Vinny Appice recalls the love Ronnie James Dio had for his fans

Born in Brooklyn, New York City in 1957, the drummer Vinny Appice is the younger brother of Carmine Appice. He first achieved fame as a member of Black Sabbath, replacing the original member Bill Ward. He became a good friend of the singer Ronnie James Dio, who was part of the band at the time, also being part of his own band Dio later on. They worked together for decades and he had the chance to know him quite well. In an interview with Metal Swap Meet (Transcribed by Blabbermouth), the musician recalled the love that Dio had for his fans. Vinny Appice recalls the love Ronnie James Dio had for his fans "It was amazing. He'd be sitting there in the rehearsal room, writing lyrics. We'd be jamming on something, both with Sabbath and Dio, and then he'd go up to the mic and sing a couple of lines. I'd go, 'Holy shit. This sounds like the record's finished.' It was so spot-on and strong, I was, like, 'Oh, man.' And then I watched him the way he worked with the fans. One of the first things I remember, we pulled out of an arena with Sabbath. We had two limos, Ronnie and I in one, and Tony and Geezer would leave early." "We would stay and hang out. We pull up, go out of the arena, go up the hill and go to the gates and let us out and there's a whole bunch of fans there. And it's freezing cold out. It's January in upstate New York. Ronnie says, 'Stop,' gets out of the limo, walks over to the fans, starts signing stuff for them. (I thought) 'Wow, that's cool.' So I did the same thing. I wasn't that known back then, but now that's somebody who cares." Appice continued: "He cares about his fans. He remembers your name. And it's just amazing. The next year or tour, you'd go see Ronnie, he'd go, Hey, Brian. How are you doing, man?' He remembers your name. And I'd be going, 'Hey, Bob, it's really good to see you.' He remembered everybody's name. It was incredible. He loved his fans. He loved the music," Vinny Appice said. With Black Sabbath, Appice recorded the studio albums "Mob Rules" (1981) and "Dehumanizer" (1992). As part of Dio he recorded: "Holy Diver" (1983), "The Last In Line" (1984), "Sacred Heart" (1985), "Dream Evil"(1987), "Strange Highways" (1993) and "Angry Machines" (1996). He was also the drummer in the Black Sabbath spin-off band Heaven and Hell, which released the album "The Devil You Know" in 2009. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTxSNosJrDo&pp=ygUJbW9iIHJ1bGVzThe post Vinny Appice recalls the love Ronnie James Dio had for his fans appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.

Geezer Butler recalls how he overcame depression

The legendary Black Sabbath bassist and lyricist Geezer Butler dealt with depression for decades until he finally managed to get better. As the musician, who is currently promoting his biography "Into The Void", said in an interview with TalkShopLive (Transcribed by Blabbermouth), it was just in the 90s that he finally found a doctor who could help him. The musician recalled that back in the 60s and 70s people were afraid to go to the doctor and talk about mental health because they were afraid someone could put them in a mental institution. So he had to deal with depression for decades until he was finally medicated properly. Geezer Butler recalls how he overcame depression "Unless you've experienced true depression, you can't describe it. It's like you're going to this awful black hole. People would say, like, 'Oh, just go and have a drink or take the dog for a walk.' That's what the doctors used to say. 'Well, go and watch television or read a book.' And, of course, you've got no interest in anything. So the only way I could express myself was writing the lyrics for 'Paranoid'." "I mean, I wasn't depressed all the time, but when I used to get the bouts of depression, you just couldn't explain it to anyone, and you were terrified that you go to a mental health person, maybe, and they put you in hospital for years, in a mental institution." "So you'd never go to doctors or anything like that. And so you just had to get on with it. And the only way I could get it out of my system was to write the lyrics." "(I'm doing) good now, yeah. 'Cause in 1999, I was finally properly diagnosed, and they put me on Prozac for six weeks. And the doctor says, 'It's not gonna work straight away. Keep taking it for six weeks and eventually you'll start feeling like normal again.' And I said, 'Well, what's normal?' After six weeks, this big cloud seemed to lift off me. It was great," Geezer Butler said. Butler helped to form Black Sabbath back in 1968 and was part of the band until 1984, returning in 1987, 1990 to 1994, 1997 to 2006 and 2011 to 2017. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qanF-91aJoThe post Geezer Butler recalls how he overcame depression appeared first on Rock And Roll Garage.
