Polaris, Earth’s North Star, Has A Surprisingly Spotted Surface

Humanity’s been fortunate to have a star situated over Earth’s north pole. The star, known as Polaris, or the North Star, has guided many sailors safely to port. But Polaris is a fascinating star in its own right, not just because of its serendipitous position. Polaris is also called the Pole Star, and it’s actually a triple star system. The primary star is a yellow supergiant named Polaris Aa, about 448 light-years away, and it orbits with a smaller companion named Polaris Ab. The outer star is named Polaris B and may also have a dim companion. In this article, Polaris refers to the primary star, Polaris Aa. These Hubble images show the locations of the Polaris stars. Polaris Aa is labelled Polaris A in this image, and Polaris AB is labelled Polaris B. Image Credit: By NASA/HST – (Image: STScI-2006-02), Public Domain. Polaris hasn’t always been the North Star, and it won’t always be. Thuban was the North Star from the 4th to 2nd millennium BC until Earth’s axial precession gave that position to Polaris. The Pole Star changes during a 26,000-year cycle, so Thuban will take over from Polaris in the year 20346. But whether Polaris is the Pole Star at a particular time or not, it’s an interesting object whose properties can help us understand the expansion of the Universe. Polaris is a variable star that pulses and changes brightness over time. Specifically, it’s a Cepheid variable. Cepheid variables expand and contract rhythmically, and their brightness changes in a predictable pattern. Because there’s a direct relationship between their pulsation period and their luminosity, they’re useful in measuring distances. They’re called “standard candles” and are part of the cosmic distance ladder. Astronomers use standard candles to help measure the Hubble constant, or how rapidly the Universe is expanding. But there’s some tension between our measurements of the Hubble constant. When we use local objects like Cepheid variables to measure the Hubble constant, we get a different number than when we use larger-scale things like the Cosmic Microwave Background to measure it. Since Polaris is such a nearby standard candle, a team of astronomers used a telescope array to watch the star for 30 years. By more accurately observing Polaris and its smaller companion Polaris Ab, they hoped to constrain Polaris’ mass and other characteristics more accurately. This, in turn, could help us understand the tension in the Hubble constant. Along the way, the researchers uncovered some surprises surrounding this long-observed star. Their results are in a paper titled “The Orbit and Dynamical Mass of Polaris: Observations with the CHARA Array.” It’s published in The Astrophysical Journal, and the lead author is Nancy Evans. Evans is an astrophysicist at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian. In order to understand Polaris better, it’s critical to get a good look at its dim companion. But that’s not easy to do. “The small separation and large contrast in brightness between the two stars makes it extremely challenging to resolve the binary system during their closest approach,” Evans said. The CHARA (Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy) Array was built to bring clarity to objects like Polaris and its dim companion. It’s an interferometer, an array of six separate telescopes, each with a one-meter-diameter primary mirror. By combining the images from each separate scope, CHARA attains the higher resolution of a telescope with a primary mirror that’s 330 meters in diameter, the area covered by the individual ‘scopes. CHARA has a special camera designed to work with it called MIRC-X (Michigan InfraRed Combiner-eXeter). With these tools, the astronomers tracked Polaris and its dim companion over a 30-year period. They measured how the Cepheid variable changed size as it pulsated. They learned that it’s five times as massive as the Sun and has a diameter 46 times larger than the Sun. However, the mass measurement is affected by the star’s large orbital eccentricity, 0.63, so there’s still some uncertainty about Polaris’ mass. The measured mass and luminosity also show that Polaris is more luminous than it should be for a star on its evolutionary track. “Polaris is at least 0.4 mag brighter than the predicted tracks,” the authors write in their paper. This is important because of the “Cepheid mass problem.” It’s a discrepancy between masses inferred from stellar evolutionary tracks and masses from pulsation calculations. A Cepheid variable’s mass can be determined when it’s in a binary relationship. “Mass determination starts with a radial velocity (RV) orbit and pulsation curve for a binary containing a Cepheid,” the authors explain. Very few Cepheid variables are in binary relationships like Polaris, so it’s an important target for constraining and understanding their masses. These measurements are all important because they relate back to the cosmic distance ladder, standard candles, and the Hubble constant. “The accuracy of inputs from any of these measurements depends on many characteristics of the star: brightness, orbital period, inclination, and the separation, distance, and mass ratio of the components. This means that each Cepheid system is unique and has to be analyzed independently,” the authors explain. The observations also showed variable spots on the star’s surface. “The CHARA images revealed large bright and dark spots on the surface of Polaris that changed over time,” said Gail Schaefer, director of the CHARA Array. This CHARA Array false-colour image of Polaris from April 2021 reveals large bright and dark spots on the surface. Image Credit: Evans et al. 2024. “The identification of starspots is consistent with several properties of Polaris,” the researchers write. It’s different from other Cepheid variables because it has a very low pulsation amplitude. That could mean that its atmosphere is more like a nonvariable supergiant. Those atmospheres often seem to be active, much like the spots on Polaris. “It is not clear how full amplitude pulsation affects the atmosphere and magnetic field in pulsators, so Polaris is an interesting test case,” they explain. The spots are variable, which could explain why astronomers have struggled to identify other “additional periodicities” in the star. They could also explain an observed ~120-day radial velocity variation as a rotation period. The spots on Polaris’ surface have added to the star’s complexity, and they’re begging to be understood. “We plan to continue imaging Polaris in the future,” said study co-author John Monnier, an astronomy professor at the University of Michigan. “We hope to better understand the mechanism that generates the spots on the surface of Polaris.” The post Polaris, Earth’s North Star, Has A Surprisingly Spotted Surface appeared first on Universe Today.

