Survey Shows Support for Same-Sex Marriage Declining

Support for same-sex marriage in the U.S. has fallen for the first time in nearly a decade‚ according to a new survey. The Public Religion Research Institute published updates to its American Values Atlas on Tuesday‚ revealing that public support for same-sex marriage dropped from 69% to 67% from 2022 to 2023. The last time that institute recorded a decline in public support for same-sex marriage was almost 10 years ago‚ when it fell from 54% in 2014 to 53% in 2015. Among Republicans‚ support for same-sex marriage dropped from 49% in 2022 to 47% in 2023‚ which is still 12 points higher than it stood in 2014. There was also a similar drop in support among independent voters‚ from 73% in 2022 to 71% in 2023. Support for same-sex marriage has risen among Democrats from 65% in 2014 to 82% in 2023. The Public Religion Research Institute survey further reported that support for same-sex marriage has decreased among religious groups. Support for same-sex marriage is and has been highest among religiously unaffiliated‚ Buddhist‚ and Jewish Americans‚ with a majority of mainline Protestants and Catholics also expressing support. Among American Catholics‚ support dipped from 75% in 2022 to 73% in 2023‚ but declined most steeply among Hispanic Catholics: from 75% in 2022 to 68% in 2023. Support for same-sex marriage is lowest among Mormons (47% in 2023)‚ Hispanic Protestants (44% in 2023)‚ Muslims (40% in 2023)‚ white evangelicals (37% in 2023)‚ and Jehovah’s Witnesses (18% in 2023). Additionally‚ while a majority of Americans support LGBTQ nondiscrimination policies‚ overall support for these policies has also declined. The Public Religion Research Institute found that 80% of Americans supported nondiscrimination policies in 2022‚ but only 76% did in 2023. Support among Republicans dropped from 66% in 2022 to 59% in 2023‚ while support among Democrats remained steady. The survey also found that 52% of those who identify as LGBTQ identify as religiously unaffiliated‚ which the Public Religion Research Institute noted is “nearly twice the rate of the general U.S. population (27%).” About a third (35%) of those who identify as LGBTQ also identify as Christian‚ but the institute noted that those who reject “Christian nationalism” are “nearly unanimous (93%) in their support” for both same-sex marriage and nondiscrimination policies. “The growing partisan divide on these issues show the effect of the continuous use of LGBTQ identity and LGBTQ rights as a wedge issue in our nation’s culture wars‚” Public Religion Research Institute CEO Melissa Deckman said in a press release. In comments to The Washington Stand‚ Meg Kilgannon‚ Family Research Council senior fellow‚ said‚ “It’s interesting to me that this very sophisticated survey funded by pro-LGBT advocacy organizations managed to have a series of questions related to ‘Christian nationalist’ support for/opposition to LGBT rights or protections.” She added‚ “That’s classic framing by the Left‚ casting Christians—or simply people who don’t think men can marry other men—as the odious troublemakers. The longer we live with the effects of sexual liberation‚ the less people will like it.” The Public Religion Research Institute’s report comes in the wake of courts upholding measures such as parental notification school mandates and bans on gender-transition procedures for minors—both of which are labeled by LGBTQ activists as “oppressive”—as well as Democrats backing off LGBTQ funding programs and the release of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health files. The year which the Public Religion Research Institute’s survey centered on‚ 2023‚ also saw widespread backlash against corporations such as Bud Light and Target for their LGBTQ activism‚ resulting in billions of dollars of losses for those companies. 41-Year-Old Woman Passes Away Following ‘Medical Emergency’ On Flight From Dominican Republic

A 41-year-old woman from Indiana passed away on a flight from the Dominican Republic after experiencing a mid-flight ‘medical emergency.’ Stefanie Smith was returning from a couple’s trip in the Dominican Republic and flying into Charlotte‚ North Carolina‚ for a connecting flight. While on the flight‚ Smith suddenly became unwell. Family and friends are still trying to figure out how a 41-year-old Indiana woman died while she was on her way back from vacation.https://t.co/87K9UNW9JK — WTHR.com (@WTHRcom) March 8‚ 2024 WTHR reports: Smith and her boyfriend left Punta Cana to catch their connecting flight in Charlotte. The 41-year-old Danville woman was headed to the Indianapolis International Airport when her boyfriend realized something was wrong. “He said he looked over to her‚ her eyes were rolled into the back of her head‚” said Yannotti. “Then she began convulsing.” A flight attendant tried to help‚ but CPR didn’t save her. The plane had to make a medical emergency diversion and land in Turks and Caicos. Smith was pronounced dead at the hospital there. Her body is still in Turks and Caicos‚ where her family is still waiting for an autopsy. It’s been more than a week. “We want answers‚ we want her body back‚ we just want her home‚” said Smith’s brother‚ Chris Volz. Stefanie Smith was on a flight headed for Charlotte‚ North Carolina‚ when she suffered a medical emergency and died. https://t.co/oABWuvQvas — WFMY News 2 (@WFMY) March 11‚ 2024 “I’d say the uncertainty‚ the not knowing how she died‚ the not knowing when her body will be returned to us‚ has been the hardest thing recently‚” said Volz‚ according to People. “It’s been a week so we’re past the initial shock. But now‚ it’s the uncertainty‚” he added. From People: He also shared that Smith’s “celebration of life” has a tentative date; however‚ her body has not been released from the Turks and Caicos Hospital. He said the family is unsure when they will receive her body and confirmed they have not heard from American Airlines but are “hoping to find out soon.” Volz also spoke of his sister’s healthy lifestyle‚ explaining that she “coached cheerleading and softball‚ when her kids were younger.” Smith was a mother of two children: an 18-year-old son and a 16-year-old daughter. “She was very active‚” said Volz. “Right before she left‚ she took a picture with everyone and there was no indication that she was sick.” He also previously told ABC News‚ “She was a special person…Her kids really…love her a lot‚ and I know she loved them‚” Volz said. “And so it’s tough.” Along with Volz‚ Smith’s friend Maria Yannotti — who joined her on the vacation — also spoke with ABC News. Yannotti shared how Smith appeared healthy before the flight. “She loves going to the gym every day‚ even while we were in the Dominican. She made it a point to get up every morning to go to the gym and run on the beach‚” Yannotti said. WATCH:
