New York Times Roots for Pro-Hamas Competition: 'Al Jazeera Finds Fans On Campus'

The radical leftists on campus don't trust newspaper like The New York Times for their coverage of the Israel-Hamas war, but the Times doesn't mind. On the front of Monday's business section, they offered a laudatory look at the pro-Hamas, Qatar-funded network Al Jazeera, under “Why Al Jazeera is the Go To News Source for Student Protesters.” Santul Nerkar, a young journalist at the paper, never used terms like "leftist" or "radical" or even "progressive." They're just "pro-Palestinian." The print headline: “Al Jazeera Finds Fans On Campus.” He began: Nick Wilson has closely followed news on the war in Gaza since October. But Mr. Wilson, a Cornell student, is picky when it comes to his media diet: As a pro-Palestinian activist, he doesn’t trust major American outlets’ reporting on Israel’s campaign in Gaza. When conservatives say they don’t trust the mainstream press to cover Republicans fairly, they’re often smeared as ignorant or racist or McCarthyite. (The Times certainly doesn't respect the right-leaning New York Post.) Yet when leftists readers spout distrust, journalists from those same outlets under attack sound supportive. Strange how that works. Instead, he turns to publications less familiar to some American audiences, like the Arab news network Al Jazeera. “Al Jazeera is the site that I go to to get an account of events that I think will be reliable,” he said. Nerkar listed a few freak-show outlets, including Jewish Currents, which spouts about “Israel war crimes and “genocide,” as reliable reportorial options. Many student protesters said in recent interviews that they were seeking on-the-ground coverage of the war in Gaza, and often, a staunchly pro-Palestinian perspective -- and they are turning to alternative media for it. There’s a range of options: Jewish Currents, The Intercept, Mondoweiss and even independent Palestinian journalists on social media, as they seek information about what is happening in Gaza. .... Israel’s recent ban on the local operations of Al Jazeera has only elevated the network’s status among many student protesters. They prize coverage from reporters on the ground, and Al Jazeera has a more extensive operation in Gaza than any other publication. Students also noted the sacrifices it has made to tell the story there. Two Al Jazeera journalists have died since the start of the war. What didn’t make it into this report: Al-Jazeera’s pro-terrorist coverage like throwing a “birthday party” with cake and fireworks in 2008, to celebrate the release of a Lebanese terrorist who killed four in Israel, including a four-year-old girl. Al Jazeera reporters Ismail Abu Omar and Mohamed Washah were caught moonlighting as Hamas commanders. In February, The Times of Israel reported that "the IDF revealed a trove of images" that showed Washah in a Hamas uniform training fighters how to shoot rocket-propelled grenades, build warheads, and operate drones armed with an RPG. Nerkar oddly described Hamas as "armed resistance," not as engaged in the slaughter of civilians and hostage-taking. Critics say its coverage veers into support of the armed resistance to Israel. The Israeli government, which has accused Al Jazeera of acting as a “mouthpiece” for Hamas, last Sunday seized its broadcast equipment and shut down its operations in the country for at least 45 days. This is apparently Al Jazeera’s idea of balance: Terrorist videos as well as Israeli government news conferences. Al Jazeera called the government’s accusation “baseless” in a statement, adding that it has broadcast every news conference held by the Israeli cabinet and representatives for the Israel Defense Forces, in addition to videos from Hamas. …. The protesters rattle off a list of mainstream American publications as having coverage they find objectionable, including CNN, The Atlantic, the BBC and The New York Times, among many others. Nerkar approached the truth when he quoted scholar Hussein Ibish that the show’s “distinctly anti-American bent” had found a new fanbase on American college campuses: “There’s a third-worldist, anti-imperial point of view, and that’s also the view that many college kids have adopted.” Can’t disagree with that.

Parishioners pin down gunman who busted into church where scores of kids were receiving First Communion

