Firefighters Heroically Save Man Trying to Rescue His Dog from Icy Boston Lake in Dramatic Video

From Massachusetts comes a double rescue from under the ice of a frozen lake after a man and his dog found themselves trapped. Walking beside Lake Waban in Wellesley, Ed Berger was enjoying a nippy afternoon with his dogs Tommy and Oscar, when Tommy saw some birds alighting on the lake’s frozen surface and ran […] The post Firefighters Heroically Save Man Trying to Rescue His Dog from Icy Boston Lake in Dramatic Video appeared first on Good News Network.

The End of ESG

“Sustainability” investments became popular a few years back. So-called experts said companies shouldn’t just focus on profit. They should put more effort into being “nice.” Funds pushing ESG, or environmental, social, and governance, were all the rage. Giant investment firms like BlackRock pressured companies to hire more women and minorities. CEO Larry Fink announced, “All investments are going to be looked through sustainability.” But “sustainability” is a mostly meaningless word. Parnassus Investments claimed it helped meet United Nations sustainability goals of “nutrition” and “sanitation” by investing in U.S. Foods and Clorox. Starbucks phased out plastic straws while adding lids that used more plastic. BP rebranded itself as “Beyond Petroleum.” Wisely, it mostly invested in petroleum. Former Vice President Al Gore made money peddling climate change hysteria. He created “sustainability investment funds,” claiming “sustainability factors … actually enhance returns!” His funds did enhance Gore’s own returns; he made millions. But over the past three years, his “sustainable” fund underperformed the stock market. Recently the fund managers admitted they “made investment mistakes.” Most funds promoting “sustainable investment” did worse than the market. So, why did trillions of dollars pour into such funds? “Because of pressures,” says Matt Cole, CEO of Strive Investments, in my new video. “Their largest clients are blue states’ pension [funds] like CalPERS and the New York pension [fund] who put pressure on them: ‘Adopt these agendas or you’re going to lose us as your largest customer!’” CalPERS still brags about “mitigating climate risk” and adding “climate-conscious board members” to Exxon’s board. Presidential Climate Envoy John Kerry pompously bullied banks: “They will invest into climate-related efforts,” he intoned. Today, banks and even BlackRock are running from sustainability nonsense. “What you’re seeing,” says Cole, “is ESG funds shuttering at record speed … and they’re not apologizing.” Progressives never do. This fad didn’t just hurt investors; it hurt companies that America needs. America needs high-performance computer chips. Intel was once the leading manufacturer of such chips. But now, even as Congress gives Intel billions in taxpayer handouts, the company is cutting thousands of jobs. Why? While Intel’s competitors innovated, Intel obsessed about “sustainability.” Intel’s website lists endless ESG goals like “environmental, health, wellness, and safety programs to care for people and the planet.” It even brags about “green software” … whatever that is. That’s a lot of energy spent not making the best chip. When companies spend time sucking up to politicians rather than innovating, they often decline. Intel’s stock fell 60% last year. Fortunately, today more companies are focusing on basic capitalism–producing better products for less money. Ford recently announced it will no longer require employees to take LGBTQ advocacy group surveys. USA Today reports that Lowe’s will reduce its participation with the Human Rights Campaign to “narrow its focus to safe and affordable housing.” When I was co-host of “20/20,” I wondered what would happen when Disney bought ABC. Not much changed for a while. But a few years later, after repeatedly rejecting videos I proposed about problems with Obamacare, ABC fired me. Still later, I laughed as I watched Disney go full woke. The president of the entertainment content division said, “We have many, many, many LGBTQIA characters in our stories, and yet we don’t have enough leads.” Disney’s television animation producer added, “I was just, wherever I could, adding queerness.” But many such movies flopped. “The Marvels,” featuring a Muslim teen and black female sidekick, lost $237 million. “Lightyear,” featuring the first same-sex kiss in a Disney-Pixar movie, lost $106 million. “Elemental,” featuring a nonbinary character (a lake with earrings), didn’t even reach $30 million it’s opening week. Now Disney’s quietly scaling back. More companies have started to recognize a need to focus on their core business rather than virtue-signaling. “It’s the beginnings of an unwind,” says Cole, “that I think is going to be critical for us to achieve success.” I wonder why they were so dumb in the first place. Trump’s Back in Power. So, Is the ‘Fascist Threat’ Real or Imagined?

