A total eclipse crossed the country this week in a display of natural wonder. Rather than seize the opportunity for an engaging science lesson‚ hundreds of school districts with several hundred thousand students decided to close for the day‚ many citing safety concerns that students might accidentally look at the eclipse without proper eye protection.Even worse than failing to teach students about science‚ the decision to close schools for the eclipse teaches students to have irrational fears about their safety. If we want to understand why young people are experiencing alarming levels of anxiety and having difficulty developing into capable adults‚ all we have to do is look at examples like the excess cautiousness exhibited by schools regarding the eclipse.To put in perspective how irrational it is for schools to close during the eclipse out of safety concerns‚ lets review how incredibly unlikely it is that the eclipse would harm anyone. It is true that people should wear protective eyeglasses when looking directly at the sun during an eclipse. But the instances in which people stare at the sun without protection and cause permanent and serious damage to their eyes are so rare that they almost round down to zero.In 1999‚ a total solar eclipse crossed the southern part of England‚ a country with 99 million people. An article in the British Journal of Medicine reports that a total of 14 people experienced any eye injuries from that event‚ and those were mostly minor and temporary.In fact‚ an earlier study of an eclipse in Turkey found that the handful of injuries were so ephemeral that only 10% of those with damage had permanent visual loss to the extent that they were not able to read a car number [license] plate at 25 yards. The only serious injury documented from the England eclipse occurred after someone looked at the sun for around 20 minutes without protection.If schools were unable to distribute the protective eyewear that was widely available and avoid having students stare at the sun without that protection for 20 minutes‚ they would be so lacking in behavioral control that they should be permanently closed‚ rather than just close for that day.Its worth noting that students could also damage their eyes if they stab them repeatedly with pencils. Presumably‚ schools have sufficient behavioral control to avoid closing over concerns about pencil-induced blindness.Despite the fact that the threat posed by the eclipse to student health is about as remote as that posed by pencils‚ hundreds of school districts across the country decided to close for safety reasons.In Arkansas alone‚ 104 school districts with 163‚954 students‚ or about 35% of all students in the state‚ closed for the eclipse. In the state of New York‚ more than 200 school districts closed. In Ohio‚ the number of school districts that closed also exceeded 100‚ including schools in Cleveland‚ the states second-most populous city. Another 100 school districts closed in Texas‚ Indiana‚ and Pennsylvania. Even in Louisiana‚ which was not in the path of the total eclipse‚ there were still school districts that closed‚ with many citing safety concerns.People sometimes say‚ You cant be too careful‚ but the truth is you can be. Excessive cautiousness promotes a fragility among young people that hinders their ability to develop as capable adults. As both Jonathan Haidt and Abigail Shrier have documented in their recent books‚ crippling fear of the broader world is making it less likely that young people physically gather and socialize‚ driving them into dangerously isolated and distorted virtual lives.Excessive anxiety is making it less likely for young people to get drivers licenses‚ less likely to date‚ and ultimately less likely to form new families with their own children.We cant lay blame for all of this on the decision of more than 500 school districts this week to close for the eclipse. But we can see these closures as an indication of how public schools are failing our children by modeling excessive and irrational concerns about safety. Its this same excessive and irrational caution that led so many schools to close for long stretches of the COVID-19 pandemic‚ with disastrous consequences for both academic and social development.During both the eclipse and COVID-19‚ public schools made decisions for the convenience of the adults who work in them without concern for their students or families. Handing out protective eyewear‚ walking outside to look at the eclipse‚ and having to remind students to be sure to use the glasses can seem like a hassle to unmotivated teachers and administrators. They similarly hate going on field trips to visit historical sites or cultural institutions. As they see it‚ things could only go wrong if they leave the safe confines of the classroom.But most families do not want their children raised by schools surrounded by virtual bubble wrap. They want their children to develop into capable and independent adults.If we want to prevent the next generation from becoming paralyzed with anxiety and irrational concerns for safety‚ we need to shift power from excessively cautious and unmotivated public schools to parents. Some high-profile Arizona Republicans had decried news on Tuesday that the states Supreme Court had upheld an 1864 law protecting almost all unborn babies in the state‚ except