Scores of children gathered at a Louisiana church over the weekend to receive their First Communion. Unbeknownst to the innocents and their parents, a hooded teen dressed all in black was on his way in, armed with a rifle. A handful of parishioners were, however, able to deliver the children inside from the apparent evil without. The Abbeville Police Department indicated it received a call of a suspicious person with a gun at St. Mary Magdalen Church around 10:35 a.m. on Saturday. The 16-year-old suspect attempted to steal into the Catholic church through the rear entrance. Police and the church confirmed that upon opening the door, the suspect was "immediately confronted by parishioners, escorted outside, and the police were called." When police arrived on the scene less than a minute later, they found the suspect disarmed and pinned to the ground by multiple parishioners, reported the Arcadiana Advocate. After the suspect told them there was a second shooter near the building, APD officers and deputies from the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office swept the area for additional threats and evacuated the church. Footage excerpted from a livestream of the Mass shows an individual approach the sanctuary and inform the priest, Rev. Nicholas DuPré, of the situation. Keeping his cool, Fr. DuPré instructs his parish, "I'd like everybody to be seated for just a moment," then a moment later invites everybody to join him in praying the Hail Mary. While many can be heard joining in prayer, some parishioners leap to their feet with worry while others screamed. Parents can be seen ferrying their children away to safety while a law enforcement officer in a bulletproof vest paces near the altar. An official announces over the PA system amidst the frenzy, "So guys, just get a hold of your child. Go slowly. We did apprehend a young man. He is in custody. He is in the policy custody. Calm down and just get next to your child." USA\n\nAn anti Catholic terrorist was arrested after entering a Catholic Church with a rifle, intending to massacre children and families during a First Holy Communion ceremony in Abbeville, Louisiana — (@) The church acknowledged that the evacuation "understandably caused panic." "While we realize this was a frightening experience for those in attendance, we are incredibly grateful to both parishioners and police officers for acting quickly to ensure the safety of all," the church said in a statement. "We invite First Communicants to receive First Holy Communion at whichever Mass they choose to attend this weekend. We are grateful for all the prayers for our St. Mary Magdalen community." The church further indicated that uniformed police officers will be present at all upcoming Masses. The APD indicated that the suspect was taken to Abbeville General Hospital's behavioral unit for a medical evaluation. He was subsequently charged with terrorizing and two counts of possession of a firearm by a juvenile. Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel of the Diocese of Lafayette commended those responsible for preventing a possible massacre. "We are thankful to God that a tragedy was avoided at the First Communion mass for the children of St. Mary Magdalen in Abbeville," the bishop said in a statement. "The quick response of the Abbeville PD and alert parishioners is a great example of caring for the most vulnerable in our community. Let us pray for an end to all threats of violence to innocent human life." The incident took place one week after a gunman took aim at pastor in a Pennsylvania church; one month after an Islamic terrorist savagely stabbed an Assyrian bishop in an Australian church; and several months after a deranged anti-Semite from El Salvador shot up Joel Osteen's Houston-area megachurch. American churches have been a popular target for radicals of various stripes in recent years. A recent report from the Family Research Council indicated there had been at least 915 acts of hostility against American churches between 2018 and 2023. The attacks ranged from vandalism and arson to bomb threats. St. Mary Magdalen Church shared a prayer to Facebook the day after the incident: "Holy Spirit, comforter of hearts, heal your people's wounds and transform brokenness into wholeness. Grant us courage and wisdom, humility and grace, to act with justice. Breathe wisdom into our prayers. Grant that all harmed by the threat of violence may find peace in justice. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen." Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!

