Harvards Plan to Host Segregated Graduation Ceremonies Attracts Pushback

In academic institutions‚ We have a system now thats broken‚saidRep. Burgess Owens‚ R-Utah‚ in a Fox News interview. On these campuses‚ we have an evil being taught. Its a virus. Its called DEI. The acronym stands for diversity‚ equity‚ and inclusion. Owens described DEI as a Marxist-based ideologythat [believes] there is an oppressor race and an oppressed race. And he made sure to emphasize that the Left has deemed the oppressors as whites and Jews.Last week‚ a Harvard law professorwrotea column for the schools paper‚ The Harvard Crimson‚ expressing his strong opposition to DEI.Randall L. Kennedy‚ the Michael R. Klein professor at Harvard Law School‚ argued that the practice of demanding [DEI] ought to be abandoned‚ both at Harvard and beyond. Kennedy added: I am a scholar on the Left committed to struggles for social justice. The realities surrounding mandatory DEI statements‚ however‚ make me wince. That appeal seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Despite the pleas of the professor‚ Harvard appears stuck in its identity politics ways. For instance‚ the Ivy League university is set to move forward with segregated commencement ceremoniescalled affinity celebrations. National Reviewreported: Harvard plans to hold a Disability Celebration‚ a Global Indigenous Celebration‚ an Asian American‚ Pacific Islander‚ Desi-American (APIDA) Celebration‚ a First Generation-Low Income Celebration‚ a Jewish Celebration‚ a Latinx Celebration‚ a Lavender Celebrationwhich refers to LGBT studentsa Black Celebration‚ a Veterans Celebration‚ and an Arab Celebration.Notably‚ Harvard only recently added its Jewish student population to this list shortly after beingcalled outfor the omission by Manhattan Institutes Christopher Rufo. Another observation people made is that Harvards white students get no such separate celebratory ceremony.Harvard DEI is simply out of control‚ Divinity School student Shabbos Kestenbaum said. He explained that Harvard not only fails to recognize the harmful ways in which Harvard DEI has contributed to issues such as campus antisemitism‚ but further marginalizes individuals into groups of race‚ ethnicity‚ and religion. Rep. Virginia Foxx‚ R-N.C.‚ chairwoman of the Education and Workforce Committee‚ agreed.Graduation ceremonies should unite students‚ Foxx said. Instead‚ Harvard is dividing its student body even further by playing into identity politics and radical DEI ideologies.Joseph Backholm‚ Family Research Councils senior fellow for biblical worldview and strategic engagement‚ commented to The Washington Stand: These decisions are rooted in a moral analysis that is focused not on what someone does but on who they are. Backholm explained that under DEI‚ Racial discrimination isnt always wrong‚ it just depends on who is doing it and why. If its done by the oppressed to the oppressors‚ then its good. If its being done by the oppressors to the oppressed‚ then its bad.He added: Its the same moral reasoning that results in sympathy for mass murder and mass rape conducted by Hamas. Because theyre identified by the Left as the oppressed‚ their wicked behavior is sanitized as resistance. What it comes down to‚ Backholm said‚ is this: Identity politics not only asks us to prioritize trivial characteristics like sex and ethnicity over meaningful things like character and competency‚ but it destroys our ability to do basic moral reasoning.Originally published by The Washington StandThe post Harvards Plan to Host Segregated Graduation Ceremonies Attracts Pushback appeared first on The Daily Signal.

