It Looks Like Ukraine Will Join NATO. How Will Putin Respond?

Author of How to Prep When You’re Broke and Bloom Where You’re Planted online course Last weekend‚ a video began circulating on X (Twitter) that got little to no coverage in the MSM. (I know‚ you’re shocked.) In the clip‚ Jens Stoltenberg‚ the Secretary General of NATO‚ said something that could drive us rapidly off the cliff into WW3. He said‚ “Ukraine will join NATO.” Watch it here: JUST IN: Ukraine will join NATO‚ Chief says. pic.twitter.com/6zVyjrTOEu — BRICS (@BRICSinfo) February 24‚ 2024 This is quite a poke in the eye of Russian President Vladimir Putin. President Putin has repeatedly warned against Ukraine being allowed to join the alliance. He said it back in February of 2022‚ when the war began. “[T]here will be no winners‚” he said‚ describing a hypothetical future in which Ukraine had joined NATO and then attempted to invade Russian-occupied Crimea‚ “and you will find yourself drawn into this conflict against your will. You will be fulfilling Article 5 in a heartbeat‚ even before you know it.” “Do you realize that if Ukraine joins NATO and decides to take Crimea back through military means‚ the European countries will automatically get drawn into a military conflict with Russia?” Putin said. “Of course‚ NATO’s united potential and that of Russia are incomparable.” Though the Kremlin’s English-language transcript has Putin using‚ somewhat ambiguously‚ the term “incomparable‚” he also asserted that Russia “is one of the world’s leading nuclear powers and is superior to many of those countries in terms of the number of modern nuclear force components.” Here’s some video footage of this press conference‚ with subtitles. Article 5 of NATO’s founding treaty basically says that an attack on one NATO country is an attack on all NATO countries and is a pact of collective defense. The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that‚ if such an armed attack occurs‚ each of them‚ in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations‚ will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith‚ individually and in concert with the other Parties‚ such action as it deems necessary‚ including the use of armed force‚ to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area. Russia again warned that Ukraine joining NATO would not be well-received in October of 2022. “Kyiv is well aware that such a step would mean a guaranteed escalation to World War Three‚” TASS quoted Alexander Venediktov‚ the deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council‚ as saying. The Russians have been quite clear. If this alliance is made‚ they will retaliate. What is Russia’s protocol for using nuclear weapons? Leaked Russian military documents have exposed that Russia’s threshold for a nuclear attack is lower than we’d previously been told. According to documents that have been seen and verified by the Financial Times: Criteria for a potential nuclear response range from an enemy incursion on Russian territory to more specific triggers‚ such as the destruction of 20 percent of Russia’s strategic ballistic missile submarines… …Russia’s tactical nuclear weapons‚ which can be delivered by land or sea-launched missiles or from aircraft‚ are designed for limited battlefield use in Europe and Asia‚ as opposed to the larger “strategic” weapons intended to target the US. Modern tactical warheads can still release significantly more energy than the weapons dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima in 1945… …The exercises offer a rare insight into how Russia views its nuclear arsenal as a cornerstone of its defence policy — and how it trains forces to be able to carry out a nuclear first strike in some battlefield conditions. In summary‚ Russia’s policy is to make the first strike and there are guidelines in place for how and when they would do this. The article is well worth a read. Is NATO already involved in the fighting? According to a Hungarian newspaper‚ Magyar Nemzet‚ the Russians believe that NATO military personnel are already involved in the conflict in Ukraine‚ disguising themselves as mercenaries. In an interview with the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper‚ Major General Sergei Rudskoi‚ the Chief Operations Director of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff‚ spoke about the fact that NATO military personnel take part in the battles in Ukraine disguised as mercenaries‚ reports the English-language Pravda news portal. NATO soldiers take part in hostilities disguised as mercenaries. They control operational and tactical missile air defense systems and multiple missile launch systems and are part of assault squads‚ Rudskoi stated. According to him‚ NATO officers directly shape the military operations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During the cleaning of Avgyijivka‚ quite a few interesting details were revealed. In this case‚ we are dealing with corpses abandoned by Ukrainian armed forces‚ whose uniforms were sewn with American and Polish markings‚ Igor Kimakovskyi‚ adviser to the leader of the “Donetsk People’s Republic”‚ told TASSSZ. Now‚ it’s very important to note that Pravda (which ironically means “truth” in Russian) has been accused of being a state-sponsored mouthpiece and a propaganda outlet for the Kremlin. They wouldn’t be the first government that drummed up another “reason” for people to fear and hate “the enemy.” (Looking at you‚ America.) So‚ it’s possible that the information printed there is inaccurate. Magyar Nemzet is a conservative-leaning Hungarian newspaper.  When deciding whether you believe this report is accurate‚ take these two things into account. If Ukraine will join NATO‚ what happens next? If Ukraine joins NATO‚ Putin has already made it very clear that he won’t be pleased. And by “not pleased‚” I mean he’s threatening to nuke someone. Or maybe even everyone.  The Russian government has a “first strike” policy in that they intend to be the aggressors in a large-scale war. By allowing Ukraine into NATO‚ member states are inviting a larger global conflict. And in a world that has seemed on the verge of the next huge war‚ that seems akin to throwing a match into a vat of gasoline. This is something to watch very closely. Prepare for the possibility of a nuclear event. (Know that if you are not at Ground Zero‚ this is survivable‚ and no‚ it won’t turn the entire country into a nuclear winter wasteland like in that horrifying book The Road.) Here are some ways to prepare: Read this article. Watch this webinar. Get enough Iosat for your entire family. If you need it‚ you’ll be glad you bought it. If you don’t‚ it’s not a ton of money but it’s a great deal of peace of mind. This one has same-day delivery from Amazon. This is a product that rapidly sells out every time there’s talk of nuclear war‚ and before it sells out‚ the price skyrockets. (Here’s how to use it after a nuclear emergency.) It’s a real shame that we ordinary people get dragged into conflicts with people with whom we have no problems‚ by people who are protected by bunkers and armies. But it’s happened since the world began. Prep for this like you would anything else – calmly and rationally.  We can only do what we can do. All of us are limited by something‚ be it money‚ location‚ space‚ or family members who are not on board. The important thing is to be aware and proactive. What do you think? Do you think Ukraine will join NATO? Will Putin retaliate? If so‚ will it be with nuclear weapons? What do you expect to see happening with regard to this situation? Earth's Atmosphere Is Missing Huge Amounts Of Xenon‚ And We Don't Really Know Where It Went