Hawaiian Poke Cake

Hawaiian Poke Cake

This moist Hawaiian Poke Cake is the perfect summertime dessert! Pineapple and coconut flavors combine to make the ultimate (and easy) cake! A TROPICAL FRUIT POKE CAKE It’s no secret that I love a good poke cake! I’ve made tons and tons of tasty poke cakes over the years because I love them so much! This Hawaiian Poke Cake really tastes like summer! If you’ve never made a poke cake, now is the time. They are simple to make but pack so much flavor. My family raved over this one and I took some to the neighbors and everyone asked for the recipe! I promise that this one will quickly become a family favorite! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What size cake mix do I use? Over the last few years, manufacturers have changed the size of cake mixes. A few years ago, cake mixes were 18.25 ounces, then they went down to 15.25, and now, some brands are down to 13.25 ounces. Duncan Hines is still my go-to and at the time that I’m writing this, they’re still 15.25 ounces. Great Value (the Wal-Mart brand is also still 15.25 ounces) However, this can change without notice. This recipe has been tested with a 13.25 ounce cake mix as well and it worked just fine, with NO changes needed. This poke cake recipe will work with any of the cake mix sizes. Can I used pineapple tidbits be used instead? Yes, instead of using crushed pineapple, tidbits can be used. Obviously this will give it a different texture though. Why is using room temperature eggs helpful? It’s good to use room temperature eggs for this cake, and any other baked goods because they mix in better to the batter. But, don’t stress out, if you forget to take them out, this recipe will still work.  How to store leftover Hawaiian Cake? Any leftover cake should be tightly wrapped with plastic wrap or foil and should be kept in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. I wouldn’t freeze this cake because the topping consistency would change and the cake consistency would change. Plus, the flavor start to change then too. INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE) Duncan Hines French vanilla cake mix– you can use other brands, I just prefer Duncan Hines. Any yellow cake mix or white cake mix will also work well. You can even use a banana or coconut flavored cake mix. large eggs whole milk– I really recommend whole milk but you could use 2% milk. Do not use skim milk. unsalted butter– You can use salted butter too if that is all you have. There is only a 1/4 teaspoon of salt in a whole stick of butter so the amount is negligible. sour cream– if you don’t have this on hand, you can just omit it. You don’t have to worry about adding something in its place. This is just going to add additional moistness (you don’t taste it in the batter). banana cream instant pudding– This pudding mix can be swapped out for vanilla instant pudding mix. Other options to try are French vanilla or white chocolate cheesecake instant pudding mix or coconut instant pudding mix. crushed pineapple – don’t drain it right away because we will need some of the juices. whipped topping– Any brand will work, or you can make your own homemade whipped cream. fresh pineapple and toasted coconut – these are optional garnishes but I think the coconut really rounds out the tropical flavors. HOW TO MAKE A HAWAIIAN POKE CAKE Preheat the oven to 350F degrees. Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. In a large bowl with an electric hand mixer (or the bowl of a stand mixer) add the cake mix, eggs, milk, butter and sour cream. Mix for 2 minutes until combined well. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish.  Bake the cake for 25-30 minutes or until the cake springs back under your finger and/or  a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool for about 5 minutes. Make large holes in rows across the cake. A round wooden spoon handle works well for this. You want them large enough so the pudding can go into them.  In a bowl whisk together the instant pudding, milk and one cup of the crushed pineapple with juice until combined and slightly thickened. Pour the prepared pudding into the holes. Lightly pressing down with a spatula to ensure they are fully filled.  Evenly spread the remaining pudding mixture across the top of the cake. Drain the remaining crushed pineapple and spread it on top of the pudding layer. Finally, evenly spread the whipped topping on top.  Cover loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 3-4 hours or overnight. Poke cakes are better when they’ve had time to sit. Serve slices garnished with fresh pineapple or toasted coconut, optional.  CRAVING MORE RECIPES?  Butterfinger Poke Cake Coconut Poke Cake Boston Cream Poke Cake Twinkie Poke Cake Carrot Poke Cake Banana Pudding Poke Cake Lime Jell-O Poke Cake Chocolate Poke Cake 35 Poke Cake Recipes Print Hawaiian Poke Cake A sweet and fruity flavored pudding poke cake featuring pineapple and coconut flakes with a whipped topping. First Shark Attack Victim In Hit ’70s Film ‘Jaws’ Susan Backlinie Dies At 77

The first shark attack victim in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 thriller movie Jaws was played by Susan Backlinie, who recently died of a heart attack in her California home. The 77-year-old had a lifelong career as an excellent swimmer and actress, which she began pursuing at 10 years old. Susan grew up swimming miles off the coast of West Palm Beach in Florida and was a freestyle champion during high school. She scored her most famous role as Chrissie Watkins after sending in her nude photo to Jaws’ production executive, which piqued Steven’s interest. Remembering Susan Backlinie JAWS, Susan Backlinie, 1975 Jaws opens with “Chrissie” swimming in shark-infested waters, after which she is dragged to her death by the killer animal. Her piercing screams were a memorable moment from the scene, with speculations later arising that she got injured in real life by the back harness that jerked her about. RELATED: Spielberg Says One Of The Worst Parts Of ‘Jaws’ Was A ‘Blessing In Disguise’ Unlike the rumors about Susan truly screaming in pain, she was startled by the unexpected pull underwater, which none of the crew warned her about. Her co-star Richard Dreyfuss admitted being terrified by her performance and revealed in the Jaws: The Inside Story documentary that Steven later recorded her shrieks by pouring water in her mouth. JAWS, Susan Backlinie, 1975 Susan also reprised her role as a parody in Steven’s 1941, where she got swallowed by a Japanese submarine’s periscope rather than a shark. She also appeared in movies like Jim Henson’s The Great Muppet Caper, The Grizzly & the Treasure, A Stranger in My Forest, Day of the Animals, and series including The Quest, Quark, and The Fall Guy. JAWS, Susan Backlinie, 1975 Susan was also a stunt woman for The Villain and Donald W. Thompson’s Image of the Beast. After retiring from the spotlight, the former animal trainer worked as a computer accountant in Ventura, California. Susan is survived by her husband Harvey Swindall, who called her “the most amazing person” in his recently released heartfelt tribute.
