Apple seeds iPadOS 18 beta 2 ahead of Apple Intelligence release

With iPadOS 18 beta 2 now available, developers can try the features coming to iPad users later this fall. While we expected many exclusive functions for the M4 iPad Pro, it seems Apple wants to expand changes to more iPad users as possible. At the moment, it's unclear what's changed with iPadOS 18 beta 2. Still, we hope Apple continues to improve usability and fix bugs. iPadOS 18 is bringing several new features, including a brand-new Calculator app. It looks similar to what you’d expect from Apple’s Calculator app. However, it brings an all-new Math Notes feature, allowing users to type or write out mathematical expressions and see them instantly solved in their handwriting. With Apple Pencil’s help, Smart Script makes handwritten notes fluid and easier to read. Smart Script allows users to write quickly without sacrificing legibility by smoothing and straightening handwritten text in real-time. It also makes editing handwritten text just as simple as editing typed text. With Apple Pencil, users can easily add space, scratch out a sentence, or even paste typed text in their own handwriting, and the paragraph will automatically reflow to fit the new content. Besides these changes, iPadOS 18 beta also takes customization to a new level. Now, apps can be organized in any way, which means they can be placed anywhere. App icons and widgets can take on a new look with a dark or tinted effect, and users can make apps appear larger to create the perfect experience. In addition, Apple has released new features that let users lock and hide apps. When an app is locked or hidden, content like messages or emails inside the app is hidden from search, notifications, and other places across the system. Users can only unlock it with Face ID and Touch ID. BGR teaches you how to hide and lock iPad apps in iPadOS 18. Alongside iPadOS 18 beta 2, Apple has also seeded the second testing versions of iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2. watchOS 11 beta 2 now available with revamped Activity Rings and more

watchOS 11 reaches beta 2 as Apple keeps working on the next software update for Apple Watch users. While this version isn't as packed as watchOS 10 was, it still brings important features. With watchOS 11 beta 2, Apple finally lets users customize their Activity Rings. Thanks to this change, the Activity Rings will understand planned rest days, injuries, or days off without affecting the award streak. It’s also possible to customize Activity Ring goals by the day of the week, so your leg workout might differ from the one you go for an outdoor run. Additionally, the Fitness app allows users to customize the Summary tab to show exactly the metrics they want to see, including their friends’. watchOS 11 beta 2 is also responsible for introducing a new Vitals app, as Apple focuses on health and well-being features. This app gives users a way to quickly view these key health metrics and gain better context when it comes to their health. This Apple Watch app (alongside insights from the Fitness app for iPhone users) helps you understand if you’re on a typical range or if you’re overreaching or missing too many workouts. When two or more metrics are out of their typical range, users can receive a notification and a message detailing how changes in these specific metrics may be linked to other aspects of their lives, such as elevation changes, alcohol consumption, or even illness. With Training Load, it measures how the intensity and duration of workouts impact a user’s body over time. Training load helps users understand the strain on their body from workouts over the last seven days compared to the last 28 days. Apple says these insights can help you prepare for an event, such as a marathon, bike race, or your first 5K, or just make informed decisions about your training each day. Alongside watchOS 11 beta 2, Apple is also releasing the second testing versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, tvOS 18, and visionOS 2. Apple releases tvOS 18 beta 2 with these 6 features

Following the first beta of tvOS 18, Apple has now released its second testing version to Apple TV users. At the moment, it's unclear what's changing from one build to the other. However, we still expect the company to add the new TV and Movies screensavers announced during the WWDC 2024 keynote. Starting with the Apple TV app, Apple is adding three new features that will make everyday usage way better when enjoying Apple TV+ content: InSight: An Amazon Prime Video-like feature that displays timely information about actors, characters, and music from Apple TV+ movies and shows onscreen in real-time. Users can select an actor to view their background and filmography page or quickly view the song that is playing in a scene and add it to an Apple Music playlist. Enhance Dialogue: This feature is getting smarter, leveraging machine learning and computation audio to deliver greater vocal clarity over music, action, and background noise on Apple TV 4K. In addition to HomePod speakers, users can now enjoy Enhance Dialogue when listening through built-in TV or HDMI-connected speakers, AirPods, and other Bluetooth-connected devices, and when playing supported content on iPhone and iPad; Automatic subtitles: Subtitles now automatically appear at just the right moments with tvOS 18, including when the language in a show or film does not match the device language when users mute, or when they skip back while watching something. For those who prefer connecting an Apple TV 4K to a projector, tvOS 18 beta 2 brings one of its best features yet: 21:9 support for playing movies and shows. tvOS 18 also adds: Apple Fitness+: A redesigned interface helps users make the most of the library and explore the exercises they like the most; FaceTime with Continuity Camera: Apple adds Live Captions for English in the US and Canada, so users can read what others are saying on a FaceTime call from the TV tvOS 18 has even more features in store. Alongside its beta 2, Apple also seeded the second-testing versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2. While this update doesn't bring many new features, it addresses several lacking functions users were waiting for in Apple Vision Pro. That said, this is what you should expect from visionOS 2 beta 2 at this moment: Spatial photos: With visionOS 2 beta, users can revisit past memories by creating spatial photos directly from their library in the Photos app.  Mac Virtual Display: It will feature a higher resolution and larger size, creating an ultra-wide display equivalent to two 4K monitors side by side.  Home View:  Users can now personalize their Home View by rearranging apps and placing them wherever they want, including their compatible iPhone and iPad apps New hand gestures: visionOS 2 beta makes navigating Apple Vision Pro faster and easier for users to access key functions with new hand gestures to get to frequently used features like Home View and Control Center. New gestures allow users to see important information at a glance, like the current time and battery level, and perform actions like adjusting the volume. Travel Mode for Trains: Travelers can experience their favorite apps on the go, even on trains Guest user: For those moments when a user wants to share their Vision Pro, a family member or colleague can be added as a Guest User and have their eye and hand data saved for 30 days. The Apple TV app brings support for multiview to Apple Vision Pro for the ultimate sports-viewing experience. Later this year, fans can watch up to five simultaneous streams to keep track of all their favorite sports and teams. macOS Sequoia beta 2 now available with iPhone Mirroring and other 9 features