Trump’s Back in Power. So, Is the ‘Fascist Threat’ Real or Imagined?

If you really believed former Vice President Kamala Harris and her media allies, the United States has just inaugurated a fascist dictator, Donald Trump, as president of the United States. Now, you might fail to appreciate the gravity of this moment after watching former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and a friendly Trump “yukking it up” with former President Barack Obama, a paragon of “progressive” politics. Given Team Biden’s “Trump-as Hitler” narrative, Obama’s cordial interaction with Trump—democracy’s supposed “existential threat”—was puzzling.     But what do you know?  Not much, according to the leftist cognoscenti. After all, we have it on good authority that the American electoral majority is made up of “garbage” and that many are “deplorables”; the kind of folks who, over a three-year period, were unable to grasp then-Rep. Adam Schiff’s “compelling evidence” that Trump was secretly colluding with the Kremlin. Today, in the wake of the 2024 election, most of us remain trapped in ignorance of the imminent “fascist threat.” Democracy dies, not so much in darkness as The Washington Post insists, but in stupidity. So, perhaps we could all benefit from a little education on the topic. There is, after all, rich political science literature on Italian Fascism and German National Socialism. Like communism and socialism, fascism is “collectivism,” where the individual is completely subordinated to the group, and the “rights” of the individual are subordinated to the absolute “rights” of the group—with the group being identified as “The People,” “The Party,” “The Nation” or “The Race.”   And while there have been various fascist movements in France, Spain, Eastern Europe, and even the United Kingdom, the clearest expression of fascism in power—a marriage of theory and practice—was manifest in Italy and Germany in the 1930s: The Italian regime of Benito Mussolini and the German dictatorship of Adolf Hitler. Beyond the primacy of power exercised by a single leader in a hypernationalist single party, the fascist agenda in each country was shaped by the unique historical and cultural conditions in each country. In Fascist Italy, for example, antisemitism and racism were minimal, and Mussolini’s efforts to achieve anything like totalitarian control was undercut by pervasive Catholicism, loyalty to the monarchy, and Italy’s rich family-oriented cultural life. For a governing program, however, the German and Italian variants share some basic ideological assumptions, notably the following:   The State Is Absolute In his book, “The Political and Social Doctrine of Fascism” (1933), Mussolini was explicit: “The foundation of fascism is its conception of the state, its character, its duty, its aim. Fascism conceives of the state as an absolute in comparison, with which all individuals or groups are relative.” Likewise, on Nov. 8, 1933, Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda minister, declared, that “our party has always aspired to the totalitarian state … . The goal of the revolution must be a totalitarian state pervading all spheres of public life.” Detailing the German variant of fascism in “Behemoth: The Structure and Practice of National Socialism” (Oxford University Press, 1944), Franz Neumann summarizes the fascist doctrine: “In theory, the state has unlimited power. It could legally do almost anything; it could expropriate anybody.”    Corporate Power Consolidated in Service to the State Fascism—which comprehensively suppresses personal, political, and economic liberty—is sometimes described as the ideology of the Corporate State. A central goal of fascist economic policy is to consolidate the production of major goods and services into large corporate cartels—a form of “monopoly capitalism”—eliminating those businesses, especially small firms, that government central planners consider inefficient. Germany’s corporate titans, often to their bitter regret, backed Hitler. This broad policy of corporate consolidation and hostility to free markets was a feature of both Italian and German fascism. In his book, “European Fascism” (Random House, 1968), S.J. Woolf, a professor of Italian history at Britain’s University of Reading, reports that, under Mussolini, “The tendency of capitalism towards monopolies was to be encouraged, because it increased productivity and so the strength of the state.” Likewise, describing the Nazi policy in “Behemoth,” Neumann observes, “The federal minister of economics was given the power to create compulsory cartels, to compel outsiders to attach themselves to existing cartels, to prohibit the erection of new enterprises and the extension of existing enterprises either in size or capacity, and to regulate the capacity of existing plants. No indemnification is allowed for damages arising out of such acts.” Command Economy: Central Planning, Price Controls With fascism, central planners not only prescribe the quantity and quality of the production of goods and services, but also the permissible limits of profits and targets of investment. Such