The Israeli Tragedy and Douglas Murray’s Churchillian Voice

The Israeli Tragedy and Douglas Murray’s Churchillian Voice

I let thoughts percolate and events develop before writing each week. This week, there were so many ideas coming forward that it was at first difficult to choose. But three things came together to point me in the direction that these words follow today. For murder has come to our shores, sponsored by a treacherous academic culture of hatred and of politicians building careers on that hatred. The first event was purchasing a new book. I had just heard Douglas Murray and Jordan Peterson talk for close to two hours about Murray’s new book, On Democracies and Death Cults, which I rushed to order. Murray is a Churchillian voice calling us to the defense of a civilization that is under deadly assault. We need Churchillian voices to rouse us from our opioid slumber. For Hitler and his gang were not cemented into place as the apotheosis of tyrannical evil. In his day, many in the West thought him onto something and that those who immediately opposed Nazism, such as Fiorello LaGuardia, and slightly later, Churchill, political opportunists engaged in dangerous warmongering. Even as the extent of Hitler’s aggressive malignancy became more apparent, Britain and France were loath to resist. Lord Halifax, whose political clout in Britain briefly rivaled Churchill’s, was looking to make a craven peace with Hitler even after Churchill had taken the reins in 1940. It was a very close thing. Around the world, many influential people pooh-poohed the danger he and his movement posed. So it was in America as well. Henry Ford sent the Nazis money when they were just getting started, and he accepted a gaudy medal from the German ambassador in July 1938, when Jews had already been evicted from professions, schools, and political rights, Dachau had been up and running for five years, the Rhineland had been reoccupied in violation of treaty, Hitler ended Austria’s independence, and Czechoslovakia was being threatened and was to be entirely swallowed up itself within a year. Even after Hitler had invaded Poland to start World War II, Charles Lindbergh, America’s darling after his pioneering trans-Atlantic solo flight, told Americans, “These wars in Europe are not wars in which our civilization is defending itself against some Asiatic intruder. There is no Genghis Khan nor Xerxes marching against our Western nations.” It is even more fashionable in today’s Europe and in woke America to embrace the cause of Hitler’s heirs in the Middle East. As pusillanimous as Chamberlain, and as casually disdainful of Jews, Britain, France, et al., have never missed a chance to oppose Israel’s efforts to end forever the existential threat everyone knows Hamas, Hezbollah, et al., pose to the Jewish state — and, as with Hitler, to Jews everywhere. Event number 2: the governments of Britain, France, and Canada, unwilling to adequately defend their own Jewish citizens from harassment and violence, publicly condemn Israel for attempting to defeat the people who seek their extermination. Anyone who reads Murray will see how precisely he has delineated the problem. It is the test of our civilization and its values. Referring to the orgy of massacre, abduction, and rape that Hamas unleashed on Israel’s civilians in October of 2023, Murray wrote: From the moment news of the massacre in Israel emerged, one thing in particular is worth noting: There was not a single major protest against Hamas in any Western city. Not one. The people who carried out the massacre and started a war did not find themselves the object of criticism on the streets of one Western city … The governments of all these countries had been funding the Palestinians in Gaza for years. They had been giving billions of dollars in foreign aid direct to the Hamas government there, through UN organizations among many others. This money had been used by Hamas’ leaders to either enrich themselves (the group’s leaders became billionaires) or to build the infrastructure of terror inside Gaza that enabled the group to carry out the October 7 attack, steal Israelis, and hold them hostage inside Gaza. Those governments funded a government, who, like the Nazis, made their violent intentions public, and who had verified those intentions by terrorizing its political opponents and by unleashing endless warfare against Israel.  Hamas publicly commits to continue until Israel is eliminated and Jews everywhere terrorized. As in the ’30s, Western democracies have chosen to ignore the challenge to the values that made them great. It is worse than the 30s in that the enemies of freedom, who wish for members of only one religion to be tolerated in the entire Middle East, wield large political clout in all these countries. Their love of coercion manifests not only in the Judenrein realms they control in the Middle East, but also in the violence and harassment that are a normal part of life now for Jews in London, Paris, and Montreal. And it’s a close thing here, too. For murder has come to our shores, sponsored by a treacherous academic culture of hatred and of politicians building careers on that hatred. It’s not hard to imagine Ross Barnett, the Talmadges, and all those who got and kept power by the subjection of an entire race, smiling and applauding from their graves. Like the segregationists, like the Nazis, they construct a mental world in which they see their hatred as love of justice and that murder is a necessary means to that justice. Like the segregationists, their vision of justice is absolutely exclusionary; and like the Nazis, their just world is completely absent of those whom they hate. (No Jews at all live in any place where either Hamas or the PA govern.) Event number 3 — the murder in cold blood of a young couple just about to announce their engagement to their family.  I read about it just today on the Chabad.org website, quoted here: Two Israeli embassy employees were murdered in cold blood on Wednesday evening outside a gathering of young diplomats at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C.. The assailant shot and killed them at close range, leaving three others wounded … Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26, were standing outside the museum for the event hosted by the American Jewish Committee (AJC), when Elias Rodriguez, a 30-year-old Chicago native, opened fire. Rodriguez then entered the building and, after sitting in the museum lobby amongst his victims, identified himself as the perpetrator. As he was removed from the scene, Rodriguez began chanting “Free, free Palestine.” Rodriguez, a hero in his own eyes, who so courageously executed these young people from behind, has told that he was inspired to action by the pro-Hamas rioters on campuses. Hey, what’s the point of a revolution without rape and kidnapping? And when its defended by the supreme gaslighting perfected by this crew — they are fighting against a holocaust! Josef Goebbels, you’ve been outdone! Hamas’s defenders here and abroad will no doubt do the same. This path is already well-worn. The acolytes of hatred are already busy portraying this cold-blooded assassination as a glorious act of resistance, and they are on the web crying out for more of the same (here is a fine example). An overlapping group of people has portrayed the cold-blooded assassination of insurance executive Brian Robert Thompson as similarly heroic. This is the cult of death. Their only law is their imperious hate.  They are intoxicated with death. And that is a topic too big to even begin to tackle at the end of this article. I’m resolved to treat it further. The topic that Murray has addressed is of an importance as great as that which Churchill addressed. As Murray’s subtitle suggests, our response to the cult of death will determine the future not just of Israel but of civilization itself. Pray for swift victory for its cause. Catholic Decline and Christian Revival in Ireland