macOS Sequoia is the upcoming software update for Mac users. With beta 2, Apple continues its testing to release an official version of this system later this fall. These are some of the features users can expect to have once the final build is available. For Safari, macOS Sequoia beta 2 brings the long-awaited iPhone Mirroring feature, which was unavailable with the first beta. This Continuity function allows users to fully access and engage with their iPhone right from their Mac. Apple says that a user’s custom wallpaper and icons appear just like on their iPhone, and they can swipe between pages on their Home Screen or launch and browse any of their favorite apps. The keyboard, trackpad, and mouse on Mac also let users interact with their iPhone, and audio even comes through. In addition, macOS Sequoia beta 2 brings the following: Highlights: That’s an easier way to discover information on the web, such as directions, summaries, or quick links to learn more about people, music, movies, and TV shows; Reader: A redesigned Reader includes even more ways to enjoy articles without distractions, featuring a streamlined view of the article a user is reading, a summary, and a table of contents for longer articles; Video detection: When Safari detects a video on the page, Viewer helps users put it front and center while still giving them full access to system playback controls, including Picture in Picture. With a new Passwords app, Apple wants to make it easy for users to access their passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes. In addition, iPhone Mirroring and Apple Intelligence functions will be available at a later date. With macOS Sequoia beta 2, Apple is also adding the following functions: Messages have received major updates to improve users’ expression and stay connected. These include all-new text effects, emoji and sticker Tapbacks, and the ability to schedule messages to be sent later. Apple Maps introduces even more ways to explore the world, including curated hikes and custom walking routes. Beginning this fall, users can browse thousands of hikes across all 63 national parks in the United States, filtered by length, elevation, and route type, and save them to use while offline. Photos now surface Collections, which automatically organizes a user’s library by helpful themes. The search feature has also been updated so users can get results quickly. Note-taking in Notes is getting smarter, making it easier than ever to take detailed and well-written notes. New audio transcription and summarization features with Apple Intelligence enable a device to take notes for the user, letting them stay present in a situation where they need to capture details about what’s happening. And if they need to quickly crunch a number, they can just type in an equation to have it solved automatically in their note body. Calendar shows events and tasks from Reminders, making it easy to see, edit, or complete tasks throughout the day. An updated Month View makes it easier to see events and reminders for an entire month at a glance. Alongside macOS Sequoia beta 2, Apple is also releasing the second testing versions of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2. The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand: 110 Years Ago

