Incredible ‘Polar Rain’ Aurora Seen From Earth For The First Time

On Christmas Day 2022, a highly peculiar aurora was seen over an enormous section of the Arctic sky, the likes of which have never previously been observed from the ground. Known as a polar rain aurora, this exceptional light show was produced by a waterfall of electrons that emanated from the sun before cascading peacefully over the North Pole.Typically, auroras consist of dynamic, shifting lights that change shape and color as they dance across the sky. This phenomenon is caused by charged solar particles interacting with the Earth’s magnetic field, before being channeled towards the poles. However, the spectacle observed on the night of December 25 2022 was completely different. For one thing, it was massive, covering an area of around 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles). More interestingly, though, it was completely uniform and unchanging, consisting of a smooth, featureless green glow that just hung in the sky without morphing or rearranging itself into any shapes. To find out what happened, the authors of a new study examined data from the US Defense Department’s polar-orbiting satellites. In doing so, they discovered that the solar wind had dropped to virtually zero at the time of the aurora, which also coincided with the opening of a so-called coronal hole on the sun’s surface. As a consequence, high-energy electrons were able to flow out of this coronal hole without becoming scattered by the solar wind. These particles - which would normally be blown from pillar to post, creating fast-moving aurorae - were therefore able to gently rain down over the North Pole in a steady stream, creating a completely flat aurora.“By combining ground-based and satellite observations, we proved that this unique aurora was produced by suprathermal electrons streaming directly from the Sun, which is known as “polar rain.”,” write the researchers. Until now, this phenomenon had only ever been observed from space, but had never been seen from the ground. The study authors also calculated that the spread of electrons streaming out of the coronal hole would have covered some 7,500 kilometers (4,600 miles) of the sky, which explains why this edition of the Northern Lights was so large.“This incredibly smooth and gigantic form is distinctively different from that of a typical polar cap aurora,” explain the researchers. “Thus, it cannot be categorized as any previously identified class of aurorae visible at polar cap latitudes.”The study has been published in the journal Science Advances.

The Media's Red Faces and Lost Credibility in the Biden Collapse

There’s an awful lot of red media faces out there this week. And the reason why is obvious. As President Joe Biden proceeded along his path to the White House and then through the four years of his term, the mainstream media couldn’t praise him enough for saving democracy from former President Trump. As NewsBusters editor Tim Graham has pointed out, when presented with a genuine, real-live liberal Democrat to challenge Biden - that would be Minnesota’s Democrat Congressman Phillips - the media simply closed their eyes to the Phillips message. That message, as Tim points out, was about “challenging Biden’s mental decline.” And the media looked the other way. The resulting problem for the mainstream media now is stark and simple. If they couldn’t tell the obvious truth about Biden’s mental condition -- why should they be trusted when trying to sell anything else? The political world is filled with serious problems. Unemployment, job creation, inflation, how to handle Putin and Russia, Xi Jing Ping and China, the Iranian Mullahs, North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, the state of NATO and more. Given that to be the case, one would think the media would be exercising a thorough review of its own offerings instead of peddling, day after day, fantasies about Biden opponent Donald Trump - while ignoring, day after day, the realities about Joe Biden’s actual mental condition. Instead the media dished stories like these:   The Atlantic:  Why Trump Won’t Win His threats to democracy make him dangerous. They also make him a weak candidate.   In which Hussein Ibish said:  “Yes, Joe Biden is an imperfect opponent. And yes, much could change over the next 11 months, potentially in Trump’s favor. But if Biden’s health holds, he is very likely to be reelected next year.”  Got that? Not only is there no reference to Biden’s mental health problems, the reference is exactly the opposite: “But if Biden’s health holds…..”. In other words, in The Atlantic, there was no problem with Biden’s health other than it remaining the same. And there was no question that everything was just hunky dory with ole Joe’s cognitive condition. Until now. Ibish wants him gone.  Then there was CNN:  Opinion: Trump is wrong. This is the real terror threat in America In which CNN national security analyst Peter Bergen predictably says terrorists crossing the border is not the real threat - Trump his January 6 gang are the real threat. The riot was the "most unsettling act of domestic terrorism in decades." So, "When it comes to acts of terrorism, it might behoove Trump to take a careful look in the mirror instead of misdirecting attention to the southern border." There was zero mention of Biden’s cognitive problems. Then there was this over at the amusingly titled “Scientific American”: The ‘Shared Psychosis’ of Donald Trump and His Loyalists Read the bold print:  “Yet the (January 6th) rioters’ actions—and Trump’s own role in, and response to, them—come as little surprise to many, particularly those who have been studying the president’s mental fitness and the psychology of his most ardent followers since he took office. One such person is Bandy X. Lee, a forensic psychiatrist and president of the World Mental Health Coalition.* Lee led a group of psychiatrists, psychologists and other specialists who questioned Trump’s mental fitness for office in a book that she edited called The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President." And as to Joe Biden’s “mental fitness for office”? Not a peep from these "scientists." One could go on. And on and on with media stories like these. But the plain and simple fact is that Joe Biden’s cognitive problems were just flatly ignored by the media as he was elected and his presidency unrolled. Not until just the other day, when his debate performance so blatantly revealed to the nation a president who did in fact have serious cognitive problems - did the media red flag go up. Among those raising that flag was The New York Times, which editorialized that Democrats had to “deal truthfully with the American public: acknowledge that Mr. Biden can’t continue his race, and create a process to select someone more capable to stand in his place to defeat Mr. Trump in November.” Catch that line? Democrats have to “deal truthfully with the American public..”. Perhaps, just perhaps, if the media had dealt truthfully from the get go about the state of Joe Biden’s cognitive problems - than Democrats, not to mention the country and the world - would not be in this situation to begin with. But the media chose, at best, to ignore what so many in Biden’s White House circle knew was the hard truth about Biden and his mental health. Now the media’s own credibility is seriously - and justifiably - at issue. On anything and everything. And the fact that they have so seriously damaged that credibility by ignoring the hard facts in a major story?   There is a Biden collapse....and a further collapse of the media who could only repeat what they were told by their minders.

