Where Is Alexander the Great Buried&;#63;

Where Is Alexander the Great Buried&;#63;

  Alexander the Great‚ one of the most famous historical figures‚ was initially buried in Memphis‚ one of the capitals of ancient Egypt‚ by his loyal general and companion‚ Ptolemy I Soter. Later‚ his body was transferred to Alexandria‚ where it was reburied in a grand mausoleum. Alexander’s final resting place became a revered pilgrimage site‚ attracting Roman emperors. However‚ like most of the ancient metropolis‚ Alexander’s tomb’s location is now lost‚ submerged beneath the sea‚ buried under modern-day Alexandria‚ or hidden in the countryside. Despite extensive searches‚ the exact location of his tomb remains an enduring mystery‚ captivating archaeologists and historians alike.   Alexander the Great Was Buried in Egypt “The Alexander Mosaic” depicting the Battle of Issus‚ discovered in Pompeii‚ now in Naples Archaeological Museum   By the age of 32‚ Alexander the Great had conquered a large portion of the known world‚ toppling down Achaemenid Persia and creating an empire that stretched from Greece and Egypt all the way to India. Alexander would probably expand his Empire further if not for his sudden death in Babylon in 323 BC. Following his demise‚ Alexander’s generals and successors – diadochi – carved the vast Empire‚ fighting for control over Alexander the Great’s legacy. In a daring move‚ Ptolemy‚ one of Alexander’s generals and companions‚ intercepted the funeral procession carrying the conqueror’s body back to Greece.   Ptolemy brought the body to Egypt‚ to the ancient capital of Memphis. The audacious act served a dual purpose: legitimizing the newly founded Ptolemaic dynasty and associating it with the legendary conqueror-turned-pharaoh.   His Final Resting Place Was Alexandria The Canopic Way‚ the main street of ancient Alexandria‚ running through the Greek district‚ by Jean Golvin   Shortly before his death‚ Alexander the Great expressed his wish to be buried in the Siwa Oasis‚ in the temple of Zeus Ammon. His wish was not honored‚ but Ptolemy managed to bury Alexander’s body in ancient Memphis. Ptolemy’s successors‚ however‚ had more ambitious plans. In the late 4th or early 3rd century‚ they transferred Alexander the Great’s body to Alexandria‚ where it was reburied in a new‚ magnificent tomb.   The exact location of Alexander’s mausoleum within Alexandria remains a mystery. Ancient sources refer to a place known as the Soma (from the Greek σῶμα‚ which means “body”) or Sema (from the Greek σῆμα meaning “grave sign or marker”)‚ which housed Alexander’s sarcophagus. The tomb soon became a site of veneration and pilgrimage‚ increasing the importance of Alexandria as the capital of the Hellenistic world.    Alexander’s Tomb Became a Pilgrimage Site Augustus at the Tomb of Alexander the Great‚ by Lionel Noel Royer‚ 1878‚ private collection   By 274 BC‚ Alexander the Great was buried in Alexandria‚ his tomb becoming the focal point for the Ptolemaic cult dedicated to him. Many famous figures visited the final resting place of the legendary conqueror. Julius Caesar paid his respects when he arrived in Alexandria following Pompey the Great’s death. The first Roman emperor – Augustus – also visited Alexander’s mausoleum following his victory of Actium‚ which made him the sole master of the Roman world‚ and made Egypt a Roman province‚ and emperor’s personal possession.    These visits were not merely acts of respect but powerful political statements as the emperors sought to draw parallels with their idol‚ Alexander the Great. Emperor Caligula is said to have taken the conqueror’s breastplate‚ while Caracalla reportedly placed his own tunic‚ ring‚ belt‚ and some other precious items on the coffin symbolizing a transfer of martial virtue from the ancient conqueror to himself.    Alexander the Great’s Tomb is Now Lost Alexandria underwater‚ outline of a sphinx‚ with the statue of a Priest carrying an Osiris-jar   By the late fourth century‚ Alexander the Great’s tomb lost its importance. When emperor Theodosius I banned pagan practices and ordered closure of all temples‚ Alexander’s tomb was opened and looted. If the mausoleum lay within the royal quarter of Alexandria‚ it might have suffered damage during the devastating tsunami that struck the city in 365 AD. However‚ even after the Arabs took control of Alexandria following the Battle of Yarmuk‚ the historians and visitors to the city reported having seen the conqueror’s tomb. The last mention dates back to the 16th century‚ when the once-proud metropolis had been reduced to a coastal village.   Speculations abound. Could Venetian merchants have unwittingly stolen Alexander’s remains‚ mistaking them for those of St. Mark&;#63; Some propose that the conqueror’s tomb lies submerged beneath the waves or hidden beneath the modern streets of Alexandria.   Marble portrait head of Alexander the Great‚ c.300-150 BCE. Source: The British Museum   Despite numerous archaeological excavations‚ the precise spot of Alexander’s final resting place in Alexandria still eludes us. And it would probably remain so‚ continuing to captivate the imagination of scholars and enthusiasts alike – a symbol of the elusive nature of history‚ and our ongoing pursuit to uncover the secrets of the past.

A Prayer for Unshakable Faith – Your Daily Prayer – April 28

&;quot;And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling‚ and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom‚ but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power‚ so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of me‚ but in the power of God.&;quot; – 1 Corinthians 2:3-5 Would you say your faith is unshakable&;#63; Let me rephrase that. When life gets a little unsteady‚ feels upside down‚ and shakes you up a bit...where do you stand&;#63; Is it on the firm foundation of your faith‚ or does life take you on detours that lead you to those bumpy roads that trip you up&;#63; It's okay to admit your faith is a little unsteady‚ maybe even wavering right now. If I am being honest‚ mine is too. The truth is‚ I want to have this incredible connection to the Father‚ where I completely trust and obey Him with every aspect of my life‚ all while illuminating light that radiates my love for Jesus&;#33;  But just this morning‚ I took my coffee‚ sat in my car all alone‚ and let the lies of this world fall on my already heavy shoulders. Instead of leaning into God‚ I succumbed to the ways of my flesh and allowed bitterness to fester. Ugh. My unshakable faith shattered&;#33; But‚ then God showed up as I opened the console (looking for a phone charger)‚ and I was met with two copies of the Bible. I keep them in there because over the past couple of years‚ we have had our car broken into a few times‚ and I figured if anyone is going to steal something (besides my phone charger)‚ it might as well be a copy of God's Word. Now‚ to be completely honest‚ at that moment‚ I was ready to sort of numb out and do the mindless phone scroll. Yet as I plugged in my phone‚ those Bibles kept staring back at me‚ and I got this sense that God was softly calling me to &;quot;recharge&;quot; my faith‚ too. It's just like God to do that‚ right&;#63; Well‚ maybe this is your divine sign‚ and God is tenderly calling for you to &;quot;recharge&;quot; your faith. If so‚ then snag your Bible‚ (heading out to your car with a cup of coffee is optional)‚ and flip to 1 Corinthians 2:3-5.  Paul wrote the letter of First Corinthians to the church at Corinth. Paul is probably the most influential character in the New Testament (besides Jesus of course) and is also quite arguably the greatest missionary to have ever lived&;#33; When we think of Paul‚ we often picture this bold man of stature who exuded such confidence and remained diligent and strong as he traveled all over the Mediterranean. Even though he faced brutality‚ calamity‚ and adversity‚ he continued to preach‚ striving to win the hearts of Jews and Gentiles alike. Paul was the epitome of unshakable faith in the early church‚ right&;#63; ... Some of the people in Corinth didn't really think so. In fact‚ some didn't think he was that impressive&;#33; Paul humbly shared with them that the first time he came to preach to them he was nervous‚ filled with anxiety and fear&;#33; Paul got personal and showed humility‚ explaining how he had moments when his faith wavered‚ bending to the ways of his flesh. However‚ he goes on to say that it isn't about grand performances or perfect execution of delivery because God will fill in our weaknesses. Friend‚ did you catch that&;#63; Unshakable faith isn't about having the &;quot;perfect&;quot; faith that never rattles us‚ but rather it comes with moments that may shake us‚ sometimes to the core of our being‚ and cause us to come before God in our weakness. It's in those moments we must humble ourselves and seek a recharge of our faith by our good and &;quot;perfect&;quot; Savior‚ Jesus&;#33; Let's pray: O God‚ we come before You in need of Your divine mercy and grace. We admit that we need You. We can so easily bend and sway to the lies of this world‚ going down paths that trip us up with anxiety‚ fear‚ worry‚ and so much more. Yet‚ we know when we are weak‚ falling‚ and failing along the way‚ You are faithful and strong. So‚ we seek Your strength today. We surrender our hearts to You and ask that You intervene in our lives‚ reigniting our faith once again. We humbly ask this in Your holy and precious name‚ Jesus‚ amen. Biden Complains About ‘Disinformation’ — While Spreading Disinformation At WHCD

President Joe Biden used his bully pulpit at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner to warn journalists about the risks and dangers posed by “disinformation” — and spread a little disinformation of his own in the process. During his brief remarks at Sunday evening’s dinner‚ Biden framed the 2024 presidential race as a choice that would determine whether democracy was “still the sacred cause of America‚” suggesting that the answer to that question was no unless the people reelected him. Biden went on to say that unless the people had the right information‚ they couldn’t make the right decision — and he called on journalists to “rise up to the seriousness” of the situation. WATCH: Biden again calls on journalists to defend democracy (i.e. crush Republicans): &;quot;Move past the horse race numbers and the gotcha moments‚ and the distractions‚ the sideshows that have come to dominate and sensationalize our politics and focusing on what's actually at stake. I… pic.twitter.com/bdGSSCTgUr — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) April 28‚ 2024 “On the third anniversary of January 6‚ I went to Valley Forge and I said the most urgent question of our time is whether democracy is still — is still the sacred cause of America. That is the question the American people must answer this year and you‚ the free press‚ play a critical role in making sure the American people have the information they need to make an informed decision‚” Biden began. Biden then turned to attack former President Donald Trump‚ delivering a series of partial truths and out-of-context quotes. “The defeated former President has made no secret of his attack on our democracy he said he wants to be a dictator on day one and so much more. He tells supporters he is the revenge and retribution. When in God’s name ever heard of another president say something like that&;#63; And he promised a bloodbath when he loses again‚” Biden said. He then pivoted back to the press‚ claiming that he was not asking them to “take sides” while pressing them to push back against Trump: “We have to take this seriously. Eight years ago‚ it could have been written off as just Trump talk but no longer‚ not after January 6. I’m sincerely not asking you to take sides‚ but asking a rise up to the seriousness of the moment.” “Move past the horse race numbers and the gotcha moments‚ and the distractions‚ the sideshows that have come to dominate and sensationalize our politics and focusing on what’s actually at stake‚” the president continued. “I think in your hearts‚ you know what’s at stake. The stakes couldn’t be higher every single one of us has roles to play — a serious role‚ to play in making sure democracy endures‚ American democracy. I have my role‚ but with all due respect‚ so do you. In the age of disinformation‚ credible information that people can trust is more important than ever and that makes you‚ and I mean this with the bottom of my heart‚ makes you more important than ever. So tonight‚ I’d like to make a toast — to a free press‚ to an informed citizenry‚ to an American where freedom and democracy endure. God bless America.”