tasks require a large, powerful, and deeply intrusive government bureaucracy. On Oct. 29, 1936, Hitler’s Germany adopted a “Four-Year Plan” designed to increase industrial production—in preparation for war. In tandem with this production control, the Nazi regime adopted a comprehensive system of wage and price controls. In the language of the plan, according to Neumann, a “federal commissioner for price formation” had responsibility “[f]or the control of price formation of goods and services of every kind, especially for all needs of daily life, for the whole agricultural and industrial production, and for the transportation of goods and commodities of every kind, and for other compensations.” As Neumann further notes, the Nazi price-control regime governed “… rents; transportation rates; fees for doctors, dentists, and lawyers; admission tickets of theaters, cinemas and concerts; dues to organizations; postal fees and railroad fares; commissions and school fees; and the whole sector of agricultural prices with the exception of labor, which is subject to specific regulation.” Hitler’s Germany enforced its granular economic price-control system with tough criminal penalties. On June 3, 1939, violation of the bureaucracy’s price controls, either by intention or through negligence, was punishable with imprisonment of up to five years. Needless to say, the National Socialists in Germany destroyed the independence of the German trade unions and created a “Labor Front” to execute the regime’s labor policy. In Nazi labor policy, Neumann concluded, “The worker has no rights.”   The State Must Exercise Total Social Control With fascism, there is to be no personal or social life outside of the state. Commenting on the Italian variant, Woolf observes, “All private freedom, whether of individuals or associations, was only acceptable if approved of by the state.”, “All private freedom, whether of individuals or associations, was only acceptable if approved of by the state.” In “Hitler’s Social Revolution: Class and Status in Nazi Germany, 1933-1939” (Doubleday & Co., 1966), David Schoenbaum cites Robert Ley, head of the German Labor Front, declaring in 1938 that one’s only “private” affair was sleep: “There are no more private citizens. The time when anybody could do or not do what he pleased is past.” That comprehensive social control, of course, ended up racializing the laws governing marriage and the family, promoting abortion and sterilization of the officially “undesirable” and the euthanasia of the mentally and physically “unfit,” replacing childhood education with ideological indoctrination, while engineering the mass ethnic cleansing of society, primarily millions of Jews, in the unspeakable horrors of the Holocaust. Apologies, Anyone? Trump has clearly articulated his foreign and domestic policy agenda, including safeguarding freedom of speech and religion, freeing up market forces, reducing the regulatory overreach of the executive branch, and taming the excessive (and too often abusive) power of an unelected bureaucracy. Given the crystal clarity of his policy agenda, it’s hard to imagine anyone seriously charging Trump with being a “fascist.” That’s mere name-calling and reflects little more than a gross ignorance of what fascism actually entails, a deep personal hostility to the man, or a simple politically motivated malevolence. There is nothing inherently “fascist” about drawing large and enthusiastic crowds to campaign events at Madison Square Garden or anywhere else; about basing American foreign policy on the primacy of American national interest; about pursuing energy independence to lower Americans’ gas and energy costs; or about enforcing democratically enacted immigration laws.    If a word can mean anything, logically, it means nothing. Back in 1968, H.R. Trevor-Roper, a prominent British historian, in an essay on “The Phenomenon of Fascism,” noted that the word “fascist” is “… either precisely dated or a meaningless term of abuse.” In the case of Trump, that calumny has spewed from the mouths and pens of practitioners of gutter politics, leftist university professors, Hollywood bubbleheads, historically illiterate campus radicals, and cable news commentators. Now that Trump is back in the White House, after surviving two assassination attempts and achieving the most impressive comeback in American political history, he has taken his sacred oath of office to uphold and defend the Constitution and see that the nation’s laws, including its immigration laws, are faithfully executed. Not to worry. Chances are Trump will do a much better job upholding the Constitution than his predecessor, and hysterical liberals will not be herded into concentration camps. Many never really believed in their own propaganda anyway.   Meanwhile, the media elites and the leftist politicians who have poisoned our politics with the irresponsible “fascist” rhetoric should apologize to the president. But don’t lose your “private” sleep over it. They won’t.  The post Trump’s Back in Power. So, Is the ‘Fascist Threat’ Real or Imagined? appeared first on The Daily Signal.