New Study Shows 6th Century Anglo-Saxon Mercenaries Fought in the Middle East

A fresh reexamination of artifacts recovered from ancient Anglo-Saxon burials has revealed some startling information about ancient Britain’s involvement in far-off military adventures in the sixth century AD. It seems there is good evidence to suggest that Anglo-Saxon people who lived in this period may have left Britain and traveled to northern Syria and the eastern Mediterranean region to participate in military conflicts, fighting on the side of the Byzantine Empire.  A pair of English scholars, St. John Simpson, a senior curator at the British Museum, and Helen Gittos, a medieval historian from Oxford University, have concluded that some unique and exotic items retrieved during excavations at several ancient Anglo-Saxon burial sites came directly from northern Syria and the eastern Mediterranean. While the previous belief was that these objects had been acquired by wealthy Anglo-Saxon families with access to long-distance trade networks, Simpson and Gittos argue that this is not the case.  Read moreSection: ArtifactsOther ArtifactsNewsHistory & ArchaeologyRead Later

Grilled Chicken Legs

Grilled Chicken Legs

Juicy, tender Grilled Chicken Legs have the perfect amount of flavor and smokiness. The caramelized bbq sauce takes the flavor over the top! AN AFFORDABLE GRILLED DINNER I love a good Grilled Chicken Leg. This recipe is not only super simple to make, but it is easy on the wallet and that is always a nice thing (especially with the way these meat prices are breaking the bank these days!) These Grilled BBQ Chicken Legs go with just about any side dish too. They’re very versatile and everyone loves them! Plus, you can make extra easily so you can just pull the meat off and use it in salads or wraps later on. Great for meal prepping! FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:  Do Grilled Chicken Legs dry out easily? Since these chicken legs are made of dark meat, they don’t dry out as easily as white meat would. It’s also worth mentioning that I cooked these chicken legs a little longer than what it would take for the internal meat to reach 165°F. I do this because I like the meat a little more, but if you just want to cook them until they reach that internal temperature, use a thermometer and adjust the cooking time as you see fit. Do I have to marinate the chicken? Dry marinating the chicken isn’t absolutely necessary if you don’t have the time for it. But if you do, marinating the chicken definitely makes it more flavorful. You can use your favorite store-bought rub in place of the one provided in the recipe if desired. Can I use chicken breasts or chicken thighs? Yes, you’ll just need to adjust your cooking time until the internal temperature reaches at least 165F degrees. What do I do if the chicken is cooking too fast? Sometimes grilling makes people nervous because they don’t grill often or it feels like the temperature can get out of control super quickly. So I have a little tip I want to share to help if you find your chicken is cooking too fast and you’re afraid it’ll burn. I like to keep one side of the grill the “cool side”- meaning I won’t turn on the gas on that side of the grill. That way, if I see the meat is cooking too fast, I can immediately shift it over to the cool side of the grill so I can get the heat turned down to prevent that meat from burning. If you have a charcoal grill, you can still do this by keeping the briquettes to one side of the grill and this will create a cooler space on the other side if you need it. Is it safe to add the bbq sauce while chicken is still on the grill? This can cause some apprehension for some people when making some Grilled BBQ Chicken Legs because sometimes when you’re adding the sauce, you may see a flare up (this is