Catholic Decline and Christian Revival in Ireland

The Catholic faith has, for decades now, been waning in what was once a devout stronghold of the faith, but a new survey is suggesting that Ireland may soon experience a sort of Christian revival, although it may not be a Catholic one. The Dublin-based Iona Institute for Religion and Society just published a study tracing “changes in religious attitudes and practices in recent decades” across Ireland. The Catholic population in Ireland is aging, and rapidly. What 18-year-old wants to go to Mass surrounded by 70-year-olds? Most statistics in the report are unsurprising. For example, only 16 percent of survey respondents said that they regularly attend Mass, while 62 percent identified as Catholic but said that they do not attend Mass, or at least only attend rarely. Twenty-two percent said that they are not Catholic. The largest share of regular Mass-goers (31 percent) was among those aged 65 or older, while the largest share  of those who self-identify as Catholics but do not attend Mass (what the Iona Institute calls “cultural Catholics”) was to be found among those aged 45 to 54 (71 percent) and 55 to 64 (72 percent). Burgeoning secularism, poor catechesis, rampant non-Christian immigration, and a host of other issues have been driving the Irish out of the Catholic Church, but the wounds dealt by the clerical sex abuse scandal have been deep. Overall, 40 percent of respondents said that they hold a negative view of the Catholic Church, compared to only percent with a positive view. Of those with an unfavorable view of the Church, 42 percent cited the clerical sex abuse scandal as the basis for their unfavorable view, while other cited “old-fashioned” positions on issues like abortion and the LGBTQ agenda or the influence the Church has historically exerted in Ireland. Most Irish additionally misjudge the scale of clerical sex abuse, overestimating the number of abusers by four to one. While nearly half (45 percent) of Irish agree that the Catholic Church’s teachings have been beneficial for society, nearly a third (32 percent) disagree, and one-quarter of Irish polled said that they “would be happy if the Catholic Church disappeared from Ireland completely.” Animosity towards the Church — and Christianity more broadly — seems to be highest among those aged 25 to 34. Only 5 percent of that age cohort identifies as religious, only 23 percent (the lowest rate reported in the survey) attend religious services, and the cohort holds the least positive (5 percent very positive, 24 percent mostly positive) and most negative (15 percent very negative, 23 percent mostly negative) views of Christianity. That cohort also holds the most negative (51 percent overall) view of the Catholic Church, but holds a slightly more positive view (24 percent) of the Church than those aged 18 to 24 (19 percent). Ireland’s Sliver of Hope Those aged 18 to 24 aren’t far behind those aged 25 to 34 in their animosity towards the Catholic Church, but they are far more open to Christianity more generally. Only 6 percent of those 18 to 24 identified as regular Mass-goers (the lowest share out of any cohort) but 41 percent (the highest share out of any cohort) said that they are not Catholic. Overall, 54 percent of those 18 to 24 identified as spiritual or religious, and they were more likely than most other cohorts to pray (42 percent), attend religious services (32 percent), read religious books (22 percent), or seek out religious content on YouTube (21 percent) or social media (23 percent). There are, again, a number of factors contributing to the decline of Catholicism in Ireland. While that cynical cohort aged 25 to 34 seems to have completely abandoned Christianity, the younger folk have only abandoned the Catholic Church. And why wouldn’t they? The Catholic population in Ireland is aging, and rapidly. What 18-year-old wants to go to Mass surrounded by 70-year-olds? From my own time living in Ireland, I can report that Sunday Masses in Ireland are often a painful experience for faithful Catholics. The concept of Christ as God is a forgotten one: instead, He is hailed as your buddy, if He’s even acknowledged at all. The Iona Institute said that it’s study found “an obvious hunger for spiritual insights and practices” in Ireland, especially among the younger generations. But Ireland’s Catholic leaders offer nothing to satisfy that hunger, only trite platitudes, politically correct political commentary, jokes that weren’t even funny when they were first told 75 years ago, and a dash of heterodox ideology. If Ireland’s Catholic leaders can’t even pretend to offer young people Christ, then the youth will seek out a church that will. READ MORE from S.A. The Three Year College Degree