when the mothers life is at risk. Senate candidate Kari Lake‚ former Gov. Doug Ducey‚ Rep. David Schweikert‚ and Rep. Juan Ciscomani‚ were among the Republicans who condemned the news and suggested that pro-abortion legislation was needed to rectify the situation. In the earlier decades of the Public Broadcasting Service‚ conservatives could feel that they had some fraction of a platform on William F. Buckley Jr.s Firing Line. That PBS presence no doubt spurred the makers of the American Masters series to offer a two-hour program titled The Incomparable Mr. Buckley. In the opening credits‚ they typed in Insufferable first‚ then crossed it out. That word reflects the view of the political and financial base of PBS.Fans of Buckley might enjoy the video clips of Buckley jousting with the elites in the 20th century‚ but the style of this show was annoying in that whenever experts were speaking‚ they were entirely off-screen.This documentary by Barak Goodman is neither a valentine to Buckley‚ nor a fair and balanced recitation of his life and times. Conservatives are interviewed‚ but the final product carries the distinct odor of PBS liberal arrogance.In the tainted timeline of this program‚ Buckley triumphs with the election of Ronald Reagan and then the end of the Cold War‚ and then its all downhill for the troglodytes on the Right. Historian Geoffrey Kabaservice speaks over footage of Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh about conservatism being taken to an extreme as the Republicans took Congress in 1994.Gingrich‚ he claims‚ teaches Republicans to talk in a new way about Democrats being a source of infection and disease and disloyalty and decay. Then theres footage of Limbaugh making fun of the ugly broads of feminism.Over ominous music implying villainy‚ Kabaservice argues‚ Buckley did endorse Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh. At some level‚ he understood that politics requires emotion‚ as well as intellect‚ and maybe it requires dark emotions and even hatreds.This would match the spirit of PBS Firing Line with Margaret Hoover‚ where the liberal Republican puts on guests like journalist Tim Alberta‚ who recently denounced the Limbaugh show as poisoning Christians with an unceasing stream of venom and ugliness and hostility‚ antagonism‚ hatred.Leftists have an annoying habit of thinking fear and loathing and ugliness and venom are somehow unique to the Republican half of America. They‚ by contrast‚ are apparently all sugar and spice and everything nice. Have they watched five minutes of The Reidout or The View? Both sides (and center-huggers like Kabaservice) are capable of love and hatred‚ comfort and fear‚ civility and incivility.But on PBS‚ they must locate experts to slam Buckley for tolerating and sometimes even encouraging some of the nastier‚ more extreme aspects on the Right by the end‚ it was clear the nastier forces had won out. Theres no name on screen to figure out whos the mudslinger here.PBS can never be judged for encouraging the nastier‚ more extreme aspects of the Left‚ because in their bubble‚ no one is ever nasty or extreme where they reside‚ in a perfect Eden of politics.Kabaservice returns for the final pitch on that dark side of the conservative movement‚ which was white Americans didnt like change (because they were racists‚ apparently): Buckley understood that it was part of his role to keep a lid on the dark energies that fueled the conservative movement‚ but not to repress them entirely‚ because it was those kind of resentments that he was drawing on that gave conservatism its power as a movement.Once again‚ PBS thinks the Democrats get their power from warm wellsprings of idealism and compassion. The Republicans get theirs from nurturing racism‚ sexism‚ homophobia‚ and xenophobia.Watching this program gives this conservative one overwhelming reaction: I want my involuntary contributions to PBS refunded. But the claim is there: Fact-checking is not censorship‚ a post on Poynter wants you to believe.This‚ despite the organization‚ which acts to certify fact-checkers via the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN)‚ having a project that has resulted in mass suppression of posts on Facebook.According to Facebook (Meta) CEO Mark Zuckerberg‚ posts that get fact-checked experience a 95% drop in clicks. In other words‚ even if this content is not outright removed‚ it is made virtually invisible. Thats censorship by any other name.So how in the world can Poynter claim that activities of those it certifies actually result in adding to the public debate rather than suppressing it?It can‚ and does. Meanwhile‚ a report recently published by Meta paints a different picture: the EU that was no doubt happy to share that fact-checking reduces users attempts to share posts by 47 and 38 percent on Facebook and Instagram‚ respectively.Of course‚ neither Meta nor the EU are offering this data as proof of negative and nefarious efforts resulting in censorship; instead they are treated simply as proof that Meta complies with EUs codes and other rules‚ also in the end producing more censorship.But‚ while patting itself on the back in these ways‚ Meta unwittingly managed to undermine the credibility of its own fact-checking partners.Theres a comical moment in the Poynter opinion piece (ostensibly‚ theres more than one).