Another Brick in the Walz

Politics Another Brick in the Walz Teacher, leave those kids alone. Credit: image via Shutterstock Isn’t it curious how some people volunteer their personality’s skeleton key? They tell you, This is the most important thing about me, and, by thunder, they are right. But these kernels of soul-truth don’t necessarily mean what the naïfs think they do. Tim Walz wants you to know he’s just a regular guy. He’s from a little town in Nebraska, he hunts, he was in the armed services. Most of all, he wants you to know he was a public school teacher. The Mankato Scarlets marching band delivered a musical interlude shortly before the Minnesotan governor and vice-presidential nominee took the stage Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention. “Never underestimate a public school teacher!” he crowed as he recounted his first congressional race. He subjected his audience to the tedium of endless and sometimes mixed football metaphors (although, I will admit, Walz’s record as a coach is pretty impressive). This has been incorporated into the media campaign to cast Walz as an aspirationally avuncular or paternal character. (It’s gotten kind of weird.) Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA), a prototype for Walz, also enjoyed or endured this kind of fawning as Hillary Clinton’s 2016 running mate. President Joe Biden, in the happy days before he became a revenant, underwent something similar too. Kaine and Biden, however, had a serious handicap relative to their Minnesotan successor. They maintained a basic sanity or dignity that told them, at the end of the day, they were politicians, not people’s actual honest-to-God parents.  That is, they were not teachers. They could only aspire to the self-righteousness of a man who works for two-thirds of the year as a guard at a minimum-security juvie facility, and thinks that gives him the right to have his pension plan bankrupt the state. The fanaticism of the public school teacher is rivaled only by that of the unionized transit official. (Stiff competition. I once met a minor MTA bureaucrat who freely admitted to drawing about $60,000 of falsified overtime annually, and went on to explain in tones of outraged dignity that he was the aggrieved party.)  These peoples’ professional lives are in fact premised on the idea that they know how to raise other people’s children better than they can—can do a better job of feeding them, sheltering them, and occasionally, when the great white wings of the Pädogogesgeist are spread over the face of the earth, even educating them. The social upheaval of the early 2020s centered on schools for a reason. Walz has been polishing a line on the campaign trail that got trotted out Wednesday night: “We’ve got a golden rule: Mind your own damn business.” This isn’t American folk libertarianism; it’s more on the order of Keep your hands to yourself. My fellows in the conservative press have been giving the Covid “snitch line” story a good workout; then there’s the gun control and the child gender transition measures undermining parental rights. This is Mr. Walz’s classroom; he knows what’s good for you, and he’ll give it to you with tough love if need be. An awful lot of raw power can be papered over with sewing-sampler morality, variations on the dictum Just be nice and appeals to school-day simplicity. Unfortunately, the American character has a weakness for this slop. Kevin Costner is worth $250 million entirely on the merits of movies about pressing social themes like “What if Dad had said ‘I love you’ more often?” and “This rural Christian votes for Democrats.” Despite the apocalypse of the written word, the great, yawning, ever-growing void that has in a single generation all but destroyed book publishing and the print news industry (please subscribe, by the way), Hallmark still sells six and a half billion pastel cards that say things like “A Grandfather’s Prayer” and “You Are Two-Riffic!” Americans, especially Americans in the millennial generation and younger, are addicted to potato love, to the cheap mercies of mental health days and sweatpants, to the easy morality of  Ted Lasso and The Great British Bakeoff.  So perhaps the Walz gambit will work. Worse news for those of us who didn’t like school. When I was young, there was a phrase you don’t hear trotted out too much anymore: “the nanny state.” Nannying sounds like a definite improvement to the future coming into view: Mr. Walz’s national classroom, where, with great patience and a pure, simple belief in his own rightness, he asks you to stand at the board and repeat the lesson again, until you’ve got it right. Old Democrat