Earth's Atmosphere Is Missing Huge Amounts Of Xenon‚ And We Don't Really Know Where It Went

Meteorites that have impacted our planet over the years have brought with them a mystery: Earth's atmosphere appears to be missing large amounts of xenon.Meteorites – some of which are older than Earth – give us insights into the early Solar System and our own planet. Rocky planets formed from these smaller bodies clumping together‚ so they should give us clues about the chemical makeup of our own early planet. So it was puzzling to find that in carbonaceous chondrites – old‚ carbon-rich meteorites – scientists found levels of xenon were much higher than we expected in proportion to other gases. Since the rocks tell us about gas proportions in the early Solar System‚ it tells us that the amount of xenon in our current atmosphere is around 10 percent of what we'd expect it to be. This is especially puzzling because of how little xenon reacts with other elements."Xenon is one of a family of seven elements called the noble gases‚ some of which‚ such as helium and neon‚ are household names‚" Elissaios Stavrou‚ lead author on a 2018 paper investigating the missing xenon‚ explained in a statement at the time. "Their name comes from a kind of chemical aloofness; they normally do not combine‚ or react‚ with other elements."                  Fellow noble gases argon and krypton are in our atmosphere‚ and in the proportions we'd expect. So‚ where did the missing xenon go? There have been suggestions that xenon could be hiding in minerals‚ Earth's core‚ or even in glaciers. The 2018 paper's team found that under extreme pressure‚ xenon could form compounds with other elements."Our study provides the first experimental evidence of previously theorized compounds of iron and xenon existing under the conditions found in the Earth's core‚" co-author Alexander Goncharov explained. "However‚ it is unlikely that such compounds could have been made early in Earth's history‚ while the core was still forming‚ and the pressures of the planet's interior were not as great as they are now."It could be that a few processes combined to trap xenon in the mantle before being incorporated into the core‚ but that remains to be seen.Another idea is that the missing xenon left Earth's atmosphere long ago through degassing‚ being carried off into space as meteorites bombarded Earth and sent our primordial atmosphere flying. Since fellow heavy gases argon and krypton did not disappear from our atmosphere‚ if this is correct‚ it would need to be explained why only xenon was swept off into space while Earth's atmosphere was thin. One team‚ including Stavrou‚ did find evidence to support this idea. In their study‚ the team attempted to dissolve xenon and argon in perovskite at temperatures and pressures similar to those found in the Earth's mantle. The idea was that maybe xenon could be hidden in the magnesium silicate perovskite which makes up a lot of the mantle. “I was quite sure that it must be possible to stuff noble gases into perovskite‚” co-author Hans Keppler told Nature. “I suspected xenon may be in there.”However‚ the researchers found that while argon was able to dissolve into the perovskite‚ xenon only dissolved in trace levels. This gave the researchers the idea that a lot of xenon was carried off into space while other noble gases remained on Earth‚ safely hidden away in perovskite.“This is completely different from what everybody else is saying. They are saying the xenon is here but it's hiding somewhere‚" Keppler explained. "We are saying it is not here because very early in Earth’s history it had no place to hide."The team added that the relative abundance of xenon‚ krypton‚ and argon in our atmosphere roughly relates to how soluble those elements are in perovskite. However‚ there are questions about this idea too. If this is the mechanism that saw Earth depleted of its xenon‚ it would have to apply to Mars too. Mars does have small amounts of xenon in its thin atmosphere. However‚ the question remains whether Mars has enough perovskite to trap enough xenon to explain this. If it doesn't‚ we may need to look again for that missing xenon. All “explainer” articles are confirmed by fact checkers to be correct at time of publishing. First-Ever Photos Of Humpback Whale Sex Involve Two Males