because of the sugar in BBQ sauce). This usually happens if you have slathered a bit too much bbq sauce on the chicken and some drips off. Don’t worry! If this happens to you, move the meat to the cool side of the grill for a minute to let the excess sauce start to stick to the meat, then you can move it back over the heat on the grill grates. This is a fairly quick process and if you are concerned at all, you can always add the BBQ sauce onto the chicken after it has finished cooking. What’s the best way to store leftover Grilled Chicken Legs? I like to store leftover chicken legs in an airtight container and keep them in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. You could freeze any leftovers in a freezer safe container and they’ll keep for about 3 months in the freezer. How do you reheat Grilled Chicken Legs? To keep your chicken nice and moist so you can reheat them easily without drying them out, I like to make a little foil packet and add a splash of water with the chicken. Then pop the foil pack on a baking sheet and reheat it in the oven until warmed through again. INGREDIENTS NEEDED: (SEE RECIPE CARD BELOW FOR THE FULL RECIPE) light brown sugar – if you don’t like the additional sweetness, you can leave this out. garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, ground mustard – this is my personal favorite seasoning for these. You can use your own favorite seasoning blend or use a store-bought seasoning. chicken legs – I have only made this with raw chicken legs not frozen. You could use frozen but I would recommend allowing them to fully thaw in the refrigerator then patting them dry. bbq sauce – store-bought or homemade BBQ sauce. water – this just thins the BBQ sauce out a bit so it is easier to spread. HOW TO MAKE GRILLED CHICKEN LEGS In a small bowl, add the light brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and ground mustard and stir together well. In a large bowl, add the chicken legs then sprinkle on the spices and stir to coat all the chicken legs in the spices. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours to marinate (note: if you are in a time crunch, you can certainly cook them right away without marinating).   In a separate bowl, stir together the bbq sauce and water until combined. Set aside. Clean and oil the grates on your grill then preheat the grill to medium heat (about 350F degrees). Place the chicken legs on to the grill, close the lid and allow them cook, turning every few minutes until an internal temperature reaches about 130-140°F. Time will vary depending on the size of the chicken legs, but this should take about 15-20 minutes. Note: keep an eye on the temperature of your grill. If it starts getting too hot, open the grill lid and turn down the heat.  Take the BBQ sauce and baste the legs on both sides and continue to cook until an internal temperature reaches at least 165°F about another 10 minutes or until your desired doneness (180-190°F results in fall-off-the-bone meat). I like to rotate the legs every minute or so and baste with the bbq sauce each time so the sauce will caramelize. Once they reach an internal temperature of 165F degrees, they are done. I look to cook mine a little past 165F since I like them super tender and I like the skin to get darker and a bit crispier.  CRAVING MORE RECIPES?  Grilled Italian Lemon Garlic Chicken The Best Grilled Ribs Grilled BBQ Chicken Thighs Grilled Chicken Marinade Grilled Bacon Cheeseburger Grilled Hawaiian BBQ Chicken Grilled Pork Chops Grilled Honey Lime Chicken Skewers Grilled Teriyaki Chicken Skewers Grilled BBQ Pork Potato Packets Hot Dog Burnt Ends Grilled Hot Dog Potato Packets Grilled Peaches Grilled Corn on the Cob Huli Huli Chicken Print Grilled Chicken Legs Juicy, tender Grilled Chicken Legs have the perfect amount of flavor and smokiness.
