A U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia has upheld a criminal conviction for former Trump aide and “War Room” host Steve Bannon. Bannon was convicted in 2022 on two counts of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena from the Jan. 6 House select committee. “Steve BANNON’s conviction for defying the Jan. 6 committee has been upheld by a unanimous three-judge panel of the DC Circuit Court of Appeals. But Nichols, a Trump appointee, agreed to postpone the jail term while Bannon appealed the decision, agreeing that the complex mix of laws that govern executive privilege and testimonial immunity for White House aides could be overturned by higher courts. But a three-judge panel of the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Bannon’s argument, saying the former aide and prominent podcaster had no legal rationale for his blanket refusal to appeal before the Jan. 6 committee — and that long-standing case law. “Because we have no basis to depart from that binding precedent, and because none of Bannon’s other challenges to his convictions have merit, we affirm [the conviction],” the panel ruled in a 20-page opinion. The judges on the panel included Barack Obama appointee Cornelia Pillard, Trump appointee Justin Walker and Joe Biden appointee Bradley Garcia. Arguing before the appeals court last fall in an effort to overturn the four-month prison sentence, Bannon’s attorney asserted that his client couldn’t comply with those subpoenas because Trump had invoked executive privilege. Creedence Clearwater Revival’s fifth album, Cosmo’s Factory, was arguably the peak of the Bay Area band’s commercial run. It dented the number one spot on the charts for an amazing nine consecutive weeks. Although it boasted three hit singles, it was, as a whole, much more AOR than most CCR fans would want to believe. When you do a smokin’ 11-minute version of Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” you’re not worrying about feeding the hit parade. On that cue, CCR’s next and final album as a foursome — Pendulum — would go on to be their first commercial flop. Go figure. No doubt, John Fogerty went the distance with Cosmo’s Factory. By this time, his songwriting skills had risen from the swamp and were at their sharpest on songs like “Who’ll Stop The Rain,” a debatable political statement that still sends shivers down my spine. The album is aplenty with three minute-and-under J.C. Fogerty compositions — the frantic “Travelin’ Band,” the cosmic country-laced “Lookin’ Out My Backdoor,” the driving “Up And Around The Bend.” There are also four cover tunes that bring out the best in this tight knit combo with Fogerty’s high-charged vocals leading the way. The band glides through the blues (“Before You Accuse Me”), rockabilly (“Ooby Dooby” and “My Baby Left Me”) and R & B (“…Grapevine”) with all the grace and style of a first-class rock and roll unit — which, by 1970, they most certainly were. A stand-out is the seven-minute “Ramble Tamble,” which showcases a psychedelic side CCR hid in order to elude the Haight-Asbury scene taking place across the bay from the band’s home base. Although Fogerty has managed to sustain a career since his days with CCR, it’s a shame he has never been able to patch up his differences with bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford. At one point, record company difficulties and the death of his brother Tom strained the relationship or any chance of reconciliation. These days, there’s a business cooperative, but Fogerty, Cook and Clifford don’t engage with each other. They can always go back and listen to Cosmo’s Factory. Northwestern University administrators and faculty members recently signed a resolution calling Israel a “terror” state and demanding the school boycott the country. The resolution, obtained by The Washington Free Beacon, comes just a week after the university caved to anti-Israel protesters, including funding for full-ride scholarships and two faculty positions for Palestinians. “After months of tightening what has — for the last 76 years — been a brutal and insufferable occupation, Israel is leading a multifront war on the people of Palestine that can only be described as ethnic cleansing and genocide,” the resolution says. “Despite the immense loss of life and all that sustains it, US diplomatic, military, and top academic institutions have chosen to stand firmly on the side of terror,” the statement added. “Northwestern is no exception.” The resolution also blasted Northwestern for creating an Advisory Committee on Preventing Antisemitism and a Committee on Free Expression aimed at addressing anti-Semitism on campus, the Free Beacon reported. “Between establishing bodies to police our tone, arresting students for exercising their rights, and openly calling for the silencing of pro-Palestinian voices, it is clear that our institution’s singular response has been one of censorship of any and all voices deemed uncomfortable or challenging to the status quo,” the resolution said. One of the signatories was Liv Harmening, the outreach and education coordinator for Northwestern’s Office of Civil Rights and Title IX Compliance, leading to questions as to whether a Jewish student could receive fair treatment in a campus disciplinary proceeding. A spokesman for the university told the outlet that Northwestern “has no tolerance for discrimination or harassment. We are reviewing the document. In a document released at the time, the university promised to “provide immediate temporary space for [Middle East and North Africa] MENA/Muslim students.” Following that, Northwestern said it plans to provide and renovate a house for these students “as soon as practicably possible” after it finishes its current renovation project, slated for completion in 2026. And while the university did not say it would divest from Israeli companies, it did say it would re-establish its Advisory Committee on Investment Responsibility, allowing students, faculty, and staff a say in how the school invests its endowment, opening a door for those who want to divest from Israel. Two lawsuits were filed against Northwestern following the agreement, one alleging that the scholarships and faculty positions violated federal civil rights law, and the other filed by three students alleging the university enabled the harassment of Jewish students.
