purchasing oil or gas from Venezuela in an attempt to crack down on Venezuela’s hostility toward the United States, according to a post on Truth Social.'The return of our compatriots to their nation.'The post read, “President Donald J. Trump announced today that the United States of America will be putting what is known as a Secondary Tariff on the Country of Venezuela, for numerous reasons, including the fact that Venezuela has purposefully and deceitfully sent to the United States, undercover, tens of thousands of high level, and other, criminals, many of whom are murderers and people of a very violent nature.”The post called returning Tren de Aragua gang members to Venezuela “a big task.”“In addition, Venezuela has been very hostile to the United States and the Freedoms which we espouse,” it added.“Therefore, any Country that purchases Oil and/or Gas from Venezuela will be forced to pay a Tariff of 25% to the United States on any Trade they do with our Country,” Trump’s post continued. The tariffs are slated to go into effect on April 2.“Please let this notification serve to represent that the Department of Homeland Security, Border Patrol, and all other Law Enforcement Agencies within our Country have been so notified,” the post read. The New York Times reported that the U.S. and China have led Venezuelan oil purchases in recent months, with India and Spain buying smaller volumes. With Venezuelan oil making up a slim percentage of China’s imports, Jorge León, a Rystad Energy research analyst, told the Times that he expects China will seek alternative sources to dodge the additional tariffs. On Saturday, Venezuela announced that it had reached an agreement with the Trump administration to resume repatriation flights. Nicolas Maduro’s regime had previously refused to take back Venezuelan citizens, briefly prompting Trump to deport violent gang members to El Salvador instead.Jorge Rodríguez, the president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, stated, “We have agreed with the U.S. government to resume the repatriation of Venezuelan migrants with an initial flight tomorrow, Sunday.”Rodríguez claimed that Venezuela reached the deal to allow “the return of our compatriots to their nation with the safeguard of their Human Rights.”“Migrating is not a crime, and we will not rest until we achieve the return of all those who require it and until we rescue our brothers kidnapped in El Salvador,” he added.Sunday’s deportation flight carried 199 Venezuelan nationals, including alleged Tren de Aragua gang members, back to their home country. Maduro claimed that Venezuela had resumed the repatriation flights “to rescue and release migrants from U.S. prisons.”He slammed the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, for accepting 238 deported Venezuelan nationals. “You guarantee their health and, sooner rather than later, you have to hand them over and release them, because they are kidnapped,” he declared.Like Blaze News? UPenn fires anti-Israel lecturer after Trump shuts down $175 million in funding

The University of Pennsylvania fired a controversial lecturer after President Donald Trump shut down $175 million of federal funding to the school. Dwayne Booth was a communications lecturer at the Annenberg School for Communication, but he was also known for producing grossly anti-Semitic cartoons criticizing Israel by comparing it to Nazi Germany. 'This is nothing more than a hollow pretext to target our community.' On Friday, Booth said that he had been fired from the post and jokingly compared himself to Jesus Christ and Malcolm X over the decision. "I was informed that the reason for the termination was budgetary, which I think is the same reason they gave to Jesus just before they crucified him, and Malcolm X just before they shot him, and what they told Eugene Debs, Susan B. Anthony, and Lenny Bruce just before jailing them. I jest, of course," he wrote. Trump had shut down federal funding to the university over its refusal to follow his executive order restricting biological males from competing in women's sports. Booth went on to accuse the university of capitulating to "MAGA bullies" in order to shut down dissenting speech."The reality — and something that, unfortunately, is not unique to Penn — is that colleges and universities nationwide have been way too complicit with the largely Republican-led efforts to target students and faculty members engaged in any and all speech rendered in support of trans/black/immigrant, and women’s rights, free speech, the independent press, academic freedom, and medical research," Booth added, "speech that also voices bold criticism of right-wing nationalism, genocide, apartheid, fascism, and specifically the Israeli assault on Palestine."Booth had been secretly publishing the offensive cartoons under the name "Mr. Fish" before he was outed by the Washington Free Beacon. The university's interim president had initially refused to fire Booth despite describing the cartoons as "reprehensible." The funding cuts were denounced by Philadelphia City Council Jamie Gauthier, whose district includes the university. "These funds have nothing to do with transgender student athletes — this is nothing more than a hollow pretext to target our community," wrote Gauthier. "What Trump is really doing is threatening tens of thousands of jobs, our hospitals, lifesaving research projects, educational programs for underserved youth, and so much more."The university did not respond to a request for comment from the Beacon.Like Blaze News?