June 28 this week marks the 110th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The assassination was one of history's greatest turning points, putting into play the diplomatic crisis that led to the First World War. However, it happened by accident, as a result of a whole series of mistakes and missed opportunities.Alan Bardos, author of a related novel (Amazon US | Amazon UK) explains. A depiction of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Sarajevo. From Domenica del Corriere, by Achille Beltrame. Oskar PotiorekBosnia and Herzegovina was a hotly disputed territory in 1914. It had been annexed by the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1910 from the crumbling Ottoman Empire, but was also claimed by neighboring Serbia and had a growing nationalist movement amongst its youth who wanted it to be part of a South Slav state. The decision to send the crown prince of Austro-Hungary into such an unstable region, to attend army maneuvers, was largely made in an attempt to strengthen the monarchy’s rule; charming the local population and demonstrating its military might. The security for Franz Ferdinand’s visit fell to the military governor of Bosnia and Herzegovina, General Oskar Potiorek. Potiorek wanted to become the Chief of the General Staff and saw the visit as an opportunity to stake his claim. Franz Ferdinand was a fastidious man, prone to fits of rage and was known as ‘The Ogre’ in court circles. A single error could have finished the governor’s career. The Archduke had already blocked Potiorek’s promotion, twice.Potiorek paid close attention to every aspect of the Archduke’s needs during the visit. He had an extraordinary eye for detail. He over saw all arrangements, from ensuring that the Archduke’s wine would be served at the correct temperature, to building him a private chapel.Nothing was left to chance, that is except the security of Franz Ferdinand’s visit to Sarajevo. Austro-Hungarian intelligence was aware of plots against Archduke Ferdinand and the danger posed by Serbia who were attempting to resist Austro-Hungarian expansion in the region. There was however no definite evidence of a plot against Archduke Franz Ferdinand, threats of this kind were not unusual in the increasingly volatile Austro-Hungarian monarchy. A schoolboy conspiracy Unlike other areas of the Monarchy there had not been any violence attributed to nationalism in Bosnia. Potiorek did not recognize the growing nationalism among the youth that had inspired a Young Bosnia Movement and the assassins. This reflects the Austro-Hungarian Government’s attitude to the threat placed by the nationalist movements in their Balkan provinces. No attempt was made to counter them because the security services did not believe they existed. The idea that half-starved schoolboys could be any kind of a threat was too ridiculous to contemplate. There were officials in Sarajevo who did understand the growing danger from these “schoolboys” and that they were working with Serbia. The police commissioner for Sarajevo, Dr Edmund Gerde, advised Potirok that there was a conspiracy, two weeks before Franz Ferdinand’s visit. Dr Sunaric the vice president of the Bosnian Parliament urged Potiorek to cancel the archducal visit because of possible Young Bosnia activity. Potiorek dismissed these warnings.Archduke Ferdinand himself was warned about the possibility of an assassination attempt, but travelled to Bosnia nonetheless, albeit reluctantly. Franz Ferdinand’s wife Sophie insisted on accompanying her husband when she heard of the threats, as she did not believe anyone would shoot at him if a woman was by his side. The night before the Royal couple were due to visit Sarajevo, Sophie met Doctor Sunaric at a state dinner and told him that he was wrong. Wherever they had been, ‘everyone had greeted them with great friendliness’. Doctor Sunaric responded ‘Your Highness, I pray to God that when I have the honor of meeting you again tomorrow night, you can repeat those words to me.’One of the most tragic aspects of the whole affair is that Archduke Franz Ferdinand decided to cancel the visit to Sarajevo following the state dinner, possibly having been warned by the local police, but he was persuaded to complete the planned itinerary by Colonel von Merizzi, Governor Potiorek’s aide-de-camp. Sarajevo, Sunday morning, June 28, 1914Potiorek left the protection of Franz Ferdinand largely to the officers of the Archduke’s entourage. There were only 120 gendarmes lining the streets, to provide security in a city of over 50,000 people. Bringing in additional policemen was deemed to be too expensive, as all of the budget had gone on building the chapel for Franz Ferdinand. Potiorek also refused to use the troops from the maneuvers as extra security. He felt a strong military presence would offend the local inhabitants and the soldiers did not have their dress uniforms.Consequently one of the conspirators in the assassination plot, Nedeljko Cabrinovic, was able to throw a bomb at the Archduke’s car as it drove to the official reception. The bomb missed, but when the motorcade reached the reception Potiorek took full responsibility and assured Franz Ferdinand that the danger had passed.Potiorek spurred the suggestion that troops be used to clear the streets stating, ‘do you think that Sarajevo is full of assassins?’ Potiorek did suggest cutting the Archduke’s itinerary short and proceeding to his residence for lunch. To avoid any further danger in the narrow backstreets that the Archduke was scheduled to drive through. The Archduke however wanted to visit the wounded from the earlier bombing. In the ensuing confusion the change of route was not communicated to the driver of the first car in the Archduke’s motorcade. When the motorcade left the reception the lead driver stuck to the original route and turned into a backstreet. As the Archduke’s car began to follow, Potiorek realized the mistake and ordered the driver to stop. In front of 19 year old Gavrilo Princip, who fired twice with a Browning model semi-automatic pistol, killing the Archduke and Sophie, and sparking the First World War.The fact that Potiorek was in the car and that Princip claimed to be shooting at him when he shot Franz Ferdinand’s wife, has meant that Potiorek was never held to account for his actions. The blame was placed on Serbia. The assassins were aided by elements in Serbian intelligence, but if Potiorek had followed the advice of his police chief; or acted decisively following the first assassination attempt, Gavrilo Princip and the ensuing war could have been stopped.            The events depicted in this article inspired Alan Bardos’ novel ‘The Assassins’, which can be purchased here: Amazon US | Amazon UK Sources'One Morning in Sarajevo', David James Smith'The Archduke and the Assassin', Lavender Cassels'The Road To Sarajevo', Vadmire Dedijer'The Desperate Act', Roberta Strauss Feuerlicht.'Archduke of Sarajevo: The Romance & Tragedy of Franz Ferdinand of Austria', Gordon Brook-Shepherd'The Assassination of the Archduke', Greg King & Sue Woolmans
