California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday that an entertainment and sports executive with ties to child sex predator Jeffrey Epstein will help lead a fire recovery initiative in Los Angeles County. Casey Wasserman, along with Lakers legend Magic Johnson and Dodgers co-owner Mark Walter, were tapped by Newsom to lead the new private sector philanthropic group LA Rises, The Los Angeles Times reported. The philanthropic group will focus on working with business leaders and state and local officials to rebuild areas devastated by the fires that broke out earlier this month. Newsom and other Democratic leaders in California have been criticized for their response to the fires that have damaged or destroyed thousands of homes and businesses and killed nearly 30 people in Los Angeles County. Wasserman, also the 2028 L.A. Olympic chairman, said LA Rises will play an important role in the restoration for decades to come. “The private sector has to come together, both operationally and philanthropically, as part of the rebuild and in many ways, the rebirth of L.A.,” he said. “This process and this journey we’re about to start with LA Rises is not about the next month or the next year. He was pictured with Epstein and convicted sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell in front of Epstein’s private jet, nicknamed the “Lolita Express.” Wasserman was also accused of having multiple affairs with women on his staff while he was married to Laura Ziffren. He allegedly sent women lavish gifts, including vehicles and designer items, before unexpectedly dumping them. “When he dumped me I was in shock and disbelief that he could go from 100 to zero in just hours,” one woman told The Daily Mail last year. “I truly think he underestimates the pain and long-term damage he causes women like me who believed him.” Wasserman is accused of pursuing romantic relationships with his former secretary and two of his former flight attendants. Ziffren filed for divorce in 2021. The entertainment and sports executive also has ties to powerful California Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Vice President Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff. Wasserman’s firm represents athletes, actors, and music artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, Brad Pitt, Russell Crowe, and Giancarlo Stanton.

The White House anticipates that between 5 and 10 percent of federal employees will take buyouts, leading to a savings of $100 billion annually, it said in a memo to Republican allies obtained by The Daily Wire. The Trump administration on Tuesday offered deferred resignations, allowing employees to get paid through September if they decide to leave by February 6. The memo said the purpose of the offer was “to make sure that all federal workers are on board with the new administration’s plan to have federal employees in office.” Citing a Daily Wire report, it said “We’re five years past COVID and just 6 percent of federal employees work full-time in office. That is unacceptable.” The offer sent to all employees described the deferred resignation as a way for employees who are accustomed to working from home and do not want to change their routine to be exempted from a return-to-the-office mandate. It said they could continue in some form of remote job, or might be placed on leave, until September 30. But the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) later sweetened the offer to be more like a straight buyout, publishing a FAQ that said people who took the deal would not be expected to do any work, except in rare cases. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained the justification for the buyout in a statement: American taxpayers pay for the salaries of federal government employees, and therefore deserve employees working on their behalf who actually show up to work in our wonderful federal buildings, also paid for by taxpayers. If they don’t want to work in the office and contribute to making America great again, then they are free to choose a different line of work, and the Trump Administration will provide a very generous payout of 8 months. The offer gives federal employees ample time to find a new job in the private sector, assuming they have marketable skills. It avoids impediments to firing federal employees, like union contracts and appeals. It also gives an easy and appealing out to federal employees who object to working for President Donald Trump, leaving him with a workforce less likely to subvert his initiatives. The offer to employees, titled “Fork in the Road,” noted that there is no certainty that those who don’t choose the buyout will remain employed. “If you choose to remain in your current position, we thank you for your renewed focus on serving the American people to the best of your abilities and look forward to working together as part of an improved federal workforce. At this time, we cannot give you full assurance regarding the certainty of your position or agency but should your position be eliminated you will be treated with dignity and will be afforded the protections in place for such positions,” it said.

Democratic strategist Jenna Arnold claimed on Tuesday that President Donald Trump’s administration would really start to see blowback for stricter immigration and deportation policies when it became clear that no one was around to pick berries for smoothies. Arnold joined a panel discussion on CNN’s “NewsNight” hosted by Abby Phillip, where she lodged her objection after Republican commentator Scott Jennings suggested that employers should be held responsible for hiring those who were not in the country legally. Former Trump administration official Bill Stepien agreed with Jennings, adding, “And I don’t want to hear that they’re doing work that no one else will do. Talk to guys in the building trades, plumbers, contractors —” “Picking strawberries,” Arnold interrupted then. “I mean, like I can’t wait, I can’t wait, I can’t wait until American women can’t get blueberries for their smoothies.” “I cannot wait until there is a full crackdown on all small businesses, as if that’s going to be the solution to the immigration problem. It is just going to put immigration-related issues further into the darker corners,” Arnold complained. “We’re not going to see them, it’s just going to become even harder to solve the problem. It doesn’t make sense to punish individuals and people when there is a broken system.” “Well, I mean look, I think if you came here illegally and you knowing you came — you know, you did it,” Jennings pushed back. “You know you broke the law. And the second priority is people with existing deportation orders. I think that’s the vast majority of what’s going to go on, you know, for the next couple of years. And I don’t think that’s going to have any impact on the economy at all.”

After five years, the total number of Chequered Skippers has increased yearly. The latest count was 350 butterflies. Although not entirely out of danger, the initial program success has the recovery team hopeful. Wildlife recovery programs have assisted in restoring numbers for the California Condor.
