A group of atypical Gallic graves with the deceased buried in a seated position have been unearthed in Dijon, southern France. While they have not all been individually dated yet, they generally date to the La Tène period (450-25 B.C.). Archaeologists with France’s National Institute for Preventive Archaeology (INRAP) made the discovery in an excavation of the former garden of the Corderliers convent, less than 400 feet from the site where Gallic and Roman remains were found in the 1990s. The oldest archaeological layer revealed 13 individuals buried in circular pits about three feet in diameter. The deceased were all adults buried seated on the floor of the pits with their backs leaning against the eastern side and their heads facing west. Their hands were placed on their pelvises or femurs, arms supported against their torsos. Their legs were bent to fit the space. The pits were regularly spaced and arranged in a straight south-north line. No grave goods were found, except for one black stone armring on the elbow of one individual. The style of the bracelet dates to between 300 and 200 B.C., but based on the few examples of seated burial groupings known, archaeologists believe the burials were took place throughout the entire La Tène period. Only about a dozen of these sites are known, nine of them in France, three in Switzerland, and all of them were located near aristocratic dwellings and/or religious sanctuaries, not in or near traditional necropolises. Two seated burials in circular pits were discovered during the nearby excavations in the 1990s, as was a space from the late Gallic period that contained the remains of numerous animals. The articulated skeletons of whole dogs, sheep and pigs were unearthed there, suggesting the presence of a religious sanctuary at the site. Despite the remoteness of these sites, concordances are repeated: these burial structures are installed at the edge of settlements; the individuals concerned are adults whose sex, when determined, is male. In addition, the uniformity of the positions (the same orientation, the careful arrangement of the corpse) recall the stone or metal figures of crouching or even sitting cross-legged dated between the end of La Tène and the High Empire; these burials evoke a practice probably intended for particular subjects. The excavation also uncovered a later Gallo-Roman necropolis dating to the 1st century A.D. that appears to have been dedicated to the burial of very young children. The remains of 22 individuals were found, all of whom probably died before their first birthdays. They were laid to rest on their backs or on their sides inside cist graves or wooden coffins. Only the iron nails survive from the latter. This was typical of Roman burial practices at the time. While adults were usually cremated, children younger than one were not; they placed in a wooden or stone coffers, or if small enough, inside in a high-sided ceramic vessel.