Abandoned Dog Who Almost Got Hit By Oncoming Traffic Finds Forever Home

A dog that was abandoned two days before Thanksgiving in front of Norfolk’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and almost got hit by oncoming traffic finally finds her forever home. On November 26, the animal shelter shared the heartbreaking moment a dog was abandoned by her owner, tied to a loose piece of gutter, ran into oncoming traffic, and almost got hit by cars. “Today, our hearts are heavy as we share this disturbing sight,” Norfolk SPCA wrote in a Facebook post along with a CCTV footage of a woman parking in front of the shelter to abandon her dog. The animal shelter explains, “A sweet little puppy was found abandoned and tied to a pole outside our facility while we were closed. Her owner abandoned her and tied her to a loose piece of a gutter at the front step.” After being overcome by flight or fight, the dog broke free from the loose piece of gutter she was tied to, ran into oncoming traffic, and almost got hit by cars. “Good Samaritans saved her life. This poor pup had no choice but to wait for someone to help, and we are so grateful that she was found safe,” Norfolk SPCA wrote. Norfolk SPCA did everything they can to ensure that the dog received all the necessary care, attention, and love she needed. “We believe every animal deserves a loving home, and we can’t help but feel the pain of how this little one was treated,” Norfolk SPCA wrote. The story went viral, even reaching local television news. And right before Christmas, on December 11, the dog found her way to her forever home. The dog’s new owner, Sharon Tomosovich calls it her ‘Christmas Miracle’. And talking to Wavy, she said, “I wasn’t actively looking, but I thought, one day the right dog will come along, and she just seemed like she was the right one.” Tomosovich reveals that she saw the viral clip of the dog getting abandoned by her previous owner. “It broke my heart to see how someone could do something like that to her, or any animal, that there are other options,” Tomosovich said. “And anyone that has a dog that they can’t keep, or can’t take care [of], just please — there are other options not to tie them to a gutter and walk away. She’s so lucky to be alive, and so many dogs aren’t.” Wavy reveals that SPCA named the dog Grace, but in the spirit of Christmas, Tomosovich renamed her to Holly Grace. “It seemed like an omen to me because I had just lost my dog of 13 years, and her name was Grace,” Tomosovich revealed. Tomosovich reveals that Holly Grace laid down on her lap almost immediately. “And I just knew. I think we both knew that she’s where she needs to be, with me. And I’m able to be home with her now, and she’s lot lots of love, and lots of attention.”