During the War Years‚ Posters From the American Homefront Told You What to Do And What Not to Do

The First World War saw the first widespread use of propaganda to stir patriotic fervour‚ note Gill Saunders and Margaret Timmers in The Poster: A Visual History. The need to raise vast sums of money from the public purse to fund the war spawned numerous posters advertising war bonds and loans; countries on both sides of the conflict employed some of their best poster artists for this purpose. If it had worked in one world war‚ why not try it in another? In his two-volume Propaganda: The Art of Persuasion: World War II‚ Anthony Rhodes notes the barrage of posters produced by government agencies like the United States Office of War Information as well as private companies during the war. And‚ observe Saunders and Timmers‚ Both the British and the American governments strove to cement the idea of their national characteristics as unwaveringly plucky‚ with humour more likely to be employed than fearmongering. If you had any doubt about what you should be doingor not doingas an American to help the war effort‚ there was probably a poster that could point you in the right direction. Should you buy war bonds? (The answer was emphatically yes.) How about driving to work by yourself? (No! When you ride ALONE you ride with Hitler!) If you were a farmer‚ what should you produce? (Corn! Sugar beets! Milk!) Was it okay to chat about your work with that affable stranger at the bar? (Absolutely not! Loose talk can cost lives.) Colorfully eye-catching‚ the posters exhorted Americans to work harder‚ produce more war materiel‚ save gasoline and scrap metal‚ support their soldiers and sailors‚ and stop complaining about shortages. In one poster titled Of course I can‚a young woman clutches her home-jarred food and says‚ Im patriotic as can beAnd ration points wont worry me! (One thing that did not appear to be in short supply during the war was exclamation points.) Perhaps the poster that best distilled all the exhortations into one single message showed a bloodied soldier pointing at a battle going on behind him and exclaiming‚ More! More of everythingquick!

The Solar Eclipse Is Over‚ But Your Protective Glasses Are Still Useful

The 2024 North American total solar eclipse has come and passed. Now the spectacle is over‚ you might be wondering what to do with your solar eclipse glasses. The next total solar eclipse to cross North America is predicted to occur on August 23‚ 2044. Unless you plan on hanging on to your protective glasses for two decades‚ you might be thinking about chucking them in the trash. However‚ it';s possible for someone else to make good use of them.Astronomers Without Borders (AWB) runs a program that collects used solar eclipse glasses and distributes them to people who may not otherwise have a safe way to view the eclipse directly. You can head over to their website for more information on how to participate and for the location of donation centers across the country.Because of the way these eclipse glasses are manufactured‚ they are not very eco-friendly‚ so they would potentially end up in the landfill. Lets prevent that and put them to good use‚ and let others less fortunate around the world experience this wondrous celestial event safely‚"; Andrew Fazekas‚ a spokesperson for AWB‚ told KUT Austin. Its humbling to see so many organizations big and small coming together for this effort‚ Fazekas added.Following the ";Great American Eclipse"; in 2017‚ ABW sent tens of thousands of used solar eclipse glasses to South America‚ Asia‚ and Africa. The non-profit organization is now seeking donations to run the program after the 2024 total solar eclipse in North America. Its looking like 2024 eclipse will produce even more used glasses than the 2017 eclipse. Per NASA‚ an estimated 31.6 million people live along the solar eclipses path of totality this year‚ compared to 12 million in 2017. Lets hope those millions of spectators followed the guidance and wore protective eyewear (and didnt gaze directly into the Sun la Donald Trump).Bear in mind that you should double-check before reusing any solar eclipse glasses as some models cant be used if they';re more than three years old‚ according to NASA. After 2015‚ official solar eclipse glasses had to comply with regulations known as ISO 12312-2‚ ensuring this is no longer a problem. However‚ some older or fake models might not comply with these new rules. To make sure your eclipse glasses are legit and follow the new regulations‚ look at the frame for an ISO mark or see the American Astronomical Societys list of reputable vendors of solar filters and viewers.