The Three Year College Degree

The time has come to save a full year of unnecessary undergraduate education by eliminating what Michael Poliakoff, President of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, has called “fluff” courses that pad out the standard four-year bachelor’s degree. These include many general education and elective courses, while retaining the core courses in a student’s major field. Only if the business community gets on board and becomes vocal about their acceptance of a three-year college B.A. … will there be momentum in favor of the new model. The advantages of a three-year degree are primarily economic. Besides saving one year’s tuition and fees, there are opportunity costs for staying out of the workforce during a student’s fourth year in college.  The College Board reports that average tuition and fees for the 2024-25 academic year are $11,610 for in-state public college students and $43,350 for private, non-profit institutions. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, average salaries for 2025 college graduates are projected to be $68,680. Thus, the total opportunity cost (one year salary plus tuition) for public college graduates is $80,290, and for private college graduates it is $112,030. Beyond the economic benefits, there are social ones. Ironically, while the four-year bachelor’s degree in America became nearly universal in the early 20th century on the premise that two years of general education were fundamental to citizenship, the current century is a time when half of general education is typically devoted to narrow, Woke-inspired courses such as Parenting for Social Justice (a social science general education course at my undergraduate alma mater, California State University Northridge). Many of these courses are put up by faculty in DEI-related programs, rent-seekers who wish to retain job security by having students steered toward courses in their departments. Robert Zemsky, a University of Pennsylvania professor, a strong advocate for the three-year bachelor’s degree, has noted that the four-year curriculum expresses the preferences of faculty, a group that Kenneth Marsh, President of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, has noted have a “visceral disdain for the idea” of a three-year degree.  Opposed to the forces of the status quo are many students and parents, consumers of higher education, who have what Zemsky calls a “righteous anger” about college costs and time. In 2023, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities approved several new three-year bachelor’s degree programs at Brigham Young University — Idaho and Ensign College, institutions owned by the Latter Day Saints (Mormon) church.  The Northwest Commission is a primary regional accreditor, and its president, Sonny Ramaswamy, notes that “the public is calling for innovation.” Indiana is on track to become the first state to introduce three-year degrees at all its public colleges and universities. State Senator Jean Leising introduced a bill that became law, requiring a review of four-year degree programs. This will lead to each state institution inaugurating at least one three-year program by July 2025.  Another step forward is being taken by the Colleges-in-3 Exchange, a group of a dozen public and private higher education institutions committed to designing academically sound three-year bachelor’s degrees. Further opportunities to save time and money in earning college credits come in many forms.  High school students have long earned credit through Advanced Placement exams.  In many states and localities, agreements between community colleges and high schools can enable high school students to earn dual high school and college credit by taking specific courses, such as English composition, either at their high school or local community college. The College Board offers course credit through its long-established CLEP (“College Level Exam Program”).  The American Council on Education recommends numerous programs for college credit, including some corporate and military training and StaighterLine courses. StraighterLine is a private company that offers various college courses online with extremely low costs. Some 2,000 higher education institutions accept StraighterLine courses. Many high school graduates can start college with at least a semester’s worth of general education credits by taking advantage of the above-mentioned opportunities.  If they plan, they could start college in the summer after high school, thus reducing total time in college to two years to earn the three-year degree.  Such students will then pick up an added benefit of $68,680 on top of the opportunity cost savings noted earlier. Three Years and Out Richard K. Vedder, one of the nation’s foremost experts on higher education, has noted in his recent book Let Colleges Fail: The Power of Creative Destruction in Higher Education that colleges and universities need to introduce the types of competitive forces that propel what economist Joseph Schumpeter called “the process of industrial mutation that incessantly revolutionizes the economic structure from within, incessantly destroying the old one, incessantly creating a new one.”  Vedder advocates many reforms to reshape the higher education system for the current century.  The three-year degree as a new standard aligns with Vedder’s views. Notwithstanding the logic of the three-year degree requirement, the higher education establishment is likely to capitalize on the public’s general lack of understanding about college curriculum and program development. Only if the business community gets on board and becomes vocal about their acceptance of a three-year B.A. or B.S. as equivalent to the current four-year degree will there be momentum in favor of the new model. Political champions also need to emerge to pass state laws such as the one in Indiana and draw the public’s attention to the benefits of a three-year degree. Without some “buzz” about unnecessary cost and time inflation in higher education, the nascent movement cited in this article may fade away, causing the American public to miss another opportunity for progress.