Getting Closer to God

Irrespective of which religion is being considered, the concept of God as the creator is linked to the origin of the Universe and everything within it. This means that if our scientists had a quantum-gravity recipe for the ingredients and the heating process that resulted in the birth of our Universe through the womb of the Big Bang, then they would be on their way to acquiring the professional expertise of God. The missing component might be a particle collider that can create the necessary conditions for making a baby Universe. Are there any alien scientists in the Milky-Way with this knowledge? As of now, we have limited clues as to the actual process that gave birth to our Universe and so the endless possibilities remain a matter of belief. The basic principles underlying quantum-gravity are unclear because the enormous energy density that was realized at our cosmic beginning cannot be replicated in the observable Universe. Our only hope is to detect a gravitational wave signal from cosmic inflation or a thermal graviton background from the Planck time. A higher level of intelligence that processed much more data about the Universe might have gotten closer to the idealized wisdom of God. For the first time in human history, we are about to encounter superhuman intelligence in the form of A.I., an abbreviation for either artificial intelligence — our technological product, or alien intelligence — from an extraterrestrial origin. The commercial benefits of the first form of A.I. are widely recognized, as it represents a tool that could outperform humans in processing vast amounts of data over a short time without suffering from the psychological weaknesses of humans. The second idealized quality of God is omnipresence. In principle, if the Universe was created by quantum-gravity scientists and it enables the birth of quantum-gravity scientists, then the cycle of Universes born within Universes may continue forever. In the context of longevity, repairing our body from damages or malfunctions so that it would never die sounds like an easier problem to solve than creating the Planck energy density so as to give birth to a baby Universe in the laboratory. In fact, the synthetic biologist, George Church, suggested in my recent conversation with him that the two of us might never die and could plan on follow-up conversations in a thousand or a million years. Longevity is a favored trait by Darwinian selection for “survival of the fittest.” The most advanced scientists in the Milky-Way galaxy are likely to be those who never die. If astronauts could live for millions of years, they would be able to engage in interstellar travel using conventional rockets based on chemical propulsion. Cosmic time is measured in billions of years. When in summer 1950 Enrico Fermi asked: “Where is everybody?”, he based this question on the knowledge he harvested from merely 49 years of life on this Earth. Fermi-like astronauts who travel through interstellar space and visit exoplanets would be far more knowledgeable in addressing this question. They might find plenty of microbes in extraterrestrial swamps, animals climbing on exo-planet vegetation, as well as ruins of technological civilizations that lost their livelihoods in a nuclear or biological war, through the loss of their atmosphere, through an asteroid impact or as a natural casualty of the brightening of their host star. Living longer brings the benefit of acquiring more data on our cosmic neighborhood, allowing us to better adapt to it. A Fermi-like astronaut with millions of years of cosmic experience might say: “Here is everybody!” In a recent meeting with a group of theologians, I was asked about the religious implications of finding extraterrestrial intelligence. I noted that I have two daughters and my love for the one born second did not take away from the love that I have for the first one. It would be degrading to consider God as a parent who can only attend to one child. Knowing about your siblings and recognizing those who are better than you, should only enhance the sense of awe and appreciation of your parents. Figuring out our cosmic roots, knowing more about our cosmic home and its residents, and not dying, will all bring us closer to the idealized mindset of God, as described in traditional religious texts. What we do with the immense power that comes with this knowledge is up to us. As soon as scientists mastered nuclear physics, it became clear that we can use it for good — as a source of clean energy, or for evil — as a weapon. Similarly, A.I. can be used as a means for improving our quality of life or as a weapon with devastating consequences for mental health or national security. Life can be a self-fulfilling prophecy, so it is better to stay optimistic about the future. We could do better if we focus on what really matters: wisdom based on data and longevity. These are worthy substitutes for the popular “likes” that many seek on social media and for attempts to degrade the happiness of other humans who do not agree with us. From a cosmic perspective, these toxic pursuits are a waste of our feeble life on this planet. Are future humans more likely to be kind and generous if they live forever and benefit from augmenting their intelligence with A.I.? This is not a philosophical question. A Fermi-like astronaut can conduct a happiness-poll and quantify the statistics of civilizations like ours over the past few billion years. Are those who acquired longevity and wisdom happier? My bet is a definitive “Yes!” This is why I maintain a healthy lifestyle and look up rather than down with the Galileo Project observatories. My hope is that finding a smarter student in our class of technological civilizations would inspire us to do better. The post Getting Closer to God appeared first on Anomalien.com.