Politics Old Democrat Bill Clinton, a once-in-a-generation talent, appeared out of new ideas in Chicago on Wednesday. Credit: Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images “Bill Clinton could talk the owls down from the trees,” the veteran journalist Mark Halperin remarked repeatedly on his 2Way program (the cult hit of this campaign cycle) on Wednesday.  Newt Gingrich, an old antagonist, added more in quick cuts to POLITICO’s Jonathan Martin: “Had Al Gore allowed Clinton to campaign the way he could have, Al Gore would have won the presidency [in 2000]…. If I was them, and if they want to penetrate working-class voters, I can’t think of anybody they have with greater potential than Bill Clinton.” With Jimmy Carter in hospice, as President Joe Biden ghosted from the job, while the Obamas maintained an uncanny overman role in American life, and as Hillary Clinton was drowned in umbrage, the greatest prospect for a refresh of the old deck this week seemed to come from “the kid from Hope.” But it was not to be.  Bill Clinton is old.  He admitted as much. Clinton conceded in his speech he had been to every Democratic National Convention since the 1970s (the incumbent president reported the same). The two make for an interesting duo. They’ve reportedly been close during Biden’s years in power. Biden speaks more with Clinton than he does with his former boss, Barack Obama.  Clinton’s physical appearance is more youthful and his gait more impressive than Biden’s. But Clinton’s voice has been shot for years. (Rightists have alleged a causal link with his veganism.)  He sounds worse, at least compared to Biden at his most incensed.  In the 1980s and early 1990s, Clinton innovated the New Democrats. His leadership in that endeavor, his optimist’s luck, and his unrivaled sense of timing helped him leapfrog Biden and other Democrats on the scene. Clinton asserted control of not only the American center-left but returned America’s oldest party to the White House after 12 hard years in the cold. (His brothers-in-arms, as it turned out, would be Tony Blair and Gordon Brown in “New Labour,” then lowly members of Parliament across the pond.)     Though it was hardly a steady dominance—the man was impeached—he nonetheless had clear command of American esteem for two decades running.  By the mid-2000s, anti–Bill Clinton paranoia was a bad joke. The worst president in American history occupied the White House right then and there. That man’s father had been an accomplice to the grisly charade. Contrarian defenses of Jimmy Carter? Forever a mug’s game. Ronald Reagan was dead and gone.  In 2012, the Clintons’ mystique made discussion of a Hillary Clinton primary challenge to Barack Obama not completely daft. And the party old guard still discusses Bill Clinton’s convention address in Charlotte that year as if it were Mark Antony’s funeral oration.   It all lasted for, perhaps, a quarter-century—that is, until Hillary Clinton’s shock defeat in 2016. Until the disclosures of Bill Clinton’s clear links to the person and activities of Jeffrey Epstein, a murky figure that singed not just Clinton but a generation of the American power elite. Though, of course, Bill Clinton was Epstein’s prize scalp.  Now Obama (if anyone) occupies that saintly presence in the party. And Clinton had a torrid relationship with Carter, his would-be contemporary in undeclared exile from the American center stage.  “The Republicans devoted a good chunk of their convention’s prime TV time in San Diego to saluting former Presidents Ford, Reagan and Bush,” Douglas Brinkley noted in the New York Times twenty-eight years ago. “In Chicago, by contrast, the Democrats have gone out of their way to avoid even acknowledging the existence of their party’s only living former President.” Today it is the Republicans who are dinged for a lack of luminary alumni.  But Clinton is now on similar enough footing as the kindred Southerner he never quite cared for. Like Jimmy Carter, the Democratic Party of 2024 could take or leave Bill Clinton. If anything, the parade of the past this week on display in Beirut on the Lake has distracted from the promised killer app of the Kamala Harris–Tim Walz ticket: a clean break from the past. This includes the Obamas, but also very much Biden, and even more the Clintons. Most of all Bill, who once seemed to possess political chops apart from his wife. The former secretary of State gave a more commanding speech than her husband this week in a shocking role reversal. But come Christmas, she may watch another woman become president.       Donald Trump may yet win, and the scene in August this week will be remembered as haughty hallucination by those enthused. A ferocious, regimented pitch (such as that which J.D. Vance made in a post-proceedings response Wednesday) could steal the day. But if Donald Trump goes down in this election, his vanquishing will be a headliner for the ages. And anyone reasonably mortified by the prospect of ratified and enhanced Democratic power will have to do some deep thinking—to put it lightly.  But historians could eventually render a broader verdict. That is: Although inexcusably belated, and with all the attendant risks, 2024 also marked a change of the guard in American life. The post Old Democrat appeared first on The American Conservative.