These Are The Plants That Traditional Incan Communities Use For Medicine

A new study into the traditional medicine of Indigenous communities within the Incan heartland has revealed the plants that make up the unwritten pharmacopeia of this ancient Andean culture. After interviewing dozens of Quechua-speaking individuals in the mountains of Peru‚ researchers were able to identify 46 species of medicinal plants that are used to treat everything from diarrhea to the common cold.To some‚ the idea of using nature as a pharmacy may seem archaic and unsophisticated yet‚ as the study authors point out‚ traditional ethnobotany provides essential clues as to the biological impact of certain plants and often leads to the discovery of new drugs. This knowledge is rooted in accumulated practical knowledge and experiences over time by many ancient civilizations‚ they write in their manuscript‚ which at the time of writing is still undergoing peer review.Providing a concrete example‚ the researchers explain that a cure for malaria was developed from the compound artemisinin‚ which occurs naturally in sweet wormwood - a plant that features in traditional Chinese herbal medicine. This discovery earned Youyou Tu from the Republic of China the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2015‚ note the authors.Worldwide‚ some 80‚000 different species of flowering plant are used medicinally by an array of human cultures‚ and aligning this traditional knowledge with Western science is likely to yield further medical breakthroughs. To that end‚ the study authors traveled to the Peruvian district of Incahuasi‚ which translates to House of the Inca and takes its name from an ancient Indigenous city high in the Andes. To collect their data‚ the researchers interviewed 32 locals‚ all of whom relied on traditional herbal remedies as their first line of medical treatment. Four of the participants were herbal healers themselves‚ including one midwife.Of the 46 plants identified during the study‚ almost a third were from the daisy family‚ including several types of aster that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties due to the presence of ethyl acetate and hexane fractions. Within the local medical tradition‚ these particular plants are typically used to treat colds.Overall‚ 80 percent of plants from the daisy family were identified as remedies for infections‚ including those that cause earaches‚ stomach pains‚ and bronchitis.A further 15 percent of species came from the mint family‚ with the most common being a type of sage known locally as cutiquero. This particular species is used to treat a wide range of ailments‚ including influenza‚ common cold‚ diarrhea‚ headache‚ stomach pain‚ knee pain‚ and bleeding during childbirth. Another condition known simply as bad air which is related to cold or sudden temperature changes can also be soothed with this plant‚ according to the residents of Incahuasi. In total‚ around a quarter of the plants identified by participants are used to treat viral infections‚ while 5.8 percent are utilized to prevent complications during childbirth‚ and a further four percent help to alleviate altitude sickness. The study has been posted on the open publishing platform F1000Research.

Files of the Unexplained on Netflix: Who was Calvin Parker?

Netflixs new series‚ Files of the Unexplained‚ delves into the mysteries of our world through an eight-part documentary journey. The inaugural episode shines a spotlight on the unsettling and renowned alien abduction claim involving Calvin Parker‚ who‚ along with Charles Hickson‚ became the focal point of a chilling extraterrestrial encounter narrative. On the evening of October 11‚ 1973‚ in Pascagoula‚ Mississippi‚ Parker and Hickson experienced an event that would etch itself into UFO lore. While engaged in a quiet fishing trip‚ the pair encountered an unusual‚ oval-shaped craft adorned with blue lights‚ descending from the heavens. Accompanied by an odd buzzing noise‚ the vessel hovered just feet above the earth. From this mysterious craft emerged three entities‚ humanoid yet alien in form‚ each standing around five feet tall. Their faces were devoid of eyes‚ featuring only a narrow mouth‚ and their hands resembled the claws of a lobster‚ all moving with a mechanical gait. Parker recounted the harrowing moment when they were seized and taken aboard the UFO‚ propelled towards an intense luminosity. These things got to us. Two got a hold of Charlie‚ the other got a hold of me and they turned around and they was carrying us back up inside of what I know now is a UFO‚ a spaceship or whatever it was and we was going toward that big bright light‚ Parker later recalled.Aboard the alien ship‚ Parker and Hickson underwent an invasive examination. As suddenly as it began‚ the ordeal ceased‚ and the two found themselves once again on the beach‚ the UFO nowhere in sight‚ leaving no trace of the encounter.Despite skepticism‚ Hickson asserted the truth of their account until his passing in 2011‚ and Parker remained steadfast in his testimony until his death in 2023.Files of the Unexplained is available for streaming‚ offering all eight episodes on Netflix. The post Files of the Unexplained on Netflix: Who was Calvin Parker? appeared first on Anomalien.com.