First-Ever Photos Of Humpback Whale Sex Involve Two Males

For the first time‚ photographers have recorded two humpback whales copulating. When they showed their footage to a marine mammal expert‚ she confirmed both participants were males‚ confirming once again that same-sex sexual behavior is widespread among animals. There are‚ however‚ questions about whether in this case‚ both whales were happy about the situation.Whales are big‚ but the ocean is bigger‚ so there’s plenty of room to hide if they don’t want humans spying on their private moments. Consequently‚ despite humpbacks being one of the most studied species of whales‚ there is no record of how they copulate – until now.PhD student Stephanie Stack of the Pacific Whale Foundation was contacted by two photographers who‚ while on a recreational trip off Maui‚ had photographed two humpbacks. Lyle Krannichfeld and Brandi Romano contacted Stack because they knew they had something unusual‚ but they didn’t realize just how special their discovery was. Not only was it a first‚ but what they had seen was same-sex coupling. The whales were observed off the coast of Maui‚ Hawaii.Image Credit: Lyle Krannichfeld and Brandi Romano"Despite being well studied for decades‚ the sexual behavior of humpback whales has remained mostly a mystery until now‚” Stack said in a statement sent to IFLScience. “This discovery challenges our preconceived notions about humpback whale behavior. While we have long recognized the complex social structures of these incredible creatures‚ witnessing the copulation of two male whales for the first time is a unique and remarkable event.”Stack and other researchers are keen to expand the pool of observations of humping humpbacks‚ including seeing how common same-sex encounters are as a proportion of copulation in general. Was it sheer fluke that the first recording of humpback sex is two males‚ or are such encounters as common – or even more so – as between males and females? Evidence for the latter includes a forty-year-old account of a subadult male rubbing its penis against the genital slit of an adult male. In that case‚ if copulation occurred‚ it was out of human sight.Humpbacks feed in polar waters during the relevant hemisphere’s summer‚ then migrate to spend winter in the tropics where they give birth and raise their young. If‚ as is expected‚ most sex also occurs in warmer waters‚ it should improve our chances of catching whales in the act. So far‚ however‚ even reports of penis extrusion‚ when cetaceans sacrifice hydrodynamics for mating preparation‚ are rare for humpbacks.Intriguingly‚ the few cases of penis extrusion witnessed include five reports of humpbacks pointing their penises at other males. However‚ four of these involved males competing for access to a fertile female‚ so we may have seen a literal dick-waving contest where one whale was trying to assert priority.“In male cetaceans‚ homosexual activity can involve insertion of the penis of one male into the genital slit‚” Stack and co-authors note in their report of the event. Previous observations have involved smaller and more common species‚ such as the famously horny bottlenose dolphins. While some people might suggest that male whales get it on because it feels good‚ biologists seek evolutionary explanations. “The purpose for nonreproductive behavior is varied; proposed functions include learning or practicing reproductive behaviors‚ establishing or reinforcing dominance relationships‚ forming social alliances‚ and/or reduction in social tension‚” the report states. If the reason we haven’t witnessed humpback copulation before is that they avoid the presence of humans as it happens‚ this pair was an exception. They approached the photographers’ boat and even circled it several times while the copulation was taking place.Sadly‚ however‚ this may not be because they were exhibitionists‚ but an outcome of the possibility the interaction was non-consensual. One whale‚ referred to as A‚ was unhealthily thin and infested with parasites‚ likely as a result of a shipstrike to his jaw.Humpback A has formed an S shape‚ suspected of being associated with stress or avoiding danger.Image credit: Lyle Krannichfeld and Brandi RomanoImages of the tail flukes of both whales have been uploaded to the Happywhale.com database‚ which allowed researchers to identify both whales. Whale B has been in the database since 1993‚ suggesting age does not impede humpback sexual activity. Images of their genitals were also added to the database‚ online whale privacy not being considered a thing as yet.Accounts of same-sex sexual activity‚ and other behaviors then considered "deviant"‚ were once suppressed by scientists worried about the implications the public would draw. Now‚ however‚ they have been documented in so many species that some researchers have proposed the norm may be what we would perceive as bisexuality. The report is published open access in the journal Marine Mammal Science
